I just got myself a desire and naturally I want to copy all my contacts from MS Outlook to the phone. I downloaded the latest version of HTCSYNC from the HTC website. Installed and kept getting the dreaded Blue screen of Death(BSOD). eventually I managed to roll back the registry and all is stable now. I am running XP SP3 and certainly didn't expect any issues with a mature process such as sync'n contacts. It appears to be related to the HTCSYNC installation but don't know how to get around this. Can anyone please provide any answers or help...
PS I believe there is also a version of HTCSYNC on the SD card that came with the phone...
Any help appreciated. Thanks JD

go to your outlook and export your contacts to a csv file and than login into your gmail and import it there... than just login to your gmail with/in your phone under settings>>account... sync it.. wolaaa u have ur contacts in you phone..
Thanks Harvin23 I appreciate the speedy response I'll get this does as soon as I get a minute as the PC that contains my contacts is a works PC 300+ contacts. I'll export this tonight and then import them into my google account. Do you just connect via wireless to google and do the business you mentioned? Thanks again..john..
I had no end of trouble with HTCSync creating multiple incorrect Calendar entries. After doing some research I got hold of MyPhoneExplorer, and this seems to handle syncing from Outlook really well.
Thanks werdna is this quite a simple tool to use...all i require is something to copy 350 contacts from XP laptop onto Desire flawlessly..preferably with all fields present..job done. I assume you don't need HTC sync for anything else of importance? Thanks JD
Also werdna how do I install the ADB drivers if it is included in HTC sync? is there a way to extract this?
The links are all in german...

MyPhoneExplorer, at its simplest, is - as its name suggests - an app for exploring the contents of your phone, and you can view and edit Contacts, Call lists, Appointments, Alarms, Messages and Files. It's very flexible - for example you can view Messages in threads or by Inbox/Sent/Archive. You can also, very easily, set it to sync Contacts and Appointments with Outlook - and you can view all the changes before accepting them.
I don't fully understand the ADB drivers question. HTC Sync just 'worked' (or not!) straight from the installation - my Desire had a copy on the SD Card, and I later updated to a newer version.
Hope this helps!

Made a stupid mistake and deleted the contacts shortcut in my startup folder. I then loaded softkeys! I now have no way of going back to my contacts on the right softkey. I have looked throughout my windows folder for the pcontacts and I can't find it. I love Black 2.0 and won't go back! Don't want to have to reset for this stupid mistake. Can someone help or post their contacts shortcut here. Thanks!

You can create the link yourself with...
:MSCONTACTS?outres.dll,-10000
and then put the shortcut in any place.
Thanks for the reply....I am still in the dark about your answer....do you mean to place this in the registry or somewhere else. I hate to sound like such a noob.

Contacts won't open!!
I recently upgraded to Black pro 2.0. I love it! However, I used spb backup 1.5.5 to backup my pim info (mainly contacts). Now, when I restore my pim I can no longer open contacts. I tried using the softkey, tried openning it using the phone utility. I tried going back to 2.11 ROM... but the problem persists. I even tried to use other backup programs but still come across the same problem. Other programs that use the contacts database (like Vbirthday) can't access the contacts either. I have Agendus installed and when I go to the contacts in the Agendus menu all my contacts are there, so I think this is a problem in the shell or maybe a registry fix would do the trick... I don't know. I appreciate any help.

Id strongly advise NOT to use spb backup....there are such differences in the new Black ROM that restoring a backup can cause allsorts of problems.
The BEST thing you can do is to get yourself signed up for an exchange account somewhere like mail2web....you get push email but more importantly for you the contacts are synced......so even after a hard reset all it takes is a quick sync and your contacts/calendar/tasks and emails are back in the device.

Thanks for the reply! But I was actually hoping for a way to restore my contacts from my storage card, since I have over 300 contacts it would take me too long to type it all back again. There must be a way to fix this problem. Well... I'll keep trying to find an answer; thanks anyway.

Take the plunge dude once your info is in exchange it is automatically updated if you add or remove a contact etc.....SUCH A SERIOUS TIMESAVER.

Can you export with Agendus and then HR and import?
I'm saying cause seems that restore with SPB Backup dosn't work with contacts in the way it must to do. I try to use in the past, and finally take all my critical information to an exchange server activesync.

Before I upgraded to Black Pro 2.0, SPB backup would work fine even with contacts. I never had any problems with WM5 1.35 ROM. What do you mean by HR? (sorry if this is a stupid question).

HR = Hard Reset
when you say you never had any problem, means that you tested to restore the same backaup before, and this same backup now in Black 2.0 dosn't work?
Or you are trying to restore diferents backups?

Same backup. Won't work in Black 2.0. I did what you suggested (exported a contact from Agendus to my storage card in csv format), HR but can't (don't kknow how to) import it neither with contact nor with Agendus.
Maybe I should just downgrade to WM5 1.35 again. Could anyone tell me how? I tried running the upgrading utility for 1.35 ROM but it doesn't recognize the usb connection. I thought it might be a problem with the SPL 1.40 Olipro and changed to 1.10 Oli... still the same problem. I tried changing it to 1.10 MGF but mtty won't recognize the usb connection either. It's not a problem with my usb port because everything else works fine, including the phone syncronization. Any help is appreciated.

There are same advantages doing with exchange (like i see):
First of all, you can sync in any place, trought GPRS or 3G, so you dosn't need be connected to your PC to restore your information.
Second, the servers normally has their backup policy, so your information is more secure.
Thirt, every time you change one elemment in contacts or calendar, this change sync on the fly to server, so your information is the same in server and in ppc everytime.
After three years of use, this is the most secure method i find to take this information secure and avaylable.

Thanks for the tips. I went back to WM5 1.35, restored my info with SPB backup and it worked. So I syncronized with Outlook, went back to Black 2.0 and syncronized again... contacts and tasks back to my device and working fine. Now I'll see about this exchange mail. By the way... which is the best one? P.S.: could this problem I had be something of interest to Jasjamming? Since Black is his ROM and had some compatibility issues with various backup programs... maybe he would like to have a look at it. Thanks again.
Hi everybody.
I really need your help on this!
After a fresh PC install I synced my phone with Outlook via Mobile Device Center.
Problem is, my Outlook addressbook on my PC was almost empty - and now, all my phones contacts have been deleted!!!
And I don't have a backup of the newes contacts.
I know it is possible to restore deleted information on most storage devices.
Does anybody of you guys have experience on how to possible do that on a WM6 device?
Where does WM6 normally store the data? What software could I use to restore deleted Information?
PLEASE HELP.
Thanks a lot,
t.
You might be out of luck, since it probably didn't delete the PIM file. It only deleted records in the table of that file. Have you sync'd with any other computer? MS Live? etc. Your contacts still may be on the other devices.
Otherwise, I think your outta luck. Sorry
Chris
I had this once and i found back my contacts in MSN in the "deleted contacts". If you haven't synced with MSN, i think you better start to look for some new friends

there isnt any data recovery software for windows mobile trust me ive looked there is software to recover simcard info
http://www.datadoctor.biz/sim-card.html
I had the same problem kinda.. were your contacts on your simcard at anypoint?
If so you could always get a simcard data recovery software and usb thumbdrive for simcards. U need to instal the recoverysoftware on your pc and to get you simcard to recognise on your pc thats were the thumbdrive come into play.
This happened to me when I switched to Vista, totally unexplained loss of all contacts. I feel for you man, I was lucky and had most of them backed up on an online service.
thx for all your replies guys - managed to restore most of my older contacts - but the newer ones seem to be lost - dammit.
well, lets move on
I use the PIM backup to backup my contacts/sms's/recently called lists.. I set it to back my things every day and to keep 3 recent backups. I keep my backup files in storage card so if I have to do a hard reset -ill get my contacts etc. back without computer. Thisway I avoided similar problem(just had to restore the backup with PIM backup).
PIM Backup is the best choice. Synchronization with Outlook only is dangerous - have bad experience too...
Hi
Check your deleted items in outlook on your pc. I have sometimes found activesync deletes items from my phone but they go into the outlook deleted items.
Shaks
I recently upgraded from XP to Vista and the same thing happened. I didn't back anything up either. I got lucky though, my old files from xp were saved in a folder called windows.old, went in there and found my .pst file(outlook) and placed it in the vista outlook folder and got everything back...now I backup with PIM Backup daily.
Seeing that there is a "How do you transfer details from winmo to andoid" thread, i guess i need to make this too, as i am using a samsung "smartphone" lol, using the symbian s60 3rd edn......
so how do i transfer details from symbian to android?
I don't know symbian... maybe you can use this too:
http://www.spritesoftware.com/Products/Migrate/Migrate-Your-Data-Now/How-To-Transfer
I do have symbian, also S60 3rd edition, nokia E75.
dont think there is an easy "free" way, ... pics, music, videos, move them from your phone to your PC, .... than from PC to your android SD Card.
the contacts, ... save to SIM and then move the SIM to Android and copy the contacts from the SIM. also you can transfer messages the same way (if you have a decent SIM card anyway )
I dont have critical birthday's, calenders, ... etc. so the contact names and numbers (+media) are enough for me, and thats way to do it

Will post again if step 3 works once T mobile send me my Desire tomorrow.

what if my desire is locked to t-mobile and my previous phone - symbian s60 3rd was on o2, will i still be able to transfer the contacts from my o2 card? or it wont even get accepted?
you can sync your contacts with ovi suite and then sync them into outlook where you can create a csv file to import your contacts into gmail. and then when you setup your gmail on your desire all your contacts will be copied!
I have come from a Nokia E71. Gladly, as the OS was really beginning to irritate me.
The way I can suggest is to sync you phone with Outlook, and then sync Outlook with Gmail (if you have one) and then down to your Android device.
Caveats:
1. Outlook to Gmail can often involve some pruning as some contacts don't get synced in the way you may want.
2. I'm assuming you have software that syncs to Outlook. I don't know what software you have so I don't know.
This method should be free, fairly automated, and not very painful.

Yes it will work, .. because this thing is 3 programs
1. SISX application (Symbian)
2. Desktop Application
3. APK application (Android)
you install the SISX in your Symbian, ... you use that application to back up contacts, SMSes, and bookmarks, it will create one file ".SMF"..
you transfer that ".SMF" file to your PC, .. and then you use your Desktop application to convert that ".SMF" file to another ".SMF" file that is compatible with android, than you transfer the resulted, converted .SMF file to android, ... than you use the APK application to extract the info from that .SMF and thats it
however the APK file i downloaded from their main site seems expired, cant complete the last step

i have just tried this app and yes it does let you import the contacts, however it imports them as gmail contacts and somehow none of them has phone numbers and it is impossible to add one to any of the contacts
just tried to export them using nokia pc suit into a csv file then load it up onto gmail acc and then sync with the phone and again, it works but the numbers dont appear grrr
can anybody try if it also works like this for them, as i dont really wanna do another factory reset
/e ok just checked on another desire and it works fine there... :S grr
/e2 lol ok after restarting the phone it works now :O
cant get it to work, got error when converting it using the pc software after getting the smf file from my symbian....
it does create a new smf after converting but i cant use it on my android....
what did i do wrong?
There is another easier way to tranfer your contacts from symbian to android...
First of all you have to go to contacts on symbian and select mark → mark all...
Then you choose to send them via bluetooth...
It sends them one by one (...you 'll see it during the proccess)
When you have finished, go to your android device into your "bluetooth received" folder.....
Select one by one contact to save it on your android phone.........
I think it's an easy way to transfer your contacts if they are not many because you must save them one by one....
Well, the way I did it coming from a n95 (which has a microsd slot) was to select all contacts on the n95 in the phonebook > select "copy to memory card" > insert the card to your desire and in the people app choose menu > import from memory card. Voilà, all done!
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
I transferred my contacts to Google using syncML, but that was from a Nokia N97... not sure if the Samsung Symbians support syncML...

Hello

By the way, I've migrated from Windows mobile 6.5 to Android.
Migration successful !
Hi,
I've saved all the content (including contacts) on the SD card and then I've imported them on the new phone.
I know it's dreadfully premature, but wondering if there's any news of getting a PC to even see our TP2's with Android?
...and if not sync, is there a workaround to mount it as a drive to throw files onto it?
I did a search, been on all the forums...Hoping I'm not missing something.
Thanks!
Im running ubuntu on my pc and I can see the sd card only while in Android. If you just need to sync contacts check the android wiki in my sig

Nope. Contacts I got. Export .csv(windows) import to Google. Pretty easy.
I'm doing...a few things needing to drag files, I'd love to save settings / backup / files, etc. to desktop as I continue to break Android... a lot...to get things working better...
As it is, I have everything that is supposed to work, working. I'd love to make it easier on myself...
No complaints, but it's be easier to help if I didn't have to go back so many steps each time...

First of all i think your thread is removed soon...
If you're on 4.0 or 4.1 you can save contacts just press menu button and they're on your sd card and if you need them again its just to import them.
And you can sync them with Google.
So if you're on 4.0-4.1 you need to manually write down your contacts on your phone then save them. :good:
I also had this problem when I moved to 4.0...
What I did was:
- In Kies, export my saved contacts do VCF (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25029961&postcount=5 )
- After this, I imported the contacts to Outlook.
- Downloaded this: http://sourceforge.net/projects/googlesyncmod/
- Used this program to sync betwwen Outlook and Gmail...
If you have your contacts in Gmail, you never have to worry about this again...
the dev section is always the right place to post everything anywhere !
Just make all your contacts Google/Gmail (therefore synced) before flashing (check them online to be sure), then they will be synced back as soon as you associate your new ROM with your Google account.
You'll never need to worry about syncing or losing contacts again.
Simples
