Does anyone know why google maps always runs in the background.
I have already turned off gps and it still continues to run even after I kill it
It may be in memory but it's very unlikely that it's actually running or using any processing power.
What makes u think that it's still running?

Go to manage applications and force stop. That will stop it until you open the app again.
actually you are better off just using manage apps then atk but I won't start that continuing argument.
When I force stop the app in manage apps it seems to have another app that is turning it back on.
As for the argument over atk. I agree however it just seems easier for me to open atk and kill a group of apps that have started as opposed to going into manage apps and closing them separately. Just a preference I suppose. Neither is really better than the other I guess
Edit: maybe what you said is true. When I use atk to kill maps it seems to turn back on. When I use manage apps it has not turned back on by itself yet. I will keep you posted. And thank you for the suggestion. Greatly appreciated
No problem, glad I could help
Download and run the "Autostarts" program. It will allow you to disable maps (and other apps) from starting when you phone first boots. A lot of apps also are triggered by other events such as "Data state changed".
If you used the app it will show up in the battery usage until you reboot.
Check out os monitor in the market. That'll tell you what's really running. You can sort by load.

It works on the sgs, tested it. Rename the file to Vending.apk and push it to the /system/app folder.

Dont like the new market. The green **** (yes.) takes half of the screen space on a 800x480 device that's just dumb. Prolly pushed by publishers in the "featured" who pay money to get there or something.
Descriptions are halved because this green stuff takes all the space. comments, same. List, same.
My wife and I both have a GN2. Mine is running MyRom and she is completely stock (no root or anything).
She has a problem with the lock screen. Sometimes it will try to display in horizontal mode when the phone is being held in portrait orientation. This causes the lock screen pattern to be cut off.
I have never had this happen on my phone but she had to get her phone replaced (different reason) and it did it on both phones. She has to restart her phone to be able to unlock it.
I tried to mock up what it is doing but my artistic skill is lacking...

I wish I could screen shot because I've experienced the same. But I still just swipe up to unlock and it works just fine. You know how on nexus services the jelly bean clock where the hours and minutes are a different font abs one is bold over another is a description of how the display looks

Check her rotation settings, smart rotation and all. Im sure u already did that and it made no difference but its always the first thing to do.
From my experience whenever thst happens its because of excessive background apps are open killing the processor. Does she kill apps at all? Restarts the phone from time to time? Tell her to kill apps instead of backing out, hold the home button and the right buttin should kill the background apps and thr left bitton will take u to the ram and frees that up by clicking another button.
You can also download advanced mobile care on the phones and it has an option to kill apps when the screen wakes up, slight delay before input, bit it kills background and app processes. Good luck and report bavk

Since about a week the battery life of my one X has become terrible. According to the battery usage screen, google maps seems to be draining all the juice. Im not actually using gm though, so something must be going on in the background.

Thanks in advance!

And how do I do that? I can close the process, but it will automatically go back on. Disabling the app itself is not something I know how to do and not really something I would like to do either.
Perhaps one other thing of importance: when I open maps (or now) it says location services are turned off, while they are not.

disable from settings app manager OR
get greenify from playstore and just greenify it
problem solved :good:
Also, where do you live at? Might be your not connected to the right sattelites for your region. You could go to play store and download faster fix and make sure your phone is reading off the right satellites.
Hey XDA,
I've been getting this sns_async_ev wakelock and it is keeping my tablet awake, and never allowing it to enter deep sleep. I've been looking at some threads about it, but no one seemed to have a definite answer to eliminate this wakelock. I have absolutely no social networks by the way, and anything Google related has been frozen, except the Play Store and Gmail. Here are some screenshots of the BBS.

I have, but it hasn't told me what app or process has been causing it. The wakelock count goes up at 20/s and it never stops. I've uninstalled every app I have installed and I've wiped the tablet, but it still happens. I have no idea why and it's really getting on my nerves now.

Do you use Greenify?
Yes, I've looked at every possible thread fast is shared to this topic, and there still hasn't been any definite answers. I don't use Greenify, should I?
Recently it seems that some badly written apps are trying to use bluetooth for beacons and are killing my battery in the process. In the past I found that Gasbuddy was the culprit and could work around the problem by killing it. Now it's happening again, The apps aren't showing up in the battery display but bluetooth keeps popping up as the second largest user of battery. For example, right now my phone has been off the charger for 3 hours and bluetooth is listing 32 minutes of CPU time and 1 Hour 19 Minutes of wakelocks. It never used to even show up on the list.
What tool can I use on a non-rooted phone to identify the app that is hammering bluetooth and causing that kind of usage.
Thanks for the advice,
I don't claim to know best non root or even best rooted rooted solution but I the short time I glanced at Google Play, this one caught my attention: no permissions or ads.

Attached is highest app regarding battery concerns. The Windows drop down but only option given is to uninstall. If there's an auto starts app that doesn't require root, that may be an alternative to add more control to these apps of concern.
I usually just use the Recents/Active applications to see what's active but you're right, there's activity hiding from this monitor. Only some are neglecting permissions.
Gee, I thought someone had said no ads in their review? Adaway adware scan didn't reflect this as a concern. Any doubt why I love root?

I don't know how well it works for non root phones but greenify now has an auto hibernation mode for non root users.

@poit
While looking for an Adaway alternative for systemless root, I came upon an app which produced a link for permissions app and ad blocker; both have no root requirements.
https://m.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/3vxa3b/managing_app_permissions_and_systemwide_ad_on/
You may have to search for the ad blocker but the permissions app is on XDA

I wouldn't recommend the auto installer unless temporarily enabling it for automated long process. I've used these rooted permissions apps but this one is very simple in approach although I had to ignore a lot of middle risk apps that I trust.
I installed both apps and scanned with no concerns. I'm liking the results so far.
