Do Differnt Kernels Really Help Your Battery Life? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had my G2 since last year of early December. The first week I had it, I didn't root it because I wanted to see what kind of battery life I was going to get out. Heavy useage no matter what I seem to do I would get. 15 to 18 hours. Calling, texting, web, youtube, & games. If I didn't use the phone that much I would get over a day which would shock me. What I'm trying get at is do differnt kerenls really help your battery life? I've seen many people claiming this and differnt people got differnt results because of useage. What do you think post below.

YES.
I with the stock rom and light to no usage I would get about 8 hours. With continuous usage, probably just over an hour. With pershoot's undervolted kernel and CM7, I can get about 12 hours, and just about 4-5 hours heavy usage.
I really wish I could get these amazing battery lifes (lol) that everyone else seems to be getting, but it seems that I'll just have to deal with it because I live in a place with pretty much no signal.

[Q] Battery lifetime on official OTA Froyo ROM release?

Hi
Any news on how long battery last on the new official release?
Im currently on Pays ROM, and battery last between 24-48 h, with 3g and wifi turned on and daily use of phone, sms and browsing.
Just tried some ROMs that didnt even last a whole day
In 3 hours I have nearly used 50% of battery and that is with 3 short phone calls.
System, cell standby, wifi and phone idle account for 80% usage. Was using a different froyo rom before putting oem one on and did not have this type of drain.
Also not using an app killer as people have been saying that the system can handle the apps, that has not been the case and will install again.
My battery drain has been up massively since I went to 2.2 with the OpenDesire ROM. Phone standby takes most of it. What's causing such excessive usage? Even on the official ROM now :-/
What ROM's are you guys getting best battery with?
You should post on which ROMs you have the battery drain...
I have had massive battery drain on all ROMs until I started using the rooted 2.2 OTA. I would have to charge my phone twice every day but now it's great, I have 65 percent left after a full day of heavy use.
Edit: tried almost every FroYo ROM before this.

Which ROM are you using? I can't decide which one to download
Battery life is also my only problem with this otherwise amazing phone
Maybe it's the rom/radio combination!?
I had PaysDesire v2.3 before installing the OTA 2.2. The battery with PaysDesire with average use went from 100% to like 60% in 12 hours. With the latest one, i lost 8% in 2 hours but with over average usage. Testing the camera, installing apps, setting up things...
That is why I am still not convinced that the battery sucks on 2.2 and I will wait few days (until the shine wears off, as Coldplay would say) before bringing my final decision.

yep ,I now about
you use OTA officiall not ruted
Doesn't you guys' phones' display use most of the battery? For me it's at least 70% of the battery usage.
With SetCpu I use about 1% battery on standby, but as soon as I use it, it drains battery like crazy, even though the brightness is set to 25%...
I am using this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
I took it off charge at 7 a.m. an have used it quite heavily today and the battery is still at 50% so I am pleased.
8 Hours and im on 68 %
2 Hours 3D Gaming and browsing 1 Hour.SmS/Few Calls between.
Official 2.2 Froyo ROM.
Wait for Kernel Sources and i think Battery Drain will fall and fall =)

I'll second that. Definitely getting better battery performance on ieftm's ROM than any of the 2.2 ROM's I've used before including Neophytes's, DeVillain, and various others. I've also got much more memory too.

you win the prize for the 1000th desire user posting in the wrong section. The moderators are probably going to win their 100th prize for not moving threads/warning people. And we'll just end up with the 10th thread about battery life scattered in every place.
that aside, no rom or os version has changed a fig for me about battery. It's still good in reasonable terms.

+1.i am getting really good battery performance on this ROM.
but from my experience even from WinMO you will never find a single ROM on which people would agre on 100% that is good or bad.everyone is getting different results.everyone has different apps instaled, using different combination of services (push mail,wi fi,3G...).
Someone will always claim good battery life and others will say it is crap.this is really about testing what works for you the best.
Sorry for my english guys...
When i have a good connection then my battery is ok. After 16 hours i have still 12%. If my connection is bad (i'm in a building) so it search for connection and lost it again i see the battery drain and my battery is empty after few hours...

Unfortunately, there are no definitives, and if you aren't getting good battery life with the stock kernel with warm2.2, you might want to start looking at some battery tweaks.
There is a thread over in the Evo 4g General forum, the title is "2.2 ultimate kernel review :: Updated 11/6/10" and the OP is skydeaner. His site also has one of the battery "fixes" if its not holding a charge correctly.
Unfortunately, I can't link to it, since I'm still a newbie poster, but, some of the higher rated ones are Kings #11, and the new Net 4.2 kernels.

There were a lot of people complaining about the awake time of the 4.2 build, so Net tried to tweak the 4.2.1 to have the great sleep time of 42 with the great awake time of 4.1.9
I havent had the phone awake alot today but with light use I have gone from 100% at 8 am to..... 75% at 10:30pm This was no browsing or games, just phone for about 5-10 minutes and maybe 5 minutes of texting only 1.25 hrs awake time total so far.... so very light use today. But ive NEVER had the phone stay 75-80% inot the evening.
I REALLY hope the awake performance is as good as the sleep performance. We'll see how it does tomorrow under some stress.

Just for a baseline, I just put my phone back to root to take it back, I've lost 50% over about 26 hours of moderate texting and usage with just JuiceDefender running.
I have Kings #11 and my battery blows. I drain 25% in less than an hour with moderate use. This is off topic but when you enable your 4G does it automatically turn off on you. I think my 4G is broken and just want to know. I may need to reflash it.
im runnin it with stock kernal and i have no complaints. I just took a screenshot showing like 43% left off charger for 14 hours and talk time was like 1hour and 23 mins. Plus iv used it to play mabey half hour of games and half dozen text. Il see if i can get the ss posted.

Best kernel for battery life?

Which .37 kernel gives the best battery life? I flashed Incredikernel last night and then charged the phone. This morning I used it for 10 minutes to check emails and the battery went from full to 79.
Oh, and I'm running CM7 RC2
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I'm also very interested in this. I just recently rooted/flashed CM7 RC2, and the battery life has been quite disappointing so far. Even with the unnecessary services turned off, my battery drains quite quickly.
I am rolling with SkyRaider 3.5, Lou's #8, an 1800mah battery and this morning, I shocked myself!
I left my house w/88% charged. Took my son to the dentist - used the phone for probably 44 minutes during that, just goofing off, reading, tweaking and whatevering ...
When I left the dentist office, 77%. Drove to work (1 hour) ... sitting at 74%.
I am also running the evo radio - which some say helps or doesn't - but I'm as happy as can be.
I turned off all of the memory management stuff and the phone is lasting longer...
I should also add - that I use Juice Defender, however when USING your phone, it is "defenseless". I find it to help me a lot with my "in my pocket" battery life. You still get txt and calls, you just don't get internet traffic.
YMMV
Where did you turn off the memory management features?
I've been using ziggys latest on Incredibly Re-Engineered Z and having great battery life. 14 hrs today off charger and was still at 50%.

I use the stock battery on my rooted Evo and it lasts all day.
It really does depend on weather your rooted or not cuz on my stock battery I can go about a day in a half maybe a couple hours less MAYBE but then I have a Seidio 3500 mAh that can go exactly 2 days 1 hour and 38 minutes with heavy heavy use and also on a charge of 93 percent
So again are you rooted?

Any stock kernel will not charge any extended battert correctly. I experimented with this for the last month.
I found an app called boot manager and now have 4 roms installed on my phone. At night I boot into a Froyo ROM with a SBC kernel and charge it, then in the am, boot into my Gingerbread ROM.

Yep. If I don't use my phone it will last all day and lose about 1.5% every two hours. I just recently switched to my current setup and am still not used to it. I'll unplug my phone at ~95% and head out the door. I'll pull it out of my pocket a number of hours later and see that it's only down to about 93% - 92%. Before I switched my setup I would've been down the low 80's if not lower. When I use it my battery depends on what I am doing with it and what I have my scaling set to. Using my phone for things like texting, facebook, email, and some web browsing on Skyfire, which is what I would consider heavy use, it goes down about 3.5% per hour. Yesterday I went to my little niece's dance class and I used my phone to record video of her entire 60 minute dance class. Battery went down about 30% percent from that but that's to be expected. I remained out of the house for another 8 hours after her class and my phone still had 50% battery left by the time I got home. Wireless tether eats up my battery. But Thats because I am usually tethering while texting and testing launchers and such on my phone.
I do all of this on a stock battery. So I can only imagine how much I'd be able to do with an extended battery.
I get 30+ hours on my extended battery 2600 from sprint. LOL on warm 2.2

You just need to find the ROM and kernel combo that works well with your phone. I have tried ROMs/kernel combos that some get excellent battery life from but mine is horrible and vice versa. Keep testing as it is a trial and error type thing. Also your kernel settings can make huge differences. What works for one may not work well with your phone. Different settings on the same kernel may net you excellent results.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747
I have noticed battery life tends to vary wildly depending on ROMs and even people. I guess I don't use my phone all day long, but on a TouchWIZ 4.1 ROM, the app "Battery Left" (from Play Store, its free) reports that I can get up to 46 hours on a full charge, based on my typical usage patterns (and if I use Greenify). On the other hand, I have used an AOSP 4.2.2 ROM in the past (such as LiquidSmooth), and Battery Left will tell me, after a few days, that I will get about 25 hours on a full charge (again, with Greenify). I have to do more testing, but there is definitely some difference between ROMs and battery life...

I am using one of the unofficial CM11 ports that is supported nightly and have been getting terrible battery life. I hate to ask the question which is the "best", but what would be a good kernel to flash?
I do not do much heavy gaming either. In fact, I do not do any gaming. Just casual browsing.

Well before I suggest any kind of "good kernel to flash" I want to make note of something. If you're running a nightly of an unsupported version of CM11 then don't expect great battery life. This has little to do with what you're doing on the phone but the purpose of nightly's is to have users report bugs. Many of these bugs are the kind that can drain battery rather quickly. So the first thing I'd do is find a stable AOSP rom to run on before thinking about kernels.
That being said, a kernel universally accepted as "good" is KT747 by Koonsez

Thanks for the reply bud. I personally like supporting the nightly versions of ROMs but I wasn't thinking the reporting that I do is causing that much of a battery drain.
I may consider today to go to a stable AOSP ROM that isn't nightly.

One question I had in regards to all these ROMs is, do they not come with their own Kernel which I would have assumed is the best recommended for the given ROM. When i see battery life of 14+hrs with room to go, I must be doing something wrong.
Thank you for any info in advance.

I am using one of the unofficial CM11 ports that is supported nightly and have been getting terrible battery life. I hate to ask the question which is the "best", but what would be a good kernel to flash?
I do not do much heavy gaming either. In fact, I do not do any gaming. Just casual browsing.
