So lately I have been having problems with my Epic. I was previously running Nebula rom, but it would always restart randomly and one time it would restart endlessly until I took it home and returned it to stock. I tried Nebula 1.0.7 again but same quirky problem. Now Iv been running the latest release of the ViperRom, but today it did the same restart thing, where all of the sudden the booting animation would come up and my phone would be restarted.
And now my messages have been acting funny. I run Handcent as my SMS app. I noticed the message pop ups would get to my phone, and then in 10 or so seconds it would vibrate and the app would recognize it had a message. Sometimes i could send a message through the pop-up and then when I went into the main part of Handcent, my message would be sent before the message i replied to, And sending messages takes forever now. I seem to be able to remedy this for a short time by going into CWM and fixing permissions, but its a very temporary fix.
Sorry for the long read, but this is making me mad. Any input is appreciated.
If this is in the wrong section, just let me know and Ill move it.
Some others, including myself, have reported similar problems when upgrading to EB13. For me, about 30 minutes into the phone being on, my cpu load would jump to 100% load (check yours with an app such as Process Monitor Widget). When my cpu was at 100%, the phone itself would run fine, but it seemed as if priority was given to everything BUT data apps such as the browser and GO SMS (the messenger app I use). I got the same popup/message problems and sending messages sometimes took minutes.
If you're in the browser, type in a website, and it hangs, hit home and then go back into the browser. I found that the data transfer would kick in and load my webpage after going back into the browser. In my case this worked only when I hit home to exit the browser, rather than hitting back to close the browser.
Let me know if any of this information helps. And if you are having a similar issue, this thread may help a bit.
midNight 4.1
I have been running midNight ROM 4.1 EB13 w/EXT4.
I have no issues at all and overall this ROM series has been rock solid. I tried a couple and read for weeks before settling in on that 1 ROM.
It is super easy to get up and running with it.
Just my 2 cents <grin>

Has anyone noticed the stock Messages app has some glitches in it now. Specifically, I've found 2:
1. If I'm typing a text, about 50% of the time, the screen will suddenly jump to the very top of the conversation list. This also removes the window you are typing in and stops you typing. So if you have around 200 messages in that particular conversation, it can be quite irritating to have to start flicking back down to continue.
2. This one is less frequent but I'm now sure it exists. When I tap on a particular conversation from the main list, occasionally I get taken to a completely different name/conversation. I used to go back to the main list to see if I mis-tapped, but the conversation it went to wasn't even close.
I've now gone to Handcent because of the irritation, but I'm wondering if it was only me that saw this?
i have the first problem too... very frustrating but i like the stock sms application because its so simple... tried chomp sms and handset 2 months ago and went back to stock app because i couldnt search in greek to add a contact (i dont know if it has been fixed)...
non rooted desire with froyo
yep, got these problems too, however I'm not on stock froyo, NeoPhyTe 5.0. I have also noticed another problem, whenevery I'm scrolling through the widget, sometimes all messages seem to be from one contact, even though they're not! weird, but then I let it reload and all seems fine
Ive sort of tried to search this one (How do I search JUST the Epic 4g section of XDA??) and found no one describing this problem the way I do...
This is my second time having this issue, and the fix for it last time was a pain in the ass, so id like a new fix-
Every app, every aspect of my phone, continuously resets/reloads. This is most noticeable with Hancent SMS, as it saves a message as a draft when you close out of the app... Well, right now, ill be typing and "message saved as draft" will constantly pop up at the bottom of the screen (about once every 2 seconds), and the phone will lag and it will erase 1 or two characters(making me look like I cant type :silly: ).
If this was the only problem, maybe I could live with it, but it affects everything. Launcher Pro randomly/continuously resets. The notification bar often resets while trying to pull it down. The phone app will close or freeze as soon as I start receiving a call. Sometimes it'll play my ringtone without a way for me to answer, other times I never knew I missed a call unless they leave a voice mail... And sometimes its worse than others, sometimes its fine for an hour, then something goes stupid and even a reboot doesn't help. For instance, right now, it was happy. I launched aLogcat to check it out and now the screen orientation REFUSES to stay one way. Even setting the phone down, it switches directions every few seconds, which makes aLogcat reload and therefor its unusable.
I haven't mentioned what im running because Ive had this exact same issue on a totally different rom, almost a year ago, but im running-
build - SleeperROM_3.0.0_FC09
kernal - 2.6.35.7-Shadow-FC09_v1.0
baseband - S700.0.5s.FC09
firmware - 2.3.6
Ive had this happen on EB13 on the EpicExperience ROM too.
SOO, if anyone has advice on how to fix this, id be extremely interested.
On the other hand, last time I had this issue I was convinced it was a corrupt piece of memory somewhere early in the OS, something I corrupt during install, and I went ahead and reflashed and wiped and reflashed and wiped and returned to stock and etc. etc. etc... and that seemed to work... actually, I dont know exactly what part of the process fixed it, thats why I do not want to repeat it unless I have to... BUT, if someone would like to explain/point me in the right direction. I'd like to know how to DELETE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE and FLASH as CLEAN as possible. (that is, if no one else knows of a fix for my problem)
thanks all!
Err, well only thing I can think of is a truly clean install using Odin. This means do not restore any data from backups. Then slowly begin installing applications 1-by-1 through the play store website (for speed sake) to see if your issue creeps up again.
It also couldn't hurt to format your SD card too. Corrupt data on the SD card can cause some wonky things at times.
get another device...i hope u have the equipment protection plan
Thanks for the advice guys OFF TO THE ODIN MACHINE! haha.
Hi guys, this problem just started to occur. I heard a notification sound from my phone which should have been the email tone but I was busy so i didn't check it. I noticed the sound was a little cut off at the end though. Then almost immediately afterwards, I got the sound for a new SMS. Then I checked my phone but I couldn't see any emails from before although there was a new SMS. When I tried to open the message, it would go into the Messaging app but then it would get stuck on a loading screen when I try to actually enter the message. When I go back to the main messaging screen, I can still see all my past messages, but each time I try to go into one, it'd get stuck on the loading screen. Eventually after maybe 3 minutes it finally went into the newest message i got, but when i tried to send a reply it would act like nothing's happened. The message i typed just disappeared. When I went back to the main messaging screen, I was able to see my message in the previews, but when i go back into that conversation, it would be stuck on the loading screen and now nothing is loading. This is really annoying. I haven't really used my phone in the last 6 hours and before that everything worked perfectly.
On another note, I'm noticing that during the night, my phone uses up about 30% of the battery just on idle. I have wi-fi turned on but is this normal? I only slept for 6 hours...by the way, the battery charging all seemed normal before but now I just plugged in my phone about 1.5 hours ago and it's only increased by about 3 percent...
My phone is not rooted and has been updated recently to the latest version. I also have Lookout Security installed. Any help would really be appreciated!
Update: I just noticed that my phone was blinking red and green one after another. After checking it seems to indicated that it's because it is overheating so i've now disconnected the charger and turned it off. But i can't think why it would be overheating. It's placed on a wooden table away from sunlight and any heat sources and like i mentioned earlier, I haven't really touched it in the last 6 hours so I was definitely not using anything intensive.
Did restarting fix the messaging problem ?
What apps have the highest % for battery use ?
Well, your phone probably was doing something intensive.
Maybe your antivirus was upset by the email or message.
@PhoenixFx: Yeah i did restart the phone which didn't help. I even turned the phone off for 30 minutes which cooled it down but as soon as i turned it back on, it started to get hot again. Whilst it was turned off i had it charging and then when it came back on i noticed the battery percentage increased much more so the battery was definitely fine. The process which used the most power was Viber which was at 9%, there were a couple of other processes but they were all under 5%. I even uninstalled Viber which didn't help. Looking at all the processes that were running, I couldn't see anything that was abnormal.

That could be but I don't see why it would. The message was just a regular text message.
Anyways, I have now done a factory reset and it seems to be fine again. But if anyone has ever come across this or know the solution, please let us know so if it happens again, I'll know what to do and it would also help others who experiences the same thing. By the way, how much SHOULD the battery drain overnight with the wifi turned on?
You may have gotten a virus. I got a gmail virus that wiped a lot of my emails and wouldnt let me receive. I know this is about messaging but they are made by google so it is a possibility. I suggest a full restore and to run a virus scan with one of the play store's antiviruses.

I had the same problem with the messages. They wouldn't open or they would take a lifetime to load and open. Resetting and **** wouldnt work so I did a re-install of my ROM, wouldnt work, so I did factory wipe and started fresh. So far so good.

Yeah I'm not having any issues so far. Of course, it could've been a virus but I scanned my phone regularly with Lookout and also when it happened. Very weird. Anyways, if it happens again, I'll post back. Certainly hope not, this was the second time in a month I had to do a factory reset (last time was when I updated to Sense 4.1 and for some reason it wiped my phone and didn't even do the update. I had to make it download the update again for it to install...)
Ok, it's just happened again. First i heard the notification sound for an email, but then when i turned on the screen, i couldn't see any notifications. Now when i go into my SMS, they take forever (literally) to load. This is really getting pathetic. The amount of problems i've had with this phone, not to mention the constant "loading" screen when i press the home key. FFS, i never had this many problems with my old iPhone 3GS.
Update: I've just done a scan with AVG and Lookout and both turned up nothing. Most likely that this is not a virus related issue then.
this is happening on the stock 2.17 firmware also
no notifications, if you look in the messaging app, new messages are there
i cant understand how htc cant fix this? its been present from 1.28 fw

a gmail virus? care to explain a bit more, like the name of it etc? i did have some problems where it wouldn't sync with the latest version but is now working ok..
If you text a hell of a lot like I do then the problem is the phone is trying to load all of the message threads as fast as possible. Which uses a **** ton of your RAM, hence the 3 minute wait. I current have the HTC one x+ but the phones are basically the same. Here's what i did for the same exact issues.
For constant overheating:
1.Let your phone die.
2.Put your phone in your freezer and let it sit for a few minutes until its pretty cold.
3.Fully charge your phone
4.If you havnt already done so, download the latest update for your phone
5.Turn on and keep the battery saver option on. You do not have to keep the brightness low though
For messaging issues:
Go in your messages and delete all of your old threads to people whom you no longer converse with.
This started happening pretty much immediately since I installed the 4.4.3 update late July, and has just gotten worse.
For a single one of my contacts, the SMS app lags HORRIBLY whenever I am doing anything with said person. It takes about half a minute just to load when I click his name, and the phone keeps completely freezing for up to 10-15 seconds EACH letter I type! It's not just the SMS app itself, but even the keyboard freezes up and is unresponsive. I can keep typing and it will apparently actually record the next 30 or so taps and just blaze through them ... then lag for another half minute or so again. None of the settings (how little there are) have had any effect. Once I click send the message also takes a bit before it appears and starts to send. Any action with this contact open in the SMS app seems to lag my phone like a unusable nightmare.
Since this is the person I tend to text the most, I have been tempted to crush the phone in my hand at this point. It is ONLY happening with them, and ONLY after the 4.4.3 update. It's not consistent either; I was still having this issue earlier today, but right now as I wanted to text him again it was working perfectly lag-free.
I know the first response anyone is going to say is to wipe my phone, but with this being the only issue I have, I really do not want to completely obliterate everything and start over from scratch just to fix one person in my SMS app. On top of that, I want to keep my SMS texting history as well. (Plus I would have no idea if restoring a backup wouldn't also restore the issue).
Has anyone else encountered or heard of anything like this? Or has any ideas of anything OTHER than wiping the phone or my SMS history I can try? Considering the app only pre-loads the last 10 or so messages when you open a contact anyway, I highly doubt it's my history. I am going nuts with this stupid thing.
It is probably something in that message thread.
Deleting all messages from that person will surely fix it, based on what you've said.
You can try wiping the messaging apps cache. Other than that, I think you're stuck.
Second the opinion above. If it's only one message thread doing it, seems likely it's something unique to that thread. Too many messages, pics, etc. I used to use Titanium Backup to save messages between rom flashes, back when I cared about them, so a backup app can save the messages, let you delete the thread and see if it still happens with a blank slate.
Basically for the last 2 months all the apps that use internet have basically stopped loading/take 9-10 minutes, except for chrome and messaging. Pictures won't even try loading on twitter and facebook. Most of the times I try to open up google play the whole thing is just grey and infinitely loads or never even tries to.
Every now and again it starts working like normal and oh boy do i cherish those moments but that happens maximum once a day then it stops. I know it's not a connection speed issue because videos will load quickly on browser youtube and pages load normally. I have no idea why this happened, all of a sudden it stopped working.
None of my other devices do this with my connection. I haven't rooted my device or anything but I still did a factory reset and nothing changed. The only period it worked for like 2 hours was when I change the UI or whatever from blink feed to something like dodol. I've had the thing for like 4 months now COMMON I am going absolutely mental, I have so much work to do and a practically bricked phone is not helping so I will be indebted for life to anyone who can come up to a solution.
Thanks guys.

Hard mode: Run a logcat and have it saved to a .txt file on your PC, let it run for a while, while attempting to open the apps you said give problems, if there is an error that's causing it you can find it that way. A lot of reading though.
Easy mode: Restore a nandroid backup for your device.
I would suggest to restore just the system, boot but not data but your problem might be because of some app in there so you'll have to restore the data as well and start from scratch. Seeing as you already did a factory reset and lost everything, something that you restored has to cause this issue.
