[Q] turn screen on - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi i just noticed that using the power button of the DHD to turn the screen on and off stresses the power button. right now i'[m using a widget to turn my screen off. i just want to ask if theres an app or anything that can make the volume controls turn the screen on?

Simple answer "No". Don't worry the power button is made for that. It won't die just because you press it to turn screen on/or restart your device.

ok, thanks for the reply sir

Look in the apps section in android development and hacking, someone made an app to turn the screen on and off without buttons, for people using cases, but it should suit your situation too

[Q] How to distinguish between Screen off and Device off?

Hello,
How can one distinguish between when the screen is off and when the phone itself is turned off?
I mean, with the screen off, a single press on the power button, makes it come back on again.
But when the device is off, a single press on the power button turns on the device.
I thought a long press would be needed to turn on the device, but a normal press is enough.
As a result, I can't distinguish between the two states and sometimes turn on the device when I would have liked to let it turned off because I did not remember if I turned it off already.
Thanks for your help
I had the same issue. No fix on the desire, but can download appreciate that helps......

Some roms have the ability to unlock with menu or trackpad button.
What rom are you using?
Yes if you are root the simple solution is to allow unlock on trackpad I use it myself, and it is very comfortable
I'm on the latest OTA ROM, non rooted.
I have heard of WidgetLocker, but without a way to try it, I'm not sure it will work nicely with the sense UI.
widgetlocker works, plus it has sense theme.

Have you tried calling your phone? This will definitely tell you if it's on or not.

Interesting, not necessarily convenient, but interesting idea
If you use a media player that starts the music once you plug the headphones.
Also plug it in an USB or an AC outlet.

MOD --> disable home wakeup

Hello,
For the S3.
the home button & the volumes button are disabled with this zip.
Just the power button will wake up your phone. Battery saver
Flash it with CWM.

Grtz!

Hi, nice feature. But please can you provide a undo .zip?

I would prefer one that ONLY wakes the phone with the home button

How is this a battery saving mod? Does the home-button wakeup feature actually consume some battery?

Me too! Very useful when out at concerts etc. I found that the constant movement would cause the power button to be hit, then screen would stay on for a minute with contact through thin trousers/shorts.
Eventually I found phone was quite warm and battery was slightly reduced.
And I have no idea what the volume wake does, but I have left it enabled.
How about wake up with volume keys

Basically, the file gpio-keys.kl contains four lines corresponding to both volume keys, power button and the home button.
The zip I posted removes the WAKE from just the power button. So the volume keys behave in the same way they would without the modification.
The zip the op posted removes the WAKE from the volume keys and the home button, but not the power button. (so the volume keys will no longer wake the device).
I don't know what this difference means, I assume it may have something to do with volume changing when listening to music? But I have no idea.
Does this clear it up?
But the volume keys dont wake up the phone by default right?

Nope, not as far as I have ever seen.
But they were set to WAKE, so I left them that way.
Is there a flashable file that can enable that?
Thanks1

the button doesn't, but the screen coming on does. Disabling the button is handy, when phones in pocket, and button keeps pressing.

Enable wake on volume key press? I honestly don't know how, according to the file that I modified they already do - but we know that they don't actually visibly affect the device.

I think acccidently pressing the power button is much easier than accidently pressing the home button, so arguably, you would save more power disabling the power button, and not the home button?
ThankĀ“s for this, love it.
i have a case on my s3 so pressing the power button is eliminated accidentally, however the home button i seem to press accidentally every time i pull it out of my pocket or even just shuffling it around.
Hey,can't test it because i have cm9!
Looking good though...
Could you make a zip for cm9 too?

Fair enough, I foolishly don't have a case for my phone. But I have insurance so that helps? (worst reasoning ever)

I just downloaded a CM9 nightly, the same file exists which this zip modifies.
This *should* work for you no issues, with the revert working aswell. Of course, nandroid first...

Tried with your Power button disabled mod.. Doesn't work.. After flashing, it still wakes up my phone.
I am on Stock firmware with Siyah Kernel.. Any suggestions. Thanks.

Screen off button, NOT WIDGET!

Is this possible? If yes, if like to make it..
And how to?

If I get what you trying to say here, you can try button saviour(root), there is a screen off and other onscreen buttons features(back/home/menu/vol etc) that's quite handy too.
If thats an app bro sorry not the one im looking for..
Im looking for something to edit in the phone to make the screen off by pressing a custom button, e.i pressing the home twice and the screen is off. Press once and the screen is on.
The power button is too far, i mean my finger needs to jump there just to turn off the screen. If u get me bro..

umm i don't think there is a mod for such a particular and specific personal perference
There are tap to execute and similar app that make use of the Proximity sensor of the phone to wake up phone without having to press the power button.
Personally I only tried softpower.
Description
Turn screen OFF and turn screen ON without touch power button.
SoftPower will safe your physical power button by use Search button or notification to turn screen OFF(and lock) and use proximity sensor changing to turn screen ON.
Note:
-Proximity sensor on device is required for Turn ON function to work.
-To uninstall, do this first. Settings-> Locations & Security(or Security in ICS)-> Device Administrators then uncheck SoftPower.

ive been looking for this too, since ALL SCREEN OFF APPS dont make your phone go into deep sleep resulting into battery drain, only the physical power button can make you phone into deep sleep and auto idle i think, im looking for a shorcut not widget or app to mimic the physical power button so i can set it into gesture and alike to make my phone go into deep sleep
try cm10 fxp150, u can easily lock your screen from notification bar
If you install cm10 I'd recommend enabling the navigation bar and setting the back button long press to make your phone sleep. It's wonderful to use!

Will the use of this app cause the phone to consume more power since it is constantly monitoring the proximity sensor?

no, my battery life still reach 14-16hours for daily use (email, chat, browse)
im not using sensor never off, so i think that will not consume more battery.
Try Gravity screen off better

How are you actually meant to turn this off?

Did anyone at HTC actually use this device? The power button is an absolute joke. 50% of the time I wind up messing with the volume on my way to turn the phone off and put it back in my pocket.
How do you guys sleep this thing? The nexus 5 buttons are so much better.

anyway, there are many different ways to turn of the screen.(root needed)
1.swipe2sleep
2.notification double tap on viper rom
3. OR u can just customize a button on ur NAV bar to turn off the phone

First I have a nexus5 also and there is no comparison on the buttons. They rattle when you shake it. Anyways maybe you have a bad device. I just set mine to hold home to turn screen off so I never even have to hit the button but my button works fine if I need it.

Indeed. I'm contemplating a return and sticking with either my moto x or nexus 5 so k won't be rooting it at the moment.
Its bizarre that they added motion gestures basically acknowledging the button isn't great, is there no off gesture?

I will look into this. Seems odd HTC has an "on" method (acknowledging they need one in addition to the sleep button) but not an off button.

Except sometimes, I long press the power button, then I get a short vibration & several options regarding resetting or powering down my phone. Thanks for confirming the presence of the other features tho! I am glad to see that the power button functions to start the device, as well as turn the display on & off. I am certainly happy to discover that the power buttons function didn't change just because HTC located it somewhere other than where LG located it!
Seriously, I also have a N5 (with ZERO button issues, rock solid), but I much prefer the HTC button placement. No accidentally turning the device off while just trying to adjust the volume with only a left hand available at the time.

Yeah, I actually prefer the button being in the top. I never really liked the power button on the side.
My hands aren't big either, if anything they're smaller than an average guy.
It just takes a small shift to turn it off with one hand, just being careful you don't press the volume buttons. Which became easy after a couple days of use for me.
