I am living in Japan and have a Softbank branded 001HT HTC Desire HD.
I want to root it so I can remove all the bloatware which I think is causing the phone to have such a poor battery life.
However I want to backup my ROM before I root and delete any apps in case I have to take back under warranty.
How can I do a complete backup of my stock rom, and will I be able to restore it later so that it appears as a standard un rooted phone?
You need to root first, you can then do a nandroid from recovery, if you need to return to stock for any reason, just restore backup and unroot

Hey everyone quick question. I'm still on an unrooted stock 2.1. Wanted to see what Froyo would bring before rooting. Now that it's here I want to upgrade and get my root on. How does this plan sound?
a) Root with unrevoked
b) Titanium backup
c) Root/Nand unlock with Simple Root
d) Restore with titanium backup
e) Nandroid backup
f) Flash one of the rooted 2.2 roms (probably Netarchy's rooted Odexed version)
Does this sound like a good plan to keep root and still keep all my data post wipes? I can flash Simple Root over unrevoked correct? Thanks for the help.
Hey, can anyone tell me the risks of rooting/using a custom ROM and such?
very hard to muck it up with unrevoked, just follow the instructions. dead simple.
Meant having it rooted
well, you wont get OTA updates, but the plus sides are you get custom roms that are tailored for whatever you want, speed, looks, etc, plus aps2sd, the main reason i took the plunge...
Yeah, but I can always return to factory defaults and then get the OTA updates right?
using clockworkmod recovery that is installed when you use unrevoked, make a nandroid backup, use restore to go back to original state, then you will get OTA again, no point though, just pick another rom! I can recomend Roufianos.com Desire V6 rom, had no trouble yet. happy rootin....
Thanks for the advice.

I have a burning question which I'm very unsure as to what the answer is. I want to (finally) root my HTC Desire using Unrevoked3. The thing is, before I flash my phone, I'd like to back everything up first so I don't lose all my information like App data and SMS.
To my understanding, you lose everything when you flash and the unrevoked method flashed a recovery image when it's done. So will that delete all my data? Or is there a way I can Root my HTC desire first, back everything up, and then manually flash my own launcher?
I'll need help and proper steps with this, thank you.
You lose nothing when rooting with unrEVOked, only when flashing a new ROM
Would it be possible for me to retain certain aspects from the HTC stock programmes after I flash it? Like Facebook for HTC Sense and the Sense UI weather Widget?
You mean after you flash a custom ROM? Yes, just flash a Sense custom ROM (like LeeDroid) and you're good to go.
Rooting using unrEVOked does just that - root. It does nothing else so the ROM will be exactly as it is now but with root access
Thanks guys, rooting was a success!
If you don't mind me asking: What app would you recommend I use so I can back up all my contacts, SMSes and Apps (including data) so I can recover everything once I flash my phone?
I use titanium backup, it backs up everything when rooted. Also you might take a look at Mybackup Pro, SMS backup.
I basically want to have nandroid backup of the stock ROM, so I was wondering if this was doable...

Could I run this and still have a custom recovery? Or would it overwrite my recovery with whatever stock has? I don't remember... I plan to run all of the OTA updates and everything in order to have this nandroid backup if/when I need to take my phone into Sprint.

Just wondering if i flash from 4.2.1 official back down to 4.1 official will i have to format my phone or will I lose anything on my phone if i am already rooted with my bootloader unlocked??
Thanks in advance for answers
Yes, data lost
To memory, a downgrade does require a wipe and if it's back to official, you will loose your root access. It isn't too difficult to get it back though. I recommend using Titanium Backup to backup your app+data and memorize/write down your settings so you can put them back into the phone later.
