Custom ROMs - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When rooting and flashing custom roms, is there any roms which makes your phone work just the same way as it did before? I mean, does all the roms have support for camera(pictures and filming movies), sync (facebook, twitter, email), and so on?
Will I be able to use my phone as I did with the stock rom I guess the question is.
Getting more and more tempted...

yes of course, especially if you want to use back HTC sense, then flash the sense-based rom.
Android Revolution HD is recommended by me

The first answer I have... is you want exactly the same phone you have... keep your rom
Normally in most of the build thread the dev list what is working and what is not.
So read the first post you'll know.
Take also into account (and do it anyway) that you better backup your staff before testing any build. CWM give you the ability to backup everything. That's great for testing new builds.
General advice: never trust an electronic device!!!! Backup is the rule. One day or another you will loose your data (wrong manipulation, memory corruption...).

I've read more about it now and found a genius guide in sweedish (I'm norwegian so that's pretty close, haha) and now I'm quite sure I will have to give RHD a go.
But what about the phone's language? All over I mean, in the menus and everything. Will I get a english phone after flashing custom ROM's, or can I just change the language settings ... ?

Most (if not all) roms based on WWE stock roms have european languages. (At least swedish and norwegian)
peace!

The rom you were thinking of trying definitely has norwegian. Tried it a few days ago with swedish.

Great I can't sit on my hands anymore... *jumps into it* Wish me luck! I hope everything goes the way it's supposed to. I've used Visionary and Titanium Backup to freeze some apps, but that is as far as I've gone... But seems like that wasn't quite enough, if I can get more benefits out of the great phone, I want them
Will the facebook/gmail sync work with RHD? It doesnt say anything about it in the thread. What about the themes for the ROM? They wont override any language-settings or what?

Done! Now I will have to seriously clean up my SD card, as I did double backups of everything, including the stock rom, nandroid backup(?), app, system/settings backup in titanium backup. And I have to check if I will have to install a new radio.
I did. *installs new radio*

What is the best rom to go on vacation with, the most reliable one? i normally use vanilla roms but dont know which one is the best for a vacation of 5 weeks without flashing
other question: is it possible to flash a rom without a sim card?
last question: how to turn off the 3g signal so i can use my mobile but not lose much cash?
Thank you for reading and an answer,
Gertjan
Just use the latest villain based upon the official 2.1 release. Very stable battery maybe a cons....
Going on vacation also and i hope that Stickman is going to release a new version of sensehero before I go.
Just must turn data roaming off so it will not be able to connect for data.

All of the current ROMs are stable and can handle 5 weeks without any update.
IMHO, you could choose between a Sense Rom (VillainROM, Cronos or Chocolate Eclair) or Vanilla only (Vanilla Eclair or Cyanogen Mod).
If you want to know how those ROMs perform check these two threads:
> [Benchmark] CPU Performance across ROMs
> [Benchmark] 3D/OpenGL performance across ROMs
Regarding the SIM card, you don't need one in order to flash.
Also, next time don't post in the development section. Q&A is the place to go.
Have a nice holidays.
Could a moderator change this one to Q&A please...

My benchmarks don't cover what works and what doesn't in each ROM.
Pick a ROM, go to its own thread, read the full description. Read the thread, for complaints, FC's and possible fixes.
If you think that ROM suits you, flash it. As simple as that.
Also, looking at the graph and reading the "Lower/Higher is Better", aHero is obviously not the fastest. But it doesn't mean it's not good/awesome.
Take them all on your sd card and if your addiction is coming back flash a rom !!!
Seriously I loved the last Sensehero but there is a lack of support so I changed to VR 12 and it's fun. I don't know vanilla roms so I can't really help you.. I tried SuperHero 1 and it was good but it seems that version 2 is not as good as superhero 1

Yeah, but each time he/she flashes a ROM, he/she must install the applications again. And he/she needs a PC to be able to do it.
> Supposing he/she will not take his/her PC along in the vacations.
MoDaCo's is the least altered whilst still optimized compared to the official ROM. That is, it's most likely to be stable without much slowdown. Also doesn't come filled to the brim with bloat, unlike VillainROM's recent tendency (and to think I donated )
modaco or play safe with kimera 1.5 or mr bang 1.5.

With Titanium Backup (donator version is better) and SMS Backup and Restore you don't need a PC anymore !
You just need to save your apps on your card and also your sms and thats all !

Thanks for all replies...
In fact, I read the forum for the whole day and what I have found so far is that all touch pro 2 android 2.2 ROM did not fix all problem yet. Therefore, I am asking for any ROM that works for all function even 2.1 ROM.
As far as I know, HD2 has launched the 2.2. ROM with all function working, don't know if that ROM can be applied on Touch Pro 2?
Thank you

The ROM itself has no impact on hardware functions working, and those are all kernel issues. It doesn't matter if you put the same 2.2 HD2 ROM on your phone (which is easy to do) the TP2 kernel is more advanced than the HD2, and therefore further behind.
I have android running on my TP2 (verizon). Its nice to have both OS's on 1 phone, but its still very unstable, no sound, gps, cam, bluetooth, screen goes black 1 out of 3 times, phone still Lags. Im pretty sure these guys will get it right in a near future, so big ups for them!

If you would read a little bit you would find out this doesn't even install to your internal memory(NAND), it installs to your SD card, hence why you can dual boot......

Well a quick tip is don't read the HD2 forum for a TP2.
There are people that use this with stock ROM/Radio just fine.
Many thanks....Im playing around with the Andriod ROM with my TP2 now....quite fun
Hope that the final version is coming soon~~
Is there any such thing as a "final version"?
Questions and concerns have been clarified so closing thread.

[request]Searching a HowTo for Skinning Swype

Hi,
Today my Defy arrived
Now I have read many threads about the phone and the firmware, but soneones making me confused and other ones doesnt answer my questtions.
So, what I want to know is:
1. Wich is the really latest firmware for the Defy with the red lense? Done
2. when Im going to install CM7, must be flashed an stock froyo rom before? Done
3. because swype is preinstalled in the firmware, how can i update it to the latest version? Done
4. how can i make my own swype theme?
I think thats all (for now )
Greetings
I'll only answer to the ones that I know the answer...
2. The instructions say that you should. Also, from what I read, every tutorial says that you should go to stock. Also, a wipe could be advisable (not to inherit problems and bad settings from the previous ROM)
3. You can get it from the official site. As far as I've noticed CM7 doesn't come with Swype.
Hopefully someone else answers the other two questions.
Have a nice day!
And I'll take the opportunity to ask a few somewhat related noobie questions:

I've seen a few mentions of different lens colours. What is this? (link to explanation is fine) ETA: Found it myself. Really stupid to ask. Bottom line ATM seems to be that for phones recently manufactured the lens colour is not a reliable indicator of camera module used.

Doesn't this mean that you don't need to do anything special (maybe wipe everything, but maybe not that important?) when you flash a new ROM into the phone for the first time?
Or would you still need to first flash a plain stock ROM if your phone came with some telco-provided crappy stuff in the ROM, before flashing a custom ROM?
(Purely hypothetical question for me.)
Bumping this, because I am getting to closer to actually start rooting around (hah!) in the innards of my phone, and I keep wondering about this:

So do I need to flash _another_ stock ROM before I switch to cyanogen or whatever, if my phone is a virgin that came with the stock nordic rom (moto_version.34.177.5.MB525.retail.en.ND/jorem_U3_3.4.2_177-5)?
It somehow seems redundant to me to flash another stock to my phone when I already have a stock froyo (without blur even) on it.
BTW, given the focus of this forum you are all being very very kind to us noobs. Upthread I asked a really really really stupid question (I'll see if I can edit out), and nobody threw rocks at me .
I am still wondering though whether anyone can recommend an alternative forum more suited to Really Basic Questions?
Just root, install second init for recovery, then flash cyanogen...
If you click devices at their website, you can grab the latest nightly ROM, and you will also find the wiki, which has a step by step on how to do everything.
It's really simple, just keep glued too the instructions.
Good luck

It is recommended as a precaution for a failsafe install but you can install CM7 on any stock 2.2 or above rom.

BTW, it would be good if you'd change the topic back, or put the old topic in parenthesis to the new one or something. Something like

might be good
I was wondering why I was subscribed to a thread about swype-skinning, as it couldn't be further from my interests, but never mind that - there's good info in this thread not related to swype.

Exactly. I was confused, and for an instant, lost in space.. Lol
You big thread hooligan, Mr gentleman
Edit:
To answer your question,
You should probably check with Swype to see if skinning is even capable with their app... (or potentially even allowed)
To my knowledge, skinning Swype is uncharted territory...the app is in beta still.
Some advanced knowledge of Android would be required to hack, disassemble, and recompile any themes for it.

[Q] Wants to build a ROM, directions please?

Hey all! I just want something to do in my free time and to get something for us Locked Verizon users. I just want to build off of the Cola ROM, kinda like how the guy who made IT-ROM did (Sorry for not remembering your name!)
My first guess would be to set everything up from the fresh Cola rom with a blank SD card mounted while on airplane mode, then make a Nandroid when ready, but there's also one thing I would like to ask along those lines.
What would I do with apps to replace stock vanilla apps, I found some stock MIUI apps that work outside of MIUI itself. Would I just replace them on Root Explorer or anything similar then reboot? I just want to keep things clean instead of having multiple similar apps.
This is going to be quite a slick looking ROM you guys, I promise.
P.S. Does anybody know of a good clone, or even a port of the MIUI Messaging app? There was one called exMessenger from the developers of exDialer, but it was suddenly abandoned, which was going to be a part of my ROM.
EDIT: I also just want to mention, it's not meant to be an MiUI look-alike, MiUI just has a really sleek look to it which is what I'm aiming for, not a clone.

Newbie Doubt

Hi guys, I have a HTC M8 AT&T (Actually version. Android: 5.0.2 | Software: 4.28.502.1) bought in the United States but use in Brazil, but it is not possible to automatically update and I always down by the site the latest version. I always wanted to modify the phone but was always afraid of not liking too. But now I'm trying to change and unlock it.
I have some doubts about the ROM.
- Everything works the same as the original?
- It will take some bug during use?
- Can I have the visual theme of the original?
- If I want to go back to the original, it is possible?
I apologize for the questions, but it is something I want to solve.
I read a lot here, see topics ROMS but always have some doubts, I see a lot of people talking about problems, etc.
Thank you all.
My responses below in red font:
diigodr said:
I have some doubts about the ROM. What ROM(s) are you considering? If you don't specify, it makes all your following questions too vague to possibly answer!
- Everything works the same as the original? Too vague to know what you are asking about. What specific features are you concerned about? The basic functionality (what you can do with the phone) will be the similar or same; but obviously there will be some differences, otherwise why install the ROM at all? In fact, many custom ROMs will be "better" than stock in many ways (which is the main point). For instance, performance tweaks, removed bloatware, and most will remove AT&T's limitation on being able to use WiFi hotspot (tethering).
- It will take some bug during use? Its possible to have bugs. But the official stock ROMs have bugs, too. ROMs based on HTC baseline ROMs (Sense or GPE) are typically very stable, and with very few bugs (are if any, they are very minor). More on "bugs" below.
- Can I have the visual theme of the original? It depend on what ROM you are talking about. It will typically state in the ROM threads if it has been themed, if it has tools built-in to change the theme, etc.
- If I want to go back to the original, it is possible? Of course. In fact, you can and should make a TWRP (custom recovery) backup of the stock ROM before you flash any custom ROMs, in case you want to revert to stock(as doing a TWRP backup makes it much easier to revert).
I read a lot here, see topics ROMS but always have some doubts, I see a lot of people talking about problems, etc. Again, too vague to know what you are referring to. Sometimes "bugs" are due to user error, such as having outdated firmware, not doing proper wipes before flashing, etc.
Whether to flash a custom ROM is a good idea for you as an individual, is a very personal choice. It depends on what you hope to obtain, which you really haven't mentioned at all. But custom ROMs are obviously worthwhile to a large number of folks. Otherwise, XDA wouldn't exist in the first place.
