When you upgraded CM, did you flash the google apps add-on? If not that is why your market & gmail were missing.
Which CM are you using? I can't get usb to mount with CM7 # 12, but I worked fine with #5.

Mine is doing this now as well following AOKP Build 23. I haven't bothered flashing anything else yet as I was doing preliminary research before work to try to find out exactly what happened and how I could fix it. (No answer yet).
Edit: I found a solution. It won't automatically turn on anymore, but I can turn it on manually under Settings > Storage. Problem fixed (for me anyway).
no idia??how can improve this
i tried that still not working is there any way to uninstall the drivers from the phone?
Had this problem after installing AOKP 23 too. Have to turn on manually.
Working now.
Could be that you have a faulty USB port. Many have reported about this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=15930021
I have the Galaxy S3 and had it rooted with CWM and Superuser, and running CM 10.1 RC5. I used Titanium to make a backup and flashable zip before going from CM 10 to 10.1 RC5 and flashed the zip after upgrading to RC5. Everything worked fine until about 12 hours later when I tried to take a picture and my phone crashed and rebooted itself. Then I noticed Titanium running saying it was restoring my app data. My wallpaper was reset back to the default but my lockscreen wallpaper wasn't reset. I also noticed that my icons for my apps were changed from what they were before this. They were all the same apps just in a different order. Which may have been what they were when I made the backup. Now my phone won't connect to my WIFI at home though my 2 laptops do, and my phone will connect to the WIFI at my friends and all the open networks at the places I go. I have entered the password over a dozen times and have even tried changing it and entering that but nothing seems to work. Also, I have already done a complete factory reset back to the original stock ROM, and still it won't connect to my WIFI. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And just to let you know I have rooted my phone again with CWM and Superuser and I am currently running CM 10. And yes I tried connecting to my WIFI and it wouldn't when it was stock.
i have the flo version, installed cm11 with glitch, but soon as i plug it into the pc i get unknown device. weird thing is it worked just fine with stock rom. i did restore to the stock rom to confirm and it did work just fine on stock.
so the problem is with cm11. all my drivers are fine as pointed out by everything being fine with stock roms.i did check to see if developer options are disabled, and if fast charge was disabled. i tried connecting to 2 other computer 1 of which is a win xp machine all them say unrecognized and i tried other usb cables. so again this is an issue which cm11 that i have no idea how to fix.
ignore this, i have fixed this on my own, i booted into recovery after installing cm11 and re formated the data/cache/dalvik booted and now it works. not sure why it would. but hey i am not gonna argue with what worked
I should mention that this phone is not mine and it was brought to me to fix. It could not get past the samsung bootup animation screen.
So I installed TWRP 2.8.6.0 and wiped everything. Then the first rom I flashed was [ROM][5.1.1][AOSPA] ParanoidAndroid 5.1 (5/21/2015) Then flashed gapps 5-22-15 from euroskank/banks. I wiped dalvik & cache (Is this necessary?) and rebooted.
The intro screen did not let me skip the wifi connecting part (I thought it was a bug in that version) and it told me to turn on wi-fi to connect.
So I tried the same thing with the version before that and it let me skip. After that I managed to turn it on once? But it the phone crashed and soft rebooted.
I tried other 5.1 roms and the wifi doesn't work still. It doesn't let me turn it on. Same with 4.4.4 with cm11. Also, the Wi-Fi MAC address says unavailable. Don't think that's supposed to happen?
Does anyone have a fix?
Edit: I took out the SIM card to see if that did anything. Then all of a sudden the grayed out On button turned blue and wifi networks appeared... But I couldn't do anything else since it made me restart. It stopped working after a reboot :/ Tried it several more times and couldn't get it to do the same thing..

Hope you had read the posts, it should had said the Rom is not "stable"
If your friend are going use their phone for daily driver, then I recommend you not have the 5.1 Roms for now because it's not really suitable for that right now.....
I'm not sure the CM11 you have flashed is unoffical or is offical. Offical onces are still work in progress and have most of the things broke (I think)
Here is a Kitkat Rom for SGH-T989
If your friend really wanted to have a Lollipop running on his/her phone, then I will recommend this one. Make sure you read the instruction CAREFULLY if you do wanted to install this one since it's a bit complicated with it's "virtual partition"
Or, if you wanted it to be just stock. Odin it back to normal, here is a instruction (with video too).
This is all the possible way to fix your friend's phone that I can think of, if you have encounter any error or have anymore question, feel free to reply :fingers-crossed::good::highfive:
P.S: yes, wiping dalvik & cache is a way to prevent any error caused by another old Rom if you decided to flash a new one. It's a good way to prevent error during Rom flash process
Thanks! I'll try the 4.4.4 rom you sent me. I'll post an update when I get to it.
Uh and about the 5.1 you linked. For the virtual repartition part in his post, I couldn't open the phone's internal storage on the computer after formatting it to ext4. So I'm confused about that step.

For the virtual partition, it's best for you to have it on the External SD card. Since TWRP transporting file to Internal Storage after that seems bugged (not working)

If you're pretty sure you just flashed another ROM, why not just do that again?
Or if you can access menus by tapping, can you sideload a keyboard .apk?
