Since the 8 gb card that came with my DHD is a little too small I'm looking for a 16 gb sd card.
I browsed through amazon's selection and found many bad reviews regarding data loss on several products. What brands are generally known for reliable SD cards? Sandisk seems to make good cards?
And another thing, I read that often SD cards are faster than their class. There were people that got transfer rates of up to 15 mb/s with a class 2 card. Apparently a class 2 card is basically the same as a class 6 card, just that in the latter case the manufacturer guarantees the higher speed while in the former it might be slower. Is that true?
As for brands, I recommend SanDisk and Lexar. I've used cards from both manufacturors in all my cameras and phones for years, and I've never had a card fail me.
I got 2 Lexar in camera + phone : no problems so far
+1 for SanDisk
The Speed Class Rating is the official unit of speed measurement for SD Cards, defined by the SD Association. The Class number represents a multiple of 8 Mb/s (1 MB/s), and meets the least sustained write speeds for a card in a fragmented state.

If I understand it write, the class rating is a sustained speed, so you may get faster speeds, but usually not.
Also from that same site, manufactures quote speeds, and not an independent testing company, so they may not always be honest XD
Secondly, Sandisk for 16 gig never gave me a problem. However, at 8 and 4 gig pny hasn't given me any issues either.
i wanted a bigger card a month ago and looked at both lexar and sandisk 16gb, i went for the lexar as it was apparently faster in the reviews and was only a tiny bit more expensive than the sandisk. and it has been perfectly reliable.
Ok, thanks.
joememe, which reviews did you read? I found one lexar vs sandisk at nokiaguide.com and just want to make sure we don't both base on the same review.
Because if lexar really is better I'll spend the few extra €.

That's interesting and a good thing because standards like S-ATA 1/2/3, USB 1/2/3 and many others define the max possible transfer which isn't very userfriendly.
So I suspect that all cards of a manufacturer are essentially the same and get a class 4/6/10 rating after production according to their QA results. Like with a CPU you might get lucky and the card just barely didn't make it to 10 and thus get a very good performance class 6 card.
I ordered a 16gb class10 Transcend card from Newegg and LOVE it. Lifetime warranty ftw!! I've tried returning Sandisk cards for warranty and haven't received a response in months...so not +1 for Sandisk if there are warranty problems.
I just picked up a Transcend 4gb class 6 micro sd from Newegg and it died within a day. Luckily Newegg is shipping out a replacement asap and I don't have to return the defective card.
+1 for lexar 16gb class 6
Here's a link to the one I use. I own 8 or so of these and use them in cell phones, camera's, and even in a cam corder. I have yet to see one of them fail or have any sort of performance issues.
SanDisk 16 GB Class 2 microSDHC Flash Memory Card
Note that even though it's a class 2, in my testing with each of the cards I own, I have consistently gotten class 4 performance from all of them.
If you want something even bigger, the 32 GB cards have really come down in price. Here's a SanDisk for $71.
SanDisk 32GB MicroSDHC Card (SDSDQ-032G-A11M, US Retail Package)
Isn't the price a bit too low? The one on Amazon has a bad review saying it didn't come in the retail package.

IMO, Sandisk is definitely the best choice for a quality microSD. They always perform much better than their class rating. And the also are most consistent in getting good randon read, write and access speeds, which is much more important that the class rating when using the card in cell phones or for any task other than just large data transfer and digital cameras. Higher class cards only give higher sequential write speed, but usually are worse at random read/write speeds and access time than a class 2 or 4.

If I am not mistaken, that is a standard SDHC, and not the micro SDHC that our phones require.
I got this one and works fine:

formats to about 14gb of space and is pretty snappy
There are a couple of off-brand class 6 cards that have shown up on ebay and Amazon called TopRam and 3C Pro. Anyone have experience with these?
I am familiar with the usual suspects (i.e. Sandisk, Kingston, Patriot, A-Data, etc). but was wondering if there have been any positive reviews with the ones above since then do tend to run substantially cheaper.
*Edit* Doh, not microsd!!

Just noticed that and was about to edit. That's what I get for surfing while working!
If you're lucky to have Micro Center stores in your area, their house brand 16GB microSD card is not bad at all. For $34, you get a card marked as class 2. But I've tested mine on my PC and its write speed is around 7 MB/s and read speed is around 14 MB/s, practically a class 6 card! No wonder this card always seems to be out of stock quick.
dang before when i checked it it was a micro sdhc weird

i know what class means. There have seen a few reviews stating 6+ writing. Sandisk is about as as good a quality chip that you can get so paying less and getting quality is a win win.

I purchased mine on Buy.com because it was a little cheaper there a few months ago when I ordered it.

Yeah this one, or a lexar class 10 if you want high transfer speeds with your pc.
Or a sandisk class 2 if you dont care about recording movies to your micro sd card.
the sandisk 32gb class 4 will work good with 1080p recording ?
and where i can buy it ?
because on amazon.com i can't find the class....
thanks
When I bought the Samsung WB2000 / TL350 compact camera which recorded 1080p @30fps it required a "Sandisk Extreme"... It apparently has a 20MB/s write speed. No class written on the card though...I think it's class 6 as class 10 is 30MB/s.
I would have thought you'd need a higher class to write HD video...
Note: "Sandisk Extreme" is a SD card not a Micro-sd

There is no class certified for 20MBps or 30MBps.
Class 10 = 10 MBps, thats why is 10.
So class 6 = 6MBps, class 4 = 4MBps, class 2 = 2MBps.
Class is equal to the minimum write speed in random spaces.

No, Class is the minimum write/read speed in sequential. The Lexar Class 10 32GB only does 0.018 MB/s in random write!
any more answer that might help me choose a good card ?
thanks
You need to figure out what you need in terms of speed and size, then how much money you want to spend. A 32GB class 10 card is extremely expensive, where a 16GB class 6 is around a third of that. I plan on using my Galaxy S II for holding all my music and some movies so I ordered this yesterday: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208573. Not too expensive and fast enough for most things.

i want 16gb but don't know which class and brand to take...
my main concern is recording video in 1080p
I have a class 10 Lexar 32GB Card.
You should buy a brand name card (Sandisk, Lexar, Kingston). I say that because there are IN GENERAL more reliable. There will be cards that are made by lesser known brands like Patriot and A-Ram but that does not mean they are any less reliable but more faults are reported for them than with Sandisk, Kingston or Lexar.
Having said that, my previous card was a 16GB Class 6 Patriot card. Worked awesome for a whole year and is still working in my friend's Desire (gave it to him and got the Lexar card for more space). In conclusion, don't buy eBay cards is what I'm trying to say.
Class? That's been debated A LOT. I got a class 10 and I can clearly see the benefit. Media Scanning is less than 10 seconds (mind you, I've got close to 38gb full in both internal and external cards), file copying is very quick and gallery files show up quicker, when I seek in a video file, it moves instantly (even with a 1080p movie).
It just depends on what you require. If you're slightly more patient, you can save 30-40 bucks by getting a 32gb class 2 card instead of a 32gb class 10 card.
Hope that helps. I recommend both Lexar and Patriot. Go for class 6 at least if price is not an issue.

These new 20-nanometer-class offers 32GB of storage at a Class 10, the highest speed class currently available (above Class 4 and Class 6). These cards offers write speeds of 12 MB/s and read speeds of 24MB/s. This makes them ideally storage partners for modern smartphones featuring 1080p-capable cameras.
“The industry demand for high-class-rated memory cards addresses the growing performance push for next generation mobile applications in more advanced smartphones including 4G models,” said Wanhoon Hong, executive vice president, memory sales & marketing, Samsung Electronics. “As the industry adopts microSD cards with a class 10 rating, the superior data transfer speeds are expected to improve the mobile user experience tremendously.”
You can find higher capacity microSD cards out there (KINGMAX introduced a 64GB Class 6 card back in May) but you won’t find faster.
No pricing details have been released, but I expect these to set you back a fair few dollars.
Is this going to be different than the anycall microsd card currently available from ExportPrive.com or is it just a rebranding available to US markets?
Has anyone used the anycall card BTW? any reviews?

A class 10 card has fast sequential reads and writes, but slow random reads and writes. Best for mobiles is still a class 4 card.

How then? Is it worth buying?
If you do a search, the stated 30mb/s, is only obtained if you use a compatible sd reader, so far there is only about 10-15 readers on the market that will full ultilize the UHS 1 specifications, and the fastest one being from kingston and sandisk themselves.
Some cameras also supports UHS 1 to take advantage of the speed.
the figures are off my head, it was done a few months ago, and I have tested over 15-20 different sd cards, i will correct them later on if they are different.
using the kingston reader.
Sandisk
UHS 1
read 38mb/s
write 7mb/s
non UHS 1

write 7mb/s
other UHS 1 microsdhc available:

non UHS 1

I am using SanDisk Mobile Ultra 16GB, beforeit I used TDK class10 16GB
The write speed in Windows I feel that it's lower than TDK 16GB
but the quality of card I think that is better than TDK absolutely!
sandisk cards are much more stable, and the speed is stable too, while other brands the speed flutuates alot.
The Samsung micro SDHC cheaper then Sandisk and very good.

read my post further up the page.
I recently purchased several MicroSD cards from eBay, all of which came from places in Asia, for less than $10 each.
When they arrived, I began testing them to see how well they would perform. I wrote zeros to the MicroSD cards and found the performance to be that of a class 2 card. The card was supposed to be a class 10.
I got 3.7 MB/s writing speed, with around 6.5 MB/s reading speed.
The card is recognized by my computer as a 34 GB MicroSD, with nearly 32 GB available.
Unfortunately the sellers don't seem to be taking responsibility for selling slow cards, because when contacted, they all want to do a half refund, insist that I received a defective card, and it would cause them major losses to resend a class 10.
I put one card in my netbook so I could have 32 GB of swap, and I've managed to compile CyanogenMod, when I previously could not
I hope this sheds some light on the current status of the generic class 10 32 GB MicroSDs found on eBay

Most phones or tablets should be able to use the full speed, unless it's a very cheap phone or tablet.
If someone is trying to sell you a class 8, I'd be a bit skeptical, as there is no class 8.
