-Internal memory : jeez i installer 2 dozen applications and i got 13m left and the alert about low memory (which cant be deleted)
seriously??? 13mb left???? how can it be possible ! when i check the application list, i have like 40-60mb (made a quick calcul) installed ! i cant even isntall google earth ! and what the hell is "contact list" app? its almost 30mo!!
-Wifi tethering : any way without root? for tether with ipad
-Push mail through the HTC app...possible?

-voicesearch and speech to text. Installed HTC IME KB, Voice app and nothing work. I cant have the keyboard in the list of KB. And voice search doesnt work...(error connex)
thanks a lot
You want WinMo
oh no i dont
For all those questions, yes you do as it does them...the Desire doesn't as yet.
- It has Push for Googlemail, I think there is another app you can use for other account types
- Can't change default apps
- Can't use other SMS software (I don't think, could be wrong)
- Can't tether without rooting (as you've said)
HD2 does all these, some stock some with custom ROMs

- what about the support for Exchange push in the mail program?
-if you install another program, you may be able to. you can remove the defaults for applications in the settings. that's why you can switch between homescreens once you have installed launcher2.apk....
- there's plenty of other SMS software in the market, ChompSMS, Handcent etc.
- yes, you need to root.
But overall, yeah, it sounds like for the kinda stuff you want to do, winmo would be better all round.

Honestly you don't need google Earth it's 22mb and the maps does the same thing!
Also big drain on battery (Earth and Maps) so not something you would want to use all the time anyhow.
Search around for apps as you may find one that does same but for less space.
Also, are you using all the apps? Are a lot of them just games?
Be smart with the limited space.
It's not ideal I know, but until anything changes not a lot you can do.
-Internal memory
Yes, this is a pain. I wish Google would let us put stuff on SD card already without having to root the phone and HTC needs to put less preinstalled crap too replacing it with OTA on demand instead. Teeter? WTH!
-Wifi tethering
Yes, PDANet and some other application allow BT/WiFi/USD tethering with Windows/OSX and Linux. Probably not with iPad because it has no USB, BT is crap (if same as on iPhone) ... not real OS X.
-Push mail through the HTC app...possible?
No. Google's own email app will do push for Gmail accounts only. HTC email will check at specified intervals.
-How can i change the defaut app to open for X action...
You can't, as far as I know.
-Can i use another SMS software with the HTC message widget? exemple when i click new message it open the defaut one...
Yes. There are two very popular ones, but HTC's own is all I need.
-How can i use picasa ? i keep having an error (authentification...) in gallery app.
Yes. Not sure about your error. You can get Gallery app from N1 and use that instead of HTC's Photos.
-voicesearch and speech to text. Installed HTC IME KB, Voice app and nothing work. I cant have the keyboard in the list of KB. And voice search doesnt work...(error connex)
Hmm, by default HTC IME doesn't do voice. I installed Voice Search with Android default keyboard and have that feature now. Although I rarely use it. Swype FTW! Check the forums there was a link to the apk to get it all working.
thanks a lot...for the answer even though some are really mindblowing in the worst way
thx !
yup yup
You've summed up some of the biggest problems with Android and the Desire.
The inability to install apps to an SD card is a big problem - one that can be solved by waiting for root, or by waiting for the next release of Android (I think Google have said they are working on this feature for the next version). Basically, just by waiting.
I use IMAP IDLE with the K-9 email app for push IMAP email from my fastmail.fm account. Works instantly and perfectly. Love it.
Hope this helps a little.
what the hell is "contact list" (in application / manage application)

My Applications/Manage Applications FCs on me all the time (it is probably some app installed from apk that causes this problem). Don't see said app show up in APK or ASTRO.

Chrome To Phone is a feature of Froyo that works with the Chrome browser (and possibly FireFox) that allows you to send links from your desktop to your Android phone.
Currently, it only seems to work on 2.2 but I was wondering if anyone has figured out a way to get it working on 2.1?
I've got the "LinkPush" app, but it doesn't work as well (seems to only work via google talk for me.)
If not, I guess I'll have to wait for a Froyo release that supports the cameras.

most every website has a "share" or "send" button as well as google maps just "share" or "send" it to yourself via email, it takes like almost no time whatsoever...then you can just open the email and follow the link on your phone...

At the risk of being yelled at, I think you are missing the point of the question.
Yes, it's possible now to just email a link to myself or something, but it's a rather cool feature to just _push_ it to the phone, and not have to worry about manually navigating through several other steps in the process.
Having said that, I've heard nothing about 2.1 getting that function, and I think it's probably more of a priority to most people to just get 2.2 versus 2.1 with a few hacked functions of 2.2. However, that's my opinion. Yours may vary.

no i understood the question the fact is that we probably are not going to be seeing that in 2.1 well at least not right now, i mean you never know, and frankly if clicking on a link and adding your email address and then clicking send, then just dragging the notification panel and opening the email link on your phone is too much work for you....then... lol i mean its 5 steps haha
Usually with developers, we look for the way to do it how we want (ex. How he was asking). But I am sure he appreciates the HowTo on sending an email.
On a real note, I actually haven't played around with the feature to much but Ill atleast look into it for you. It's a good idea to suggest things while we wait for the 2.1 official or atleast dealing with the half and halfs of cook-ups

my problem is that not every site has the link, and with google maps it sends you a link to the maps.google.com page. Chrome to phone sends a command to your phone that opens up the map in the google maps application, not the browser, so from there you can navigate and such.
Thanks for looking into it rathfon..
Yeah, I know you can email links back and forth, but that's not really what I'm looking for. Any phone can do that, I'm looking more for Google's Continuous Client idea. Pushing a map link opens in maps, pushing a link to an android app opens it in the market, a browser link in the browser, etc. It's just a better way of doing things that I've wanted for a very long time. I thought of it almost 3 years ago with the first iPhone, but I didn't/don't have the know-how to do it.
LinkPush is working fairly well for me at the moment. It's a small android icon located next to the address bar, just a click of the icon sends a Google Talk message to my phone with the link, or I can open the LinkPush app and it lists the link on the top.
It's not as seamless as Google's method, but it works in 2.1 and below, and it's instant with almost no "work". I guess it's a good compromise for now until we get a working Froyo release.

actually for google maps link when you click on it, it gives you the option to either open it in your browser or the actual map app....if you tried it out you would see. if it doesn't give you the option then go to your internet browser in the applications manager and clear your default, thats probably why it wont ask you to choose a program.
Sounds like a good idea
I like the idea. I guess everyone has moved on to getting Froyo working.
Hi,
when clicking on the (street) address of a contact in the HTC Desire HD contact app, I'm not offered a choice anymore. The default action now is to open the address in the HTC locations application. I used to get a choice between HTC locations, Google Maps, and other navigation programs. I do not want to use HTC locations.
I can't find a way to get the choice back again. I downloaded DefaultApp Reset by T.Fujii from the market and it offered to delete the default actions of HTC Sense and the Browser. I did that, without success. Looking in other threads the advice was to use ClearDefault from the market. I couldn't find that one, but I guess DefaulApp Reset does the same.
I can go to settings > applications > manage applications, and delete default actions of programs. In fact, the DefaultApp Reset just takes you there too. None of the applications I associate with my problem have the possibility to hit "clear default actions", they're all greyed out. I have looked into the following applications:
Contacts
Contact widget
Friend stream and - widget
HTC Hub
HTC Likes
HTC location service
HTC Sense
HTC Sync
Settings
Settings wizard
Location
Locations
Locations launcher
Locations widget
Maps
Settings widget
Street View
Maybe the names are a bit wrong, I'm not using english on my device.
After clearing HTC Sense and Browser with the app, no more new applications show up anymore that can be undone from default actions.
What can I do?

I never had the choice. It always went to Google maps, but now goes to HTC Locations. This came up on another thread - it could have been over on Androidfourms - and there is nothing to change to fix it on a stock phone (that anyone has found - maybe if it's rooted). All I want is to be able to see the full postal address in writing and then, *if* I wanted, to then see it on a 'map'.
After checking a few apps out I went and installed Youlu and it does exactly what I want. Shows the address then launches Google maps if you tap it. It'd be good to be able to change the application that is launched but you can't have everything ....
Dave
Hmm, that would suck. I'm pretty sure I had the choice once....
I figured it out, all of a sudden. When you are in the contact list, you can click on the picture of a contact in stead of on the name. Then you get a small widget that has a Map option to the utmost right. That one opens a window where I can chose between Google Maps and Waze, where I was looking for.
That doesn't solve your problem but does solve mine. Happy again!

You're right. Sort of .... On mine (latest OTA update - the one that was pulled) I get that widget but choosing the map option gets me Google maps. No choices. very strange that touching the address gets you Locations but the map option on the contact picture is Google ..... Me thinks HTC's software engineers need some better QA testing!
Dave
Well the choice I get is between Maps and Waze. So, if you don't use Waze - which you should by the way - that might be the reason you don't have a choice.
Or, it could be that you have ticked the always use this action box. You might be able to undo that, using the method I described in my topic start. BTW, it seems that deleting to many apps' default actions broke up all Auto Sync on my device. Got it up and running now after some fiddling around.
Easy check: download Waze from the market and see if you get a choice.
I'm wondering what the requirements for an app are to show up in the choice list.
wanted to post the same...
... question...
my dhd stock newest OTA update also doesnt ask which maps application should be startet.
it just opens "locations" instead of asking.
thanks for the workaround over the contact list, works fine ;=) but isn't a solution...
best regards,
mike
Any update for this problem ?
searching as you are
sorry, just a few days ago i searched google again.
no solution found :=)
if you find one, please share it
Just got myself a GN and I was a bit disappointed with the dialer.
With my old phone I could just spelling the name of a contact and the dialer would list contacts.
GN just puts in the numbers no direct search ??
Is it some option or something I am missing or do I need another dialer??
Love the feel of it just wish I did not have to go to contacts to find a number...
The stock dialer does not support T9 Smart dial. Either use another dialer, or use the google search bar to search for the contact you want to call.
Or spend a minute amount effort and tap the search icon in the bottom left of the dialer then start typing the name. It's not really much time wasted...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I also wish the T9 dialer was built into stock Android as it is with HTC Sense, Touchwiz and MIUI.
If you would like Google to change this, star the following threads in the Android issue tracker:
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...t9&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...t9&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...t9&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
While it may not be much more effort, it is quite clear that this feature is available in other stock dialers, then why not in google's own?
I also store my contacts on the sim card and if anyone has noticed, then you cannot import all contacts into phone at once. You have to manually go through all contacts which again is a sore point.
I think that is a valid point to expect in the dialer, not whether searching seperately is an option or not!

Why not synchronise your contacts with google, so if you:
1. lose your phone.
2. Phone gets broken
3. Somebody steals it
it only takes 2 minutes before you have all your contacts again.
There are a lot of Contacts apps around on the market, and i bet even 1 of them supports transferring your sim contacts to the phone.
Earlier i used GO Contacts, but they don't support ICS yet. So for now im using DW Contacts (looks ok, only used it for an hour though).

Yes and accepted, but that behaviour has been standard all along. Rather than make me select one contact at a time from my hundred contacts, that one simple click would have been better. Anyways I prefer not to upload contacts into the cloud because
1. I may not have the consent of some of the ppl that I hold details for, e.g. bosses and they may not prefer it and
2. I personally do not know who or how this data is used/accessed in which case I would rather not. And personally judging by Google's appetite for gathering our personal data, I would rather opt out. Its just me....
Sorry OP to have hijacked your thread..
Correction - User error Apologies, I have just read the manual and it does allow for an 'import all' option to copy all contacts from SIM to phone.
To bad wish they would put that in its a very nice feature I seen no reason to be left out.
Anyone know a good dialer to use instead ?? Would love one with the same look if possible ???
Perhaps it is some sort of lawsuit infringement that prohibits them to build it into the dialer. I don't think Apple has this either, right? Maybe Microsoft has the patent on it.
3rd party dialers have this feature. In fact, I just install the MIUI dialer because it is just awesome. It is in the market and not listed under "MIUI Dialer" but "e9" or something. It works great.

I know from gingerbread that 3rd party apps can't clear unanswered calls. Some if the apps solves that by using the stock dialer list when selecting the notification.
Anyway its limitations in the OS and not the apps.

I use the Gmail app and also cannot figure out how to archive vs. just trashing. Anyone??
The latest version of gmail 4.2 has an option for swype message which states archive or delete but when I swype a message it always deletes it. There are no other options that I can find unless you set this on via the web browser. Point is that the option is there so perhaps we may see another option or a popup for the swype action in future builds.
However, also in the 4.2 app if you select a message with the little checkbox you get a file-cabinet icon popup at the bottom of the screen - Archive! Not sure if this exists in the older version as no longer have it on my phone.

Thanks for the info.
Not sure if this is how it's SUPPOSED to be done, but....if I remove the INBOX label from the mail, it disappears from the inbox, and magically goes to ALL MAIL, and at the bottom of the screen reads "1 archived." Only took me four hours to figure that out! I'm sure there must be a tutorial somewhere...I went onto the Google Help site, and there was no reference to this at all. Maybe I'm just a little too picky.
How do I update to GMail 4.2 and/or find out which version is on my S3? As you can tell, I'm new to Android.
In all honesty I am not overly familiar with gmail as have other accounts that I use, I also did not realise that a message without a lable is an archived one!
For 4.2 follow the instructions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933273&highlight=gmail+4+2
I would use the .apk to install it as you are new to android. Take a read through the thread to make sure you understand everything but it is pretty simple.
