Internal phone browser and 4g - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

4g works great for me when I am tethering. Netflix just screams.
However when I have 4g turned on and try to view web pages on the phones default internet browser or Dophin HD or Mini then pages just don't load. The progress bar get's about halfway and then just stops for up to 5 minutes sometimes and then the page continues to load. I click on a link and again wait for up to 5 minutes and then the new page loads....
If I turn off 4g and just browse with 3g then browser pages open right up no delays at all.
This is very frustrating. Does anyone else have this issue or know what is up or how to fix it?

Do you have AdFree installed? If so, uninstall it. AdFree is known to cause web browsing issues when on 4G.

Yes I do. I am using Koni's Elite Series II mod. I will try uninstalling that app and see.
Thanks!

It didn't help to uninstall Adfree.
Any other Suggestions?

Did you reboot after uninstalling? That might help. I would probably wipe cache and dalvik too. Other than that, I'm not sure what else could be causing it.
I would check in the thread for the ROM you are using and see if anyone else is having the same problem.

I rebooted but I didn't wipe cache and dalvik. I did check the thread and I couldn't find anything.
Thanks for your help!

Can you explain the logic behind how adfree affects 4g? All it is is a front end for updating the hosts file which does nothing but redirect certain ad sites to either local host or some other IP, depending how you have it set up.

No actually I can't explain it. I just know I've seen it mentioned several times and people reported that deleting it solved their problem.
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G with Tapatalk

I still haven't come up with a solution for this. So if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Don't just uninstall it -- that doesn't revert the change it made. In fact, you'll need to go back and reinstall it. Open it up and click the revert button. Then you can uninstall it.
I think you can also just delete /etc/hosts, but using Adfree to do it is probably a bit easier.

ok I will try that. Thank you.

[Q] Ad free app breaks 4g??

I dont live in a 4g area so this is hard for me to test. When i was away for work in a 4g area i noticed some web pages would load and some would load halfway and stop. Im rooted running evio rom from caulklin. After playing around for a while it seemed once i uninstalled ad free the problem went away. Can anybody else confirm this or have a fix? Thanks!
Anybody? I cant be the only one.
Can you list some of the site you were having issues with? I use Ad Free and live in a 4G area. If you give me some specifics I can test it out for you.
Yes it does. Noticed this a couple of months ago. When using 4G and ad free, a site will not load passed the first ad. It will get stuck in the ad tag and prevent the entire page from loading. Using 3G or WiFi the site will load. 4G really isn't broken as you can use it for anything else that requires a data connection but you won't be able to load pages with ads.
For example, on 4G, load espn.go.com. It won't load. Now load the adless espn mobile site. It will work.
This is an interesting problem, because Adfree does not interfere with browser operation on 3G or WiFi or with non-browser apps. The issue is specific to 4G and browsers. There must be a simple work around?
Wow I have been having the same issue and did know what the cause of it was. My first thought it must have be the custom rom that was causing this issue. I will uninstall Ad free to see if the issue does in deed go away.
Update: Yup, that did resolved my issue. Thanks OP
AdFree merely replaces the hosts.txt file in the \system\etc directory. Are you guys implying that removing AdFree restores the stock file? I'm having this web page loading issue but I manually swapped out the hosts file without installing AdFree...
If so, that's a tough decision...no ads or full browser......
How did you get the original hosts file. I need it because my uninstallation of adfree didn't fix my problem with the browser not fully loading pages .

AdFree has a button to revert your hosts file. So reinstall, revert, then restart.

Market hung on "starting download"

I have been searching for the past couple hours and haven't turned up a fix. A lot of people have suggested reflashing gapps and I'd love to do that but I can't find the apk or zip for it anywhere. Does anyone have a dl link for it? Or perhaps another solution?
Happened to me before. The market heals itself with time.

Try cancelling and re-starting the download. If that doesn't work, open up Settings>Applications>Manage Applications, find Market, Force Close it, then re-open and re-install the updated app. Works for me every time.

Done that 20 times already. I've also wiped and reflashed twice too.
I found the gapps zip and flashed it, of course that didn't work. I just noticed that I can't sign in to google talk either. Everthing I've read says that the market is heavily dependent on gtalk.
I am extremely frustrated and want to throw my evo through my damn window.
try opening Talk and letting that sign in, then restart your download and see if it works. If it still doesn't sign talk out and then back in and try again.
Works for me every time, I think there is a glitch that both apps must be logged on to work

Nope. I can't sign in to Talk.
By chance did you recently change your WiFi access point setup? Or recently attach to it? Your WiFi / router may be firewalling your outbound access. I figured this out after a lot of time banging my head with the same problem.
Even more bizzare was that once connection attempts occurred on my WiFi, just shutting off the WiFi did not resolve like I thought it would. I figured it would go to the 3G to continue... but you actually would have to power down the phone (battery out) to get it going.
Ultimately, I had to open up my port access (outbound) for my phone.
Go into settings. Force close market under running programs. Clear data. Open market. Fixed

Maybe for most people... but when I had this problem, that wasn't the cure. Although I suggest he start with your suggestion... if that doesn't fix, he needs to look deeper into what I mentioned to him.

In a shocking turn of events, now it is working again. I didn't even do anything, I just looked at it and it was downloading all the apps that I had tried and failed to download last night. New downloads are working too.

If you can fix that your market should work too, have you tried reinstalling GAPPS? It can be found in the Cyanogenmod ROM thread.

3g and even WiFi surfing hangups

So for about a month now, whenever I am trying load a page on my Evo's browser, it will load about half way and then just hang there for (sometimes) several minutes. Its done this on 3g, 4g and wifi. I've tried all kinds of sites (both mobile and non mobile) and it is usually the same story.
I've tried 3 different roms and I've tried both the stock browser and Dolphin with the same results. I noticed it started doing this about a month after I did that whole IP fix by changing it to 0.0.0.0. But since then I restored the default settings and the problem persists. Suggestions? Or did Sprint change something and now this is just how it is?
I'm running myn warm 2.2 rls5 with the stock kernal, 3.70 and rooted using unrevoked.

there's a fix. download an app from the market called ad free. Once its installed, open it and hit "revert". Then reboot. Browser will be fixed. Its because the ad blocking hosts on your rom are out of date, so the browser chokes. This will bring ads back to apps, but you should be able to update the hosts file again, then be ad free with normal browser speeds. Its a known issue, only for some people.though. ad free hosts are cooked into some roms, and they get out of date. Just give it a shot.

[Q] Issues with Youtube

Hello,
Today I've been experiencing the following error with YouTube:
I can access the application fine, browse videos, search videos, access my YouTube account and favorites, etc... everything perfectly fine.
When I tap on a video it starts to load but then it stops and displays "Unable to connect to server - Touch to retry. If I do as it says, it just keeps that cycle.
Now I can stream videos just fine and prior to today I could watch videos without issues. My app version is 2.2.16.
Things I've tried:
1. Pulled out battery for 5 min.
2. Cleared app cache and data
3. Uninstalled the app and cleared Cache / dalvik in CWM then reinstalled
No luck. I haven't had any luck of it working under 3g or 4g, still haven't tested wifi (not at home at the moment, but will edit and report back).
I'm running Stock EH06 rooted odexed.
Attached is an extract of my alogcat that will have some fishy errors regarding Youtube, any assistance is my appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

your data connection might have been too slow where u tried.
Yes, it may have been a bad data connection..ie down tower. I just tried same version on wifi and mine works. Try wifi and see how it works. If you delete the app, use root explorer and search for youtube to make sure you get all remnants of files as well then reinstall from the market.
OK so its hard to believe that the whole state of MA is full of bad 3g / 4g internet towers, again, I can access internet just fin and normal speeds. (been driving around several towns and still the same result)
I got to a wifi location and it works... I will try deleting all instances and files I find from the app, but what other suggestions you guys may have if this doesn't work?

Tried it but YouTube was already located in data/app... so I did it the other way around and no dice.
I ended up reflashing the ROM and getting everything back up and running from scratch, and now everything works normally. Don't know what it was really but, must of been the amount of hacks I was performing over the weekend with it, something just didn't play nice with YouTube...
Thanks all for your time and efforts!
I know that the latest version of Youtube is screwed up for our epics, which in that case you just uninstall updates and you're good to go.

Ty, I've been hunting for a solution for some time now, and I didn't think of something like that.... It is true, when I disabled AdBlock Plus, I didn't see the error again.
Guess I either need a replacement for Adblock Plus, or something in it's settings to change?? hmmmm.

wow thanks for this. It's been driving me insane. I removed Adblock Plus and it worked. So I installed AdAway and rebooted. Seems to still work fine also. So try that ad blocking app out. So far so good.
Solved ! ( apparently not related to AdBlockPlus)
To make a long story short, I don't have AdBlockPlus but i DO have DroidWall installed.
just forgot I had to allow "MediaServer" to access the internet (as well as YouTube of course) - problem solved.
This has been happening to me. I fixed it by going to manage apps. YouTube, Delete cache, delete data, uninstall updates and I clicked the turn off button. Ran cleanmaster app and removed junk files. Then I rebooted and turned youtube back on and now videos will play. I'm on the Galaxy S4 stock.
Hopefully this helps someone
By the way Facebook wouldn't play any videos it would say "can't play video" and now Facebook is playing the same videos that it couldn't before.

It's happening to me now too. But since mine's installed as a User App and not a System App, I can't just uninstall the updates, although I did try uninstalling it completely and reinstalling. No joy.
I've tried a dozen different things. You should know that lots of people post lots of "solutions", but for 95% of the users, none of them work.
I'm hurting especially bad, because it happens to me on both types of connections (4G & WiFi). I even tried a 3rd party YouTube app and that wouldn't work either.
All this since today's (or last night's?) v10.25.57 YouTube update!

Hi,
I tried disabling AdAway and reverting back to the original Hosts file, but no joy.
This time, it's affecting both my 4G & WiFi connections. When this happened before, I could at least watch it on 4G.
The weird thing is, that if I'm not signed in, I can watch videos. But once I sign in, EVEN WHEN USING A 3RD PARTY YOUTUBE APP, I have the problem!
Yes, eventually a YouTube update will come through that will fix it (could be 6 months or so), but I'm thinking that something "underneath" it all got updated/changed at the same time, because otherwise;
Why would it affect me only when I sign in?
And if it was limited to only the YouTube app being updated and there isn't anything else being changed at the same time in the background where you don't see it, then how could 3rd party YouTube apps be affected when you sign in to them with your Google (Gmail) account?
See what I mean? Something else, "under the hood" simply must be going on, amen?
