[Q] Have I done it correctly? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

(If it's tl:dr, then just scroll to the bottom of the post)
Hi guys, first thread here
I think that I've done everything correctly in terms of rooting and flashing on my DHD, but I just want to be sure.
I'm in the UK, and currently on Orange, so I think I might have the wrong radio. However it's worth noting that the phone was unlocked.
Okay, first thing that I did was to check what firmware I was running. Fortunately, I was running 1.32 and not 1.72
Then I used visionary+ and temp rooted, then permrooted. Then using terminal emulator, entering 'su' produced '#' on the next line. All good so far.
Then, the next step is to radio off and eng off right? So I downloaded the radio s-off easy tool and used that. Simples. Same with the Eng off tool. There was an option to tick if you have radio off-ed your phone, and I ticked that, but for some reason, Eng off didn't work. In the tool in windows it kept going but the progress bar 'froze'. So I unticked the 'I have radio s off' box and it installed eng off fine.
I then flashed Andriod revolution 2.0.15 on there using clockwork recovery mod. I backed up my sd card etc, but didn't perform any sort of wipe. I didn't even tick the 'wipe data + cache' box. It seemed to boot okay, and worked fine.
I then flashed a radio file onto the phone (26.04.02.17 M2) and flashed Leedroid 2.0 on there, this time wiping data+cache. I then decided to go back to Android revolution, and re-flashed that, again wiping data+cache.
The weird thing is, I've seen very little to no improvement to my phone. Battery, signal, speed etc is all the same (apart from when I overclock it obviously).
This is what it says on my phone:
Android version:
2.2.1
Baseband version:
12.28e.60.140fU_26.04.02.17_M2
Kernel Version:
2.6.32.29_Buzz_sense_1.3.1_OCUV
[email protected] #11
Wed 23 Deb 15:58:37 GMT 2011
Build Number
1.72.405.3 CL296490 release-keys
Software number:
Android Revolution HD/4G 2.0.15 by Mike1986
Browser version:
WebKit 3.1
However, this is what it said when I go into bootloader and system information:
SN-HT0CLRX08532
LCD-AUO
Touch Panel-SYN3K2_020b
Commit-7eadc656
OS ver. -1.32.405.6
IMEI
CID-HTC_001
Ram 768mb
emmc sandisk 2223mb 4554751sectors
The bit that worries me mainly is the CID because according to the guide on this site, it should say:
CID-11111111
Does it sound like I've done it properly? The only reason I ask is that I haven't noticed much difference in the new roms from the standard HTC Rom
Thanks everyone
Summary:
Not sure if I've flashed phone + radio properly, so posted my stats here to be sure.

Yeah ur good dude i suggest if u overclock ull notice a great dif dl advanced task killer and power tutor and ull save a ton of bat.

Top post, I'm going to quote this whenever possible

Thanks for the responses guys
Yeah, I don't use a task killer
I just restart my phone once a day, seems to do the job. But I'm just concerned as apart from being able to overclock (and having done so) I haven't noticed any difference at all, no difference in performance, battery etc. Also, my signal and particularly internet speed appear to have gotten worse, could that be a radio problem? To be honest, I'm not in an area of amazing signal.
Thanks guys

I suppose it depends how you use it: if you use it heavily throughout the day then it's still going to require a recharge every night anyway. I have seen on some forums that people are using LeeDroid's kernel with the Revolution ROM as it gives better battery life apparently. Is there not a newer kernel for Revolution you can try? December is quite a bit ago, I'd be surprised if they hadn't made some changes since then.

It lasts barely over 24 hours with minimal use. Maybe around 10 mins of games and 20 mins of calls. It's the same with Leedroid and Android Revolution, JuiceDefender doesn't help either.
And my rubbish signal :\

The Release Candidate versions have been around for a while, and they've been running on the Desire Z too.
Sorry I don't understand your request, but I recommend you check out the linked posting, i.e. the "proper" thread on the G2 forums.
Will check there. I just wondered about how to install that special patch of brokenworm.
Tried now to install the first part of CM6.1, but already failed at the nandroid backup. I installed ROM Manager, then installed there the Clockwork Recovery and rebooted into yet. But there I failed, it doesn't seem to be available in the recovery part
I also had only the choice between HTC G2 for ClockworkMod Recovery.
Ok found the issue, was missing S-OFF. Fixed it with this guide, section b) :

That's a problem with Clockwork Recovery at the moment, it's not a problem with the ROM. So it will happen with any ROM when you have Clockwork installed (it happens to me, and I have the stock ROM with Clockwork). Hopefully the developer will fix it soon.

Do I need to root and S-OFF after the flash?
Does anyone know a good backup programm for my contacts?

You need to root and s-off. A good back up program would be your gmail account .
After a days use:
GPS seems to be working amazingly fast on this version
Battery life is also looking good. 77% after 8 hours,
60% after 12 hours. Lots of texts, few phone calls, 30mins internet use, few hours of listening to MP3's...seems to use no power at all in standby as well
Currently using SetCPU with standard kernel, on-demand governor:
Min: 245 Mhz
Max: 1.1GHz
Not using a profile like 245/245 when screen off which also seems to improve battery life as mentioned in other threads.
Signal strength has been much more stable (used to get a frequent drops/low signal/missed sms etc)
Thanks! Officially a die hard cm fan
Woot woot. So far, other than the standard Cyanogen features, I've noted the phone is substantially smoother than the stock HTC Sense (and even Villision's modified G2 ROM), the battery life is ostensibly through the roof (maybe it's not updating properly, but it's been idle for a few hours now and I've literally not lost a single percent of battery life :|), and in general it just feels much nicer.
That said, my SD card refuses to work, *sigh*.
UPDATE - my battery life just dropped to 99%. After 3 hours off the charger, with wifi and automatic updates on. Crazy.
Just a small question from a newbie
I want to try this cyanogen on my DZ but first... :
- Actually my phone is S-off + root + o/c kernel @ 1.4Ghz... I will do a nAndroid backup before flashing with Cyanogen, but after if for some reason I'm not happy with Cyanogen and a made a nAndroid restore... Will it restore also s-off / root and 1.4Ghz kernel on my stock rom ?
- Flashing with Cyanogen does erase any data on the SDcard ?
- Can I apply the 1.4Ghz kernel of this thread on the cyanogenmod ?
Thanks for your help

If you restore from nand phone will be as you left it. flashing wont wipe your sd card & cyanogenmod comes with overclockable kernel as standard...just use setCPU
hope this helps.

Helped a lot, thanks
I recommend you guys use the CM thread over in the G2 forum, there are a ton more people in that thread who you can share experiences with and ask for advice etc.
Agreed. I come from a Nexus One (amongst others), so anyone can ask me questions via PM or here if they need to. I'm also in the g2 section, as it's a TON busier than over here, lol. You'll find most information you need with just about everything over there.
first time trying cyanogen... kina traumatized with flashing coz i migrated from using a galaxy s...
but this rom is GREAT! super smooth, and super snappy. i'll be doing a test run with the batt tomorrow. i can usually get it to last 16 hours with a fair amount of browsing, 2-3 hours use with bluetooth stereo, and a average calls and sms. so i'm hoping this rom can squeeze out more batt life.

[Q] irc, myn's rls5, toastmod kernal.....wth is wrong

Ok since this the third time typing this here is the condensed version. Running myns rls5 ontop of toastmod kernel listed on same page. Initial flash went ok minus the Flickr screen, distortion lines laterally, horrendous battery life, weird boot process...osmonitor I had to install due to interference with the OS. Myns crashed a lot with in first flash. Also some one dumb down how to use an irc app cuz I'm also lost....also what IM service can I get hold of u guys on cuz I hate forums.... too impatient
Ok no help? Not even some direction for irc where I can get some real help? Well just flashed a diff kernel thanks for the help guys. The Droid community has been a very unhelpful one compared to iPhone....
(irc help would be awesome still since I now have some help with main issue- I enter all the correct info into the app but it shows nothin. I've tried several to no avail. I appreciate the help) second I've ran into more pretentious ppl in these forums for Android then others no offense to the good guys but just my exp. It was brash to say that in this post tho. Thank you guys again for the ones willing.
That's because even the biggest idiot can work an iphone.

Patience dude. I didn't catch it, but what exact kernel are you using, net has a lot of em, the one in the OP of myn's thread you mean? What recovery(and version of that recovery, some versions of clockwork floating around that have some bugs i think) did you use to flash the rom? what radio version and pri version do you currently have installed? Which ROM were you coming from, and did you do a full wipe(data, cache, davlik cache) before flashing it? I have never experienced anything like you are describing whilst using Myn's, his ROMs have been solid. Give a little more info and surely we can help you get running smoothly again.
thanks for the reply heres the details...myn's rls5, net toast havs more, ra_superson
Sincerely thanks for your reply. Typing this on my evo as my screen tears on and off. Running ra_supersonic(newest ver.) With Myns rls5 on net havs more smartass as listed on page. Updated to current radio and pri as listed on his post. Only dalvik and cache wiped not data. Flashed
Hulu and data governor hacks...CPU is only overlooked to 1190 in smartass and can't go any higher. This was my first root and flash so came from stock 2.2 on 3.30 ver. Have noticed avg using temp is around 103 off charger, cameras broke, my CPU in system panel says I'm running 100% continuously. Did a fast reboot , norm reboot, and still doin it. I had diminished battery life from the get go, I understand battery life per clockspeed relation but have underclocked profile to try to assist, which only cause frustration when coming back from lock screen and its still tryin to switch profile. Lagged the phone nearly locked out several times cuz it couldn't keep up with my fingers.0003 hw....I think that's it. Thank you again
Looks like we're running nearly the same setup, minus my ra_supersonic 2.2.1 recovery. I have attempted the stock kernel furnished in the Rom zip but since it didn't offer overclock I switched to net havs more smartass. I do the dalvik and cache wipe each time.

Not trying to be a smart ass but do you realize that by insulting us will not get you any help? Rhetorical question
From reading what you jus stated the obvious problem is you did not do a FULL WIPE as you should do when flashing between roms.
Also next time please be patient as those like myself who browse through this section to help impatient ppl like your self, do actually have a life outside of xda. Its been a big snow storm in the southeast so most like myself included are outside enjoying the snow!
DO A FULL WIPE THEN REPORT BACK!
Gonna ignore the soap box chatter...
Obviously know I didn't do full wipe.....just gonna wait for other poster
gotta do a full wipe if you are switching between roms

Sorry you feel that way but since i have had the hero, on every thread about a rom says wipe all! This must be a joke for someone as rude as yourself to come on here and disrespect those who are trying to help.
Next time you decide to flash a rom remember to do a full wipe because inside the data partition is files for the particular rom, if you dont wipe, the new files will just over lay but not delete the old one. This will cause conflicting issues within the files as the phone tries to do both at the same time.
Screen tearing and the "jigglies" as I like to call it have always come from kernels - in my experience. And just because someone might have the same set up as you, the way it affects your phone ccan be quite different as you are running different apps, different settings, etc.
First thing I would do if I were you is to freeze any kernel govenor you are using - no setcpu, no secreen off profile, no set on boot, no os monitor govenor, no nothing like that. You don't want want any of that going on when you flash a new rom or kernel.
I know you don't want to do a full data wipe so let's see if we cna get you going without that. I used to HATE doing data wipes, I don't mind so much now because I've learned that trobule shooting can frequently take longer than just doing a data wipe.
I would say #1 make sure you are using AMON RA. Power button-reboot-recovery. Wipe cache at least twice, wipe dalvik at least twice. Now JUST flash the rom (you've already said your radios are updated so you wont have a problem with this). Let the phone boot up and give it time to settle in. You wont have any screan tearing. Now you're running a completely stock Myn's rls5 rom. Check some stuff out, make sure your basic settings are good, make sure your 4g is not scanning, etc.
Make a nandroid of this and keep it.
Now start making changes if you'd like. Flash a different font, flash a different kernel, etc. But leave all the governors OFF until you have a kernel that you KNOW will run ok on your phone. For example - I can run 2 of ziggy's kernels but the others don't work for me. I can run a few of net's kernels, but many don't work for me.
So my basic suggestion is to make sure you get a stable, stock Myn's rls5 on your phone before you mod it. If you can't get that, then yes - you might want to wipe data. Doing a batch backup in Titanium is really easy and it makes restoring very easy as well. It's our own customizing that is time consuming because we are all probably very picky (and proud!) of our beautiful phones.
Thanks for the helpful info from ALL that posted. I understand the risk of the non entire wipe, nandroid is safe of original stock Rom but not of new one. After tinkering with setcpu I've gotten more consistent stability. I know I will reflash with an entire data wipe here soon to see results. Running ra_supersonic 2.2.1 recovery.
I've made list of check point when I test some new Roms and kernels. I have some more question on backing up user info from backed up apps but Im sure ill find it on here.
Now that my system is stable for the time being, some one mind help me setup irc? And also has anyone issues with camera breaking with this Rom or kernel? I should wait to wipe entirely to see if it fixes, but I'd rather not waste my time with this Rom or kernel if the camera won't work. Love everything else about this Rom, need to learn more about the kernel to praise it. Ra_supersonic 2.2.1 recovery i like also.

You're welcome. I am late at getting back to this post, but yea. Definitely. As everyone else has suggested, you have to do a full wipe when changing ROMS. Only time you could get away with just wiping davlik cache and cache is when upgrading the same rom ( like from rls 3 to rls 4, and rls to rls 5), but even then, it doesn't always work. Full wipe is always recommended. I would also recommend downloading your apps one at a time from the market, and adding your mods one at a time, make sure everything is stable after each flash. Good luck.

If your phone is the newer hardware (late 003 or 004), you can only use the stock kernel, or a kernel based off stock for the camera to work. That would be htc #15. I believe Net's 4.3 kernels are based off of that. I am also pretty sure that Net explains that in his kernel thread in the development section.
Thanks guys did the full wipe and reflashed, working ok except SD file permissions are screwed up now. I go to test camera and it says insufficient file permissions when I take a pic. Okay, this process will 100% work. It's the one I've been using since my lowly mytouch slide oh so many months ago.
*before you do this, make sure you have backups of your nandroid and your rsa keys. I'll edit post and give you links on how to back up your rsa keys*
RSA Key back-up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887900 ...since you're rooted you can go straight to the part where it says "if you're rooted do this.."
1. First you need to fix the sd card. Create a folder on your computer desktop and call it "my sd card". Plug your phone into the computer and select "disk drive". Next you're going to copy EVERYTHING from the sd card and place it in the folder on the desktop (and dude I mean everything! AS IS, DON'T CHANGE ANY NAMES). Then, you're going to unhook your phone, go to settings>sd and phone storage. Then you're going to format your sd card. Yes, do it, but make sure you have EVERYTHING backed up first. After that's done, plug your phone back in, select disk drive and copy everything from your "my sd card" folder on your computer and put it back onto your sd card.
*phew*
Okay now that the sd problem is fixed, here's how you fix the rest. You see, when you upgrade your PRI to 1.90 and your radio, etc etc you gotta update the kernel to a version that's 1.90 supported. I'll edit post and post a link to where you can find one OR you can just use the kernel that's included with myn's rom because it WILL WORK. *edit* the kernel I'm using has been taken down because of the witch hunt against SBC kernels. So for now, just stick with stock. It works just fine.
Anyway.
Steps to getting myn working perfectly.
*before starting, re-download myn rls5 in case the screen flickering was caused by a corrupted download*
1. Download Titanium Back-up from the market. Back up all the apps you want to keep (basically, anything you downloaded from the market as you'll get facebook, sense widgets, etc back). You can do this while you re-download the rom.
2. Make a nandroid back-up in case something goes seriously wrong. A rom that flickers your screen is better than a brick.
3. Once that back-up is done, reboot into recovery. Once there, you're going to WIPE EVERYTHING. Full data, cache and dalvik wipe. Yes, do it. There is no other option.
3. Flash myn's rom. Let it go all the way through. Do NOT flash a new kernel until you've found one that's 3.70 compatible and works with PRI 1.90. Myn rls5 is designed to work with the newest updates (which means a #15 kernel, like the one that came stock).
4. Reboot. If the screen is still flickering, then at this point it's a hardware problem. Flash back to stock, unroot and go get a new one. If it works fine, re-download titanium back-up from the market and restore all your apps. From there it's just putting your widgets back on your home screen.
From here, you can search the forums for a kernel that works with the newest updates. If you read them, they'll tell you what they're compatible with. Remember do NOT use an AOSP kernel with a SENSE rom, that's just spells IDIOCY. Until you find a kernel that works, stick with the one that came with the rom because everyone knows that one works.
I hope this helps. As for the IRC chat, not all the experts are on all the time. If no one is online that can help when you get one, try getting a few hours earlier or a few hours later.

[Q] HTC Desire A8181 - Need to restore to Factory Defaults

Hi all,
Firstly, I would like to say thanks to all of the devs providing such a wide array of optional extras, rooting, themes, ROM's etc.
Recently, I purchased HTC Desire from portagadgets - $455.00 AUD delivered/unlocked. I am VERY happy with the purchase! One VERY annoying thing that is preloaded on my phone is some muslim praying app called Al-Moazin, iQuran, Arabic keyboard. When I first started the phone the only languages available were English Arabic and some other. Thank god they've included at least one English! At first, I thought, ah well, I can live with this, but, it was very embarrassing when the phone started that praying app by itself at work (even that the phone was on vibrate only). Boy, was that stupid or what. Then I started having a look around and found this forum.
Now, I am one of the people that respects forum rules and have been forum member of Doom9 for almost 10 years
So far I have learned that in order for me to remove these apps, I will have to "root" my phone and /or reload ROM, right?
I use Linux MiNT 10 and Windows 7. I would prefer to use Linux, but if Windows is needed to perform any of the tasks, that would not be a problem.
Unrevoked seems to be the way to go as far as I can tell.
All I want to do is to restore the phone to factory defaults without "those" apps. I like the Sense UI and I would like to keep it default a for now. As soon as the 2.3 becomes available I will update.
Does that mean the I would need to "root" the phone or download RUU official for HTC Desire or what?
Here are the phone details:
Android Version:
2.2
Baseband Version:
32.49.00.U_5.11.05.27
Kernel Version:
2.6.32.15-gd96f2c0
htc-kernel and18-2 #1
Build Number:
2.32.466.1 CL283905 release-keys
Software Number:
2.32.466.1
Also, the market app was NOT preloaded on my phone as well, that's weird, right? I have tried to do factory reset, but that did not solve the problem at all.
I would VERY much appreciate if someone would point me out in the right direction so I can enjoy my newly purchased phone. Thanking you for your input in advance. Waiting for further instructions
Lulz, New age conversion much....
anyway enough with the racisim. Yeah easiest to just flash back to stock ROM. Im in the same boat as you except i only use linux, gotta send in warranty claim to telstra (telescum) and my phone is rooted with unr3voked with clockwork recovery mod.
L> for program i can flash a rom on ubuntu linux
Ps: Yeah there are tons of places to get the stock rom for australia brb ill get one now
Hi
I am in the same boat, but with a Desire S. Has all this crap I can not seem to remove so would like to reinstall the stock rom?
I come from a nokia user and it was as simple as using the nokia software updater to update the phone. Is HTC similar?
Check this thread for bringing phone to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880268
It's weird, though, can't you just uninstall the app ? Or just factory reset the phone from the menu.
thanks for the link, ill have a read
for me, the phone had additional apps installed & this was noted by the person I got it from. As this is my first smart phone I am cautious that there maybe something installed which should not be. eg steal my details etc
So would like to wipe and start again knowing its a clean install
Then definitely do the procedure which involves the installation of a stock ROM and probably it would be a good idea to format the SD card. Nothing fancy just reformat with the phone.
OK, after some further reading I have managed to root my HTC Desire, partitioned my SD card and running SuperDooperAwesomeROM v0.3. Unfortunately, as a "newbie" here, cannot post in the dev forum so here I am. Waiting for the latest v0.4 and changelog. SDAROM is something that I am very interested in or any other stock, clean GB with Sense, minimal customization and just needed apps. If anyone has any suggestions, feel free
No WiFi issues with SDAROM at all, but I had HTC sense crashing unexpectedly on couple of occasions. Also, the cam crashed 3 times as well. Phone just restarts by itself. Smooth operation, unfortunately not stable. Hope the next version will be a bit better.
Cheers,
Ivan K.
CyanogenMod7,,,, slick, stable, and no annoying "extracirricular" audios.
Glad you had no problems flashing; Usually... but a lot of folks here are very knowledgable...
The "random" audios you heard, were "come to prayer" audios. Undoubtedly synced with your time zone.

Evo keeps boot looping...Need a little help

This boot looping issue is not like the normal ones (I have googled,as well as checked here...I am a noob, but know how to search)
I am running CWM v3.0.0.5
Energy ROM
And Aggressive Freedom (Was running More freedom prior, but still the same issue occured)
It does not matter which rom i am running ( have tried about 5 now)...after a few days my phone will lock up no matter what i am doing and then reboot, except it gets stuck in a boot loop...If I do a battery pull and fire it back up...no problem it boots up like nothing ever happened...and after a few days it will do it again so on and so forth. This has not always happened, it started occurring around 3 months ago. Can anyone help me as to rectify this issue?
Also when i flash a new rom i do a factory wipe/reset,run gruesome format all 3 times, clear cache,as well as dalvik cache..and THEN i will flash the rom over.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. its not a GIANT pain but it just wants to happen at odd times which sucks lol
Kernel
Have you tried installing a different kernel trough Recovery?
Edit: Sorry, didn't read your post carefully enough. Have you tried a stock kernel?
No i have not tried a stock kernel. Figured with aggressive/more freedom it would be a little more lenient on the battery life.
Look in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=708502
Since I don't own an EVO, I'm not sure if this is a good one. Try it at your own risk.
Do a search in the development section for a stock kernel also maybe download set CPU to try one of the governors sounds like phone does not like over clocking they all run a little different.

Thats the problem i was having also,my phone could'nt be overclocked over 113600 MHz or it would start locking up and giving me random reboots, try dropping your level.Ondemand profile works great with my phone, others seem to give me problems.
busted GPS receiver
My wife's Evo did the same thing and we spent a total of 6 hours at the [carrier] store trying to get them to replace it. The store is cement and cinder blocks so there is no GPS signal inside. The phone easily passes their "complete" diagnostic.
Finally, I became irate and pleaded the store manager to get in my car with me. Before we got out of the parking lot, the phone began rebooting.
Turns out, their "complete" diagnostic doesn't test the GPS receiver in any way. He knew this, but I had to point it out to him.
My phone is underclocked with the kernel i am running UNLESS the roms i use some how over clock them, SetCPU does not work for me. And my GPS is always turned off because i try to conserve the battery life.
I will go ahead and see if i run the stock kernel...or one that comes with the rom instead of using Aggressive or More freedom kernel and see how that one fairs out.
htc evo boot loop
i was using my htc evo fine today, it was on 2.3 ota when i rooted it with revolution, it was half way flashed to boost, it already had the NV items and the Nam files, on the front said boost mobile, after i rooted i put a Speedy Shift rom, to make it have the internet pass through like the shift, so today i decided to finish flashing it to boost, after i put the nv and nam files again, i restated the phone, and from there it just keep doin a endless reboot, i could only go in the hboot, i tryed the pc36img, Amon ra, Ruu, and rerooting with revolution but it doesnt read the phone on fastboot, any help?

What real advantages are there in changing ROM from stock to something else?

Hi guys,
I own a Motorola Defy currently running on Froyo 2.2.
I've been reading the guide threads on installing a custom ROM and I am interested in trying it out.
I am currently focused on CM7.
However, I just want to confirm that going through this process is going be advantageous. My current stock Froyo installation is stable but can sometimes be a bit slow. Would CM7 (running Gingerbread) be a smoother ROM overall? Also would I be able to get better battery life, or overclock my CPU to a higher clock speed? Are there other advantages?
Apologies if this question has been asked before. I tried searching but could not find any direct information on why I should change from stock.
If u just want a faster and a bit smoother rom just install 2nd init to overclock yr cpu. If you are looking for speed and performance then CM7 and lastly Miui for beauty and customization. U can have a different theme for your stausbar, sms etc. And if you don't like the iphone style launcher of miui then u can always install a different launcher In terms of battery life it depends but custom roms usually have less battery life from what i have seen. Hope this helps

i dont think anyone can give you any reason why YOU should change your ROM, but they can give you reasons why they changed theirs... its all a matter of preference, if you want a stable and reliable phone with everything working fine then you can stick with stock rom (or is it really reliable?? debatable hehe)
or you can go for ROMS that have beautiful interfaces, good battery life, lots of functions, fast and smooth... there are lots of options, its best you try it out yourself, i personally prefer CM7.1 while a friend of mine loves CMIUI...
I think just rooting the phone by itself will give you quite a few advantages, personally I didn't see much difference in at first battery life by using CM7, 7.1, 7.2....but those give a good bit more freedom, and if you want to you can turn your phone into a speed demon (the stock defy....is....not...) or a battery sipper that lasts for a while.
It's mostly just the freedom.
I root and use custom ROMs because I like to tinker it's the same reason I use Linux more than windows. I like to be able to change things and yes sometimes I break things but then I get to learn how to fix them.

Thanks for the responses.
Would the CM7 jump from Froyo to Gingerbread show a significant improvement?

Yes.
I use MIUI. Exactly WajkUI.
Faster and all ways better than stock ROM.
CM 7 is good also but I think it has an old and boring user interface.
If you're installing a Custom ROM it is not only that you get Gingerbread (this is actually the smaller thing), you get a different user experience, a fresh design (no Motoblur anymore), more customizations and tweaks.
My favorite in terms of stability, smoothness and speed was Galnet MIUI (before I switched to CM9 but that's not really final...), imho MIUI looks better, has nice built in apps and an awesome theme support (you can customize everything like the status bar, boot animation, font, lockscreen...). CM7 was a tiny bit less stable for me, it looks more like plain stock Gingerbread and you have some additional advanced settings.

Yes of course
I tried it myself and CM 7.1 is more stable
Thanks all for your help.
I think I will indeed go ahead and try a custom ROM.
I notice MIUI also seems to have a following. Can anyone point me to the relevant ROM forum link? I can't seem to find it in the Android Development Forum. :-/
I intend to use the instructions shown in the following link in order to flash a new ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054447
Am I right in assuming that steps 1 to 9 must be universal to all Defy's and that step 10 is where you flash the ROM of your choice?
There are indeed a few different miui variations that often different mods and add-ons. U can try the official english builds with no tweaks and mods just translated to english at miuiandroid.com or other english variation at miui.us or one with awesome mods and tweaks that i recommend will be wajkiui ics or ics miui dsj from the forums or galnetmiui from galnetmiui.co.uk.
Yes the steps are universal but a bit outdated.
U can't download 2ndinit from market anymore just get latest apk from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212
Make sure you're on froyo if not you won't be able to downgrade or use any custom roms as they use froyo as base.
Also have your files ready on your sd card before you start this.
Steps
1. Backup your apps using titanium backup root or mybackup root additional you can backup your contacts and messages by selecting data in mybackup root
2.Download superoneclick from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682. Use the 2.11 version easiest and quickest to root froyo
3.Connect your phone to PC. Right click superoneclick -> open as admin
4.Wait till it says waiting for device then go to your phone in settings->Applications->Development check usb debugging is on
5.After your phone is rooted. Uncheck usb debugging and restart your mobile.
5.Now switch your phone on again and check usb debugging is on then download 2nd init from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212 and install the 2nd init recovery. It will ask the superuser permission Accept it. If the led light is green then 2ndinit was successfully installed.
6. Now Uncheck the USB debugging from Settings->Applications->Development and restart the phone now.
7.It will go in to bootmenu select 2nd init as default boot. Using the volume rocker to navigate and power button to select
8.Go back and click recovery -> Custom recovery ->* Wipe data/factory and Wipe cache and also go to advance and clear dalvik cache -> Install zip file from sd card(select the cm7 zip, repeat with the gapps zip) If it's miui no need to flash gapps
12. Reboot. Go to app drawer and start up the defy baseband switcher. select the appropriate baseband to achieve optimal reception.
Thanks to stewi21 for the original guide. If u need more help pm me or ask on the forums.
Happy Modding
If you are a us tmobile user, you almost certainly need wifi calling as the service stinks in closed spaces. So using a custom rom based on other than us froyo will eliminate that option...come on guys get it fixed please!
Thanks Kayant for the modified instructions. Many thanks also to others for the help.
So I went ahead and installed CM7. I figured I'll try the rest after having done a basic install to begin with.
It's pretty much the default Gingerbread experience I see. Quite smooth. A little disappointed that standard google apps like Gmail and Maps were not included but I soon settled this through the market.
Funny thing but Titanium Backup has seemingly not backed up some software like a paid version of Quick Office and Math Workout. Strange to me.
Battery life seems not much changed from the previous stock Froyo however I probably should give it a few days to stabilize.

Sure that you have selected the paid apps when you backupped them with Titanium? I never had such issues.
Battery life: Have you already recalibrated the battery after installing CM7.1? Af not, after installing a new ROM simply use the app "battery calibration" from the market to improve battery life.
Ok so I'm not experiencing good battery life.
I tried recalibrating but the improvements seem negligible if any.
I'm getting about 10 hours on a full charge with moderate use.
I tried changing the CPU governor in the boot menu. I switched from on-demand to smartass, and now to powersave. Oddly enough powersave seems to be worse than smartass. With smartass it seemed the battery drain was slower, but still not significantly so.
I would like the phone to comfortably last at least 12 hours wth moderate use. Moderate being about 8 mins of calls per hour on average.
I guess it I ought to downclock the CPU from the default 1000MHz to the original 800MHz. But I don't understand the settings properly. I see numbers 300, 600, and 1000, but what do these mean? Can I just simply change 1000 to 800 to reduce the upperbound frequency, or is there more that I should do?
The main thing I see as an advantage is speed. My phone is 3x faster now that I have CM7
I just installed miui and im stuck... where is the app drawer???? Am i blind??
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
There's no appdrawer. Miui's look a like IPhone.
Sent from my MB526 using xda premium
Ok, well im still stuck i cant get my network connection...im with telus on hspa
I see that for cm7 i can select a baseband with a well done app. It works very well so i am happy to see that i am still able to get a network connection somehow but i would prefer to use miui and it does not seem to find anything like if i did not get antenna conections with the rom. I tried miui on; miuiandroid.com 1.12.30 and an optimized version from a user on xda on another tread, after that i tried miui.us on version 1.12.23 and 1.12.30 and it always gives me the same exact result where i dont get any connection.
Since i was not able to get my connections i tried cm7 and i am facing another problem, i cant instal google. i went on filecrop and searched gogleapps and found 2 results, one apk that does not work and one zip file. I try installing googleapps.zip right after installing cm7.zip (the version from the cm defy link on the official site) and it just loops between the android skating and the start sceen for selecting wich language or a choice of start wizard and another one that i dont remember. Even if i reboot i get the same problem and if i try installing the rom without googleapps.zip all works great but i cant get google apps of course so i am shure it is when i instal the google.zip. So now what can i do?? Is there a super version of the rom with google apps already installed???
update; ok, ive got cm7 up and working, now to get that network connection on miui!!!!
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
baseband switcher is built into CM7/9...
it can be installed on MIUI to allow regular reception ^^
I wub MIUI...
PS - Why install custom ROM? So, your not stock! <<= never look back
