Allow Editing of OP by Multiple Users? - About xda-developers.com

Especially for ROMs, kernels, etc where the post needs to be updated frequently, this would be a great feature. It would help to keep the OP updated, if the developer doesn't have time etc, or is actually developing Is there a way to make it so the OP of a thread can grant a few people access to edit his post, like forum admins can?

Great idea for collaborative work!

The idea has come up before, but I think it would be fairly difficult to implement, so you could control who could edit your post...

We could have Wiki below the original post, which multiple users can edit, like slickdeals.net have...it works fairly well...

Is there a way I can add my own signature on here? I heard that it is in USER CP but the option isnt there ...

It may take time after reaching the 5-8 post limit for it to allow you access, this is because the process runs in the background.
And when you have enough posts, you can edit your Signature in the UserCP (on the left hand side called "Edit Signature").
Or just click here : Edit Signature

People / Bots were Posting generic messages, like "Thanks this is great" or in some cases, actual responses based on words in a thread. The post it's self was not spam (although pretty pointless), but the users signature would contain 3-4 links to an online company of varying levels of trustworthiness.
We used to find one or two of these bad boys a day. Because they didn't create new threads, nor did they make it obvious to the casual observer, they were getting away with it.
I have not seen one of the so called "signature spammers" since the rules were put in place.
Dave
I had the same question...this is an excellent way to manage spam users. Good job, looking forward to delving more into this forum and getting a signature!
I was a bit upset at not being able to have a signature. Thanks Daveshaw for explaining. Its indeed a great way to stop spammers.

But you could post it in General, and then help a few people out while you were there, in Q&A, if your device has one. Don't bother with useless posts, they will be deleted and you'll never get to 10.

Well, you might be right but its not that easy. You know I have experience in those stuff in the development forum, but I have no way to make posts there.
I dont wanna be a sort of spammer by posting stupid stuff to get all the 10 posts.
But this 10 post rule leaves no other way to accomplish...
To find a topic that I can make a useful post takes a lot of time.
If you can't spend the time to make ten legitimate posts before posting in the dev fora, then you don't deserve to post there. This is a developer forum, not a support website.

Can we get popup notification when someone quotes your post

XDA the wonderful forum it is, but it has gone too big. Not that i'm complaining, but you're post seems to be lost many times because 100 other people posted after you especially in hot threads or ROM releases. So if you quoted someone or someone quotes you many times you skip it, or have to do a painful searches spanning 10's of pages...
Slickdeals.net (another big forum like XDA) has a wonderful system, that whenever someone quotes you're post you get a pop-up next time you log in with a link which takes you straight to the reply. I was wondering if such a system is possible here also?
Regards
BUMP
This feature would be really nice to have!
I like to idea, but I think it depends on the forum system. As I remember XDA uses vBulettin, you should check if it's possible to do this and if so you could ask one of the admins to set it. So to answer your question it's possible, but the admins won't change the source of the forum to do this.

I like this idea too. It might be too resource-intensive (we never want to add a feature that slows down the site). I'll ping our server admin to see if this would be possible.
I am really missing this type of feature!
Specifically, I know many other vBulletin forums that have a /whoquotedme.php page - it shows a list of the latest posts in which you were quoted. It greatly helps in discovering who's trying to communicate with you, answer a question you might've had, or ask one of you [without specifically sending a pm].
I believe something like http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=255285
I think it checks every post to see if there is a user id present when there is a quote in the post, and then associates a link to that post with the user who was quoted.
I haven't specifically heard of it being a resource hog, but then again I am not a vBulletin admin

Yes, it was determined to be very resource intensive, for a site with 4 million users, as every post would have to be checked as it was made, to see if it mentioned someone...

Are you referring to notifications to new replies on subscribed threads or new PMs? Those are definitely working. If your having an issue with that, we can certainly help you get to the bottom of why your not receiving yours.
When I want to go back to recent conversations I was involved in I use the "Find all posts by" link.
Click on your user name at the top right, select Statistics and there's the link - "Find all posts by your username". I've bookmarked this for easy access.
That way, if I've taken part in a conversation then I can carry on where I left off. If I don't want to see what people responded with then I obviously don't care, and that's up to me to choose. It's the easiest way to keep track of what you were involved in.

Hmmm. Well I just upgraded to a new phone yesterday so let me see if they work on the new one or not. I didn't turn them on assuming it was broken. I had an Eris and a lot of Eris users were complaining that the notifications had quit. I'll let you know.
Thanks
My notifications definitely are not working. I wiped all app caches, uninstalled the xda app, wiped data/dalvik cache and cache/dalvik cache and rebooted twice. I then reinstalled xda app, logged in and set preferences. Still no notifications and I have no idea why. Email and text messages work.

If you think of it like that way, it is...
However at slickdeals I think its implemented like whenever someone quote's, a notification is being sent to the ID whose post was quoted...that notification later pops up at bottom when that user logs on, similar to PM dialog which pops, you don't make an actual search in the post that if mentioned someone, so not that resource intensive I feel

I had a dream someone cleaned up the stickies on this and the android dev forum

Apparently I was wrong.
A+ thread, would read again.
But no seriously, I have a 1200 pixel tall monitor and the android dev forum is half of my screen. It just looks sloppy. Not that it really matters but it just makes it hard to sift through the data. Most other device forums have 1 or 2 stickies. We have 10. 4 of which could be compacted into 1 "read first" post, 3 of them are how to root, and 3 of them are about modems (possibly out of date anyway?).

lmao yeah dev pretty loud with duplicate EK02 how to this that , unroot tip 24 etc many threads on same topic which I'm sure gets a little confusing for newbies.
Only things needed in sticky status is sfhub automatic root & Jerdog How to flash tar with odin listing EG30 , EG31 , EK02 tars.
Operation Iron Fist , XDA development rules stay intact of course.
A major + would be a qbking sticky that had all rom reviews in one place.
Its simple stuff not confusing getting the job done.
From there merge 4 of the same topics together leaving kernels and rom threads in tact.
End result is clean organized forum
ok - you're going to complain and clutter the thread - one of you can be part of the solution.
Which of you wants to take a sticky to create:
Current Root Processes
Return to Stock Options
Kernels/Mods/ROMs/Recoveries
The key is you will have to maintain it. But if you can complain and clutter, then I think you're capable of compiling info and updating.
Otherwise......... i think you get the idea.
Thanks for the reply. I'll look at writing a few threads up when I get home from the gym.
Is it preferred that I link back to the original writer for some of these things? Copy pasta seems too much like stealing other peoples work to me.

create a post that has links to the original information - is just an informational sticky - title it so that it's easy to understand - maintain it - etc.
Also someone who wants to keep track of a list of ROMs.... Even one thread that has Kernels/Mods/ROMs/Recoveries all in one

I agree, I just thought about how if it was copied you would lose all of the old discussion.
I'll lay out a rough organizational later.
excellent idea!
Do you guys think we should have root guides in the dev forum, or the general forum? As of now we have them in both.
If any of you been a while, you might remember the sticky rollup. In that that you have a ton of links to the threads and the single sticky itself is just used for suggestions for other links. Once those links have been added, the posts deleted to clean the thread.

Any feedback on formatting or where stuff should be would be appreciated. If there's anything really redundant that should be removed from the dev post let me know.

Yeah that's the idea of a rollup. One thread to encompass them all. Then you break up the op like you did for grouping like thread links together. Maybe have a section for useful mods. I haven't checked it in a few months, but if you look at the HTC fuze rollup, you might get some ideas. Conantroutman made one for the captivate when he took midship of those forums. That one had everything bundled together. Some devices wikis are pretty nice, too. Maybe get an idea from that. The captivate is pretty good. Vibrant and epic are ones to get an idea of what not to do.

Is it possible to add this feature in the future? Up until now I had been using thanks kind of like bookmarks for posts that had useful information. I didn't realize I couldn't go back to them easily though.
Site admin needs to install newer version of Thank You plugin
Same discussion on Maemo forum got someone to find how to do this: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=171347&postcount=20
But this has to be done by the forum administrators by installing a newer version (7.2 or above) of "Post Thank You Hack" that gives the Thank You functionality to vBulletin: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=122944

I thought that plugin allows users to see the thanks they gave. Apparently, it doesn't.
Anyways, please address the main point of this thread - ability to see the posts thanked BY us.
I'd like to do this also, really wanted to see a specific post I thanked and it is lost in hundreds of pages

First post editable by various users?

Guys, i am a frequent poster at a LeTV s1/X600 phone thread. It would be great if the first post was updated frequently about new information/FAQS/updates/news ROMs, important information, etc. However the OP user, has the account disabled. It's a mess that important information is spread across several pages*, not usefull for people that needs info (sometimes urgent) and not for the guys doing the answering, we don't mind answering, but it would be better for everyone if the important information was in one place.
Now, sure i could open a new thread, but somewhere in the future i will sell this phone and maybe not interested in updating the info on the first post. So, is there a way to have a post editable by more than 1 user so when someone leaves, others could continue updating?
*- This is indeed a typical problem of forums.

Ok, this seems reasonable. In case i open a new thread, but after a while i'm no longer interested maintaining the first post i could pass to other user. How could this be done? Is there a way to actually change the user for the first post?
Other way maybe... I could open a new user account and share it, this would be ok too, right?

Ok, this seems reasonable. In case i open a new thread, but after a while i'm no longer interested maintaining the first post i could pass to other user. How could this be done? Is there a way to actually change the user for the first post?

To have the first post ownership changed, just hit report on the opening post and request the change. If it's someone else's thread, they would need to initiate the change. You can pm a Moderator from your section as well.
And no, it's against XDA rules to create more than one account. Also, multiple persons accessing an account is never a good idea.

All right then. Maybe it's easier to start a new thread. We just want to make a informative (FAQs, updates, tutorials, etc) opening post. BTW, the thread is this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/letv-one-x600-s1-hands-antutu-camera-t3130033
As you can see, the OP has the account disabled. But ok, we'll probably open a new thread.
Thanks for the attention guys.

Given the circumstances in which he was banned, I think in this case it would be best to start anew thread. Once you do, let me know and I can close the old one with a link to your new one.
