[Q] How to flash the ROM? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi is there somewhere a guide how to flash the ROMs and any list of available ROMs?
Can you advice, recommend some particular ROM?

Hi first of all you have created 2 new threads when you could of created one and asked both questions.
Im assuming that you are rooted looking at your other thread. You need to make sure you have clockworkmod recovery installed, if you haven't the easiest way to do get it is to download ROM manager from the market. Load the app and at the top it will say flash clockworkmod recovery. click on this and this will install CWM recovery for you.
ROM manager is a great tool that les you down load and install ROM's from within the app.
The ROM's available in ROM manager are as follows I'm not going to go in to to much detail, I recommend you have a good read through the dev section about the different ROM's that are available.
CyanogenMod: Is the one of the most popular ROM's available, it is pretty much stock with a few awesome tweaks.
Virtuous: A custom Sense based ROM
MIUI: a really unique ROM that looks more like the iPhone UI, some people love it offers a lot of eye candy and some cool built in features.
There are lots of other ROM's available in the DEV section.
You can download the above ROM's directly from ROM manager and install them really easily just by following the pop ups. Or you can download ROM's from the the DEV forum and place on to your sdcard. Here is a step by step guide.
1, Download your chosen ROM to your sdcard.
2, Reboot in to recovery, select this option from within ROM manager.
3, You will now be in CWM recovery, select back up and restore then backup, this is really important and you should do this before flashing anything. it will enable you to restore you phone to a previous problem free state if you ever mess anything up.
4, Select wipe data, you should do this whenever flashing different types of rom, for example if you are running MIUI and want to switch to virtuous you need to wipe data.
5, Wipe cache, all ways do this regardless of what you are flashing.
6, Head to advance, and wipe dalvik cache.
7, Now time to flash your ROM,
8, Select install zip from sdcard.
9, choose zip from sdcard
10, Navigate to your ROM and select it for flashing.
11, Once complete reboot your phone and you should be running a custom ROM.
It will be worth investing in an app such as titanium backup, this will allow you to back up all your apps and settings, when you install a ROM for the first time and you have to wipe data you will lose everything you have installed and all you settings, Titanium Backup will allow you to restore your apps and setting once you installed a new ROM.
If you want a recommendation for a ROM my personal preference is CM7.
With regards to your other thread, don't worry to much about not having a back up there are guides available for unrooting and going back to stock if you ever need to, not that you will want to after trying custom ROM's
Hope this helps, good luck

Thanks a lot for your reply ,this is exactly what I was looking for now a little calm down

Ok I have tried to flashed clockworkmod recovery and the following issue notification appeared:

Are you Rooted/S-Off? That's the first requirement.

They should be in case I have proceeded according one of the guides successfully.
However I will check if s-off in bootload but where I can check if rootrd?

Do you have superuser installed?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

Yes i have it .

Ok while I wanted to update superuser I've received notification: file package was not correctly signed.
So I think I don't have maybe a root, but I was proceeding exactly according to the guide...
How can I solve it in the best way?:/
Ok it seems that problem with flashing clockworkmod recovery solved by itself, I've flashed it already but still I am curious what about problem mentioned above?

I have just done it, it works pretty well.
Superuser still the same problem. However maybe I forget to mention it but I've already installed it. It was installed automatically during I was rooting my phone using adb command. Now I just wanted to update it and the problem appears as I described in one of the previous posts herein.
Maybe it is not necessary to update it but I am curious why this problem occurs.

You have helped already sufficiently a lot.
Now I ma trying to flash the ROM and as the first one I've chosen CM7
Before I'll do it pls confirm if I'm thinking the right way.
First I'll do backup all my apps (also titanium, Superuser and Rom manager need it? I suppose Yes, or somehow they backup automatically?) Maybe better question is what should be backuped, I am asking because on the list in titanium there are also apps like clock which are delivered with the software. You know after flashing a new Rom and restoring all aps I'd like to avoid overwriting them by the backuped ones.
The second is after apps backup I need to move created file from my phone into my PC,right? The same after system backup by clockworkmod recovery?

With titanium you just want to back up user apps and data (apps you have downloaded and installed). You can choose to back up system apps but you don't want to restore them after flashing the new rom.
You don't need to copy back up files to your pc, your memory card will not get wiped during the flashing process.

Quick Root/Unroot Question

My fiance has to send in her phone for replacement. Since the Incredible doesn't have the Privacy/backup app data option, I want to back up her apps so as not to lose data or have to manually do it in the market. From reading, Titanium Backup is the best app for the job and it requires root.
I searched for my answer but found not exactly what I was looking for...
I know I can run unrevoked3 to root the device, install TB then back up my apps...
From here I want to unroot the phone. I read I can install the official 2.1 ROM and it'll erase what unrevoked3 did.. Am I correct in assuming that?
Or could I just factory reset the phone (with the 2.2 OTA) instead of having to install that 2.1 ROM? And will doing this get rid of the custom recovery? Or does a whole ROM need to be flashed to replace the recovery?
Then on the new device, i have to root it, install TB again, install the backups... If it comes preloaded with 2.2, how do i lose root and still hold onto all the apps I just backed up?
Actually I don't care about the new device and getting rid of root...
I just want to make sure the phone I send back no longer has the custom recovery.
Sent from my Virtuous Incredible
To skip the rooting and unrooting, try AppBrain. You can build a list and sync your device with your apps. On the new phone, do the same and it will automatically redownload and install your missing apps.

Will it download them through the market? I only ask so the downloads list in the market shows apps as installed and will notify of updates. And does it back up app data as well?
Sent from my Virtuous Incredible
And modifying my search I found the answer... Downgrading will erase custom recovery...

Yes, it downloads through the market, and does updates, too. No it doesn't save app data. I try to stay away from that due to possible data corruption.

Another question... So phone is rooted, s-off, cw recovery.
Outside of flashing the leak, how would one prepare the phone for the ota without losing apps and data? I've read flashing the stock recovery would do it, but I can't find the 2.2 one or I'm looking in the wrong place. Any help appreciated.

How to get started?

New to rooting/modding/flashing and new to this site. Is there a document that describes the entire process? I searched for a begginer guide but did not find anything. I have so many questions. Do you have to update the kernel before flashing the rom? What do you flash the rom with. Is there a backup and restore utility that can restore my phone back to what it is right now. Can I backup settings and files so that I am running in minutes. If i am looking for speed and battery life what rom should I choose as a business user requiring 100% reliability. I am sure there is a noob guide, but I couldn't find it. Any help or links will be greatly appreciated.

Read this first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=744807. You can root your phone with unrevoked, or learn adb and use that. ROM manager is the best app, you can download and flash roms easily, and backup and restore your phone.
Kernels come with Roms, unless it says otherwise, what you use to flash the rom with is a custom recovery, most people use Clockworkmod which you can easily can install from rom manager in the market after root, you can also make backups using rom manager, or just boot into Clockworkmod, where you can do it too (Power off --> hold volume down + power --> Recovery--> voila, your in Clockwork), A lot of people use an awesome app from the market called titanium backup, with it you can backup apps and restore them on the roms you use (backups are stored on a microsd card) and lastly a great rom to use is Cyanogenmod 7, I'm on RC3 and there are very little bigs, and big fixes are released daily.
Hope that helps!

[Q] HTC Evo 4G

Ok so I'm new to androids completly. Was looking to root my new phone. Let me start off by saying I'm in Japan and have the HTC Evo 4G. I was attempting to use unrevoked but seem to be stuck at how to get to the hboot. I just updated to 2.3.4 and when I power off my phone then hit volume down and power button to gain access to hboot it simply turns the phone back on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Head over the the revolutionary.io site, you should be good to go. You have to use that method to root for gingerbread on the evo.
Check this thread for rooting.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218386
And turn off fast boot in settings/applications and then try to boot into hboot I think thats where it is I'm not sure I haven't been on sense in a while I'm not even sure if a stock ROM has it but look there to boot into hboot.

Take out the battery, put it back in, hold volume down + power key for 3-5 seconds to get into bootloader. Theres a youtube video, can't remember what its called, but it shows step by step on how to root through Revolutionary. Very easy. Took me like 5 min to root

the recovery should be a PC36IMG.zip you flash that in hboot just make sure its on the root of your sdcard not in any folders then when you go to hboot it will find the update just except it.
The su apk should be a flashable zip just boot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache then go to flash zip and choose that zip and flash it then reboot.
If this is your first time in recovery before you do anything make a nandroid backup this will backup everything in case anything goes wrong you can restore the backup and your phone will be just the way it was when you made the backup.

Ok got it all figured out. To be honest you had me lost and I almost made another noob post but I got it now. Figured out the whole flash to SD card deal. I am 100% rooted now. Now for a ROM
I downloaded the synergy rom and it deleted my carrier email app. Do all roms do this?? I'll say it again here, I'm in japan so might be a little different from the states. Anybody know how I could get it back using this rom?? Or a good rom to use that won't delete this app.

What happens is when you flash a rom, its a whole new phone basically [os] so it comes packaged with its own apps, themes. What you can do is:
- go into recovery, backup your current rom
- restore your initial backup
- use / download es file explorer [free] from the market
- enable su permissions, then navigate to /system/app and copy it to your sd card
- go back to recovery, restore the synergy backup
- once booted, install the app from the sd card
or if it was backed up, open titanium backup, restore the app and data.
Thanks for the help teh roxxorz. I got the mail thing figured out. Worked with es file but didn't work to well with titanium backup. Took some trial and error to find all the files needed cuz the paste the whole folder didn't work. Having other issues finding the contacts and getting force closes, so I decided to just not use that rom. On to finding another good one that works.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
So I tried miui and that didn't work as well. Couldn't get the mail to work at all on that rom. Anybody happen to be in Japan and using this phone and could suggest a good rom to use that they have their au email and contacts moved over on, and have minimal issues?

ROOTing my phone, want to make sure a few things

Hello,
I'm thinking about rooting my phone (HTC One X 4.1.1, CID_102) and I want to make sure a few things:
1. I'm going to use this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069904
Exactly as it says there.
Is it ok?
2. When a new update is released, how can I update my device with the root? I will keep using the stock rom, only with ROOT.
3. How can I backup all of my data? Including pics, SMS, whatsapp, app settings and information and etc.
4. Is there an option that when I start my device again after it was formated, it will download all of the previous apps? if not, then I need to make a list of all of my apps.. about 35 but still.
Thanks!
1. Great choice!
2. You need to flash stock recovery. And restore any system apps you've deleted.
Then update normally and you won't lose root.
3. Do a backup in ClockWorkMod recovery or whatever recovery you use. Transfer it to your PC afterwards for safe storage.
4. Download titanium backup and back up all your apps. Then transfer the backup to PC.

Thank you, I guess I will ask about it when there is a new update.
Can you help me with questions 3 and 4?
Well the steps are :
Unlock the bootloader
Flash a custom recovery
In that custom recovery is an option backup and restore, when you press backup it runs a complete nand backup of everything on the phone except the sdcard.
If you want to just backup parts like sms, whatsapp etc etc....then you can use titanium backup like TT said or another program called carbon. These apps allows you to backup just parts that you wantnto backup and restore after an update.
I always start with a clean install of all apps and stuff, it "feels" better to me. But that is a personal opinion

1. Freedom is an application that lets you (with root) to get stuff from applications that costs money (in-app purchase).
2. No, the CM10 has the latinme (if I'm ont mistaken) keyboard, that Android 4.2 has as stock, and it has swipe feature. In CM10 they put swipe in more langauges so I want to use it.
I think that if I'll install the GAPPS from CM10 then it will install this keyboard also. In order to do that, I just need to put the .ZIP file in my phone, and from the recovery install it like I installed SU?
Can I delete it later? and the gapps will update also from market (and not blocked like a pirated application)
Here's the keyboard, install like normal .apk. Pulled from android 4.2.1.

1 . So if i understand it right its some sort of illegal app that gets in app purchases for free ? If so .... its illegal on xda
2 . CM10 is more TT's department i never used those roms so i don't know much about them....sorry, hopefully TT is reading along with us and can shine a light on the keyboard thingy

oh he replied to me, I will update in short if the keyboard works for me as I want or not.
This is just a warning.
Any app that allows you to download a paid app for free is classed as warez on XDA and is not allowed. You can not upload any app on XDA that is a paid app. The warez policy also includes trying to get around in-app purchases.
ok, sorry.
TT, I installed what you sent me, but for some reason the keyboard doesn't appear on Language & keyboard menu.
EDIT:
Didn't notice, it was installed but it doesn't swipe in my language, but in CM10's keyboard (at least for the Galaxy Nexus) it is.
Is there a way to put their keyboard on my phone?

[Q] Unrooted Desire Z with 2.3.3 - backup files?

Hi!
So after a few months of using my UNROOTED Desire Z with HTC Sense 2.1(I think) and Gingerbread 2.3.3 and Launcher X.. my phone has developed several software issues.. hangs up.. works slow.. doesnt install some updates (Package file invalid error) and so on.. Clearing cache from Bootup/Recovery doesnt help as well as clearing data and cache for all apps installed..
So I guess the only way is to factory reset the device.. only prob.. I have Drag Racing/4P1W and other save game files in data/data folder and since the phone is unrooted I cannot uses Titanium or other apps to backup the save game files...
So my question:
Is it possible to temp root the phone and use any methods to backup files from internal memory folder data/data?
I think it is impossible to access the said folders without root. Am I correct?
Any other methods to backup these files would be appreciated. I read you can use adb to pull files without rooting an ICS device but GB does not support that, Would downgrading F/W to attain temp root delete these files?
Many thanks in advance!
Probably the easiest thing to do is temp root with visionary, then back up with titanium and save files to PC. Wipe phone and SD, follow the xda wiki to root, put a custom ROM on and restore only what you need

So if I follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912 till step I-3) Temp-Rooting to Backup (*Optional*).. and then use adb to pull the files or a backup app to back them up.. in theory I would be able to achieve what I want..
Its very late night here now.. so will have to postpone this till tomorrow... will give it a shot and update this thread after that..
Yup you got it! Just follow that guide to a t, then proceed to the xda wiki to finish the rooting process and install a custom rom. If you don't know what to try just grab a rom based of whatever is stock for your phone, you'll find lists and much of them in the developers section.
If this guide is at all confusing look into strawmetals pdf guide of the cyanogen wiki for identical guides just writen differently

I was able to download that PDF you recommended and followed it.. very simple and fast.. I then used the adb pull to get everything from my data/data folder as there were some apps that were missing from TiBu list.. anyways... I have everything I needed to backup now...
Next step.. downgrading and rooting!
Do you know if stock ICS/Jellybean work on DesireZ? Is the H/W fully functional with them? Do they effect speed/performance in any way?
Many thanks!
I'm glad its all working out!
There is no stock ICS or jb for this phone rather custom ROMs. The hardware seems to like gingerbread the best and that's the latest we have all the proper drivers for. Having said that we also have some very talented devs who have made some great ROMs.
I'm guessing by stock you mean non sense ROMs, and depending how you use your phone these ICS and jb ROMs can be just as smooth or smoother than sense gb, and even some of the newer sense and miui ROMs aren't all too shabby.
I'd say try a few out and see what is best for you, just make nandroid backups in recovery before each flash that way you can easily go between ROMs
Happy flashing!

Thanks for all your help!! I'm thinking of giving Jellybaby 1.5.0 a shot.. if I dont like the performance I'll go to GB) I dont like custom ROMs.. wanted to have stock Android.. without HTC sense or anything else... but JB 1.5.0 seems good.. http://droidfirmwares.com/how-to-in...android-4-2-2-jelly-bean-custom-firmware.html
Now to find an installation guide and ROM files!

This is a great tutorial rizzoizzo made, be sure to thank him for his work
You will find all the download links in the developers section for any rom you'd like, including jellybaby. Which if this is what you would like I would recommend darkspadz aosp jb build as jellybaby is really just that with a few apps added and such, but with darkspadz build you will get the base rom. Also ghul as a nice version (both cm10.1 and aosp) that is those pure andromadus bases with added spoofing, very good stuff
