Does anyone know if using a different render effect in Cyanogenmod (ex. Calibrated (N1) Cool) has any effect on battery life?
And would turning off surface dithering improve battery life noticably?
I've asked these questions in other threads but haven't seen any responses so I was hoping to find some here.
Thanks!
been wondering the same thing. anxious for an answer. i also want to know the benefits of surface dithering
Well I personally leave it checked, but unchecking surface dithering will decrease the picture quality to an extent, and this decreased performance, so thus should increase battery life. And again, I can't give your actual numbers.

I have been rooting for years but I never bothered to really mess with kernel settings to increase battery life. All I'd do is over clock or under clock. What do you guys do to increase battery life? Like for example, lower voltages? I have no clue exactly how this works. I'm kind of tired of carrying 2 spare batteries around lol I'm on Franco's kernel with the hot plug enabled from his app but I might switch to imo's. Anyone wanna be kind enough to help me out please?
I just got a 200mah battery and its animal.
Before I used APEX kernel and took the usual steps, dimmed the screen etc.
Thank you for the response. I'm sorry, I should have stated that I'm on the CDMA version lol
I've been considering a custom rom/kernel and reading up on them a bit. I'm pretty much a n00b, so maybe this is nothing new to you, but it seems that controlling kernel wakelocks and specialized cpu governor settings + undervolting are the main things that increase battery life. I think minimizing unnecessary wakelocks seems to be the main key.
For the most part, battery drain comes down to two issues:
1. Screen use (not much we can do here)
2. Radio use (which tends to wake up the phone unnecessarily, I think)
I think the radios -gps/voice/3g/4g - is what causes unnecessary wakelocks on stock rom/kernel - as I get virtually no, nada, zip, zilch, zero sleeping drain in airplane mode.
If your battery drains 1%+ an hour just sleeping, it can add up significantly. Even when things are turned off, they still sometimes cause wakelocks. Take NFC for example, I just read in a forum post that it was causing wakelocks even when turned off.
Question
Do you guys think since in AMOLED displays the black color is essentially the pixels being turned off, having a black wallpaper uses less battery? because each time I check my battery usage I see that my display is always on top, and I have this theory can anyone confirm it or correct me if I'm wrong?
Hola
I looked around and didn't see any threads dedicated to this, so I hope it's not a duplicate.
After rooting and doing the ad-hoc wifi patch, the battery life is one of my few remaining complaints about the a100
Some of the reviews that I've read (for other devices that have received a stock ICS update) have mentioned noticeably improved battery life. I was wondering if anybody who's tried out any of the leaked updates has noticed an improvement and if so, you wouldn't mind sharing some stats to give the rest of us an idea of what to expect.
I noticed an improvement in battery life by quite a bit, after upgrading to ICS, but as with a lot of things battery life is subjective. Spend all day gaming and your battery life will take a massive hammering. I don't game a lot on mine but I use it like a laptop and I guess I get a decent day out of it with full brightness and a fair bit of YouTube
There's so,e tweaks to the build.prop on ICS that add some helpings to the battery life, also if you're rooted you can use setCPU etc to lower the screen off CPU freq thus saving battery there
Sent from my A500 using xda premium
I haven't really noticed any huge difference in battery life when it comes to heavy usage. I get around 4 - 4.5 hours of gaming at medium low brightness. I think with the custom build prop I get more standby time and more battery life for light usage on wifi, however, I find the best way to get the most out of my battery is use airplane mode for gaming and readding.
I noticed battery management changes in general. It seems more efficient at conservation. It also shows you what apps are consuming your battery in settings now.
Thanks for the feedback. Now that I've read that the devs are working on a CM9 release, I'm totally willing to wait to see what goodness they have in store for us!
Android 4.2.1
CyanogenMod 10.1 Snapshot M1 (21/1/13)
Franco Kernel R364
I'm trying to maximize my battery time.
(Power mode BeastlyBattery 192MHz~1036MHz, Governor: Lazy, IO Scheduler: deadline, Screen of Max Frew: 384MHz)
I want to UV my CPU (and maybe IVA and GPU also, does it helps too?) to save some battery.
Should I just decrease the voltage a bit, use stability test app and keep going till there will be errors,
or I can just decrease like someone else on the web and then keep going..?
Can it do something to the device? (because Its just undervoltage..)
For how long I need to run the stability test?
I saw this topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599025
and he says:
"1. It has been tested that the 700Mhz frequency is prefereable over the 300Mhz one, due to the drops on frequency signal of the phone."
Anyone tested this?
Does UV degrades preformance?
What is SmartFlex?
Anything else I need to know about that?
Im gonna make this one quick, so my apologies if I don't address your questions directly.
Prior to my Galaxy Nexus, I had a T-Mobile SGSII. I too had the belief that undervolting/clocking would improve my battery life substantially. It seemed to work but then I was only getting the results that I wanted to get, and thats because I went to extremes to lowering my screen brightness to minimum and using my phone a fraction of what I used to.
With the help of others and trial and error, my major conclusion is that undervolting/clocking, though normal headset use will not improve your battery life by a landslide. Android is so well optimized to save you as much battery as it can. Sure there are things here in there that interrupt that optimization such as bugs or kernel issues but that something even undervolting/clocking will not be able to solve.
If you do go into undervolting/clocking your device, please keep in mind that the most you will probably get out of it is maybe 45 minutes to 1hr extension, but thats not display time.
What you can do to improve your battery life is turn off whatever sync services you don't use, lower your screen brightness ( the display is the major battery hog in the GN and SAMOLED devices), use dark wallpapers and dark themes if apps support it, use wifi, disable 3G when not in use. The radio you use can also potentially affect your battery life and signal quality.
Those are just a few suggestions, the rest is up to you.
Good luck!
P.S. Kernels also add variation to the longevity of your battery life. It's been a very long time since I touched CM10 so I'm not gonna go and defame that ROM but do try something else that possibly offers better battery life. If MODs are a MUST for you, then you will be faced with a lower battery life compared to stock based ROM's. It won't be an extreme difference but the difference will be there. If I may suggest a ROM, try this one. I can honestly say I can get up to 3-4 hours of display time on it with about a 12 hour standby.
I read a lot on the web that it does help to battery time.. :S
anyone?
You're not going to see much difference. Running the cpu at a lower clock speed just means it will take longer to complete the same operation so you'll use just as much battery.

And undervoltage?
Different overnor?
Undervolting will have minimal effect during actual use and a governor is based on specific user needs. One might save me battery while another works better for your usage. You need to actually mess with setting instead of just asking others what they use.
I was just wondering how lowering the phone's resolution works. Since they claim lowering the resolution will improve battery life, do you think it will also improve performance?
I've personally never felt the need of 2k resolution on a phone, so yeah. If anyone has any info on this, could you please share?
Performance will improve a bit, but battery savings probably won't be very noticeable.
Hi folks
Since I disabled the RAM boost option, my battery feels so much better!
Version 11.2.8.8 Indian
Im with 75% screen brightning
QHD + 120Hz
Wifi - ON
4G - ON
Bluetooth - ON (Connected to device for 1 hour)
And my SOT is 4 Hour, 9 Min on 50% battery now.
7 Hours since last charged.
Finally some better battery life ...
Hope ONEPLUS will fix this problem. So we dont have to tweak settings for better battery life
I don't think it needs a fix. It's simply utilizing more RAM to prioritize and that alone will speed up battery drain. The OP9 Pro is meant for speed. Performance vs battery life is a constant battle. Try 50 percent brightness when your inside. Also do you have developers mode enabled
Developer enabled, yes, why?
You can make a few other tweaks to increase battery life. The four scale buttons you see can be brought down to .5 as well to save

Animation affect battery?
Of course. Everything impacts the battery. The question is how much do you want to lower your viewing experience to save battery? That question can only be answered by the user.

That's going to make such a negligible impact on battery life lol. If you think that's helping a noticeable amount, you're kidding yourself
I never said it would make a huge impact. I'm just adding things in that people do to Maximize battery life. I personally do not throttle my performance. I enjoy it how it is and to fully charge takes less than 30 minutes
Wish I could say the same. RAM boost on or off I still average six hours of SOT
Every little thing can add up to a better battery experience...
Animation OFF will give you some plus in speed too. I keep them off for years. It's usselles for me.
