[Q] Phone stuck at white screen with green htc logo - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone (Desire HD) is stuck at the white screen with htc written in green. Here is what I did
clockworkmod 3.0.0.5
Rom is miui 1.1.22
1 - Did a nandroid backup
2 - installed full-wipe-1.3.zip
3 - installed miui 1.2.19
Rebooted, and everything booted up ok. Everything was fine and working at this stage. However I had no apps installed, and no contact info. I am guessing full wipe got rid of them all. I then
4 - did a restore of the nandroid image created in step 1 No erros were reported.
The image was restored, and I then rebooted the phone. Phone rebooted but is now stuck at the white screen. I waited around a minute, and removed the battery and then rebooted. Phone still stuck at white screen. Restored the image again, same thing.
Anybody know how I can restore the image I created in step 1?
I do have an older image on my pc. How can I get this image onto my phone? Maybe I could try restoring this image.

The backup should be on your MicroSD no?
Boot into Bootloader (hold down the volume down when powering on the device).
Select Recovery to enter CWM.
You know what to do from there!

The backup is on my sd card. I can select it, and it restores the image. I dont get any errors from the restore process. Once the image is restored I reboot my phone, thats when it gets stuck on the white screen with the green htc logo.

From fastboot flash an older version of clockwork not in the 3.0 series. It only works on 2.3 gingerbread roms. Then you'll be able to boot up.

This MIUI thread (see post 2), seems to think it does work with clockworkmod 3.0.0.5.

Thanks pwraggcan!!!!
I did what you suggested, albeit it wasnt as straight forward as it should have been. Installed rom manager and clockworkmod 2.5. I then restored an backup created with clockworkmod 3.0.0.5. I wasnt sure this would work, but it did .
The only problem is, that I have spent around 3hrs of messing around with my phone, whilst at work...so have a bit of catching up to do .
Thanks again

Glad to help.

Telus Desire freezes booting into Recovery

I have successfully rooted my Telus desire (Superuser app is available) , however everytime I try to flash a custom rom with rom manager it hangs when booting into recovery.
I get the HTC boot screen then a black bar appears at the top then the device shuts off. The only way to get it back is to remove the battery.
The first time I flashed just the regular unrevoked clockwork recovery but if I booted into recovery with that one I would have to clear storage to even get it to boot up again.
I just flashed Amon RA's and while I get the same black bar problem I still cant' boot into recovery.
I have tried to install older kernels and amon ra to no avail.
Please help!
Thanks!
I'm also thinking maybe I need to reflash back to stock and then try re-rooting again. I can't find a Telus stock rom as it is so new, can I flash any other carrier's?
Edit: it even freezes when I run unrevoked again, it goes through the process, says its done but the phone freezes.
I know exactly what your problem is. It's not that you are unable to boot into recovery, but that you cannot see the recovery options because you flash a clockwork recovery ROM that has no SLCD support.
I had this exact same problem. You can try the following steps. Leave the phone unplugged via USB as it may throw off the timing:
1. Hold volume down, then press and hold power for 5 seconds. This will get you to the HBOOT menu.
2. Wait 20 seconds so that the phone can complete the SD card check.
3. Press volume down once, then press the power button. This will select the Recovery option.
4. Volume down 5x. This should have you on the Nandroid option.
5. Optical button in. I'll call this 'enter' for the time being.
6. Volume down once, and press enter. This will select the Restore option.
7. Enter again to select the Nandroid restore point previously created by unrevoked3.
8. Volume down 7x and enter to confirm restoration.
9. Wait 7 minutes (I timed this) for the copying to complete, and press enter to reboot.
If all goes according to plan, this will have restored your original Telus ROM.
Now, to set up your Telus Desire properly:
1. Connect your phone to PC in mass storage mode or use a MicroSD reader. Download ROM and radio .zip to root directory of your SD card. DO NOT run unrevoked3 yet. DO NOT use the OpenDesire ROMs that are current at time of writing. They do not support SLCD at this time.
2. Download SLCD-specific recovery img from hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748618
3. Open unrevoked3, direct the program to use the image you just downloaded, and connect your Desire.
4. After some time, the phone will reboot into recovery mode.
5. Wipe the device
6. Use the update from .zip option to select ROM. After that's done, do the same with the radio zip file.
7. Reboot and you should boot properly into your new ROM.
YOU MUST use the updated SLCD Clockwork Recovery.
YOU MUSTN'T use ROM Manager from the Market. The recovery file it automatically downloads does not support SLCD.
Thank you so much that makes sense.
Its weird because other people with the Telus Desire have been able to flash leeroid. I failed your instructions the first time, but I will try again and keep you updated.
Thanks!!
I don't have a Desire but allow me to ask: If the phone is rooted (and boots up properly otherwise) but just has an inaccessible recovery, can you use flash_image to flash the recovery with SLCD support? This would reduce the bumbling-around-on-a-blank-screen factor.

This is what I did and I got it to work somehow.
What I did was I flashed the custom image, then it still didn't work.
Then I flashed the clockwork image from rom manager and then it worked for some reason!
Thanks guys, weird though!
Did you root your Telus Desire with these steps? I did and no problems at all!

No I didn't, thats why I had a problem, I solved it though with that custom recovery after all.
I HAVE A NEW PROBLEM THOUGH GUYS.
I partitioned my SD card through rom manager and now when I boot with the two partitions it stays stuck on the HTC boot screen. I removed the SD card and it booted fine, i erased my ext3 partition in windows and now it boots but I wanted to reinstall froyo with a2sd+ .
Also, I now get a triangle when I try to do things in rom manager saying that the update.zip can't be found.
This program is really pissing me off.
Help!
what i did that i think worked, was boot into fastboot,
Then through the android sdk fast boot
just pushed the SLCD recovery (renamed to recovery.img)
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
reboot bootloader
then go to recovery
it should work, it worked for me
THanks for the reply,
I'm all good.
Reflashed the custom image and all is well.

am I doing the above #4 on the white HTC screen? becausethat's what comes up after I select recovery option?
Don't bother with those steps. Just re-root with the custom SLCD image with unrevoked.
Thank you !

is there a fix to prevent this from happening?
i can randomly get into my recovery (it is the proper SLCD recovery image)
and i can install cyanogens rom.
however as soon, as i reboot or for example wipe my battery stats in the recovery, my phone just sticks at the HTC screen
Hi,
I fixed this problem when I reinstalled the Flash CloclworkMod Recovery in ROM Manager.

This is what happens to me as well. I dont know what Telus is but im on 3 (uk) with hboot 0.83 slcd.
this sticking at the htc screen has only started for me since i first wiped battery stats....although i was only running for 2 days previous it worked and rebooted fine before this wipe and now it is sporidic to say the least.
When i boot up with power+vol down, it checks my sd card and says something like cannot find img.
If i remove my sd card after it hangs and reboot, i can get past the htc screen everytime.
Perhaps the "wipe battery stats" option is broken on Telus Desires. What if it's looking to wipe some particular values in memory but it hits the wrong one?

Any chance for you to explain that a bit better? Not sure what you mean there. :/
Flash the file...then go into recovery to reflash a rom? Is that what you did?
After flashing the pb99img file, can you boot into recovery every time without that white screen of death?

[Q] Bootloop help

I'm having issues with a bootloop on the incredible after rooting using unrevoked 3 and making the mistake of choosing cyanogenmod as the recovery because I'm incredibly new at this. Now granted this isn't an issue, I have root access now and I'm able to assign superuser and the phone boots to what looks like the stock rom. However, I wanted to flash cyanogen 7 rc2 and it's giving me a lot of issues when I try to access the clockworkmod recovery screen. I downloaded the rommanager from the market and flashed the recovery to clockworkmod 3.0.0.8 as per a wiki online and tried to boot to recovery. from there it hits the HTC incredible screen, then flashes every 3 seconds rather than showing the green text it's supposed to show.
I still have S-on and unrevoked won't run properly again. Tried running the factory reset and it's another bootloop. I tried going through the steps for a "manual recovery file flash via cyanogen's wiki, but I'm running into errors.
Summary:
unrevoked 3.32 completed successfully even using the cyanogenmod rom as the recovery file.
Have root access, S-on, radio version ~.7.28
Can't flash back to stock due to bootloop
Can't factory reset due to bootloop
Can't get to clockworkmod recovery screen due to bootloop
phone able to boot to main screen with original
Ideal solution: get to clockworkmod recovery screen and install C7RC2
Any help appreciated!
Why do you think using ClockworkMod was a mistake? It's one of the better AOSP ROMs out there.
It sounds to me like you're probably going to have to download one of the stock RUUs to completely revert your phone to stock. You might have a corrupted recovery. You can't flash ClockworkMod or an alternative recovery via RomManager?
oh don't get me wrong, my huge problem here is that I can't get into recovery, and I didn't load clockworkmod initally, but it is (as rom manager says) my recovery image and it's just not working at all.
I tried going with a RUU and it wouldn't get into bootloader properly (just shows HTC on the screen till the the ruu times out) I'll try on a 32 bit machine when I get home. I was originally able to flash on that and unrevoked was giving me issues till I did a 32 bit xp attempt. Thanks for the response!
whoops, forgot to address your last point. Tried another version of clockwork and the RA_GNM 1.8.1 and neither stopped it from bootlooping rather than recovery screen.

I don't think unrevoked finish all The way because you should be s-off did you wait until it said "done"..... or did you stop when it said "this is a triumph"

Okay, from a 32 bit system has resolved the flashing back to a stock rom, I will update as to whether I can get into recovery and will wait until I am told "triumphant" this time around.
Will post an update in a bit if this was all that was necessary to fix the issue. Thank you all to have posted so far, please post if you think I'm missing something else.

No you need to wait till it says done sorry you misunderstood me......let it go till it says done and it stops completely..... because the last thing it does is flash the recovery

Did you try flashing a recovery through hboot?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Okay, problem totally resolved. basically what happened was that there was an incomplete unrevoked process for whatever reason or another. I repaired by downloading the RUU off the HTC website and flashing back to stock. That generated an error of "your firmware is too new" which is available elsewhere in XDA, basically solved by going into hboot and factory resetting.
Once I had the factory reset completed, I used a 32 bit system to unrevoke the phone (after setting debugging to on in applications > developer settings >debugging on) then I was able to properly boot into recovery. I recommend Clockworkmod update to 3.0.0.8 in Rom manager, but I used 2.5 and didn't have much of an issue. I backed up and the wiped the memory and cache and installed 7r2 without an issue.
The phone is WAY more stable now (thanks to all the hard work at Cyanogen! Thank you also to everyone who posted here!) Pandora doesn't randomly cut songs in half and battery life seems to have improved. Whether that was verizon's crap or I went market-crazy and had waaaay too many apps syncing... I can't say.
Thank you everyone again!

Can't get into recovery.

I installed the Virtuous Unity V1.31 rom and I didn't like the way the "Email" app worked to I installed "tools_gapps-gb-20110307-signed". I still didn't like the way this rom was working so I tried to go back into recovery and I get get on the HTC boot logo. I have to pull out the battery to make restart. The phone works fine, but I can't get into Clockwork to restore my backup. Does anyone know how I can get back into recovery? The weird thing is i can backup this rom from Rom manager perfectly, but can't restore (gets stuck on the boot screen).
Did you recenlty update cwm? I know a few people were having problems after upgrading. Take the battery out, put it back in and hold volume down+power to enter the bootloader and see if you are able to get to recovery that way.

/!\ and reinstalling Clockwork [CDMA]

Hey all,
I'm having a slight issue with Clockwork Recovery as in it won't boot unless I just reflashed it.
I rooted and started flashing ROMs on day 1, but a friend of mine noticed on his phone that he cannot get into Clockwork Recovery unless he opens ROM Manager, flashes CWR, shut down manually, and reboots into Recovery manually. Any other time he is greeted with Andy on his back with the Orange /!\ on his chest. So I checked it on my phone, and sure enough, same thing.
Is this a consistent problem for everyone and if not, is there a fix?
Thanks in advance!
CWM hasn't been permanently flashed, hence the stock recovery going back unless you go through (the crap) ROM Manager. Manually flash it using fastboot and you're sorted
It automatically restores the stock recovery on boot. Look at one of the rooting guides in the dev section for info on which file you need to rename to stop this behavior.

Boot into hboot with volume down + power. Scroll down to recovery and push power to enter it. All going well you should go into your recovery. If you get a red triangle with an ! Then you still have the stock recovery.
OK now scroll down and make a back UP!!! After that factory reset the device, wipe cache, dalvik cache. Data. Everything aside from your sdcard. Then reboot the device. This should get your device operational again. Reboot should take no longer than 15 minutes.
After that choose a custom rom to flash, or just go about setting up the phone as you want.
When you go to flash a new rom make sure you back up first, then wipe everything bar SD card. Then install the rom and reboot.
Good luck pal

Thank you you for replying but I did some experimenting around and I found out that the clockwork mod was a marvel recovery
I have a marvelc wildfire so I went to rezo609 folder and found the recovery img and replaced it with a clockwork marvelc img.
Then I opened the prompt selected install clockwork mod, it installed
Then I went to recovery, worked and installed the cm9 rom (marvelc) and gapps and It successfully worked
You were probably right its beta so it has some bugs
But thank you all who tried to help me I really appreciate it
Sorry I just started so I deleted the URL
no problem buddy always happy to help.
