Evo, Evo Shift, or wait for the dual cores?

After having a hero for over a year it is now time for it to retire. After reading about several revisions to hboot, hardware, and software there seems to be a bit of confusion (for me).
I'm asking for your input. Should I just jump in and get an Evo or wait until CES and see what's coming down the road?

Depends, but it was around middle of January that speculation started for the Evo and we heard about the mysterious A9292 Supersonic, but not much else was known about it. Still, I don't expect Sprint to come out with a device that's significantly better than the Evo until June or later. Dual core smartphones haven't really been released in any country. Snapdragon devices were released around November 2009. You can bet that that duallies will come out in Europe and Asia as a GSM phone at least 3-6 months before a manufacturer pushes out a CDMA device to the states.

The Hero is only good for a year?

The thing is, if you wait til CES then 6-9 months after that, there'll be something else better coming up and you'll want that. I say pick up the EVO now - there's still room to grow for the EVO with gingerbread, and there might not be a radical change in the smartphones that come out next year. 2010 was a pretty big year, all across the industry with Froyo, 4G, 4"+ screens, 1GHz processors, etc. Of course, every year something new comes out, but across the industry 2010 had so many changes I can't see them really topping that for 2011. Especially since we really need battery technology to catch up to handset technology at this point. My guess is that there will be something wildly innovative in 2011 (maybe we'll all be walking around with pads and bluetooths instead of smartphones). But that's just my guess.

The hero is still a good little phone and works great a year later. There's a premier upgrade available, burning a hole in my pocket.

Here's my thinking:
The EVO is not future proof but it's not that bad because of CM. It's biggest gaping bottleneck is the GPU and 3.0 looks like it's bringing full on HW acceleration, so it may or may not run on the EVO favorably. I wouldn't take the risk based off of my impression of the 3D gallery (which is HW accelerated and does not run 100% smoothly in the EVO). IMO you should pass on the EVO 4G.
The EVO Shift is a whole lot safer. The HW in it is (or at least should be) very, very similar in performance to the Nexus S, so that considered, I think it's safe to say that it'll run any App or Android version that you throw at it for at least a year - year and a half. Being a HTC product you'll also get a lot of community dev here on XDA and on other sites. I think if you want a new phone now, it's a safe phone to get. The only question mark is whether it has a FFC which may or may not be important to you (but with the inevitable drop of GTalk video chat, I think it should be).
Dual cores: if you want to wait for the latest and greatest be prepared to wait forever.

Yup, the first gen Snapdragon is from 2009 and it's GPU is ancient by current standards -- for comparison even the original Droid's PoweVR SGX 530 GPU was better. The shift should have the smaller, more energy effecient second gen Snapdragon/Scorpion CPU and the newer Adreno GPU that is roughly 3-4 times better.
Also note how I said that the EVO was good but not guaranteed to be as future proof? I'd rather recommend the phone that is worth having in the long run.

Seeing as most people have a phone 1-2 yr tops, the EVO will be just a relevent after 2 years as it was when it was released. Will run great on gingerbread and honeycomb as it does today. Also the shift is not even released and will be outdated before it is. The next round of releases will be dual core and by the time they are ready to hit the streets, the shift will be history.

My one and only observation is that the EVO can chug on the 3D gallery which is HW accelerated and for simple things too - like opening the menu. will that also be the case with Honeycomb? I don't know but should any new customer take the risk?

If you say so, running CM6 on mine and I have no chug while running the 3D gallery or any other app. So not sure what you mean.

Of course you don't. The EVO is the most perfect phone ever made, there will never be a more advance phone. Ever. I must have been dreaming when I bought my parents the Optimus S (which has the same GPU but runs at a lower resolution), played around with the 3D gallery app and saw that it was 60 FPS smooth while my EVO was running at under 30 FPS for certain actions. Yeah, that must of been it.
Look, I'm giving my recommendation. Live with it. Make you own and let the OP decide.

I picked up the EVO for literally the exact same reasons. Everybody knew before the phone was released that it was running a QSD8650. Asus ran it in their EeePc middle of last year, and its been available to manufacturers since 2008...not exactly state of the art. Plus the adreno200 chip is terrible. I doubt anyone here bought the EVO thinking they were getting the top tier in cpu performance lol. Not trying to piss anyone off, but comeon the cpu in the EVO is halfassed compared to current OMAP, Hummingbird, or second gen snapdragons.
At this point honestly I would wait, not for dual core, but simply for Sprint to release something with a second gen processor. To my knowledge the LG Star is the only announced dual core phone at the moment. Its gonna be a bit before we see OEMs dropping dual core phones left and right.

How is the Shift gonna be outdated before its released? We dont even know whats in it...and by that logic, the EVO was outdated before it was released as well.

Actually we do know whats in it, its all over the web, and yes the EVO was outdated just as is every smartphone released at any point in time. Manufactures always have the next one lined up prior to releasing any phone.

I was in the same boat but upgraded to EVO almost 2 weeks ago. The way I look at it is, with annual upgrades, why not?

The EVO is 6 months old and the Shift is set to be released in about 3 weeks, that's why. Just sayin'.

I say if you can get the optimus S with your premier upgrade for free. get it.....and fleabay it. I did that and made a cool $245. Pocket the money and wait till CES and at least see whats coming out, if nothing peaks your interest then fork in an extra $100 or so and buy a brand new EVO outright on ebay (EVO maybe even cheaper at that point...)
Upgrades arent all about getting a new phone then and there, sometimes you gotta just buy something to "use" up your upgrade and sell the phone that will bring you back the best return. That way your upgrade renews itself quicker and you made some $$$ on the side... my 2 cents if you want to put in a little work.

After seeing all the specs on this phone, and some hands on video, I am pretty dissapointed with the wait. There are phones out now that pretty much rival all aspects of the Nexus - except the ICS. In a month or so, ICS will be available to the the other phones. When it is, it will put the Nexus on par with them (or a notch below).

Because of the ****ty carrier update system.
Personally Id by an Amaze 4g today if the stupid piece of crap carrier and HTC werent in the way of me getting Android 4.0. As it stands pretty much the only way you get to use it is by getting a GN or waiting 2-3 months for decent roms to come out.
Again. Since Google refuses to mandate min. time frames for carrier/OEM updates this means noone has a clue when they can get a major OS update. Making GN the only choice for months.
The HD screen is the second biggest factor , I havent seen any comparison to a QHD screen so dont know if its as big a deal as Im making it out to be.

The display, the OS, and the fact that it's a Nexus device. Win/Win/Win.

For me it's not having an annoying overlay. Touchwiz and Sense are ok, but I'd much rather have vanilla Android.

The Nexus line is not suppose to be "top of the line" spec phones.
But to answer your question, the Galaxy Nexus comes with ICS, that's why everyone wants it.
To put things into perspective. I bought my G2x a few month ago, and it shipped with Froyo, with a promised update to Gingerbread. This was many, many months after Gingerbread was released.
Typically, phones won't see the latest android OS a few month after the OS has been announced. So if you want the latest OS, you need to go with a Nexus device.

1.) ICS
2.) Likely to have a huge developer base
3.) Hardware fairly optimized for software (and according to: http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/17/2568348/galaxy-nexus-review , its blazing fast)
4.) 720p HD Screen (again according to the above link and also http://mobilesyrup.com/2011/11/17/galaxy-nexus-review-part-1-hardware-overview-video/ although the screen is pentile, it still is amazing)
5.) Vanilla Android
6.) ???
7.) Profit
Now, I can see why some people might not want to buy this phone because of the following three reasons:
1.) Low-standard GPU - could become obsoleted fairly quickly (really old GPU) and I highly doubt a lot of games in the future could run on this device
2.) Although the hardware is fast now, in a few months from now it may not be as fast in comparison to other devices. (Remember CES 2011 with the introduction of dual core smartphones? From then on, the single core processor phones were essentially obsoleted + it is rumoured that there will be quad core phones later this year - http://mobilesyrup.com/2011/11/15/r...ndroid-4-0-with-a-2-5ghz-quad-core-processor/)
3.) The battery life may not be great with this phone

that's exactly what it is a Developer reference phone for ICS
that's why you no longer see the state of the art hardware included anymore since Nexus S

I see all your points.
I guess I think Google/Samsung/Verizon, just dragged thier feet too long on getting it to market IMO. I think higher spec phones are just months away, so the only thing cutting edge here is ICS. Just my opinion.
Now, I do have the Nexus on the way, but I am just not going to be sleepless over it. I just sold my Galaxy Note (too big to function as a phone for me, but one hell of an information device), but I will always wonder how it would have performed with ICS versus GB.

I think the nexus phones are developer phones so are set at being what google expect the average phone to be in the middle ics lifetime. After all theres no point developing on a phone when no other phone comes close to the specs. The only benefit really is it gets the latest android first rather than waiting for manufacturer releases or even later for mobile operator releases.
Personally I'm still undecided and also considering the RAZR or waiting to see what comes out in the next few months. There is no phone which makes me think I must have it at all costs at the moment. SGS2 is meh, HTC XE looks nice but doesn't excite, only RAZR and Nexus I'm considering though I'd consider the rezound if it was available in the uk.

I wouldn't go for the RAZR, as many reviews I have seen put it on a bad place compared to the Nexus (E.g. www.theverge.com)

For me it's the screen and ICS ....Why the crappy gpu and only 5meg camera and sub par audio is beyond me.....I don't play many games but the gpu in the s2 woulda been nice..I sold my Vibrant and need a phone now might not wait and just get gs2..The gpu in the nexus is very dissapointing ...Why the newer high end device would be speced lower than the older s2 is just dumb imo.
I did find a store that imports them and is expected the 28th for $749 shipped......The gs2 will cost me $444 local tmo.....Decisions Decisions!

Until the quad cores come out much later in 2012 the galaxy nexus will mostly be top dog. The next batch of devices will all be dual core 1.5ish ghz, some will get some version of 720p screens some will not. We should see that clear through summer until the galaxy hd/3.
That's a pretty good run for a device add to it the google experience and well it should hold its own for two years easily. IMO the only people getting screwed are the people buying the gs2 now.
As long add it's out before the end of January on AT&T (unlikely) I'll buy the galaxy nexus otherwise I'll wait for summer.

Well now it looks like the GS2 has already been ported, so maybe months of wait will be reduced to weeks to get a usable ICS rom on some of the better devices. Cancelled my preorder(Nexus) and am thinking of purchasing another Note !

I'd like to refer you to here where they go beyond speculation and actually have the device so aren't pulling things out of thin air like 99% of the people here.
For people who tl;dr:

Just like how we don't compare ATI and Nvidia cards by their GFLOP's nor triangles per second, we should keep in mind that performance is dependant on both hardware and drivers - and varies with games just as some games naturally play better with Nvidia cards and some perform better with ATI/AMD cards. Drivers make a world of difference. Looks like Google/PowerVR/TI have done their job.

Once again, MP means jack **** EXCEPT picture size. Do your research before you comment. As some comparisons have said its only a little below the iPhone 4s in quality, and guess what? That's not due to MP.

How future-proof is the Galaxy Nexus?

Hey everyone!
My qyestion is how future proof the Galaxy Nexus is. Im not talking about gaming or things like that, I just wonder if the hardware is capable of 1-2 major versions of Android and if the dualcore lasts that long?

Who knows where phones will be in the future. Many phones that were released in 2010/2011 can run ICS easily. These phones are powerful devices and will be future proof for a while. Just enjoy what you have today which is probably the best Android device to date.

Not future-proof at all.
Everybody knows that, when the aliens establish first contact this year and bring us the gift of positronic computing, our complete technology will be outdated by the factor 10.000. Your GN will be useless after this.

The Galaxy Nexus will feel like a dinosaur in 2 years. Wait a few more months for this years crop of phones to be released. Some of them already put the GN to shame.
Modern tech gets old quickly. Be happy with what you get and don't read up on any new stuff once you get it or you'll feel buyers remorse every day.

With much luck, we will have updates for longer than 2 years. My old milestone had got 1 year updates. So the nexus is relatively future-proof compared to other phones because it is directly driven with updates by Google.

The GNEX's future in this regard is great compared to all Android phones available today.
The hardware will be outdated soon.. but not so much for it to become obsolete any in the upcoming 2 years.
The GNEX's 720p screen will hold out a long time, probably will be topped after the GS III is released. staying the 2nd best for a long time.
The softkeys design, i'm not sure how or if other Android will follow such design soon. But it's kind of a "futuristic" feature in the GNEX (the ultimate phone in the far future will have one hell of a bezel-less screen all in one piece)
Another very important thing, is the Jellybean OS.
Just look at how great things recently been for long time Nexus S users. They received an official ICS release before any other phone of it's age.. making the Nexus S better in some areas than newly introduced high-end Gingerbread phones. It's going to be the same with the Galaxy Nexus, probably receiving JB OS before other new phones then and reviving it's usability.

THINK of it this way. The Nexus One was super future proof. Lasted through a few different versions of Android. Started with Eclair and ended with the latest version of Gingerbread, and I'm sure there is dev work to get the thing running ICS. I'd say that like every other Nexus phone, it should last through a minimum of 2 full versions of Android. So in my theory the Galaxy Nexus should last up to at least December 2013 - January 2014, if not longer. Then again technology doubles every 2 years so maybe it might be the end of the road once Dec 2013 rolls around when the letter "K" Android operating system expects to launch.

just what i was gonna say! the Nexus One lasted 2.1 to 2.3 flawlessly! 3 total android versions (and i bet ICS will work just as good on it when its ready)....the Nexus S was 2.3 and now 4.0......ICS is for dual core phones but the Nexus S still runs it super nicely! I have no doubt it be running the "J" software flawlessly as well! the Galaxy Nexus should last a good 2 years! that is why Nexus phones are the way to go, in my opinion......none of this "ill wait for the next phone" BS that people keep putting themselves thru! U can have your quad core bullshi*, but without the software, it wont matter!

The answer is none of them are future proof.
It should hold up perfectly find and have excellent developer support for at least the next 2 years. More than most other general release phones. Considering most of the good stuff (Galaxy 3) wont' be released state side until fall if we are lucky the nexus will be top dog for a long time.

Why not put it this way... the screen and/or plastic casing are more likely to go before the Galaxy Nexus cannot be supported in a future OS update.

Hardware, no of course not. No hardware is future proof.
Firmware, not only will we get the newest Android versions, we will get it FIRST.
Last year I told my cousin to buy a Nexus S, she was always happy with it. She is NOT a phone geek like we are.. So ICS gets pushed ota to her in Dec2011 (Nexus S got first ICS ota of any phone), I call her and say "expect to recieve a big update to your phone soon" she says back to me, "I already got it, it's like I have a BRAND NEW PHONE!!" end of story.

Google itself said all phones will get updates till 18 mo. Whether it gets crapped up by carrier OEM policies or not,but a stock Google phone will get full updates for at least 18 mos. After that,it remains usable for another 18 months. For example,the Droid,hero & g1 still run fine. Yes you can't play shadowgun or gta on them,but they do run fine. So its fine for 3 years usually. Unless you are a phone fanatic. I know I am.

Well all know that the whole 18 month thing is a sham. LG and many other manufacturers signed that agreement. You do not think they're actually gonna update the G2x a "Google experience" phone, do you? They couldn't even get a proper Gingerbread build; it was still running a Froyo kernel.

[Q] Life expectancy of the One X

I know many of us are yet to recieve our phones but my girlfriend just asked me how long the One X will be considered a top of the range phone for. Will we see out the length of our contracts with it or will something else come along in the next year and trump it?

There's always something that will pop up that will be better. There's no possible way to see nothing better than the one x for two years.

Well I've been reading up the Samsung s3 and its going to be on level par to the one x but its said the one x display will still be better than the s3 which isn't due out till end of the year and tbh I've had my dhd for 18 months and yet in all that time I've not found another phone that would interest me until now the one x is going to hold its ground for at least 12 months then start losing its thrill but I reckon it will be between the 12 month and 18month Mark where something else will be the next big thing.

Since 2010, HTC themselves have gone from the Desire >Desire HD >Sensation/SensationXE >One X. Even if you ignore the minor change in the sensation range, that's four new flagship phones in less than two years.
You can bet your bottom dollar that the One X will be trumped before the year is out, but that's just the way the market is (if it wasn't, the One X probably wouldn't exist today).
All you can do is pick the phone that's right for you and enjoy it while you can. There will always be something else around the corner.
That's just my opinion of course

As with any electronics, just get the best that you can afford at the time you want it. That's really all anyone can do. New models of phone, TV, HiFi, etc are out all the time, no question HTC will have a new 'flagship' model out within 12 months from previous track record.
My reasoning for getting the HTC One X is that my Desire that I bought 2 yr ago has held up pretty well until recently, also thanks to good ROM support here. The fact that this is a Tegra 3 phone and also that I had good experience with my previous HTC phone helped the decision that it should last fairly well.
Other phones such as GS3 might have some things slightly better/worse but I don't expect it to be night/day differences.

I would not be surprised if the Galaxy s3 processor doubled many of the ONE's benchmarks. So what? In the real world it will make little difference.
For at least the next year, both phones will still be much faster than 70% of other androids and both will run everything as smoothly as an iPhone. The processors in both the ONE and the S3 will in 2 years time be 5 or 10 times slower than the latest processors, but the difference in user experience will be trivial. Both will still run buttery smooth because the demands of android will not increase at anything like the same rate.
There will also be many more wifi hotspots to compensate for the lack of 4g and many apps will use cloud servers rather than the phone for processing. This will make benchmarks matter even less. In other words, by 2014 the ONE and S3 will look obsolete in terms of benchmarks but will still work really well for all the tasks they currently perform.
By 2014, both will be struggling with some games. More importantly, they will be lacking the new killer features from 2013 and 2014 such as 4g, light field camera, desktop mode, and built in Google TV. These will remain on the drawing board throughout 2012 but may become premium features by 2014. They will require new hardware components that probably wont be found in any phone that is built in 2012.
This is the bottom line: the ONE will not become obsolete due to any lack of processing power or benchmarks (which is all that the S3 will challenge it on) but rather to the lack of new features that are still in the development phase but will eventually require new and additional hardware components that neither the ONE or S3 have.

HTC changed their approach this year, dont think they will release anything else other than special editions of these. Maybe chuck Beats headphones in the box and give it a different lick of paint.
They want to rebuild the brand, get it plugging higher numbers again. Im just surprised they opted for different CPUs either side of the world, strange marketing move that one. They should have just stuck to Tegra 3 and plugged the gaming support or something.

Except Tegra3 can't handle 4G without a separate radio (which kills the battery). Hence S4 for the LTE/4G versions, and Tegra3 elsewhere since quad core sounds better
Real world, both processors are near enough to equally capable, with each excelling in particular areas.

It really is dependent on what you consider a long life expectancy. I'm still using my HD2 and love the fact that I can flash so many different OS's and Roms to it. Lets be honest and HD2 with a good ROM and a huge/fast SD card gives the Sensation a run for it's money.
The One X will be one of those phones that will hold it's ground for years to come because of its raw power (although 1GB of RAM really?? ya could have upped it for a brother).

Kinda confused how some of you are saying the SGSIII is going to have a worse screen etc.....and I highly doubt they are going to wait until the end of the year to release it. Would be shooting themselves in the foot. Not like Apple where if they don't release something, they'll be fine for a while. Everything is pointing to a release soon, it's in carrier testing in korea already. Plus, they want to get in on the marketing opportunity of the London Olympics which is going to be huge for promoting the phone and getting the worlds attention.
It's also rumored to have the SAMOLED HD Plus so idk how you know the One X screen is going to be better along with 20+ of people you've asked, they haven't even seen it yet.
As for phone longevity. The One X will certainly become overtaken by other phones by the end of this year. Maybe make some reasonable arguments and posts. Instead of just calling other people trolls. I didn't even say anything that made me sound like a Samsung fanboy, and thats because I'm not. I look at the specs, the facts, and base decisions around that.
The One X is good, but the One XL is better IMO. Tegra 3 is running four cortex-A9 cores built on the 40-45nm fabrication process. It's the same cores being used since the HTC Sensation and SGSII.
Look at Krait, running a brand new architecture built on the 28nm fabrication process. That's a pretty big gap, and it's showing in most of the benchmarks (though benchmarks should be taken with a grain of salt, they're a good hint at relative performance). 28nm fabrication means, less heat, less energy, while keeping about the same level of performance. But Krait has more pipelines etc...resulting in it being much faster than the Snapdragon S3.

How long until you believe this phone becomes obsolete? I hear a lot of people (and read them, too) say that this is probably the first phone they'd go the full 2 years with...however, being realistic, when was the last time you made it two years with the same device? I haven't gone two years with the same device since the original Razr was in style.
I know, I know, at 2gb ram, dual core, etc, this phone is far from becoming obsolete, so I'll rephrase that question for you: What feature on a future phone would make you make the switch from your Galaxy S3? Or are you confident enough that there will be no other phone in the next two years that can replace it?

I don't know that I have a feature that I would jump ship for at this time ... but I wonder if, in 2 years, the size and use of applications will make even 2 gb of ram obsolete?
I'm in the camp that I can see keeping this phone throughout contract, but it is hard to tell if, in 1.5 to 2 years time, 2 GB of ram is actually not enough to keep up with programs/OS requirements. I don't necessarily think so, but remember back when 256MB of ram was a lot? That wasn't TOO long ago.
But, since I don't use my phone for intense gaming, I see this phone in my future for a long while - at least until the sandwich-making feature phone is announced.

I don't think it being obsolete would be the problem. I'll just want something newer at some point before two years. My Evo 3D could have easily lasted another year for my uses, but I still got a GS3.

Ill keep mine the whole 2 years (well 20 months or whatever it is) just like I have done with every other phone. While there may be something new and better out if you are always waiting for that you will never have a phone. That and the cost to buy phones off contract now are more than I want to spend.

It will become obsolete sometime between Q4 2012 & Q2 2013. Qualcomm are already prepping the S4 QUAD for tablets this year and its performace is roughly x2 the Dual S4, and far exceeds the Exynos 4212+Tegra 3 if I read correctly. Technically the GPU in all Android phones are obsolete or slow in comparison to Apple's latest offerings(Imaginations is like a high-end Nvidia in the mobile-space, Adreno mid, and Tegra mid-high).
For some reason I feel someone is gonna make a 1080P phone, which is useless btw--just had to throw that out there for those that were unaware. Cores cores and more cores will probably be one of the more popular acts we see though, and 2GB-4GB Ram will be standard. Unfortunately I wish these companies would realize they need to relax b/c optimizations are practically nonexistent with Stock Android phones. I hate to constantly reference Apple & WP7/8, though it's a must. When i hear people telling me stuff like the HOAX or S3, or whatever dual/quad lags--lag. Seriously, these phones are using CPUs that theoretically should outperform the 4S/iPd3, but that's normally not the case. We are getting to a point where everyone is rushing to get out the latest and greatest, however all the hardware don't mean **** when the software can't match it.

I have been so disappointed with the radio in my t-mobile s3 because I cannot stream music without it cutting out constantly. I am actually going to demand a microsim adapter from them and return to my vibrant. If my data sucks so bad that I cannot consistently stream music in the car, what's the point of owning this without calling it just a pda.

And it only took around 2 months for it to become obsolete then, not ideal in the world I would prefer, but I suppose it can't be helped. This phone could had been so much more if Samsung stuck with the SGX instead of adopting the Mali-400. It would had been so cool to have the CPU part of the S4 combined with a dual/quad SGX543/544 like the ipad/iphones. Those GPUs outperform even the silly Tegra 3 & its fancy 16 cores(which are just 16 weak cores throw together ). I don't know what Sammy or Qualcomm were thinking about. Everyone is just dropping the ball all over the place these days.

I'm not really sure, mainly because I'm not entirely vested in this phone as it is, so it probably wouldn't take much, provided I could sell this one and cover the majority cost of a replacement phone.
I think something with sufficient horsepower to run some things which even this phone can't, but that remains to be seen. One thing that could almost definitely sell me is a flagship phone like this one that has a hardware keyboard. The problem is that I'm in the minority, so a flagship Galaxy S or Nexus phone is highly unlikely to have one, and I care ever so slightly more about the fact that flagship phones have thriving development communities, whereas one-off phones, which I may like more, won't get the same kind of attention from either developers or manufacturers.

I'll keep my phone until my contract is up. I always have (except for my BB Storm which I *****ed about until they upgraded me). My OG Droid Inc lasted for 2 years until I got this S3 and it was still in like new condition. I was tired of the small screen, but the devs here kept the phone fresh.
Hell, part of me misses my Inc. (Love this phone, though.)

Do you mean the dual core 800MHz in the 4S? That is Apple's current offering.

An old Startac is obsolete because it It can no longer be used. My old Motorola RAZR is not obsolete because I can still use it
for it's intended purpose.
I would say the phone will not be obsolete for many years to come. How can a device me considered obsolete if there is a phone
with a faster CPU or more memory? The phone can still be used for it's intended purpose.
My S3 can not do anything my Vibrant couldn't (with the same mechanicals), it only does it better.

Actually when I said latest offering I was referencing the iPad 3. And actually I stated the GPU in Android devices are all obsolete(as in not current in terms of power). The Legendary SGX543 MP4 in the iPad 3 mops the floor of every single Android device to ever touch this world, even the soon to be made Adreno 320 in the new S4 QUAD(snapdragon) fails to match the creature. Even the 4S' SGX543 MP2 is barely phased by the Mali 400, Adreno 225, and Tegra 3's laughable 16 core toy. I have no doubt that the S3's CPU is superior at all.

Obsolete (by my definition) doesn't mean that a newer/better product exists. Every device would be a obsolete within a few months if that were the case. To me obsolescence means that it either doesn't perform modern tasks acceptably or a new product feature is so desirable that you simply don't want your old device anymore.
We all know the S3 will handle Jelly Bean beautifully. I'm pretty confident it will be good for Key Lime Pie as well. I got close to 2 years from my OG Epic (Galaxy S1) and only upgraded short of 2 years because I could. With the strong CM/AOKP support this phone has, I'm fully confident I'll have this phone the full 2 years. Unless I break it, heh.
