why won't my wireless tethering connect to some devices? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i am using a Samsung Epic 4g that is rooted and i use wireless tether and it only works on some devices? my friend just tried connecting to my wifi via the wireless tethering but his device (Droid) did not find my wireless address? does this sound like a problem with his device? or is it something on my phone?

Its because android phones don't support ADHOC, so tethering won't work for them.
There may be a hack that i don't know of though.

ok i see. so now the next question is if anyone knows a hack let me know please lol!

I need a hack for this as well, does anyone know of one?

The newest wifi tether app experimental version 3 supports infrastructure mode, this works even with intel chipsets (which have been a chronic problem with wifi tether). I would try that.

USB Tethering?

Hi,
I'm a new owner of a G2. I've been looking for a way to get USB tethering to work, but haven't managed to find the info on it. I saw in the wireless tether thread that sherifone gives a shoutout to teferi for "his original USB tether script", but couldn't find the post by teferi.
Is it possible to get USB tethering working on the G2? How?
thanks,
del
Your best bet would be to gain root using VISIONary, and use the app "android-wired-tether" from Google Code

Pdanet also works

Oh, I thought I read the wired tether was not working due to some kernel issue.
Thanks. I'll give it a shot.

I use pdanet and wifi tether both work.
goodluck
In case anyone else is wondering. I tried wired tether and it did not work.
Windows 7 could not locate a driver for it. The device is displayed in the device manager with the yellow icon overlay.
On the Mac, it detects a network adapter but expects account information and some other info.
Wireless tether seems to work, but it was very slow for me. That's probably because the reception at work seems to suck. It spends more time on EDGE than 3G.
I may try PDANet eventually. But to be honest, I wanted to tether at work (the client's site) because their connection sucks pretty bad. But with the speed I'm getting, I may just stick to the client's network.

[Q] built in tethering in CM7 - same as wireless tether/barnacle?

How does the wireless tethering in CM7 work? I'm guessing it's the same as the free workarounds, rather than using the verizon paid tethering method. can anyone confirm this?
Same question here. I have tried that and the wireless tether app and neither work for me.

i got wireless tether work by going in and setting it manually to adhoc mode or use barnacle tether
barnacle definitely works, i just want to know if the built in one will result in tethering charges.
No, the built in tethering doesn't incur any charges.

[Q] Tethering not working!

What tethering app do we have that is working with the E4GT.
i am interested too...any non root solutions.

The video demoing it on an Epic 4G (original)? It works for the most part as long as you don't need encryption or Infrastructure mode.
I think there is a new profile needed for Wifi Tether + some kernel work possibly.
BTW for those not rooted EasyTether does work with USB connection to Win/Linux/Mac. I'm holding out for an unroot method before rooting for WiFI so this is working in the meantime. The free version works for most things but you must buy ($10) to get https pages.
Can someone please elaborate on how to get wifi tether working? I have rooted succesfully and even enabled Access control in the app as John stated above but it still isn't connecting. What is the additional work that is needed? PLEASE HELP! Thanks!
USB debugging I think has to be enabled also.
I have that enabled, still not working
Same here... no SSID being broadcasted.
I can't get wifi tether to work at all it keeps using ad hoc mode and my laptop never connects what setting do you guys have
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
It's only goign to do ad-hoc for now. I think there is either some kernel work or rom customization to support some of the Infrastructure mode features or maybe just a new profile in Wifi Tether since it doesn't recognize the phone currently and falls back to the generic profile.

How do you set that?

Anyone have any luck with this yet? Ad hoc mode is useless to me. Need infrastructure/AP mode, please.
How to use Wireless Tethering for Root Users on Epic 4G Touch
After reading hundreds of pages on this website & others, here's what I've concluded after 12 days with my new Epic 4G Touch:
1. The entire Samsung Galaxy S2 series may be unable to broadcast anything but AD-HOC. However, if infrastructre can be achieved, I expect someone on XDA or Cyanogen to accomplish it within 30 days.
2. Most receiving devices (such as a notebook, netbook or tablet) can be tweaked so that they can recognize AD-HOC. It involves replacing the wpa_supplicant which is commonly found in your system/bin folder. Google your device name, AD-HOC and wpa_supplicant and you'll likely be directed to web pages with the solution for your device.
3. If you're trying to tether an Epic 4g Touch to an Acer A500 Tablet I have a much simpler solution for you: Root it and then install the Taboonay custom ROM which will instantly modify your tablet WiFi so it sees ALL available AD-HOC signals.
4. After trying nearly half the different version of wireless tether, I found thee WiFi V3.1 beta 6 to work flawlessly without changing anything on my Epic 4G Touch.
NOTE: Until this is a VERY stable custom ROM I suggest simply rooting, installing ClockworkMod Recovery, SuperUser 3.0 which is required by WiFi Tether.
I've been tethering with pdanet because I want to hide my tether usage. Does sprint ever send out warnings/ultimatums about tethering without their "service"? I'm only using 4g if that matters.
Been able to tether my laptop &netbooks with both versions of wireless tether that I tried. My issues arise when trying to connect my Samsung 10.1 tablet, the AndroidTether is not coming up as a internet option, has anyone gotten their 10.1 to connect to their epic touch4g?

ad-hoc support

Hi guys,
As the title suggest , is there an ad-hoc support for the gn?

any answer????
Openen Hotspot with Connectify
-Nokia E51 connects (with and without encryption)
-Samsung Galaxy Nexus doesn't even show the hotspot.
adding the network manually is not working either

i tired every app and method available with no luck
i think the solution is to add ad-hoc support
I think the default wpa-supplicant doesn't support adhoc. We need to replace it with one that supports. I don't know if someone has made/fixed it yet. Still waiting for it as well.
Ad.Hoc
did you manage to connect through Ad.Hoc? I cannot find Adhoc in my Galaxy Note!! Can we enable AdHoc on Note?
Also need to use adhoc but my Nexus doesn't detect any...
i will try tonight,as i has my laptop at my GF's house.and wont be there until tonight .
but yha. if nobody has posted til than.
than be sure to watch out for my post
Btw,did any one of you guys try wifi direct?
im kinda unsure what it really does.
Did some search in Google and previous NEXUS had the same problem some users were telling to change wpa_supplicant in /system/bin but I think the one they where providing its not compatible with SGN.
As someone already said, I am not even able to see the an adhoc wifi network with my Galaxy Nexus.
My device is rooted but so far I did not find an easy solution to enable adhoc wifi.
However the same adhoc network works perfectly with an EEEpad transformer, so apparently the wifi client is already modified in the Asus tablet.
Has there been any update to this? Been searching this site and others and it doesn't seem like a wpa-supplicant file that can see Ad-hoc networks has been created yet.
I use Connectify - works pefectly.
Supposedly the 4.0.2 update should bring ad-hoc support.
I'm eagerly awaiting the roll-out... (Should have happened ages ago, but somehow it's taking quite a while to propagate everywhere.)
I suppose you could always go ahead and flash your own ROM, but personally I prefer to wait for the official OTA update.
I'm using a 4.0.3 ROM and before that had stock 4.0.2 and no ad hoc support was/is available. There is Wifi Direct which acts like ad hoc but that only works with other Wifi Direct devices.

Oh, Bother!
I was betting on 4.0.2 to solve this, but as you say, it appears that it's only the wifi-direct that frequently gets billed as 'ad-hoc-like' connection.
Is there any other way to enable ad-hoc connections?
Apparently on other devices there exist modified wpa_supplicant files that enable ad-hoc, but so far I haven't seen anything for the GN.

Unfortunately I'm running XP (yeah I know ) here at the office so Connectify won't work - no access point connections on XP.
any possible solution?
Use bluetooth to connect to your computer and share your internet connection with your phone.
I've tried it on windows xp.

I found the application Wifi Ad Hoc Enabler on the market, it require Root and it works grate for me, now i can see and connect to any ad hoc connection.

Wired tethering?

Does anyone know of any free wired tethering apps? I use wifi tether from the market for wireless tethering, but I'd like to connect my USB cable to a desktop with no Wi-Fi adapter and tether that way. I used to do that with my
EVO 3D with the hacked official hotspot app which supported both wired and wireless tethering. Just looking for something similar for the S3, I would appreciate any help

If you run cm9/10 there's an option built in for wired tether.
