I currently have journaling disabled, but I'm experiencing some data corruption that might be related, so I'd like to turn it back on, using tune2fs I guess.
Has anyone done this successfully without reflashing?
Thanks!
Its not a good idea but if uoi want an answer just do a backup in cwm and then restore from that backup and it enables journaling.

So tired of having to reflash after dropping my phone or whatever. Gives me force closes on evvvverything each time I do it. Totally sucks the benefits of disabling journaling definitely do not outweigh the negatives.
cd's or tapes?
What gives you better performance? Journaling or not?
Journaling = more data writes = less performance
Exactly- its better for your phone to have journaling disabled.

Until you have an unexpected shut down and data corruption.
Even if you turn it back on using tunefs it will require a format.. just like when you turn it off it requires a format.. but formatting alone turns it back on, so just back up and format then restore and its back on...

My girlfriend has this disabled on her epic and she says her internet sucks. Does journaling have anything to do with this?

I would prefer to have journaling enabled. I don't think the speed difference is worth the extra exposure to data corruption. Especially when I have a tendancy to drop my phone and have the battery pop out, or forget to dismount the drive when uplugging from the computer .
Is there an easy way to check to see if journaling is enabled (or disabled) on your phone? I am willing to try formatting the card, but I would like to be able to verify the results.
if your worried about data corruption just do what I do.
Set titnaum backup to automatically back everything up at 3am(choose the time best for you). If you ever suffer from corruption just restore data from the night before

Open a terminal and run the following commands:
su -c ash
mount | grep ext4
(note the names of the devices /dev/block/stl**)
tune2fs -l /dev/block/stl** | grep features
(If a journal is present it will say "has_journal")
I'm with you that a journal should always be used. For better performance data writeback mode can be enabled using tune2fs but with a greater risk of data loss.

Which data to format? In CWM there is:
boot
system
data
cache
sdcard
sd-ext
I am thinking it should be just format, boot, system, data, and cache, correct?

Worked for me.
No journaling is a bad idea on a PC, I don't see how a phone would be different... the microseconds that you gain by turning it off isn't worth it.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Exactly. Apparently mysteryemotionz has the perfect epic that never random reboots. This is the only thing keeping me from using some of the better ext4 only roms like Bonsai. Even when I shut my phone down properly, upon reboot everything is corrupted. I don't want to have another app running that I dont need to just because somebody thought it was a good idea for us to let our phones rape themselves just to save CPU cycles.

CM 7 with SZ, sometimes the screen does not turn on so I have to battery pull. When I start it up again, CM 7 says I have a damaged sd card that needs to be formatted. I have a lot of data on it (its a 32 gb card). So I ignore it. But sometimes I can see it if I try to mount it. Sometimes the camera does not recognize it, but Root Explorer will. Sometimes it says blank sd card. Always different.
Any way to fix it without deleting all data?

I could be mistaken, but I could've sworn that is a bug in CM7 that affects a few people. I believe the card is actually fine, and its a bug in the rom.

Try reflashing the Rom and kernel, and/or save your data to your computer and format the card then put your data back on your sd card

Hello everyone... I come to you with a rather annoying problem. I am running Calkulin's latest GB rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837 and it happens at the lock screen. My phone's screen will be off and then every so often it'll randomly turn on. It doesn't do it constantly, but enough to be obnoxious. Does anyone else have this issue? I use WidgetLocker Lockscreen (paid for), but it does it with the standard lockscreen as well.
Thanks in advance!
Try uninstalling widget locker and see if the problem is still present? It could also be a setting in widget locker!

I uninstalled WidgetLocker and rebooted my phone and it hasn't done it just yet, so we'll see how it goes. Thanks. Too bad though, I like that program D:
Edit: It's doing it again without WidgetLocker :\
Try wiping cache & davlik. If that doesn't work, then try fix permissions in recovery too.
Edit: Could be an app waking the phone too. Have you tried turning off sync or freezing apps yet?

Not yet, I'll give that a shot if the wiping cache, davlik, and fixing permissions doesn't work. Here's hoping! I have titanium backup pro so I can freeze apps... I know a few things sync like google calendar.

It might be overkill, but you could just back up texts, calls, and apps, then reflash your rom or try another. Just do a fresh install, don't restore data with your apps. It might be the quickest means to an end. Also, if it does it on multiple roms, it's possibly an issue with the power button. Give her a squirt of canned air before you go running off to the sprint store. Good luck!

Most of the rom developers will implement ad blocking in their rom build. I know for a fact that Calkulins' use it. So you don't need to install anything else.
Sometimes they list that info on their OP.

Hi everyone,
I just updated to JB and noticed that Media server (66% usage) has been keeping my phone awake for the entire time (4 hours). Is there any fix to this? It's running hot and draining 10% per hour (and it's been idle).
Disable it? uninstall [root]?

It's always recommended you so a factory reset after any update. That should fix it.
The thing is though, I wiped everything, installed the update using ODIN, wiped that and then flashed the Black Jellybean rom. :/
Look at whsts under media server in batt stats.
Go in app manager and clear data for each one. Reboot and give it at least 5 min to rebuild library.
Prob need to clear data for these

What version of what kernel does this issue occur on? In October, the CM10 builds had issues with media server drain that coincided with kernel commits. 3.0.46 or 47 i think had those issues.
I assume its the official JB update, not a custom rom.

I've been having this issue for a while now on Frosty. I tried what Doc mentioned earlier, but it doesn't seem to work after restarting my phone. The only way I can stop it from draining is to go into battery and stopping the process.

If that didnt help, the next step is to factory reset and reflash.
If that doesn't work then itll be something on your sdcard causing it to hang/wig out.
It may be a corrupt media file, or just something on there it thinks is media and when it attempts to load its info into library it screws up. Im just guessing at this part, but if you do a complete clean install, all thats left is your sd data.
Youd need to backup, and reformat the sdcard most likely.

This wont help in my experience. I intentionally reflashed everything last night and left my sd card out, and it still does it
I've done tons and tons of experimenting with this issue over the past 24-48 hours and I was able to come up with a solution that worked for me. I examined the external.db file which is located in /data/data/com.android.providers.media/ and noticed that it scans all files on internal SD and Micro SD right after each reboot. I had a 1.6gb titanium backup folder on the Micro SD which was taking the scanner a lot of time to get through so I copied that to the PC and deleted it from my phone.
I also got rid of a whole bunch of other unneeded files like roms that were just sitting around taking up space. So now instead of my phone running max CPU utilization for 10-15 minutes after reboot, it only does it for about 1-2 minutes and settles down.
Thats normal behavior for it. Naturally the more data you have the longer it takes to scan. 10-25mins is longer tgsn I believe it hss to be, but the issue a lot if people are having is this process will continuously run forever! Causing 10-15% power drops in less than an hour!
All I know for certain is the couple of suggestions I posted in here have worked for others ive helped in the past, the first one I mentioned seems to work most often and has worked a few times for me. Obviously they dont always work for everyone. I just wish we could figure out the exact cause!

I FOUND A FIX! Apparently, I had 300 mp3s that needed fixing so I ran a program "Mp3 Scan + Repair", fixed all my mp3s and put it back on my sd card. Also, I removed all m4as and converted them into mp3s. This was a suggestion for how to handle mediaserver issues from ICS so I was surprised it worked for JB

Awesome dude. I also read somewhere that the CFQ I/O scheduler has more of an issue w/ media scanner than others. I'm not sure how true that is, but lately I've been running 2ghz as max speed w/ SIO for I/O Scheduler & interactive governor along w/ the other things I've done and I get less than 1 minute of CPU trashing after each reboot. I will have to try that program though to see if it can get me down to zero.

yes, i have one, don't waste your time with them. let your RAM disk do clean up for you. your phone is fast enough that you should need a task killer. task killers are soooo two years ago
but in all seriousness, you don't need one bud. just use your device it will be fine without one :good:
Well when I used to have on it would say it killed 35 apps or so everytime I pressed it. I should just do nothing?
My ultimate goal was to cut down on battery usage by not letting them run???

you'll be alright without it man, trust me. i haven't used a task killer since i had my samsung moment and never needed one. battery life is great on this thing, and performance with be there.
Leave it alone. Search on Google you'll find detailed reasons why task killers are useless, even harmful if not used with caution. Android is smart enough to do it on its own.

But what I actually love and use, is startup manager. It allows you to choose which programs run at boot. You just have to be rooted. It cut my boot time in half and saves a lot of resources by not having random things running that you don't need. And I don't notice a difference in the time it takes to open those disabled programs either.

Cache cleaner NG is the best one. Just don't use the "old cleaning method" because it will hang on you. I also like this app because you can set time intervals on the clean up process. I always have mine run late at night when I'm sleeping. Just wake up with a notification to clear with details on how much it cleaned up
And IMO disabling apps is a waste of time. I prefer just going in and deleting them manually and wiping dalvik cache because it frees up storage space in your system and data directory. Just a cleaner way to do it I think. But either way works.

But for things i do use but dont want running (ie Spare phone, youtube, google voice, tapatalk) i remove from being started at boot and then they dont run until i run them and i always completely exit them when done.

I had a similar issue with one of my phones.. It ended up being a defective phone, and this was after it was rooted.. My wife's phone also rooted never had a issue.. If you feel it is defective after trying the above, flash back to full stock, and return it. Tell Sprint you are invoking your Samsung Warranty.. Sprint will always try to get you to use your insurance, which is bullpoop..
Phone is outside the return period so either it gets replaced by samsung or Sprint
