trying 2nd update - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I did the EB13 update via oden (coming from DK27), then i did the 1 click root and removed some sprint bloatware. anyhow i'm unable to do the profile or prl update. I get a internal error message. so now i'm planning to do the update via the samsung tool, will that automatically clear everything necessary to do a fresh install? I want to make sure to update the "right" way this time around, any help is appreciated
As a side note it's strange that the update page is giving an error message: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=559&AT_ID=351569

Yep, it should. The samsung EB13 tool is more or less their version of ODIN, so it will bring everything back to stock.

Thanks, do I need to format the SD card? or clear the cache, etc?

You dont have too
About the error I think they took the update down

[Q] Update to 3.70.651.1 Fails on Rooted EVO!

I have an HTC EVO with software Hardware version 003, 3.29.651.5, S-OFF and HBOOT-0.97.0000. I have tried both update files I could find for 3.70.651.1:
OTA_supersonic_3.70.651.1-3.30.651.3_releasekobxwrvtv9q86pp0.zip
OTA_Supersonic_3.70.651.1-3.29.651.5_releasezq9ss6wyobuo26b5.zip
Neither works as both give errors upon applying update.zip in the recovery menu. "Error 7" and "sd install error" appear with tons of other odd text which don't really form many words. What is really odd is last time my phone was rooted and the update was released I simply did the method above like normal and everything went great. Then once it was done i re-rooted! Not this time though...
I have also tried directly downloading the update to my phone via htc update and installing but I get started and it quickly goes to a frozen yellow triangle icon which then I must pull the battery. My dilemma?
I wanted to try using the file my phone downloads from htc directly but i am unable to find the file on my phone? I have searched with astro file explorer and tried every search strong possible. I searched the SD and then tried to search the main phone memory. The phone says it stores it somewhere in the memory but doesn't say where? Does anyone know where it does? I wanted to try this and see if it will update.
I am basically looking to update and I could care less about root as I can redo it after the update. The big issue is that I want my phone to stay the way it is with no deletion of ANY DATA such as messages, apps, etc... I simply want to update and re-root like I did last time and I can't figure out why it won't let me? I don't want to have to flash a new stock ROM and lose everything or have to use a backup program to do what i did so easily last time.
The new version of unrevoked 3.3 is out so I want to update and be done. Perhaps the root is causing it and can I un-root and then re-root after the update? I hate that HTC released multiple versions of the same phone as updates become extremely tricky now and dangerous. Than You for any help you can provide.
Regards,
FifthE1ement
if you are rooted then you should be using a rooted 3.70.651.1 rom to update. DO NOT do OTAs
I've seen took many people posting threads recently about trying to do the 3.70 ota and thinking they will just reroot after, they all have problems, my suggestion is to grab the radio/pri/nv/wimax update combo and flash it, then flash sprint lovers 3.70 after wiping cache and dalvik. you will still have root and all your apps with the newest software
make a backup in Ra beforehand just in case
Thanks for the quick reply's but I simply want to update like normal. If I can't get root then I can't get root but at least get me to update without overwriting my whole phone and having to make backups of EVERYTHING! Thanks...

I don't like flashing ROMs either. This will let you update.
Do a little more digging and you will find the answers. I admit it took me a little bit to find this l when I updated.
I don't understand why my phone just won't update? I don't really want to flash but thanks for the info. Does anyone know where the EVO stores the updates it downloads? If anyone could please provide me with more info that would be great.
The reason it won't update is because you have a custom recovery. You need to flash the stock recovery to allow you to update.
If you follow the link above it will let you do what you want keeping all your data and upgrading like normal. Just need to flash the stock recovery back. This is as long as you did unrevoked forever.
The downloaded updates are stored in the phones file system under /cache. You need to be able to mount your file system as rw to be able to access. If you don't know how to do that you can find both of the OTA updates on the web and download them. Have to have the correct one for the version you are currently on. The Evo's were at two different revs for this last update.
Even if you find the OTA update and try to apply it from your custom recovery it will not work.
Dig a little more and if you cannot find them I will find the links again, didn't save 'em.
Very good post and I am wondering the same thing. I haven't tried the stock recovery image thing yet but might soon. It was very easy to install the OTA update last time and then just reinstall the recovery image and superuser app. I bet it is not working because they changed the hboot in this version. I too haven't updated yet since I don't like losing my data and potentially missing something. I will probably just say screw it in a couple of weeks once I get time though and just flash the rooted version of the update.

Just flash a rooted copy of the stock ROM and only wipe the cache and dalvik. If you leave your data intact it will save all your settings.
I've been updating this way since I rooted about a month after the phone came out.
WTF!?
Can you point me to a step by step guide xHausx? And this would keep my caller ids, apps, internet files, themes, preferences, etc?

1. Download a Rooted 3.70 Stock Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251)
2. Copy Downloaded rom to your SDCard
3. Reboot to Recovery
4. Wipe Cache
5. Wipe Dalvik-Cache
6. Flash the Zip you copied to your SDCard
7. Reboot
8. Done
Do Not Wipe Data, or you will lose what you are trying to keep.
I'm just curious. The 3.70.651.1 update you were trying to use. Where did you try to DL it from. I think you were using the wrong file.
If you are rooted you should have tried to use these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251
For some reason teshx set that ROM up to wipe data.. you'll have to open the zip and change it.
look in it for meta-inf\com\google\android\update-script file and open that, at the top you will see it say "format DATA:". Just delete that, save, zip and flash.
Why that is set up like that I have no idea
sekigah84 I got it from Sprint via my phone. So it had to be right.
Khilbron & xHausx thanks for the info I'm going to take my nandroid backup and give this a try! I'll post back my info! Also will this update my radios, and other pertinent system files?
damn man you really like your phone stock, and i guess you dont have time to read all 9 stickys helping root people, so we'll just need to fill you in
the bottom line: flash a custom rom and you will never want to go back. NEVER OTA WITH ROOT OR YOU COULD GET SCREWED BADLY. even a stock-ish custom rom like mikfroyo is better than stock. titanium backup will backup all apk's and data. or you can just not wipe data.
flash myns.
just do it
you wont regret it
or just stick with stock.

How to restore stock Google apps in Jelly Bean?

Hi,
I have a GSM Galaxy Nexus (yakju) on Jelly Bean 4.1.1, rooted. Had CWM but flashed stock recovery to resolve the below-mentioned issue with OTA.
I've been having some trouble updating to OTA 4.1.2. Whenever I get the OTA push, I proceed with the upgrade but the process fails. I get the following error messages in recovery:
Code:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Verifying current system...
assert failed: apply_patch_check("/system/app/Gmail.apk", "d547e1c4367c20c48614c2623c9e30f72976bf67", "21177453e64d114f4c208720a0f57d9765665a1d")

Installation aborted.
Now as I gathered from the message, it seems that it cannot authenticate the Gmail app currently in my system. I'm using the 100% stock version, but I do recall that sometime back I used the "merge system apps updates into ROM" feature in Titanium Backup Pro. I believe it merged the updated Gmail, Maps and Play Store apps into the system.
Could someone help me figure out a way to make the system recognize the files as original? I've read at places that I can disable the assert on said files in the OTA file, but I don't want to do that. I want to fix this thing once and for all so that I can get future OTAs (4.2 JB) without any problem. Please help me out. Thanks!
A better way to load 4.1.2 is to download the stock ROM from Google's website and load it using fastboot. This way you can receive OTAs in the future since you be 100% stock.

Thanks for replying. Could you please share what's the procedure for that? And by stock ROM, I assume you mean the 15MB update archive? Or should I be downloading the full ROM?
Also, I understand that I will lose root, which I can get again no problem. But will there be any other data loss? Please confirm. Thanks!

Hi Evo,
to go to 4.1.2 stock rom, you can download the factory image from Google for Galaxy Nexus GSM. This one is about 235 MB big. Unpack it and also check out this thread.
Just flashing should not delete your data, but unlocking your boot loader will and of course if you wipe and make a clean ROM flashing.
Ok we've got a problem.
I downloaded the factory image and flashed it. My bootloader was unlocked already, but it still wiped my device clean. No pictures, nothing on the internal memory, it wiped EVERYTHING. I used Galaxy Nexus Toolkit by Mark Skippen to flash the image.
Ben, you said just flashing should not wipe my data. Instead, it's wiped EVERYTHING.
I took a NANDROID backup just before the flash, and also took full Titanuim Backups today. Unfortunately I forgot to copy them off the device, so they are gone with it! And I'm left with a brand ****ing new GNex! :s
Is there any way to recover the data that was on there? I've read thread names that one can recover data off of microSD cards. Can the same work for the phone memory? I need a way out. There was some precious personal and work data in there that I cannot afford to lose. Someone please help me recover that? Thanks!

[Q] How to go back to stock, update to newest samsung update and root

I want to get the latest update from Samsung and I have been searching for hours trying to find some concrete information. I want to go back to a complete restore to get rid of all of the junk that I have accumulated over the months. Mainly I want to get rid of all the crap because some things on my phone are not working correctly and I am trying to troubleshoot an app for an app developer, I think a complete restore will see if the problem is with my phone specifically or the app just does not work with the US S4. Then I want to update to the newest Samsung update that has not yet been released in the US and then root my phone. After that I want to flash a new rom and kernel. The main thing I need help with, or a least need more information about is if I go back to stock will I lose my root and how can I update to the newest Samsung update. If I lose my root can I achieve root with the newest update? I want to get rid of everything on my phone in the process to gain some more storage. What should I do? Any links or instructions or input would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

Ok. here is what to do:
#1: Go into the settings of the phone >settings>accounts tab>Backup and reset> and click Factory data reset.
#2: Odin flash the latest official stock Samsung M919 Tmobile Touchwiz firmware.
Here is the download link: http://k0nane.info/rom/M919UVUAMDL_M919TMBAMDL_TMB.zip
After flashing this official Tmobile your phone will be 100% stock and unrooted like the day you bought it.
If you need to download Odin (a windows application), here is the link for it: http://k0nane.info/rom/odin-307.zip
NOTE: this method will wipe your internal sdcard so back it up to your computer if you want to save
anything which is on it now. Also remove the external sdcard from the phone before doing anything.
If you go back to 100% stock you will loose root for sure, but it's easy to
re-root the latest M919 tmobile firmware which is in the link above.
Good luck!

Have you backed up your internal sdcard to your computer?
If you did then connect the usb cable from computer to your phone and open up
"phone" in windows explorer.
See if you have any video's, pictures, music, zip files and nandroid backups on your internal
sdcard using windows explorer so you can see exactly what you have.
Delete all music/pictures/videos/zip files and be sure to check inside the folder and sub folders
in the clockworkmod folder and in the TWRP folder and sub folders and if you see any nandroid
backups delete them. *each nandroid backup takes approx 3GB of space*
Remove your external sdcard first if you have one so you don't by error delete stuff on it.
Good luck!

Sure you can do it all automatically, but I just did not want to post it just in case
you wanted to save stuff on your internal sdcard.
The way to do it automatically is to go into recovery of cwm or twrp
and select the option in the "advanced" section of twrp or cwm of "format SDCARD".
That way it will wipe all the user data including backups, pictures, videos, music, zip files
and or anything else which is on your internal sdcard.
It will not wipe or format any of the protected system files which are required and are part
of the firmware/rom in the phone. So after formatting sdcard the phone will still boot and
work properly like a stock phone.
Good luck!

Okay the instructions are wrong.
Keeping this short as I'm mobile..
1 use triangle away to reset binary flash counter as if you don't trying to upgrade will result in "device is modified error" (you must have root for triangle away to work)
2 follow triangle away instructions.
3 once triangle away has worked it's magic, at the end it asks you to reboot normally or into download mode. Select download mode.
4 then once in download mode flash the Odin stock file mentioned above.
5 once that's finished and it reboots itself, hold the volume up key to enter recovery
6 once in stock recovery use volume keys to navigate to "wipe data factory reset" (this is what wipes internal sd card) use power button to make selection.
7 once it's done select "reboot system"
8 let it boot and you now have a truly 100 percent stock untouched device.
There you go.
Once you got the update (which I don't think will be for awhile)
Just use Odin to flash the recovery of choice back to your device then reboot to the new recovery and flash supersu zip in recovery to regain root.

I used this thread to get back to stock so my flash counter would be reset back to 0 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2363882
Then I used KIES recovery to reflash 4.1.1 just to be sure it was exactly what Samsung intended.
Then when i checked for OTA update (while on 4.1.1) it found one and took a while to download. When it installed the update, it was already to 4.3 - i guess it skipped the 4.1.2 official update.
I then did a master reset from the settings menu and deleted everything so that 4.3 could start fresh. I haven't had any problems with the stock 4.3.

I didn't factory reset before flashing because i knew that when I use KIES to do a recovery it will erase everything on the phone. However, I did wipe cache and dalvic in recovery beforehand... well, come to think of it, i probably did also wipe data before flashing the 4.1.1 that resets the flash counter.
Regarding backing up my files, I have all the files I need on an external sd card so all i have to do is take out the card. Plus, I also use Google Drive to store my pictures as I take them with the camera. no real need to back-up things because things are saved somewhere else, and not directly to the phone. I will probably use the phone storage more now, though since I won't be flashing anything for a while. Taking a break from flashing.
Hope it works out for you.

Taking a break from flashing.

have you ever tried Helium? I was planning to use that for backup of my apps data.
last time I recovered/flashed phone was with Windows Mobile... so yeah really behind with all of this.
So if I first use helium for backup and then do factory reset, then flash the stock 4.1.1.
I know google account has all my contacts and calendar.
After I have the stock 4.1.1 back I should be able to update to 4.3 and from there restore the backup?

Never used Helium. I have use Titanium Backup before. It's widely used for backing up app data. You can get it in the Play Store. Make sure you don't try to restore system data - it will cause all kinds of trouble. I don't usually restore app data anymore - well, now that I'm on stock I can't, anyway. I always had some kind of issue, whether it be small or big, when I restored data. who knows, maybe I wasn't doing it exactly right.
I'm not sure if restoring apps from 4.1.1 to a 4.3 base would be safe or not. remember, if you try, that means you'll have to root the 4.3 and that will trip your warranty bit count off of zero, so if you're concerned about warranty, you shouldn't root. (if you upgrade to 4.3 stock, you can go to download mode and see that they now have included two flash counts: one to count custom binaries (that can be reset) and the other one called warranty bit, that no one here knows how to reset yet.)
according to Helium, it doesn't require root. I will make a backup just in case, just want my angry birds progress...
still at work, so I can't download the file (yet), so how exactly does this work, since it says you don't need odin?

After you download it, make sure it's on your internal sd card in the phone. Boot into ClockWorkMod recovery, wipe data/factory reset, clear cache, clear dalvic from the advanced menu, then flash the zip. that's it. near the end of the flash it will ask you if you want to keep root. i chose no since I knew I was going to be update to the official release. I've heard of people having problems trying to update OTA with root.
Just make sure that updating to 4.3 is what you want because it will limit what you can do with the device after you have the new bootloaders.

Missing data after 4.4 update

Please help. My wife did the 4.4 kit kat update on her note 8 5110. Update seems to finish fine but now all her data is gone. It looks like the internal SD card is cleaned. However, I see that under storage, it says that only 1.2 gb is free so it seems that the data is still there but not mounted. I tried to root the tablet using CF root method but every time I go into the tablet, it says that SU has stopped. I install Philz CMW to try to fix root but that did not work either.
Hopefully someone is able to help me. I was hoping to be able to root and go searching for the files but no such luck. I am not too familiar with adb commands but if someone can point me in the right direction to be able to copy her personal files out and move them to the new location on the tablet. Thank you.

Are you letting recovery flash SuperSU for you? If so, I suggest that you try flashing the installable zip file in recovery from this page instead.

Thanks for the reply ramjet. I've tried both CF-Auto-Root and just letting recovery try to fix it. I've tried flashing the file you suggested and it still did not work.

Hmmm...
Did you test for root with Root Checker? I don't understand how you could have done all that and still not be rooted.
Since you have a working recovery you might want to try backing up all your partitions to the SD card, removing the SD card, and flashing the 4.4.2 update with Odin. Then try the CF-Auto-Root again and if that completes successfully you can flash your custom recovery, insert the SD card, restore the data partition from the backup and look for the missing data.

Can you point me to an odin package for the 4.4? I tried searching on google and it points me to sammobile.com. Looks like you have to pay to download. It tried reflashing the cmw package with my sd card and it keeps failing. Not enough space.
I am ready at this point to wipe out everything start clean on the tablet.
Thanks.

It is sammobile.com but you don't have to pay.
Assuming you have a GT-N5110 the firmware you need is here, including instructions on how to install it.

Thanks for your help ramjet. I made an account and downloading. I'll try it out and hopefully it clears my issues.
Do the files not show with My Files, or Solid Explorer, or even plugging it into a PC?

No luck at all. I ended up formatting everything to clean the card then odin the official 4.4 update. Wife only had pictures (sync to dropbox) and audiobooks on there. Still could not get root. I was not able to flash any 4.4 rom either.
Guess I am going back to 4.2.2. That version rooted fine and I have a Titanium backup of her tablet before updating to 4.4. Hopefully everything is okay after 4.2.2.
