Controlling EVO from computer? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've seen some people using this in Youtube videos and I would like to know where to get it. Do you need an app and a program or what? Any help is appreciated, thanks.
Swyped from my sexy EVO.

I'm not sure about controlling the EVO with the PC but you can use an app such as Phonemypc to use the evo to control your computer.

Quick question, how do I know what's my computers name?

Not sure which program you are referring to exactly, and there are quite a few out, but Droid Explorer is the best one, hands down. I use it all the time on my Windows 7 machine. It gets better with every update and lets you do things that most of the others do not. I highly recommend it.

Two other options are:
DroidExplorer control your EVO and much more from PC
TeamViewer remote in and control your PC or any PC running TeamViewer from your EVO
Both are free and far better options IMO

Very nice...Tried TeamViewer, and its was nice. the screen lag was fairly minimal as well.

Yeah, TeamViewer is amazing. I use it daily in trouble shooting other pc's. I have used Hamachi and VPN and GoToMyPc and pretty much everything else, but TeamViewer is by far the best. And FREE for personal use, so hard to beat.

i had no idea an app was out that could control my evo from a pc I need to check this out asap.

Have any of yall tried Splashtop Remote..I like it but it does seem to be lag at times. Does TeamViewer or the other apps you recommend work on a 3g connection as well? or is it only your LAN?

I've used this in the past but it was laggy as heck. Maybe it's gotten better?

Droid VNC server works just fine to control your EVO from your PC.

Splashtop was ok, but really too lagy for me and not nearly as advanced as TeamViewer. There really is no other remote access software that compares to TV. Almost every IT pro I know has switched from Hamachi or VNC to TeamViewer and with it being FREE for non-pros, I just don't think you can do better.
DroidExplorer works in the opposite direction, controlling your EVO from your PC. The thing I like most about DE is that is Android specific and it has the abilities of a RootExplorer with tons of access to your EVO. You don't even have to mount your SD to move files back and forth from SD to PC and vice versa. The only lag I have experienced is using the screencast feature, but it wasn't that bad either. There is a pretty comprehensive list of abilities here.

How so? I have Android VNC Viewer on my rooted (cm7) Evo and I can't seem to make it work with Chicken of the VNC.

I would have to disagree. I (as an IT Professional) prefer WYSE PocketCloud for remote desktop from my phone. It (imo) has the least lag and most options and the mouse and keyboard are top notch. It does cost money, but well worth it. But is only good if you have Remote Desktop setup. Dont like installing "free" software on my clients machines.

How much money? And thanks for answering so far after the thread was created. I appreciate the help.

Teamviewer does not have to be installed. There is a run option in the exe. I use Teamviewer all the time, if I can't physically get to the workstation. I use Log Me In Rescue as well, but prefer Teamviewer for personal usage.

You need a app to use USB Mass Storage mode with OSX...REALLY Google?

Got my new Galaxy Nexus today, and the day went pretty much playing with it.
One thing that I don't get is that if you're using Mac/OSX you need to download an OSX app from android.com to use USB Mass Storage mode in OSX.
Really Google? You really can't be serious with this BS towards OSX users
Google don't like apple simple and its vice versa

It's not that.. the nexus doesn't support USB mass storage.. it uses MTP (a microsoft protocol) for media transfer..
OS X doesn't have native MTP support like Windows does.. so google provides a program you can use to transfer files..

This is the sad truth.. there is an advantage to it (which is why they chose to do it); the entire storage can be used for apps.
If it's a big issue for you, just wait until an ICS device with an SD card comes out. the SD card will allow regular USB mass storage (without any extra PC/Mac software)

Just wait until Google's OSX app crashes for the n'th time in a row. Then you will really question Google's choice of MTP.
Google wrote that using this scheme allows Android to keep the drive mounted and provide access to the host. And with respect to MTP, well most people use Windows and MTP is well support on that platform.
Sigh...
i downloaded the app and haven't thought about it since. not a big deal.
eric b
I can't say i've really noticed it being a problem, it was the same with the xoom. It exactly the same process, just the 3 minutes it takes to download the app the first time that is the difference.
Not really a major issue.
There's also things like Wifi File explorer and also a DAV server - so you can mount the phone remotely as a drive - available on the android market.
No real need to use the cable, unless you're doing development with it.
Or you can run Windows in a VM on your MAC like I do. I need windows for certain apps so I have Parallels 6.0 and I get everything I need without compromise. The BLAME sites squarely with APPLE.

That app seems to barely work for me with my tab 10.1. It worked fine at first, but now it never seems to work regardless of the ROM I'm using (which is typically stock). Hopefully the Nexus won't/doesn't have that problem.
If you're wondering, it doesn't show the data on the device. It just shows <none> for the folder and file.

MTP is NOT a Microsoft protocol (though might've been developed by them). It's a USB standard and has been since 2008. Apple has just been slow to implement it.

Not raging, just wondering why it is this way. But I got good responses, and couple of idiots here also trying to boost their egos.
The thing why I'm complaining is that the app that google tells you to install, doesn't work very well It usually hangs on the first run, and you have to force-quit it, and open it again to get it working.

Best Application for Transferring Files without Cord

I am currently running ics-deck-pa8 and after some research it seems there is no USB support for mounting, however I found this app that works great! Its easy install to. No port forwards, no firewall issues, no user/pass needed, just install, start, and change away

um, dropbox?
I dont like dropbox. Never did. Also this uses LAN not WAN access to sync everything. As well, its an FTP client so I can drag, drop, modify, share to any folder on the phone. As opposed to: drag files to Dropbox folder, wait for sync on both sides, then use a file browser to drag and drop files where you need them.
Im doing a lot of file moving back and fourth for mod'ing right now on the ICS Rom and dont have USB SD mount support.
Ftpserver app (pretty sure it's that its simple) and filezilla is what I use when cable is not an option. You can use it over wifi and 3g ... I believe that's what you are asking about. hope it helps

Es File explorer works great. You can bookmark local shares and it can treat dropbox and box.net accounts like a folder, seemlessly. Root access, etc

I tried AirDroid for ICS pa8 and it wasnt co-operating. It looked like a great App. It kept giving my my 3G IP Address and not my WiFi IP address.
hmmm. I just though about turning off 3G and trying it. Either way they both accomplish the same thing.

A long time ago I couldn't get my computer to recognize my Evo, so I bought this app called Websharing or something. It uses webdav, and I've found that too be the best option for dragging and dropping files without USB. If you can find a free app that uses webdav then I'd try that out. Once you have it setup it's just like having your phone connected via USB, except transfer is a bit slower.
The app I bought hasn't been updated in over a year. There's a free version but you only get webdav with the paid version. If you can find a free app that does the same then I'd save your money.

Those will all work...but IMO,
Kaspersky and Norton are both too heavy. They will slow your system down considerably.
I've worked tech for PC's for years. Honestly, I don't use a antivirus program anymore.
I have a set of programs that I use to clean up infections if I get one an its rare.
A good solution is a good firewall. I've just ran the stock vista an the problems have been minimal.
In the virus world, most big name antivirus companies engines are well known. Kind of like how internet explorer seems more attacked than Firefox was back in the day.
AVG is a free antivirus program. Its one of the best ones out there.
The best way to protect yourself, don't go places you shouldn't. Don't click on **** you shouldn't. Etc...
I haven't paid for software ever...I'm just careful.
Pm me, I'm off work tomorrow an I'll send you a list of all the software I use.
AVG is the best and you can either use the free version or the paid one.
Bewere of avg. .. if you ever uninstall it for another program it leaves system avg files hidden. And when u install another anti virus it causes Alot of problems. had disk problems. it was a nightmare. i use aviaria now.

Norton and Mcafee are the two worst you can use.
If you are looking for a free solution then I would go with Microsoft Security Essentials. It's fast and does a great job of picking and stopping just about anything and doesn't cause issues with the operation of the PC it's on.
If you want a paid solution then the only one I would suggest is Kasperky. Again it's fast and does a great job of protection.

True, but working tech I've had more PC's come in with a virus that it let by.
It is very light on the system though.
Overall, I just hate using any of them.
Like I've said, personally I take my chances without anything. Then manually remove them later.

The problem is not in the software\scanner but in the user. I run into the same issues and it's all a user issue in the end.
I've watched people at work get a warning pop up and they will not read it and just click to allow what ever it is to run causing a HUGE amount of head aches for me later.

I happen to download a lot of crap on MY computer.. eg shareware, game trainers, keygens..etc. and that 3 piece Combo right there keeps my vista running clean
AVG for virus scans 3:am everyday
CC Cleaner for cache and temp files once ever 2 weeks or so 2 passes
SPYBOT SEARCH an Destroy... tho outdated it comes with TeaTimer which is a light weight registry permission monitor... trust me tea timer the most effective and probably the most important part of the security combo

I tried "several ways" in the past. Nothing suits better than Boot Camp -> Windows.
- Eats up battery a lot, the T2 chip(late December 2017 and newer models) is not exposed to Windows for security reasons and remains as "unknown device" in Device Manager, but no other issues at all.
I use DEX in the Mac environment and it works great. It's the same as it was as a standalone on my prior devices.
