Htc desire pvt-4
S-ON
HbooT- 0.93
rooted my htc desire with unrevoked, but my device still have the S-On .
so i have to s-off but not sure which method to use !
should i use alpharev 1.8?
any good guide !
any links for amon-ra 2.0.1 desire !
Million threads like this.
for PVT4 you need to flash AmonRA 2.0.0 (or 2.0.1), because CWM 2.5.0.7 won't work.
thanks mate ,am just not sure whether to use AmonRA or alpharev?
Well the thread was different when I wrote the previous reply. AmonRa is recovery, Alpharev is for S-Off.
Sent from my customized HTC Desire using TTP
amonRa is just a recovery, the only way to s-off is alpharev. Do you even need to s-off tho?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I dunno if i want to s-off ,all i want is to install custom roms !
To install custom roms you don't need s-off.
Just flash amon-ra 2.0.1 with unrevoked and you're good to go.

Look here for AmonRA
And no, you can not flash it via ROM manager.
Flashed it via unrevoked ,works like a charm !

Thanks

So, here we go,
I am totally new to all this stuff, I got my Desire a few days ago. Actually before I was using an Iphone...So, a friend of mine told me I had to root my Device and sent me this noob proof guide from your forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
I started to do it step by step, but I did not read that little thing with the erase size data 40000. I rooted my Device with the unrevoked clockworkmod and did the errormessage "can't find misc".
I looked carefully in the thread and found the answer that I need to do the same thing with the Amon-RA recovery instead of clockwork and I did that. After a time
Unrevoked says "rooting..." and then "Is your firmware to new?"
What to do now? thanks for help
z0mtec
just tried around with different unrevoked and amon-ra versions, finally it worked with unrevoked 3.21 und amon-ra v2.0.0
Out of interest, could you check in hboot if you are s-off now.

It is still on "S-ON" why you asking?
hi, i meet same probleme at beginning.
i resolve that by using unrevoked v3.21
will install cwm 2.1.5.3, you would be able to flash your recovery with ra v2.0.1 once s-off alpharev.
use fastboot to do so
hope this help
edit you can used custom recovery in the menu file unrevoked to select amon_ra recovery 2.0.1
I've successfuly applied cwm 3.0.2.4 recovery with the latest unrevoked, though i was forced to apply 2.2 rom before patching))
sorry, i have no expireince with amon-ra.
No matter mate. It s Ur phone... Was to carry some help. If you sorted out that s the matter. Have fun

Danke! This solution really works even without S-OFF. We were looking hard at so many other solutions but this by far is the easiest and effective.
Actually no because unrevoked only works a 2nd time, sometimes.
The best way is to s-off and fastboot flash recovery.

I had this idea for a long time now. Questions and answers are scattered all over XDA now, so it can be difficult to find correct information even using search, as there are too many irrelevant search results.
So here is my idea. N00b friendly thread, where n00bs can ask ANYTHING. I hope that more experienced users will join me. If you have an answer and feel like helping poor n00b, just join in. If you want to abuse a n00b, well, i suppose you could create a thread called "abuse a noob" and do as you like there.
Ask ANY questions which are related to HTC Desire here guys. Battery, flashing, rooting etc. and we will try to direct you to place where you can find info or give you an answer if we know it. Do that instead of creating useless thread with just one question in it. Please, include as much detail as you can when asking something.
This is opportunity for peeps to ask questions without being sworn at, and for the helpers to earn their THANKS.
reserved in case thread successful and some faq is built.

Have you tried flashing it again? What are your attempted fixes so far?
I flashed it for the second time now and I still have the same problem.

Have you tried different recovery?

No. Can you give me the link to the best one?
Try 3.0.0.5. It worked for me - link in sig.
It's the same one I have.
I'm using amonra 2.0.0, and it's yet to give me any problems. I must admint i haven't tried flashing latest IC.
Now even when I try to restore the backup, it doesn't work...it still gets stuck in the "why so serious screen?"
I had a normal non custom htc sense before. Help please!

1--If I want to install a gingrbrd rom say leedroid's 3.0..do I need to upgrade my Hbot? If yes, how to it in a safe manner?
2--Is it really necessary to S-OFF?I just install some themes, new roms n games..wats advantage of it for me?
3--Also how to root desire as per latest softwares?Ofcourse my phone is rooted a long time back by me n i don remember what exactly i did? i remember using Unrevoked.I lost all software now..Links plz coz i want to root my frnd's desire with hboot 0.93.001 n amoled display..

1. You most likely are going to need 0.93 hboot, best way to do it to s-off and flash latest hboot. 2. Advantage is that you can flash different hboot and try data++/cm7 roms. Also this allows safer radio flash. S-on doesn't allow you to edit system folder when Rom is running, s-off does.
3. Look in rooting guide stickie, not much changed, you still need to use unrevoked.

Is the Insertcoin rom the right size for the cm7 hboot you are using?
If its too big you won't be able to boot it without changing the partition table.

Judging by the info he's given everything is ok.
Problem solved. I couldn't flash the ROM because I partitioned the SDcard with EXT4 directly from the computer, not via phone.

Try to enter recovery manually (power off, then Vol- + power until Hnoot screen appears). If it doesn't work, install 4ext app and flash different recovery.

First of all, get rid of ROM Manager. It's a horrible software and causes more problems than it solves. Second of all, please post information from your hboot (top left corner).

don't bother with unrevoked as you are on 2.3.3. revolutionary works for 2.3.3, but you don't even need to use it as you're conveniently already S-OFF...
do you already have a custom recovery installed? power down, then power and vol down to get to bootloader, select recovery. if one is installed you can root your existing rom by flashing superuser.zip from here, or wipe and install a custom rom without doing anything else.
if you don't have a recovery, you're already S-OFF so you can use fasboot to flash a new recovery such as 4EXT. read suroot's guide on adb and fastboot (just read the fastboot part) on how to do it.

true but if he wants to backup any apps before custom rom he will need root first.
@salmankhere, follow instructions on my first post to root your existing rom. then install titanium backup to backup user apps and data.
backup your contacts to google, and use 'sms backup and restore' if you want to backup your texts.
then as ckpv5 says, go ahead and install your custom rom as they will already be rooted. then use the same apps to restore contacts, apps and texts afterwards.
