Hi all,
My light sensor appears to be broken on my phone, I put it to my ear when making a call but when i return the screen is still black.
The screen does not return to normal till the other person hangs up (anserwing mchines are giving me the rage lol)
Does anyone know how to fix it? or just turn that function off? Not sure why its suddenly broken.
cheers for your help
yes go to settings and screen disable auto light
Could be an issue of your Rom...
you can check if it is actually broken with this app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=951858&highlight=proximity+recalibrator
Take a vacuum cleaner and vacuum on the top left of your screen, around the screen seal, small dust particles can get in there and affect the light sensor. It worked for me... give it a shot!

thank you, that fixed it
Anyone know?
Left of the HTC logo above the screen. It is also where the proximity sensor is.
If you call someone, take a look at the front of your phone. You will see a steady red glow from the top left of your screen, this is where the proximity and ambient light sensor are housed.
It helps if you angle the phone, you can see that there is almost like a rectangle hole in the paint behind the glass

If you want to easily see it, enable Face Unlock, then try to unlock your phone in complete darkness, you will see that little red light comes on to the left of HTC logo.
That light seems to be permanently on after I had a viber call. Any ways to turn it off
Edit.: the cause was NotifierPro. Fixed it.

Dear Sir!
Do you mean the sensor activated during a phone call? My HTC one X last time has an abnormal behavior when I place a phone call. Normally when you move the phone away of hear it should turn on the screen back light so you are able to hang up the phone call. But my phone still be black after moving away from the hear so I need to push power button to activate the screen back-light and than hang up the phone call. Could somebody help me out on this issue? Any kind of help shall be much appreciated.
Best regards
Fredi
I’ve got one question. I’m the owner of HTC One X and I’ve noticed little red dot which is lightning all the time only when I’m talking on the phone with someone. Do you got the same?
The red dot is next to Proximity sensor but more to the left. I’ve took some pictures of that dot (in picture it looks like blue but in fact it’s red). Any ideas of what it could be?

It's the proximity sensor and no problem it's the same for all of us
Hi, it's the proximity sensor that will turn the backlight off when you're in a phone call.
Yep. This is the proximity sensor. It senses whether you're holding your phone close to your ear or away to determine whether to partially lock the screen or not.
If you are experiencing problems with the sensor, download an app called Elixir 2, tap sensors, scroll down to proximity sensor and start the test. Move your hand towards and away from the red light and make sure the graph which comes up recognises these changes

Viber is a free messaging and calls app... try closing some of your apps, via process of elimination you'll probably find the culprit.
I did the same with viber, but it was soon fixed via an app update
you people worry too much
Thank you. As hadmin said I was worried about that dot but I see that there is nothing to worry about. Thanks again.
I recently bought a new samsung galaxy note 2 and it was working all fine till the 2nd day of use in hands, suddenly i found one of the two sensors beside the camera showing a dim red light continuously, thats probably the Proximity sensor, I tried killing applications, but not worked, restarted phone and the light vanished...
Later on i noticed, the dim red light showing up whenever i opened any logs or messages, also the light stays on when the Quick Glance feature is on, i tried turning off the Direct Call and Quick Glance feature again that red light vanished...
i've searched alot about this problem, many people having it on Samsung Galaxy S 3, some have resolved by uninstalling viber, but i don't even have viber...
the light was not showing up before, but it came suddenly...
anyone having the same issue ? or anyone who has resolved such issue...
thanks alot in adv. for the responses
I don't see the problem? It's Just the proximity sensor working. ..

Quick Glance uses the proximity sensor when the screen is off to tell when you're passing your hand over the phone to activate the feature.
I think Quick Call uses it to tell when you've moved the phone to your ear to dial the contact automatically.
Basically, it's normal depending on which features you have enabled/disabled.

Well..infrared light is invisible and cannot be seen.
That's why we cannot see any light coming out of the TV remotes even though they use infrared.

LOL I don't know how "infra" this particular red is, but there are known cases of people having been able to see near ultraviolet... So, maybe OP is just one very special person...?

If u use another cam to take a shot of the sensor or any other infrared led as tv remotes,u will for sure see the light, just try it.

Dim red light galaxy note 2
Hi there just been reading over this thread and only found it as I was having the same issue. Had a gs3 before this and I'm sure that had the same layout at the top of the handset an I never seen a red light appear on that in the 3 months I had it!. Noticed about 4 days ago this dim red light on my gn2 but just left it alone thinking similar to already mentioned reasons here like proximity sensor working but past 24hrs it just hasn't went off when before I was never there so why?. I turned phone off then back on again and now no red light and I've been using it for a few hours now so I don't think its just the proximity sensor working. When booting into recovery this same light appears for a split second before gn2 boot screen Sonoma thinking there might be some sort of bug when it stays on all the time so hopefully somebody will put our minds at ease with a solution

If you bothered to read the replies, it's normal. The proximity sensor stays on when your screen is turned off and lying on a flat surface because of the quick glance feature.
The proximity sensor turns on too when you are in the address book or call app and also the messaging app because of the quick call feature.
It's not a bug, just leave it alone and let it be.

I did read the replies and I don't hav the quick glance feature enabled. I'm telling you that on MY phone at least this red light has not appeared again since turning my phone off then on again and has only been present in the last 2 to 4 days intermittently and whether that be through flashing rom (omega) or not there's is still no concrete answer because I am using my phone now as I have been since the day I got it with the same motion settings an same settings throughout so if your so sure you know why this red light stays on constantly can you tell me why over a 2 to 3 week period it has only been present on my phone intermittently for a couple of days?

Edit: just received a text and on wakening the screen red light came on again so proximity explanation would be right because it went off again once I replied and locked the phone. This still doesn't explain why it was on constantly for 2 to 4 days with all my settings as they hav always beenand using my phone even as i am now!. Its just really bugging me I hate no knowing for definite but still appreciate your reply
I also have this bug/feature. On my phone the little dim red light works as described, when in messaging it lights up in case I put the phone to my head "Quick Call" feature is turned on. HOWEVER once in awhile this light will remain on constantly. Yes phone is locked and laying on its back. The "Quick Glance" feature is NOT on, "Turn over to mute/pause" is NOT on, "Smart Stay" is NOT on.
After a couple of days, the dim red light will just stay on. If I reboot the phone, it then shuts off and comes on only when messaging as expected, considering my settings. Again after a couple of days I will notice that it is on all the time again.

I got the same problem... And its draining my battery like hell....
I don't use any motion or anything that use prox sensor... so?
faulty prox or soft bug?
As I was trying to tell princeherman up there, its not just 'a feature' there's a problem with it and whether that through being on a custom rom or not I'm not sure but it certainly doesn't behave consistently with or without motion settings activated as it turns out because we have posts here saying they have them all disabled!. I think I've only had it happen once since my past post about it weeks ago but I've also updated omega rom many times since then as well as trying the odd different rom so it could've been any of them as I just rebooted to rectify it without giving it much thought. Strange though!,wonder if someone el get a definite explanation?
Im also having this problem came here for help im stock but rooted
Today I noticed a dimly lit red light from the second dot to the left of the front camera staying continuously on even when the display is turned off. I am not mentioning about the notification light that is placed to the left side. I tried many options but it stayed dimly lit. Later I thought of restarting the device and that did turn it off. This did show up as bright red for a moment when I turned on the device which later turned off.
Any idea what made it stay continuously on?

I was having similar problem with gs3,turned out to be viber I guess...uninstall it and report again.
I don't have the viber app installed. By the way what is this led called and what is its function?
Thanks
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
If its not the proper led then it must be proximity sensor(uses infrared light to detect proximity)
Normally turns on when u get a call to turn of screen when u hold close to your face.if its not viber then it might be what's app or Skype god knows what(may be try freezing phone apps one by one and find out for yourself)
Its not a bug or anything. Its meant to stay lit this way because its a proximity sensor.
turn off smart stay and anything else you might not need and it will go away
turn this off by go - Setting>Motion> Quick Glance: untick :good:
As I said it went off by restarting. I don't have the problem now to check any solution. Just was curious to know what was it.
While it was on, it stayed on even during the call or even when the display was turned off. I did not have any motion setting enabled.
Thanks everyone for your kind replies. I will see if I get the problem again
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
I noticed that too, then I realized what was causing this. It's the Quick Glance function on "Motion" that's triggering this, because while the screen is off the phone's proximity sensor checks whether or not you have your hand in front of the screen for activating Quick Glance. In order to do that, the sensor must continously stay on, hence the continous red light.
