[Q] Recovery, Kernal, Modem Instruction Request - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good evening all. A friend gave me an HTC Incredible recently. My current carrier is AT&T however I find myself nearly completely fed up with CrApple. I would like to try out the HTC. I need instruction on how to recover, kernal, modem, or even flash an AT&T modem to it. Do you happen to know of an easy source that details the explanation(s) that I am looking for? Thank you, in advance, for your help tonight. -Sarah

Verizon phones can not work on AT&T's network. They send and receive data in different ways (Verizon = CDMA, AT&T = GSM). Not sure if you said you're staying with AT&T or not, but just putting that out there.

Thank you for your reply. I am considering switching networks. I'm just trying to bypass the initial request to enter my phone number, as I don't have a Verizon plan as of yet, so that I may test out the phone that I was given (the HTC Incredible). The goal is to be able to connect the device to my WiFi and use the Incredible to do everything it is capable of except for phone calls and MMS's... I am very eager to see how much can be done with this new toy. Any advice?

All you have to do is turn on your WiFi at home hit the menu button at the bottom of the incredible tap settings, go to wireless and networks, turn on WiFi, tap WiFi settings and it should of scanned and found your WiFi signal tap on it hit connect and there you go
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App

As soon as I am able to get into the phone I will do that, thank you. Right now the Incredible, since the power completely drained then charged and I tried to use the phone, I am first asked to enter my phone number. The phone won't allow me to access the menu or anything else until I enter a phone number. What I need to know is how to bypass that request for my phone number. Do you know how this is done?

[Q] Phone On Wifi Only Internationally?

Hey guys,
So I know that this question was already posted up for other phones, and other countries, but I just wanna BE SURE in this particular case as well...
I left California, and am in South Korea right now, and was wondering if I would get roaming charges for using my Epic 4G? What if I turn OFF the data roaming, and or set it to Sprint only? Can I use wifi without fear insane billing later?
Sorry again to have to ask a second time like this, but I just wanna be sure -- someone else who was with Verizon said her network costs $100/day to roam, and I don't make that kinda money.
Turn off data completely and then turn on WiFi. I do it in Jamaica all the time. U could also do airplane mode and then turn WiFi on. 6 of one.
Sent from my Epic on Midnight or my Galaxy Tab rooted (feels naked without a ROM)
Yeah, just turn on airplane mode then turn on wifi.
FYI, you can set it up so you can receive and make wifi calls for free (at least to the USA) using your Sprint number. If you want instructions, let me know.
Yes please! Would using that method enable me to make calls to USA numbers, or only numbers that happen to actually BE currently located in the USA?
Thanks for the help and putting up with me!

You would be able to make (free) calls to any US/Canada number, no matter where they are. And low-cost international calls (you will need credit in your Google Voice account). People receiving your calls would see your Sprint number on the caller id, and people calling your Sprint number would be able to reach you no matter where in the world you are (so long as you have a wifi connection.
OK. Here is what you do.
1) Sign up for a Google Voice account if you don't have one already. I'm guessing you will be able to do that from Korea, if not, use a US proxy server or something.
2) Tell it that you want your Sprint number to be your Google Voice number. You don't have to do this step if you don't want to, but if you don't, people will have to call your separate Google Voice number and that is the number that will be displayed on the caller IDs of people who you are calling.
3) Go to Options>Voice settings (button is at the very top right hand corner). Under forwarded phones, you should see Google chat as an option. Check it. You should see your Sprint/GV number as an option and it should be checked by default. I don't think it matters too much whether you leave it like that since your cell antennas should be off but if you uncheck it make sure to check it when you go back to the states otherwise you will not be able to receive calls with your Sprint service.
4) Download Siprdoid. The first time you open it up, it should give you the option to create a new account with your GV account. Go ahead and do that. Then press menu on your phone, and settings, then "SIP Account" (that should be the very first thing on the menu). Make sure that the "Use WLAN" setting is checked.
5) If you also want to make calls to international numbers, add some money to the GV account via their website. The rates for South Korean numbers are $.02/min and $.05/min for landlines and mobile lines, respectively.
6) When you get back to the states, either make sure Siproid isn't running or uncheck forwarding to Google chat. Otherwise you'll end up having your phone getting two calls at the same time!
That should be all! I haven't had a chance to test this out outside of the country. But I have turned off everything except wifi and tried and it works perfectly. I am confident it will work the same in Korea because it all works over the Internet. I hope I made these instructions clear enough. If not feel free to ask me to clarify.
ETA: I would also install the GV app on your phone as the Sprint voicemail app will longer receive voicemail. At least I think it won't. I deleted it a long time ago.

That won't work... you can't enable wireless in airplane mode, at least on every 2.2 rom I've used. Samsungs fault, so unless you are running cm7 don't think you can do that.
You can however completely disable the cell radio from the info menu.
1) Open the dialer enter: *#info*1111#
2) phone info (top option) - scroll to the bottom.
3) click disable radio button
Do this after every phone reboot, the radio will re-enable itself at boot.
This will turn the cell radio off but allow you to use wifi. If you leave the radio on its going to waste tons of battery searching for a sprint signal it will never find with 100% time without signal.

Straight talk galaxy s3 Verizon version

I have the straight talk galaxy s3 that runs on Verizon towers...I have my contract 4G sim in the phone running a Verizon rom and everything does work but it roams everywhere I go and I don't get any 4G (disabled by straight talk). I was wondering if flashing a sprint rom would help at all? I seen the sticky saying not to flashing any rom from another carrier but I've flashed dozens of different roms and all has been good except the roaming. Anyways, just wanted to see if I could get some help here. Thanks in advance
What would it take to enable the 4G on this phone?

You might have to configure your APNs, or, if you haven't for a long time, you might need to update your modem, since you don't get that sort of update with custom ROMs. On my Virgin Mobile phone, I have to flash an APN fix on every new ROM, otherwise I just have 3G.

The straight talk version I have runs off Verizon towers and they have 4G disabled but the phone is suppose to be 4G enabled. The apn fixes didn't help. I'm wondering if this would need something like cdma workshop.
Ah, I see. Yeah, if the 4g is blocked on multiple ROMs, you'll need an app to fiddle with the sim card. Hopefully it's not hard blocked (a physical switch or the card is incapable of it even though the phone is)! I'd try to contact Straight Talk and/or see if it works on stock. If you're trying to get 4g without straight talk knowing, well, I don't know much about that, but CDMA workshop or something similar might be worth a shot.
I was thinking cdma workshop would be the answer but I don't know where they have it turned off. It sucks being confined to 3G when the phone is 4G compatible and straight talk will allow 4G on there Verizon network now.

Help 4g

Hello friend, i bought a new m9 and when i activate data mobile i have only 3g , i tryed factory reset, to setup my network,

As stated already , the signal could be weak in your area. Type in the dialer key pad ##3282# and you can also look to make sure all the bands are enabled on your device. I don't see why they wouldn't be though. A handful of users have stated bad connectivity with the M9, but that's on the sprint network I have been reading about.
at ##3282# it say only OK.. nothing about enable bands and i tryed sim of my friend (vodafone 4g) he have m8 and 4g working... on my m9 doesnt..

I have same problem with my M9+. In Manchester Area UK
I had perfect 4G with my old M8 but with new phone only 3G!!
Let me know if you get any answers. HTC and Vodafone couldnt help me either.
Check access point names, make sure only one is listed and selected.
Go to networks and search for network, click automatic.
Open the connectivity selection and make sure that the scalable option is chosen (2g/3g/4g)
Are you using one Base with the wrong firmware? Make sure they match up.
Find a friend on the same network or shared network and see if they have 4g in your location.
Test the sim in another phone.
Call network to check for issues in your area and or if there is an error against your account, may need a new sim if that one is old.
Test in major parts of the city center next time you're shopping..
Perform a speed test to see what speed you're actually getting, hspa is up to 20mb, 4g AFAIK is around 60mb, I've had 48 before. Anything over 20 could be considered 4g, you will very very rarely see a 3G tariff go over 19mb, which is the most I've ever seen.
Good luck.

I have the same issue with the M9. Couldn't find an answer for this problem. Even tried opening lte bands as listed here but no luck.
The thing is that I used to get LTE where I am now, went on long holiday and can't get it to work again so no idea what's up.

I tried my sim with my wife's iphone and i got 4g without any problem. It's not a sim issue. Whatever the problem is, it's with the device (hardware, software, settings). I remember it also took me a few weeks after getting the M9 to get a 4g signal, but then one day it just appeared so there's that to add to the mystery.

Reset your network settings mate, set to manual then back to automatic.
Make sure you actually catch the network on manual first before manual. You will find it, it's just a case of going through the motions.
Also click menu, reset to defaults in access point names.

1. How do you "reset network settings"?
2. set to manual - you mean in 'Network operators' menu select 'Search networks', select my network, then go back and selecting 'Select automatically'?
3. What do you mean "just a case of going through the motions"?
4. Should I reset APN at the last step or at the beginning?
I'm trying to understand your steps as clearly as i possible can because this no 4g issue took a lot of time and effort from me and it still doesn't work. Any help is very much appreciated.

I am trying to help you.
There are no steps it's just a case of trying everything to do with the network. If what you say is true and you've literally just had this issue occur out of the blue then it has to be a difference on the handset, especially seeing as you have tested the sim in another phone and it works.
Reset to default is with apn, doesn't matter when you do this just reset them, make sure it's checked and cycle mobile data on and off.
Clarify that your device is set to 2g/3g/4g within network mode (I believe it's called)
And I was referring to setting network selection to manual within mobile network settings, then choosing your network, then researching and selecting automatic.
The path is: settings / mobile data / network operators / search networks, wait for yours and select it, cycle mobile data (turn off then back on) if that doesn't work, switch back to automatic.
Reboot your phone after making changes, perform the full shut down method instead of the restart or power off methods, it's power and volume up AFAIK, hold for 10+ seconds, might be 15.
Going through the motions refers to checking anything and everything which influences the network, one of these setting will get it working..
Might be seen as overkill but a factory reset (if it's not been tried already) good luck.

I know you are trying to help me, and I very much appreciate it. Truly am.
I tried doing all the steps you listed, but no luck. Even tried at some point to force lte only in 4636 screen but that resulted in no signal at all. Trying to manually select a network in that setting only gives me the other 2 networks that work in the area but not vodafone which is what I use.
As a complete overkill I RUU earlier to the new 2.11.617 firmware without signing into my google account or restoring anything, and still no lte. What I did saw however, in the select network screen, was that next to my network, it said 2g/3g and next to the other 2 networks here it said 2g/3g/4g. Obliviously I can't select them as it's a vodafone simcard.
I added here SS from LTE discovery app while i was on 'lte only' mode. You can see signal is there but it cannot connect.
Any wild ideas or suggestions? I'm opened to try almost anything
Just out of interest, have you tried a different sim card? I know you said that your sim worked in another phone but I'd still be tempted to contact voda to get a new sim and to see if everything is set up on a network level, you may have to tell via that the issue is persistent in different phones or they may make you pay for it.
Also, might be something to do with the association between your phone and your sim. I once had a sim that blocked my missus, she could call me but I couldn't call her, no active diverts of any kind, I could call anyone and they could call me, got a new sim and it was sorted. Very strange, but anomalies like this do occur.
Have you got any mods or are you at stock at the moment? I know you said ruu. Oh and lol click thanks BTW.

Well the thing is that my wife's sim card in my phone only gets 3g. On her iPhone it's 4g. My sim card in my wife's iPhone gets 4g. On my phone only 3g so it seems like a very specific problem with my device.
Shortly after ruu I installed viper 3.5 without any mods..
Can it be that my device is somehow blocked by the network towers or something of that nature?
Maybe a hidden setting somewhere that blocking the phone's 4g capabilities? This is getting ridiculous..

No worries fella
If you've already tried another sim and it's still not happening, the firmware matches the rom, your sim works in other phones with 4g. Then I'm really not sure mate..
Give Lee droid a whirl that's what I'm using at the moment.. A simple but great rom..
I'm pretty much out of ideas now, if all of the above has been checked then it's something that I'm not aware of.. Sorry mate..
for the record it is a weird one, something should have got it working by now..

Will post an update if i will have one.

Google Project Fi - Force Default Carrier?

Hello everyone! I have a question, which I'm sure I already know the answer to, but figured I'd ask all the smart people here.
I have the unlocked 2XL from the Google Store using Project Fi. I have both an eSIM and physical, both giving same results. My phone always defaults to Sprint as the carrier of the three (Sprint, T-Mobile and US Cellular). I can forch jump to T-Mobile or US Cellular, but my phone will always default back to Sprint after a reboot or after sitting for about an hour. I've also purchased FiSwitch (amazing app btw), and I force jump to T-Mobile using it and even the dialer codes (same difference), but it always goes back to Sprint. I reached out to the Dev of FiSwitch as well and was instructed FiSwitch can't force it to stay on T-Mobile. Sprint's service is just subpar to T-Mobile in my area (home and work). T-Mobile provides better signal strength, quality and network speeds. I'd love to make T-Mobile my default unless I choose to change it.
My question... Is there anyway to force my phone to always use T-Mobile as the preferred carrier? Through build.prop or other means? My guess is this might be programmed into the radio, meaning I'm probably out of luck. I am rooted as well, which hopefully will help me with replies. Thank you!

Thanks for the quick reply! Those codes, along with FiSwitch are what I've been using. Unfortunately, after force jump to another carrier from Sprint, my phone will always move back to Sprint after a reboot or after just sitting for about an hour. Force jumpting to T-Mobile, for example, doesn't actually turn off the auto feature permanently. Per the FiSwitch Dev, he's not sure there is a way to force it to jump to and stay on T-Mobile, the phone after sometime will always jump back to "auto", putting it back on Sprint in my case.
I guess I'm looking for a way to not temp jump to T-Mobile, but force my phone to always use T-Mobile unless I chose otherwise.

Thank you!

I have that app, it's the one I mention in the OP. It can force switch, but it's not permanent.
Hey! Have you had any luck with it? I’m facing the same issue...
I've not found a way to force lock it to a certain carrier, but I did find by accident that using the "next" option with FiSwitch, cycling through until I land on the carrier I want, it will stay there until I hit an area where it drops, in which case it will automatically switch to another that works in the area.
I basically sit locked on TMobile now except one area I go where TMobile doesn't work well and it will jump to Sprint. I just hit "next" in FiSwitch when I leave that area and lock in TMobile again. :good:
Woah, thanks a lot for your kind reply. I’ll see how it works on my pixel. Strange, that they haven’t came up with a solution for a longer period of time as looking around, much people has this kind of issues.
Thanks for your prompt reply!!

My phone on reboot will default to the best signal, I live in Chicago but work just over the border in Indiana, when at work often my phone will reboot to Sprint, but as I cross back into Illinois it will go T-mobile on a reboot. I am using an E-sim. I also use Signal Spy for my switching needs.
What happens if you only use e-sim?

I get the same results with ESim vs physical. I just mainly use physical over the ESim because of my flashing between stock and custom ROMs and Google 2FA is a pain with only an ESim since the phone is not activated until I actually login to my Google account whereas with physical SIM, I can get a SMS backup code right from the start. :good:

I know this is not exactly what you want but what if you used Tasker to do the switch to Sprint for you on reboot.
Only decent workaround I could think of.

Now data after returning to stock

Ok so I had to reactivate my Z2 Force Sprint., and after set up I do not have any data. It show 3G then LTE then nothing.. I tried flash all twice, but still can't get full data.. I was on Lineage, but went back to stock as I was going to sell this phone.. but now I'm not sure how to proceed. Any ideas will help thanks.

I'm in the same situation, update from nougat to Oreo and I ran out of mobile network, if I find any solution, I'll let you know.
Sprint is suppose to be sending me another phone. Will see, so I went and relocked the bootloader.. At this time I don't care if it is stock or not.

I went to Motorola to get the factory images for this phone, can't seem to find any.. funny with bootloader locked, I get a message, that a different software other than factory installed on phone.. How, when I flashed the flashall that is suppose to be 100 percent stock.
Found out what appears to be the issue.. Up at Sprint, my ICCID (sim) Doesn't match what's in the phone.. Why I do not know.. I gave them two other sim cards, and they claim they are not compatible but, one is the original one from the phone.. So tomorrow I have to go to Sprint and get another.. To add insult to injury, the Galaxy S6 I purchased, and billed as new.. In fact is not new, was a refurbished unit.. Ok, but the mic does not work.. Went to Sprint to get it replaced $75, but because it has a after market screen and not original, they won't touch it.. Again, no mentioned at time of purchase.. Luckily for me I'm getting my money back on it.. Talk about a bad day, and a couple of effed up phones..
Did Lineage OS work?

Doubledragon5,
Did having your phone on Lineage OS allow you to use data/calling/network service?

Sorry, I need to clarify. Alot of Moto Z2 Force users have issues using their "unlocked" phones on compatible carriers. For instance, I have an unlocked Sprint Version of the phone, yet cannot use it on the Verizon network (even though both phones have compatible hardware). So there must be a glitch or Carrier lock in the phone's "Software Channel" preventing people from using their device on other networks (aka: have their phone unlocked).
Did using Lineage OS allow you to use your phone with whatever carrier (SIM change) without any modification besides the OS?
Please let me know if I need to clarify any further. Thank you!
Get Verizon Network to work on your Sprint Moto Z2 Force!
Follow these steps!

Sorry. I did not use my phone on any other carrier.. But I believe this phone you can use on T-Mobile, Cricket or even AT&T.. Providing it is also GSM compatible.. A buddy of mine recently left Sprint, and has a Iphone 7 and he went to Cricket.. Best move he every made.. And not that the GSM is unlocked he can talk, and do internet without issues. I hope this helps. I also now have a LG G7 ThinQ as I was having issues with LTE and Call issues, and Sprint sent me that, and I sent then back my Moto Z2 Force.

Verizon is the only carrier you can't use. Verizon is a CDMA carrier. They must have your IMEI in their database to get calls, sms, MMS, etc. AT&T works, T-Mobile works... They are GSM so as long as the phone can connect to the towers, they don't care really.

Verizon is ALSO GSM and 4G LTE...and switching over to 5G. Strange thing is, when we initially got the Sprint phone and put in the Verizon SIM card, the phone actually recognized the Verizon SIM and all data, network, and calling WERE working, without having any dialog with Verizon (ALSO: without the phone's IMEI number on Verizon's database). It wasn't until the phone was updated to a more current Oreo Operating System that the SIM card wasn't recognized. Leading me to understand/believe that THERE DOES EXIST a ROM that allows a Sprint Moto Z2 Force to work on the Verizon network...just a matter of finding which one.
Also, when we installed Lineage OS onto the Sprint Moto Z2 Force, the Network options actually ALLOWED us to put in Access Point Name (APN) fields, but prevented us from saving them, saying user access denied (Rooting the phone may allow access to these settings?).
Also, once Lineage OS was installed, the Network could be taken off from, "Actively Connect" to a network and re-directed to a Carrier specific Network...Verizon being one of them, yet when doing so, we received an error message, "SIM card prevented linkage"....This we are assuming IS an issue with the IMEI (???), yet the IMEI # is different than the SIM #.
We currently are trying to work with Verizon Wireless to alter their, "Bring Your Own Device" settings to see if they WILL ALLOW a compatible hardware phone to be added to their platform by adding the IMEI to their database...
Still trouble shooting and fingers still crossed...
UPDATE:
Verizon working on Sprint Version Moto Z2 Force via Oreo OCXS27.109-48-3 (NOT listed in Motorola mirrors lolinet firmware page). We suggest doing an install of an older version of Oreo (i.e., OCX27.109-48 from 3/2018), then a "Motorola System Update" will pop-up suggesting you to update to version Oreo OCXS27.109-48-3...once install has completed, pop in your Verizon SIM card and voila! Network connection, data service, hotspot, & voice calling all working!
Now the key is to NOT do any future updates and disable the app "System Update" and force stop "Motorola Update Services" (if rooted, disable it!).
We're still working on what Sprint Applications can/need to get disabled, as notifications for "Mobile ID and "Mobile Installer" are still on the pull down notification screen. (Rooting most likely required for these).
