Nandroid backup problems - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hopefully someone can help me out. I'm running Myns Warm two point two rls5 I was able to perform a backup and restore with no issues. I recently flashed netarchy-toastmod-4.2.1-cfs-bfq-havs-more-smartass-universal-signed kernal, since then I have not been able to perform a backup. Out just seems to get caught in a loop. I started a backup last night and this morning the phone was still backing up. Any suggestions?

Do you receive any errors when backing up? Or is it just taking an obnoxiously long time?
Also, do you know what recovery (and version) you're using by any chance?

I don't receive any errors, it just never completes. How do I find out witch version I have?

Are you using ROM Manager?
Otherwise, hold the power button down until the option to choose recovery opens. Once you boot into recovery, your version should be displayed at the top.
You could also remove and replace the battery, and then press and hold the power button and volume down button at the same moment. After you release, wait a moment and you will find the hboot screen. Press the volume down button until you reach recovery, and then press the power button to boot into recovery.

If you have a previous restore point, I would think about a wipe data/factory reset/wipe cache/wipe dalvik, and then restore your previous backup.

Ok, so I tried doing a full wipe restored from previous restore point. Reflashed kernal, went to do backup again and got the same results it just keeps on hanging up. Any other suggestions?

I presume there were no issues with the stock kernel?
You could flash one of the four other alternative kernels to determine if those settle in.

What recovery was that anyway?
You could consider flashing an older version of Clockwork or flashing Anon RA, and then flashing the alternate kernal.

Correct there was no issue with the stock kernal, I believe I'm using Amon Ra 2.2.1. I guess I could try another kernal. I know all kernals react differently to different phones, but does anyone have experience with kings kernals?

Problem solved with new kernal, thanks for the help!

[Q] Clockwork Recovery v3.0.0.3 troubles

So I updated to the newest version of Clockwork Recovery and have backups that have a previous versions as well but as some of you may or may not know v3 is full of bugs.
I cannot flash or restore anything and the phone boots and force closes everything off of the restore. Only thing that seems to be working is 3G, wifi, and unlock screen. When I slide to unlock I get HTC Sense and HTC DM forced closing over and over.
Is there anyway to force a downgrade or switch to amon ra recovery from recovery mode?
Try doing a full wipe in recovery.

Tried the full wipe but the phone continues to act the same way, keeps rebooting the htc "quietly brilliant" screen.
CWM Recovery 3.0.0.X
If that doesn't work you may have to flash a stock image and re-root. Once re-rooted you can flash a prior recovery 2.5.x and restore from there. That's what I had to do after upgrade to 3.0.0.0. Not hard just frustrating.
I'm pissed. This should have been tested thoroughly. This isn't like some game that FC's. This screwed a lot of people. Unroot and re-root like he said.

I didn't have to reroot.
The latest version of ROM Manager allows u to flash to the 2.5 recovery in the Previous Versions of Clockwork button in ROM manager. Worked like a charm.

I tried that and it didn't work. It said something about scripts.

Help!
I can't reroot or any of that, it won't get past the splash screen. I can access the recovery mode but when I restore a NAND backup or wipe and/or anything else it just reboots right into the splash again. This is a real big disappointment, I dont' think I will ever use clockwork again.

Koush talked about how in 3.0 he removed the support for the old scripts that google has dropped since android 1.6. He and AmonRa kept support for that style of scripting for a while, but most rom builders should have been off of those by now. CyanogenMod has been using the newer scripting for more than 9 months now.
Just flash alternate at bottom of cwm

Is your usb plugged in while either backing up or restoring? Have you tried loading a different version of amon?
U need to flash a kernel, nandroid dont save that
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
so your are saying flash the kernal first then restore nandroid restore?
Okay I just tried what you said and I still got bootloops. And my USB is never plugged in when i do a nandroid.
Something in the backup is giving you bootloops. Try completely wiping, the flashing a new rom.
You can review the recovery log too.

Yes it does. Likely the issue is that a wipe is not being performed before restoring the data in the nandroid.

Garbage in, garbage out.
If your device was unstable when you backed it up, it will continue to be so after you restore.
Try a different Sd card. If your device continues to be unholy, revert back to a stock based rom or even RUU. If your issues persist, you likely have a hardware fault.
Basic troubleshooting 101...
Nandroids dont replace the kernel, do the nand then flash the kernel

When you switched roms, did you do a format data/calkulin's format all? doing either or should fix your bootlooping problem.
I always use caulkins format all. Still get bootloops. Wipe everything, still get bootloops. I dont know what to somwtumes except star all over from scratch.

Same here bro. I've tried 3 different roms this weekend thinking it was just miui causing the problem but I actually got bootloops on all of them . This is weird

"Wipe everything", is that a factory restore/reset?
Cause that's what I do (factory reset).
Then the nand restore............

1st step, did you do anything before this happened? 2nd step, reflash the rom, remembering to wipe everything first.

definitely a weird 'one-off' issue with your cell. But as everyone has already said, wipe and wipe everything. Use VRwipe or something similar and I HIGHLY recommend Amon RA Recovery as apposed to Clockwork recovery (in my opinion) as I have had zero issues after using RA.
Hope that helps

Helpppp pleaseeee

I really need some help. I have no idea what has happened to my phone. Anything I d/l from the market or from the computer fc on my phone. I can't use anything. I tried flashing other roms but any ROM I flash just keeps looping the boot image over n over. Even when I try to restore one of my back ups from recovery it does the same it says error while formating data. Then Wen I reboot it just loops the boot image as well. I've tried everything I can think of. If this has happened to anyone please let me know.

By boot image do you mean "splash screen" and "boot animation?" Can you get back to recovery? If so, which recovery and version? If clockworkmos, make sure it's at least 3.0.0.7 or later if your Inc has an amoled screen, 3.0.0.8 if it's SLCD.
If you can get to recovery, power off the phone. Pull the sd card and check that your computer can read it and it's formatted FAT32.
If so, put a clean copy of a ROM on the root of the SD card. Reinsert it in the phone. Boot to hboot (you are running hboot 0.92 right!?) and then to recovery.
In recovery, factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik, then flash the ROM.
If you're running an older hboot and/or older recovery, see elsewhere on XDA how to update those first.

Have you tried flashing stock froyo and then doing a factory reset from hboot? And by stock froyo i mean the official ruu with stock recovery.
Next time you try to do a wipe, also go into mounts and storage and format boot, data, system, and cache. This happened to me once and this seemed to fix my problem. Now I do it every time.
Tried a different sd card?

Can't install new roms!! WTF? Bootlooping!?!

I have been trying to hook a buddy of mine up with a new rom for his Evo, basically make it exactly like mine with the newest Fresh Rom. I rooted his phone with Revolutionary and it all went just fine, the phone is now rooted with Superuser successfully installed. I put the Fresh zip on his SD card, wiped everything as you are supposed to, and then flashed the zip. It flashes fine and boots up, loads to the lockscreen and setup, but then reboots and does the whole process again, basically a bootloop. I have tried various roms and kernels, wiped over and over again, redownloaded the file, etc., but nothing seems to work. Am I missing something?! I never had this issue installing this rom on my phone. Any help would be appreciated!
try using a different recovery
Something other than RA? What do you suggest? CWM is crap isn't it?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Give newer versions on CWM its work just fine for me. I never had a problem.
Sloth
I am skeptical that a different recovery will fix the problem, but I will give it a try and report back. Is there anything else anyone can come up with?
I had a really weird issue where I couldn't flash any of the Gingerbread roms a while back, and had flashed goodness knows how many since I bought my evo on launch day and rooted it day one when it was available.
Trying different recovery versions might help, but if it doesn't, I'd suggest to unroot it and start all over. Find a post in the dev section on unrooting, go back to the stock sprint rom, and start over.
I did that, and was then able to flash all gingerbread roms and get them to not bootloop.
I'm not the only one that was having the problem, but NO devs could/would help figure it out. Not even flipz. Give it a shot.
Thanks for the info, I will try to Recovery thing first and then do a full wipe out and start over from a stock rom. The weird thing about it is that this is the first time this phone has been rooted and the first attempt at flashing roms.
Just curious, how many times does it reboot?? Over and over and over, or are you pulling the battery after the first or send time?
Over and over
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Try recovery and fast boot from there.
Sloth
I changed recoveries to clock work, and it did not make a difference. I continued to get the same boot loop as before with RA. I just wiped out the entire system, and went into the boot loader to unroot back to stock. I will report back my results once I am done

Changing up the recovery did nothing to fix my problem. I unrooted his phone, regained s-on, flashed a stock rom and am starting over. I will report back my results.
Well damnit anyway, starting all over from scratch did nothing as well. Still get the same damn bootloop. WTF!?!? Anyone else have any other ideas?
I've read every post and I can't think of anything that would help. You think it's a software issue, like inside the phone itself might be bad?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Is this something that could be discovered on a logcat? I have never done one or know how they work, but would anyone be willing to diagnose the problem if I am able to get a logcat?

Have you tried using / flashing any of the zips that are prepackaged " wipes " ?
Have you tried using TWRP recovery ?
I never had any problems while using RA but had numerous failed flashes with Clockwork.
TWRP has been stellar so far ... no failed flashes yet.
