WIFI Tethering stopped working - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Some months ago I rooted my dad's dInc using the "unrevoked" tool, and I set him up with the Wireless Tethering app. Everything worked.
He tried to use it this past weekend for the first time in a while and it's no longer working. I tried Barnacle, and I have the same issue.
The network shows up, and a laptop can connect to it, but it says "no internet access", and it looks like it doesn't get an IP either.
The Wireless Tethering app never notifies that someone has connected either. Weird stuff...
I'm thinking one of the updates that HTC pushed to the phone broke something. Anyone have any suggestions?

Is it the newest version?

edit: Seems like I had to uninstall and reinstall newest version and now it's working =\. Fixed. Thanks..

[Q] Wifi tether not working on evo 2.2

I am not certain on how many people share the same situation but here's what's going on. I rooted my evo with unrevoked 3 and flashed unrevoked forever, I'm not that new to modifying my evo but when I try to use any wifi tether they seem not to work in any way. The wifi appears on the computer but no connection as in to loading a webpage is possible, the sale happens when attempting to make a connection with my iPad from the evo NO CONNECTION. I gave a visit to the wifi tether app web pages and they only seem to support 2.1 well known as eclair. Can someone help? What is the real glory in turning s off and rooting if your main mission as of obtaining free wifi tether cannot be obtained? XDA DEVELOPERS you guys are awesome when it comes to mobile solutions and even more with android, please lend me a hand ( not literally ) to be able to go on with my normal life and use free wifi tether.
download "wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre8.apk" and see if that works for you. it works for me. YOu can google that with the quotes and you should find it
Thank you sir!
I have a stock EVO that I ran unrevoked on last night, it rooted fine. I downloaded wireless tether for root users and on mac it shows the ssid but when I connect I get no internet, it says, "AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet.". The IP I get is 169.254.20.214
Is anyone else able to connect to their Android Hotspot with a Mac?

Where did you get the wireless tether app? From the market? If so, uninstall it and try one of the later versions from the google code page (pre7 or pre8). I'm running the 2.0.5-pre7 version and have no problem connecting a mac (well, hacintosh to be completely accurate) to it but I never could get the market version (2.0.2) to work.

They're up to pre11 already???
I just installed pre9 less than two weeks ago and that was the newest at the time!
I have trouble too. What I do is run it and turn it off. Repeate two or three times and finally it will let me surf using my iPad.
Will have to try pre11!

[Q] Rooted 2.2 and wireless tether on the Dinc

I'm trying to run wireless tether (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/) on a Droid Incredible which has been updated to stock 2.2 and then rooted. I'm running wireless tether 2.0.5 pre 9 and everyting seems to work and I can connect to the phone from my laptop (running Win XP), but then I can maybe sometimes load a single web page and then I get timed out connections. It seems that DNS resolution is working as I get answers from nslookup in a command window.
Is anyone else having problems getting wireless tethering working? The web pages I've found on the subject seem to be from before Froyo came to the Dinc, even the Google project page doesn't mention 2.2.

Have not tried Wireless Tether with 2.2 since I can use the 3G Wirelecc Hotspot that comes with 2.2. All you need to do is this:
1. On your phone, bring up the dialer and dial ##778. This will load EPST.
2. Select EDIT.
3. Enter 000000 for the password.
4. Select SECURITY.
5. Select the username that has [email protected].
6. Edit the username to read [email protected] (delete "dun.").
7. Click the back button to return to the list.
8. Select M.IP DEFAULT PROFILE.
9. Repeat steps 5 and 6.
10. Click on MENU and select COMMIT.
You will not be charged for its use.
Thanks, I just tried that and got it working, but I thought that using the Google code was a little safer that it would never be accidentally switched back to paid mode.
I also noticed that when I tried to change the ssid or password that whenever I left the config screen and came back they were back to default values. Have you been able to change the 3g hotspot ssid/password?

Yu have to have a computer link first and then it will keep the settings. Do not know why they set it up this way.
Thanks, got it changed now - in fact I'm using that connection now.
Does this mean the wireless tether project is totally obsolete?

No, for those who do not have 2.2 yet, it is still an option (and a good one). Some people just like using it over the 3g Wireless Hotspot. I have used both and prefer the 3G Wireless Hotspot. I have no issues with it and get easy connects.
Is the equivalent procedure for the Droid X known yet? I've got a friend who just got his X updated to Froyo.

I do not know. Do a search for ESPT for the Droid X and see if it has a simular setup. If it does, the same changes should work for it.
Any updates on this? I'm on a rooted 2.2 incredible and wifi tether will not play with my ipad. Based upon what I've read, the issue surrounds the fact that the mac address refreshes on the app while the ipad does not like this and most ad hoc connections. I've heard that activaiton hack for the stock mobile wifi is no longer valid. Anyone else tethering?
Thanks,
Tremont
The stock 3g hack still works also wireless tether pre15 works perfect for me

3g Hot spot
I just got my DINC and installed PDAnet to thether and have found that the hotspot works, but doesn`t allow me to go to secure sites, when I do this it brings up the Verizon page for subscribing for $20. I have done nothing other than install
PDAnet( the free version).
Zexel, follow the instructions on comment #2 of this thread and you'll be all better.

[Q] rooted, wireless tether connected but...

I have my EVO rooted and installed wireless tether. My G Tab I can see the (*)android tether but it wont obtain an IP address.
which version of wireless tether? pre8 and pre14 are working depending on phone hw version/sw version
mine wont work either, it last did on tuesday when i was using it, now has not today yet, i did upgrade from pre13 to pre14 to see if that would help, but to no avail, then i tried to upgrade further to pre15 and still nothing, having a feeling the flash update may have blocked whatever it was that allowed us to tether, but that is pure speculation, lol, wtf.
Just tried again to go from the evo to my tablet, and no go, tried to go from evo to laptop, no go, but device's detect but will not connect, on the evo it show's in wireless tether .4k down and .3k up, that is extremely lame, lol, someone please help figure this out.
Have you tried using Sprint hot spot? I access it free now that I am rooted....

it's not on the tab's side though, it's something to do with my evo, the evo itself is not working right.

Tethering issue

i have a droid incedible that is rooted but literally nothing is working as far as wireless tethering goes. i have tried wireless tether for root users and barnacle. Both broadcast the network but fail to connect me too them and provide internet. suggestions?
Have you tried the hot spot fix?

Yeah I've been unable to get tethering to work on my phone as well. The ##778 does nothing on my phone, perhaps they changed it in the newest ota update?

I noticed a problem with this the other day as well. My wireless tether (non-rooted) wasn't (and still isn't) working either. At first I couldn't get the ##778 to work, but I just did a soft reset and it at least accepted the ##778 command again.
Tether still doesn't work, though (argh).
same here, did the ##778 thing and i still have tethering issues even with the official app
A solution that worked for me was to create a folder in the root of the SD card named "android.tether" and place this file inside
edit:
(not allowed to post external links yet I guess, just google fw_bcm4329.bin and you'll find a modaco thread about it as the first result or if anyone can't find it I'll gladly send them a link via PM)
Once done uninstall wireless tether and reinstall it. After doing this I finally got the notification that clients were connecting to my phone, which I never got before and subsequently it didn't work.
Hope this helps

[SOLVED] Sprint USB Tethering

I know it's not wifi tethering, but hey this is a bandaid for me. Clockwork Mod Tether works perfect, regardless of if the play store says it's compatible.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether
Go nuts.
Have not tried the USB to PC side yet, but Easy Tether works for Bluetooth to my HP Touch pad running CM9. Used this on previous phones also but haven't had time to try on PC yet.
Sweet! Going to try this one later for sure!

I have to wait till I get home but there is an app in the play store called EasyTether and it will do usb tethering and bluetooth tethering to android tablets. I will try it when I get home.

I think I tried that one and got the usual error (in stock form). Give it a whirl and let us know though. I just started going down the list installing a bunch of tethering apps until I found one or a few that worked.
is this still working for you guys? reviews seems mixed on the play store
Mine connect and works fine.... But then it will randomly disconnect and I have to reconnect again.
Not sure what is going on. Did this with this and a separate usb tethering app.

Has anybody using this installed the ZV8 update on their phone?
If so any effect on USB tethering or still working as before?

I'm going to answer my own question and confirm that it still works post-update. I switched over to using the Wifi/USB Tether hack for a while, but am now back to using CWM Tether. In strong signal areas the hack works fantastic, but I find that out in the country with one bar it's very iffy. Perhaps this is an issue of the phone going in and out of data service and the connection not being restored gracefully when that happens? Whatever the case, CWM doesn't seem to have this same problem and maintains a fairly continuous connection without me having to restart my phone repeatedly.
