Somehow, the framework-res.apk; browser.apk; HTCDialer.apk; HTCclockwidget.apk were all moved to app backup in the sdcard in the storage optimizer file.
I have tried to reinstall, and it states it is a system application and asks if I still want to replace. I hit ok then install. It moves forward and the done, but it states that application not installed.
This has the WiFi access on it, and I am most concerned about not being able to use the WiFi.
What can I do, EVO 2.2.
You should be able to do it with adb shell.

I'm not sure I understand how that happened, and I'm slightly confused by it. Are you sure those files were actually moved, and not copied to the sd card? I didn't think the phone would even be able to run without the framework-res.apk.
Anyways, to answer your question, you can use Root Explorer (3 or 4 bucks in the market, and well worth it) or ES File Explorer (free) to make changes in the system folder. I use root explorer to add/remove system applications all the time. You just need to click a button within the root explorer app to mount the system read write. Once you do that, you can add, delete, edit, etc anything in the system folder. just navigate to /system/app. Good luck.
Edit: and of course, as the other poster suggested, you would also be able to do it with ADB, if you're familiar with it.
i think they were copied, yes, but they are not in use, and I need to get them back to the proper place for use. Thanks, I will try root explorer.

I am trying to remove some apps I dont use or want like the mail app and others and I know i have nand protection unlocked becasue I can run nand backup and restore. But when i run adb shell and rm Mail.apk i get message of rm failed for Mail.apk, read only file system. I am a noob with adb but is it possible i dont have nand unlocked?
Being able to NAND backup and restore doesn't have anything to do with having NAND unlocked.
You obviously don't have full root.
download or find (please pay for it on the market)
root explorer, run it, this will put you on the / directory which is the root of the phone, not the sd card, and up in the top right corner it says mount r/o or mount r/w
by default it is read only r/o
hit the button and beside it you will see small text saying 'mounted r/w'
if it lets you mount r/w then you should be good to go.
just navigate to your /system/app filder, long press on the apk file you want to delete and choose delete, it will error out if you dont have r/w access, but make sure the upper right corner still says 'mounted r/w' - sometimes when you mount the phone in the opening page, it doesnt mount everything as r/w so you might have to mount the /system/app folder.
so, if you have it mounted r/w and it says so, and it wont let you delete or rename anything, then you know that you do not have a full root, just the partial root and you will have to go thru and reroot it for full access.
there are simpler ways i imagine but root explorer is the king of file explorers as far as i am concerned.
the only thing it needs is a built in FTP and SMB (windows network) explorer.

stock rooted rom doesnt matter, thats what i run from time to time and i can delete/move/rename anythign i want anywhere on the phone (ok i havent tried every folder but have not hit a file/folder i couldnt alter yet, because i have full root access.

I asked because I had a similar problem when I had stock rooted. Once I changed it went away.

someone correct me here but do you have SuperUser installed?
doesnt he have to have superuser installed to do it via root explorer, or login to a terminal via adb with 'su' to rename/move/delete
if you didnt type su, and then get the $ prompt you cant do what you are trying to do. ... ???
i dont think you need to type su to do the following command but it probably wouldn't hurt ??

You can use Estrongs File Explorer and use the root option. No payment required. Unless you are running CM ROM, be sure to turn off the root option before closing the program, otherwise next time you open ES it will give a force close.

wow I love this forum what a huge response in such a short time I'm gonna test to see if I don't have nand properly unlocked and I tried using android mate to delete the apks and that didn't work either but I'm running fresh 1.0.2 currently
Just tried using es file explorer with root explorer and mount file system as writable and deleted the apk and everything worked great the app is gone! Thank you for the help this means i have nand unlocked right? I must have been doing something wrong in the adb shell
You can also issue the command 'adb remount'.
The system partition is mounted read only at start up and this command mounts it read/write. It has nothing to do at all with your NAND.

I removed wireless_tether using root explorer. When i try to install another version of wireless_tether, it says i am trying to overwrite another app, then wont let me install because it says its a system app. then I go in to look and see if I had truly removed it , it has a different name "andro tether" under settings/apps/manage apps. It doesn't show this in the root explorer for me to delete it. How can I fully delete it if its not showing there anymore.

So last night I received the official OTA update on my phone. I'm not really ready for it (mainly because Lockpicker doesn't work on 2.2 yet).
Anyway, I digress. Anyone know the physical location of the update.zip file is downloaded to? The one on the root of my sd card is way too small to be the right one. I've searched through the directories with Astro File Manager and came up empty. It's on there though. I just can't seem to find it.
I just want to move the file for future use. The dialog box to update is already getting on my nerves and the day just started.
On a side note, is it safe to assume my update will fail with any changes I have made to the system folders? I haven't done a lot but I know I have done a few things. I may end up just going the RUU route when I'm ready. I think I've just renamed some bogus apps (City ID, etc.), updated the kernel to allow wireless tethering, installed boot animations with sound, and updated the splash screen after enabling S-OFF. I'm going to try and restore as much as I can to stock up ultimately will probably forgotten something I did. The boot animations and splash screen are probably not part of the update checksum, right?
I believe it's in /cache. I'm not 100% sure though, never actually had to check, just what i've heard. Try using root explorer and checking.

Is Root Explorer really better than ASTRO File Manager? Would it allow me to access this directory? ASTRO File Manager didn't see anything due to rights probably. Root Explorer nice but I'm not sure if it's worth the cash. Worth it?
I was able to pull the via adb by mounting the system.

Any ideas of what files I can delete other than the .zip file? I deleted the zip file but still am getting the update dialog.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know that update.zip can be used on any Incredible, or is there some sort of authentication process?
Any Droid Incredible that is at the proper level can use the update. Same as getting it Over The Air.
Does anyone know what files I should delete in the /cache folder to get rid of whatever files the OTA pushed? It tried to update but failed and am trying to get rid of all traces of it.

It's in /cache, as stated in Post #2 of this thread. You can access it with Root Explorer, which is cool, or via adb in shell by mounting the system folder.
hi im using LeeDrOiD_V2.1a_A2SD , is there any way to force apps to be run from the system memory instead of the sdcard, as far as i can tell it automatically goes to the sdcard?
would prefer to use the system memory for security software such as wavesecure?

Yes to run it from the system partition so it can not be removed the regular way, you just have to move the apk file from /sd-ext/app/ to /system/app/
This can be done using adb commands when in recovery or by applying the s-off hack and use an app like root explorer.

the apk file was in the folder /system/sd/app
and root explorer let me enable r/w access in it, without enabling s-off

Well you might be able to do it this way without s-off but it is not actually on the system partition. It depends on what Rom you are using.
But are you able to uninstall it using the settings menu?
it still gives me the option to uninstall yes, but at this point i just wanted to get it running off the phones memory, rather than off the sd card

yeah, most of the programs out there (like root explorer) won't throw out an error if they can'y mount it as R/W... because HTC was clever enough to hide that it can't be mounted RW without S-off
Rooted using Unrevoked. Have Root Explorer installed and Titanium. I know the system apps are in the folder: System/Apps When using Root Explorer I don't have the options. To uninstall the apps bit I can delete them. However, after deleting them the programs are still there. Same thing happens when I try to do it with Titanium. Is there something I'm overlooking?
System Apps do not get installed/uninstalled. Deleting them is all you need to to. However, since it appears you are still running the stock ROM you need to make sure you delete the corresponding odex file too.
I only had the stock ROM for about a day before I rooted and installed a different ROM (which was deodexed). BUT, I recall reading that both files need to be deleted.
I suggest that instead of deleting the files place them in a backup folder just in case you might need them later on. As mentioned before you must move the APK and its associated ODEX file if it has one. Sprint applications tend to be updated so uninstall the updates then move the Sprint applications using the aforementioned method.

Yes, I am. I have no clue what I'm doing wrong. I swear to god these ****ing apps come right back after I reboot the phone. I delete them with Titanium and/or Root Explorer and after a little while they pop up again. I have no idea what is going on. I rooted with Unrevoked 3.21...maybe something didn't go right?
I also can't get BusyBox to install which is a major pain in da ass because so many apps need it

Anybody save them straight to their computer from amazon.com, or can I pull them off my phone thru Kies after dowloading from the market? Download astro file manager (free) from the market and u can back up your apk's. Save them to ur sd card and transfer it to ur pc.

You can also use JRUMMY6 apps - Ultimate app manager pro or ROM Toolbox Pro. This will save the apk as well as the settings for that app.

Here's a quick guide:
1) Download and install a file explorer application that can write to the system partition. You can use ROOT explorer or ES file explorer. I'm not sure if astro has system writing capabilities.
2) Go into the application and enable root access and the ability to write to system. For ES, you go into settings then scroll down and check "Up to Root" and "Root Explorer" and "Mount File System"
3) Navigate to the apk files that you want to save. For user apps, it's under /data/apps and for system apps (memo, contacts, etc.) it's under /system/apps. Now you probably default to /sdcard so you'll have to go up one more level to reach the root directory (it'll just be "/") to access system or data. Save those apks.
4) If you want to restore these apks to a future phone/ROM, it's the same idea, except you just have to copy paste the files to the directory that you found them in. But you have to watch out for odexed/deodexed apps because they're not compatible. So if you go into /system/apps or /data/apps and you see a .odex file after each respective .apk file, you won't be able to install those apps to a ROM that is deodexed. If you go into those directories and you only see .apk files, you won't be able to install those apps on a stock ROM (almost all custom ROMs are deodexed).
5) All you have to do is copy the files into the directories and reboot, you don't have to install them or anything. Some will say that you should change the permissions to (rw- r-- r--) but I've tried both ways anecdotally and I don't think it makes a difference whether you do or not.
Although I'm not sure why you want to go about it this way, if you have titanium backup it'll do all your backing up and restoring for you. TI backup also just requires the pro license key to be stored in the same location as the backup directory. this way you can change roms and get Ti pro back without needing to re purchase.

try using root explorer
then goto the data/app directory copy your apps and move to whatever folder that you like. then if you want you could sign up for minus and upload all your apks (they have a 2gb upload limit so it works great). Or just connect hercules to computer and pull files from folder you copied to to your computer.
rom tool box pro backs up ALL your installed apks on your sd. manual install and market installed.
