Wiping my SD card - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would like to start my phone off from complete scratch. I know there is a format/wipe option in the menu for my SD card, but does that actually delete everything on my SD card, including system files? If not, can I delete EVERYTHING on my SD card and use the Samsung installer to EB13?
Just wasn't sure if completely wiping the SD card would hurt anything?

yes, the format option on the phone does erase everything on your card, so if you choose that option, back up what you want to keep. it will warn you twice, lol. i beleive formatting your sd card is recommended in general, tho not always necessary.

you're welcome, i've done it myself a few times, just to start completely from scratch.

Thank you so much. This was really helpful. I was going to ask the same question, but a simple search function helped me find the answer!

I stupidly wiped my rom and SD card through Amon Ra Recovery now. Card is empty! Help

So i stupidly clicked on wipe sd card when i was trying to wipe sd ext in amon ra recovery. This is right after i wiped system, user data and such. Now i dont have a flashable rom on the sd card because its empty and now the rom i have on the phone is gone too. Please, how can i upload a rom from the computer to the sd card through recovery? or is there another method? Any advice will be appreciate and please feel free to call me stupid.

In the main menu, there's an option called USB-MS Toggle. Plug your phone into your computer and turn that on, and your SD card will show up as storage on your computer.
thanks !
Stupid!!!
Hehe, just kidding! I've done that before too... and I'm sure there are quite a few others on here that have made that mistake!!

my sdcard errored out. and my phone wont read it.. so.. i went and bought a new sdcard.. and trying to get my zips on the phone now.. thanks god.. hope i can flash my roms now..
I did this the other morning, I used a few programs and it brought my files back..I would have lost around 600 pictures.
I tried the following.
Card Recovery-http://www.cardrecovery.com/
Remo Recovery-http://www.remosoftware.com/
These will only work if you have not over written the files. I believe the card recovery is the one that brought my files back.
Ahhh ill remember this in case i do it again lol

Recuva has worked great for me in situations like these, I was able to recover all my files when the SD was somehow wiped a while back...

Thanks for posting this. I could use this program for my PC.

new sd Card Copied, Now all apps are gone??

I got a new Sd Card. Searched and folled instructions.
1. Turn off phone, copy sd card to temp folder on computer.
2. Copy temp folder contents to new sd card.
3. put sd card back into phone
4. turn on
Did all this, now my launcher is gone, and all my apps are gone. I check phones memory and the memory shows that a ton of stuff is installed, but i cant see it in the app drawer.
Any idea whats up?
Fresh Evo 4.1.1.
Well for the launcher especially, have you tried moving it to internal memory, or restoring with titanium backup?

All of my apps WERE internal memory...
If i go to internal storage, i can see all of the apps listed there. but they are greyed out.
I didnt do a titanium backup, just because i didnt think swaping an sd card was an issue. Even putting my old card in doesnt fix the issue
I am going to advise looking at this...BAM > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695243
Have you tried rebooting?
The sd card is recognized. That isnt the issue. The issue is that all of my apps, settings, and such in the Internal memory are no longer recognized. they are there. i can see them in the sd card and storage section of settings, but they will not run.
I tried running Amon_ra UID mismatch, and Ext fix.

It shouldn't, could just be a small slight random bug.

Are you able to move the apps to the sd card? Use titanium backup to do so, but only move user apps, and see if that works or does anything.
weird issue arises... When i try to re-download and install an app that i once had, launcher Pro, i get an error stating incompatable software version...
Also, titanium backup lists all of the apps that are missing, but they have a strikeout line through them.
That's awkward, let me think, and for titanium backup, have you tried running 'problems'?
yep... even in hopes of fixing this i bought the titanium full key.... still no luck

[Q] pre rooting question

I just got my new 16mb SIII from Sprint. I have my old evo 4g and the 64mb xd card that's in it, is the one I'm going to use in the new SIII . No card came in the new phone. I suppose I will have to wipe the card, then do I need to partition the card? Is this something I can do in recovery? I plan on using stock rom for now.
Another question I have is: this is a brand new phone right out of the box. Should I set up my accounts on the phone first, then root, or the other way around? I actually have more questions I just didn't know whether to put them in one post, or do multiple posts.
setup accounts, then root. wipe and format sd to fat32. I would install card before you setup accounts, the system & some apps use external sd.

another question
Before I take out the card from the old phone would it be a good idea to make a copy of all the files on the phone?
About the memory card once I wipe it do I have to format it fat 32 before I put it in the phone?

no, wiping card will allow new phone to make its own needed folders. On some phones, even ringtones you add are in a different folder.
Well I guess really you don't have to format it as long as its wiped clean and still in fat32 format. Seems Windows has some issues with some sd cards.

let me try that again
What I meant was would it be a good idea to make a copy of all the files on the old phone before I wipe the card that is now in it. before I wipe it and move it to the new phone?

yes, then wipe card, install in new phone, should make some folders on its own. media folders or files you added can then be added back.

lost all my installed apps and files after sd card partition

Hi
I have just partitioned my sd card through recovery mode, and when it rebooted, all my apps had gone, the icons are still there though. How can I get these back? Also my photos etc. I didnt backup the SD card properly, so cannot get them from a backup
Thanks in advance
when you say "I didnt backup the SD card properly", does this mean you didn't back it up at all?
partitioning wipes the sd card, so if you don't have a backup of it, then all your photos will be gone unfortunately. there's not much we can do to recover these. i'm guessing some of your apps were manually moved to sd card, which is why some of them have disappeared as well.
which recovery were you using? clockworkmod recovery for desire doesn't make the best partitions, also uninstall rom manager if you were using it. i would recommend repartitioning your sd card with 4ext recovery (requires s-off) or gparted, search for guides.
then reinstall your apps which don't appear through google play. if you're lucky the app data should still be saved, so things like game saves etc will still be there.
you also have to make sure you're actually using the new partition. i don't know which custom rom you're using if any? it may have an a2sd script built in, so when you reinstall apps they'll go to the ext partition. otherwise you may need to use terminal commands to activate it, or flash a separate script. check and search the rom thread...use another app like 'diskusage' to browse your partitions.
Thanks for your reply

I tried using a file recovery program, but could only recover a few files, is there no way I can recover files from a formatted card?

Once information is deleted, you cannot recover it all back.

Problem external sd

I have a problem with external SD. It does not "see" the PC. Neither Windows 10 nor Linux (kubuntu) I use. Before I saw the internal memory and SD separately. I also noticed how the es file explorer I am using does not let me make a new folder on the external SD While in the internal memory there is no problem. I am in Oreo 8, root. I wonder why it started to happen suddenly while before I did not have a problem.

Did you perhaps formatted the external SD as additional "internal storage" ?
I'm afraid that if I format it as internal I will lose all my data. The bad thing is that I can not read the PC

You will indeed lose all data on the SD card but why would you format it as internal ? If you don't need it than don't, you can't just simply put it back to external. Are you running a custom rom ?

Rom this https://is.gd/wJx1i4
Yes it is the truth that I do not care to make it like internal. I do not care. The data is interesting to me. What I can not understand is what it did not look like! So, suddenly, you stopped showing on your PC and I can not create a new folder, renaming it, copying anything. Something changed. Something is blame. I tried other file explorers and everywhere the same. I would say the card is broken. But that is not the case. I have read on the forum that in general HTC 10 has problems with SD. Perhaps I will finally sacrifice my data, and with a great deal of difficulty I am gathered again.
I'll be crazy! With a heavy heart I decided to shape the SD and let me sacrifice the data. However, while I was informed by the system that I will lose the data, the configuration was made and nothing changed. Envelopes were all in their place, and the same problems as creation-copy-move-rename. What the hell is going on?
Why didn't you take it out of the phone and into a card reader ? Your posts are hard to follow and understand what you are doing exactly.....
It sounds like a read - write conflict, i would dirty reflash the rom. What happens when you enter TWRP and plug in the phone, does it see internal and SD card ?

Yes the TWRP sees the SD card. As well as es file explorer. It's not the same as HTC's file explorer. He DOES NOT SEE IT. I also installed an app fix card while viewing it as follows / mnt / media_rw / 89BD-1702. Also Vfat32. However, it can not control it. Reverse the inner well. I will try to put it in a card reader on the PC and I will tell you the result.

Well ... I put SD on Windows to shape it! Nothing! I put SD on Linux for configuration! Nothing! Both were unable to do so. I installed SD formatter and Mimi tool partition! They did nothing! They were not shaping, not deleting, nothing was done. So I threw it in the garbage and bought a new one. I'm wasting my time for something more creative. Thanks for everything.
