Have you checked all of the settings in the wireless tether app? Are you using wifi encryption, and/or access control? If you have access control enabled, you need to 'accept' your computer for it to work, there is a box you need to check, with the ip address of your computer labled there. If you don't check that box, then you'll get your problem (that's only if you have access control enabled) Otherwise, I'd suggest changing the channel to channel 1, if it isn't already set on 1. If that still fails, I would try a different version of wireless tether. I don't have a link handy, but if you google it, you should find it. There are many different versions, and some don't seem to work correctly on certain Evos for one reason or another. Good luck sir.

yea i did all that, guess ill have to look around for another one to get it to work, does mikfroyo have the hacked hotspot, and if hot spot is hacked why do people still use wireless tether

I am pretty sure MikFroyo has the hacked hotspot. The reason that people use wireless tether (imo) is because 1) it works with 4g, as the hacked hotspot only works on 3g. 2) has more settings and is more easily customizeable. 3) usually seems more reliable (apparently not for you, unfortunately) So I guess if you dont have 4g in your area, or don't use 4g, then the hacked hotspot should work fine for you. I'll see if I can find the link with the different wireless tether apk downloads.
EDIT: here you go. All versions. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list

seems like its been happening often on 4.5
try THIS valpak edition
see if that works..

[Q] Rooted 2.2 and wireless tether on the Dinc

I'm trying to run wireless tether (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/) on a Droid Incredible which has been updated to stock 2.2 and then rooted. I'm running wireless tether 2.0.5 pre 9 and everyting seems to work and I can connect to the phone from my laptop (running Win XP), but then I can maybe sometimes load a single web page and then I get timed out connections. It seems that DNS resolution is working as I get answers from nslookup in a command window.
Is anyone else having problems getting wireless tethering working? The web pages I've found on the subject seem to be from before Froyo came to the Dinc, even the Google project page doesn't mention 2.2.

Have not tried Wireless Tether with 2.2 since I can use the 3G Wirelecc Hotspot that comes with 2.2. All you need to do is this:
1. On your phone, bring up the dialer and dial ##778. This will load EPST.
2. Select EDIT.
3. Enter 000000 for the password.
4. Select SECURITY.
5. Select the username that has [email protected].
6. Edit the username to read [email protected] (delete "dun.").
7. Click the back button to return to the list.
8. Select M.IP DEFAULT PROFILE.
9. Repeat steps 5 and 6.
10. Click on MENU and select COMMIT.
You will not be charged for its use.
Thanks, I just tried that and got it working, but I thought that using the Google code was a little safer that it would never be accidentally switched back to paid mode.
I also noticed that when I tried to change the ssid or password that whenever I left the config screen and came back they were back to default values. Have you been able to change the 3g hotspot ssid/password?

Yu have to have a computer link first and then it will keep the settings. Do not know why they set it up this way.
Thanks, got it changed now - in fact I'm using that connection now.
Does this mean the wireless tether project is totally obsolete?

No, for those who do not have 2.2 yet, it is still an option (and a good one). Some people just like using it over the 3g Wireless Hotspot. I have used both and prefer the 3G Wireless Hotspot. I have no issues with it and get easy connects.
Is the equivalent procedure for the Droid X known yet? I've got a friend who just got his X updated to Froyo.

I do not know. Do a search for ESPT for the Droid X and see if it has a simular setup. If it does, the same changes should work for it.
Any updates on this? I'm on a rooted 2.2 incredible and wifi tether will not play with my ipad. Based upon what I've read, the issue surrounds the fact that the mac address refreshes on the app while the ipad does not like this and most ad hoc connections. I've heard that activaiton hack for the stock mobile wifi is no longer valid. Anyone else tethering?
Thanks,
Tremont
The stock 3g hack still works also wireless tether pre15 works perfect for me

Wireless tether issue after rooting

Sorry, had this in the wrong section before.
I pulled down the files and flashed in that were linked in jcase's links. Superuser works great. Busybox is good to go. Wireless tether comes on and shows root access but the computer can't connect to it at all. Connection error each time. And now the 3G Mobile Hotspot with the applied DUN hack doesn't work either for wireless tether.
Any ideas what the problem might be?
To be clear, i did flash in the inc2 zip referenced by jcase specifically for the wireless tether. Forgot to mention that.

It works for me. I downloaded Wireless Tether from the source.
Are you trying to connect on Windows, Mac, or Linux?
Trying to connect on a Windows 7 machine. I pulled the Wireless Tether app from the source also. Wonder if I grabbed the wrong version. Let me check your link.
Tried the Mac and Windows side of the computer and neither could hook into it. I made sure PDANet was uninstalled from before, then reinstalled the Wireless Tether from your link. Still no good.
This one has me scratching my head a little bit.
Wireless tether is buggy on most phones. The drivers on your computers end can complicate things too. Just keep turning on and off access controls in the tether app as well as cycling WiFi in your computer and it should eventually connect.
Carelessly swyped on my phone so there may be some weird words
Thanks, I'll give that a run. Knew it went to easy on my original Inc when I rooted. I was due for fun.
Looks like the issue for me was the new Wireless 3 Beta. Went back and found the old Wireless 2 apk, installed, and everything is working fine. Good to go.
Thanks again for all the help on here. Y'all rock.

WIFI Tethering on T-mobile

Do you know of any settings to have wifi tethering work without the hotspot plan?
With my old HTC sensation I just had to create a new apn with (epc.tmobile.com) to make it work, but with the GIII this is a no go....
If you are rooted...this works great:

Foxfi In the Play Store. No root needed just read the description to make sure it supports your device.
Thanks, will try Foxfi and let you know if works.

several us (at least on verizon) seem to be able to do it just with toggles. Those with other carriers let us know if it works for you...
Thanks for the info,
I have tried the widgets option but still no go.
Still getting the T-Mobile Hotspot signup page...
anyone able to get this working?
I've also noticed this to be annoying. My HTC Sensation would tether no problem on the same data package. Now T-Mobile has it locked down somehow. Hmm.

Do this, go to Google Play and download (WiFi Tether For Root Users) open the app go to settings, 1) Change device-Profile to Generic ICS. 2) Change Setup-Method to Netd (master). Now go back and click on the big WiFi icon to start tethering, soon as the system finds the device pull down the notification and authorize it, make sure the Access-Control is enabled., your're all set, good luck.

I guess this will encourage him to ROOT, one of the perks you get being rooted.
T mobile can be a real pain in the ass with blocking tethering. I don't believe the app matters best way I know to get around it is to change the user agent on the computer and do not use internet explorer. I believe chrome and firefox have plugins for that.
I tried FoxFi on a non-rooted stock t999, doesn't work. Sends out the wifi signal, but the computer never actually connects to it. Keeps giving me some kind of error when trying to connect to wifi.
Using the built in tether wifi option, I can connect to the wifi being supplied by the sgs3, but any web activity takes me to the t-mobile hotspot sign up page.
OP use firefox, not chrome to tether. seriously.
and you can try downloading the 'tether' app from the clockworkmod website. google it.
I tether my nexus 7 from my sgs3 with foxfi and its really simple. Just make sure u install pdanet on the device u want to tether. I'm doing a tether with Bluetooth.

Very interesting, i use wifi tether for root users and after using for awhile i get a push message saying i need to stop tethering or it will be blocked, and then i recieve another saying it has been blocked, its a push message so im wondering if t-mobile has a app hidden inside the touchwiz rom to make sure it cant tether... sigh
Hi!
I just installed Foxfi app. on my phone. I noticed there is also an app. called "Foxfi AddOn" and according to the description it provides some optional features to the Foxfi application.
Has anyone installed this app? The reason I am asking this question is because I noticed that by agreeing to install this app., personal information is accessed ("general info about what you are doing with the phone, potentially including personal or private info").
The above quote I got when I press to "install" the app., so I would appreciate any feedback/advice on installing this app. Thanks!

Sprint hardware update = no wifi tether?

I was having signal go in and out at work all day yesterday, and it turns out Sprint was replacing a bunch of hardware in my area (Atlanta). Now, I cannot get wifi tether to work. My computer will connect, but it will not get internet. Wired tether works fine. I've tried the Sprint Hotspot in Calkulin's 3.0, and also the Hotspot in the ICS Goodness. I've also tried Open Garden, Wifi Tether for Root, and Fox__* (I can't remember the exact name).
It will not connect. Tried different roms, 3g/4g, resetting network ##72382# or whatever that code is, did a complete reset, tried different roms, etc.
The only thing I can conclude is that whatever Sprint updated here locally fixed this loophole for the hacked hotspot. Atlanta is an "A" market, and typically one of the first to get updated, so if this is the case, maybe nobody else is seeing it
Any ideas on what else I can try?? I need this wifi tether desperately.
have you tried foxfi?

I am not a dev, nor do I know a lot about anything. I seriously doubt changing tower hardware would "fix" a software workaround in a phone for internet sharing. I don't have an answer as to why or why not, but it sounds highly unlikely. I am speculating the two are not related.

Had this same problem about a year or so ago. Download "Root Checker" from Google Play. I forgot why but sometimes Root will be lost but your phone will say you are rooted. I don't remember the details. All you have to do is Root again if this is the case.
Try going into superuser app and updating the su binary, when mine get outdated sometimes wifi tether quits working but other root apps will still work.

Yes, no go on that one as well. No matter the program, I get the issue with my computer "unable to connect" on Windows 7, and also limited/no connectivity with Windows XP..
How can I generate a log to find out what's going on? I'm starting to get the feeling it has something to do w/ wifi driver, although wifi works fine, 4g works fine, 3g works, and wired tether works fine, I cannot get wireless tether to work with 3g or 4g..

I agree, however, I'm assuming there's also an upgrade in software to go along with hardware changes, and they may have rolled something out at the same time. It could be a coincidence, but I've never had a problem before.

Ok, this is interesting. Do you all know if Wifi tether has always been ad hoc? I thought it used to show up as an AP in Windows.
Also, once I updated SU, my XP would connect to Wifi Tether only, but then tried the Win 7 and gave me the same "unable to connect" box. Now, neither of them work again.
Ideas? How to log, etc?
Do you all know now LAN settings would affect connectivity?
It seems Wired Tether uses 172.20.xx.xxx/30 while I believe the others were using 192.168.2.0 or 192.168.1.1, etc.
I'm in the Atlanta area (North West - Kennesaw/Acworth). I use WiFi Tether (the open source app not the built in), just tested it, I was able to connect and use the internet from my Nexus 7.

Foxfi is broken on the SE4GT since the ICS update.
Installation instructions (for Sprint Users):
1. Make sure "Unknown Sources" is checked in phone Settings (under Applications or Developer).
2. Tap on the following links to download the apk file for FoxFi.
3. From phone notifications select the downloaded file. This will install FoxFi.
FoxFi latest version: 1.91.3
*Support for the new Galaxy S3 and the new ICS update for Epic Touch are being worked on. Should be compatible soon in a future update.

As far as I know, the built in sprint hotspot is the only way to get infrastructure mode. All others are adhoc. If there is a setting for it for a profile, I think I remember reading somewhere to pick the galaxy nexus profile.
I just tried Wifi Tether in netd mode and it worked as Infrastructure. Client was Win7 x64.
Good to know too that I have a backup internet source if the main goes out. Not great but better than nothing.

[Q] WiFi Tether Settings Help

So I know there are quite a few threads out there about wifi tether. The general concensus is that WiFi Tether is the best app to use, however I've found that very particular settings are needed to get this to work. While I am not a dev and have not had sucess in getting this app to work on our phone. I thought I would start a thread for those who have had success using the application in hopes that they could share their settings with the rest of us so we can take advantage of 4g as it continues to roll out. I have also tried Barnacle and not had any success either.
I found this on another thread, it was a couple pages deep so I'm reposting here, please swing over to other thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2138144&highlight=wifi+tether&page=2 #13 and give jdock a thanks for his fix. This works, but there is currently a bug in JB that only allows one tether session per boot. Once you disable wifi tether, it will not work again until you reboot the device
TY jdock
Try this:
device profile = generic ics/jb (wlan0)
setup method = netd-ndc (master)
wifi driver reload = checked
enable wifi encryption = unchecked (you can enable it later when it's working unencrypted)
enable access-control = unchecked (you can enable it later when the basics are working)
Now, when I first started with this app, my devices would connect to the AP but then give up because they couldn't get a dhcp address. I found that if I went into the 'change lan' menu and picked a different lan, that it started working (I currently use 10.10.3.0/24).
If you can't get it working, I came up with another method you may be able to use that does not use any app (I have the at&t model but it's probably the same). Basically you turn off wifi, then run a few commands (as root) that bring the wifi interface back up without disabling mobile data. It will connect to your local wireless lan as if you had enabled wifi. Then you can run a socks or http proxy and point your other device at it (easy if you're wanting to tether a pc, maybe not so easy if you're using something else). I haven't tried yet to see if it will route between the networks, which would mean you can just manually change your default gateway to your phone's wlan address and have all traffic go through it.

I hope you get some answers. I haven't been able to get this app to work on by GNex on JB 4.2.1 OR 4.2.2 using 4 different ROMs. The app doesn't seem to have been updated in many months, and I'm assuming that it won't work on JB in any form.

I'm on a JB rom now, and it does work. See the directions I posted from another thread in the OP and wifi tether will work. However, once you turn off wifi tether you will need to reboot the phone for wifi and data to function normally.
Even when Wi-Fi tether runs "with errors" it still works... for some reason my phone doesn't heat up as much when I run with errors -- probably had something to do with the Wi-Fi driver that the app reloads.

My wifi tether setup has no issues with data not working and I can turn it off and on without problems. I've used the phone for calls, texts, and internet after using wifi tether. The only issue is that you cannot turn wifi on after running tether. Once rebooted wifi will turn back on until I use tether again. I'm on a stock rooted JB rom.
Generic ics/jb Wlan0
Netd ndc master
Send Netd max client cmd checked
wifidriver reload checked
Router fix checked
Wifi fix checked
I have access control checked as well but that doesn't matter.
I've yet to be able to get this app working. I've tried these setting before and several other settings to no avail. When I try these, everything but the first item in the log and the last two say they failed. Now it does broadcast it's SSID and I can join the network, but there is no data connection.
I'm on stock Jelly Bean rom. The funny thing is, I used Wifi tether app on Lifeless and Imperium and it worked with a few different settings.

By Changing some settings I can get everthing to work EXCEPT for the Nat Rules, that fails still. If someone can tell me how to fix that perhaps I can get this to work. Seems though the Nat Rules keeps my laptop from detecting the new network I made.

Edit: Nah, still doesn't work with that copy with all the settings checked in the OP. Everything fails still.

By Changing some settings I can get everthing to work EXCEPT for the Nat Rules, that fails still. If someone can tell me how to fix that perhaps I can get this to work. Seems though the Nat Rules keeps my laptop from detecting the new network I made.

Glad to see other people are able to contribute. I'm not a developer so not much I can do except dig around other forums and see what helps. I'm using Imperium Initiative v2.0.1 with wifi tether, with the settings in my op. Maybe there are some adjustments in imperium/lifeless that cause this to work. I will try the file posted and report back to see if I can re-enable wifi after disabling tether.
BUMP!

Bump!
This one works for me with these settings:
Generic ics/jb Wlan0
Netd-Ndc (master)
Send Netd max client cmd - checked
Enable WiFi-Encryption - checked
WiFi-driver reload 2 - checked
Enable Access-Control - checked (If this is checked the first time the client connects, you have to grant it access from your phone. You'll notice a new icon on the top of your phone where all of your running program icons are. When you see it just pull down the list and select it and check your client and then hit apply)Routing fix - checked
Hope this helps
something probably worth mentioning on this, I'm currently on Lifeless 14, and the connections optimizer was screwing with this app. I turned it off and it worked like a charm.
Not of concern to anyone AOSP/AOKP/CM/PA but for stock/lifeless/imperium(i think) this is worth looking into for some folks.

These settings worked for me using the Stock Odex JB 4.1 rom. and the TrevE mod version below. I had to reboot first after installing the apk, and reload the binaries.
throttling
Well since it seems the tethering problem hasn't been remedied yet (touchy and have to restart), has anyone figured out a way to get around sprint's throttling? Unfortunately I for the life of me can't get my MSL, and also unfortunately I hate using the phone to call sprint. hrm.
May I suggest jellybeer? Tethering is built in!
