Hey all, I'm having a big issue with my Droid incredible. I've been trying to root it, ended up SERIOUSLY messing everything up [had problems rooting with unrevoked at first, CID error] then i temp rooted it and tried to install clockwork, which is where i think i usb bricked it. Which none of that matters, because this is my current problem.
If the phone is charging, it boots up and runs fine. It cant see any SD card or internal memory however. The second you unplug it, it reboots and gets stuck in a boot loop, never going past the HTC bootscreen.
Im aware that i should try and reflash the misc.img file? According to some of the desire forums. However when you plug it into the PC, it shows that usb device has malfunctioned, and adb cant see my DI. So i cant do much there. My phone's NOT rooted either.
Any help with this guys? I'd much appreciate it.
Richard
What does the output from this say?
Code:
"cat /dev/mtd/mtd0"
You try wiping it?
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
Chevelle, I don't know how you want me to do that. I'm not rooted, so I dont have terminal emulator, and the USB doesnt work so I cant use ADB....
And yes, I've wiped it at least 10 times now, I've used a RUU to go back down to 2.1 [which corrupted my screen drivers, smh], then ruu back up to 2.2, with no change whatsoever. Im pretty sure that the misc partition does not reinstall with ruu's, if I've read correctly. So I don't have USB connection, I dont have root, and so my options are limited it seems. In my mind I'd have to flash something from hboot, considering thats the only thing that runs correctly anymore, that would reinstall misc. And also when hboot is up, my computer sees android bootloader. So its not hardware, I guarantee that much.
Okay guys, so its safe to say that im going to HAVE to somehow flash a mtd0.img file onto my incredible to get it back working, correct? Now I just need help with this, how to go about it without root and without adb, through hboot. Any suggestions? My CID is VZW__001 if that makes a difference.
Update: Found out how to use flashboot, i did fastboot oem enableqxdm 0 , and my SD card AND internal storage is working again!! =D
USB connectivity is still a No-go. Is there a way to flash an image to a particular partition through fastboot? If ya'll could give any help, it would be MUCH appreciated. Thank you.
You sound like all the people who have had the 5/3 vibrate black screen. USB stops working, adb driver wont show up, phone boots fine with USB connected. Somehow you got the phone somewhat working again which would confirm that its an issue with root/recovery. Except for your USB not working. This I thought was a hardware issue which caused the rest of the issues but I have no clue. I wonder if the root has anything to do with the USB chip on the phone.

Can i downgrade rom 2.3.4 to 2.2 Using the RUU.exe, when in fastboot?
No, it tells me "problem with the bootloader", and if i unplug the phone
it remains on the hboot saying "MAIN VERSION IS OLDER"
so i was wondering if i could rewrite the androi-info.txt from the PB31IMG.zip
in the Sdcard it could help me flashing again 2.2 (Froyo), but no it says abut the signature, and what if we copy the signature of the "PB31IMG.zip" and apply it to another file it could flash back to 2.2?

inc wont recognize usb connections at the computer
well i think it can help you, but I'm not really sure about what's going on with your Inc, but if you flash the “mtd0.Img" it will restore your USB connection

if you do, just flash mtd0.img

i just flashed the PB31img.zip by my self
and as you know it just took me to stock 2.3 all over again
i fixed my problem by
1- unlocking the bootloader at htcdev
2- then flashing a custom recovery (clockworkmod recovery)
3- flashed “su.zip" (Super User)
my phone got super user access back again, yeah!!!
4- after that i installed terminal emulator from Google play
5- i flashed mtd.img from my SDcard
i don't exactly remember the lines i typed to flashed right now but if you wanna know how, send me an email [email protected]

Let me just start off by saying poop.
I've been reading up on these forums quite a lot, equipping myself with enough knowledge to get going on using this phone to its potential.
After the anticipation of getting my DHD, I went about rooting it. I used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076.
Everything went fine without much trouble. I completed all the steps in rooting it and gaing SU access. Also installed the Clockwork Recovery mod without a hiccup. I went on to install the Android Revolution ROM and going through the guide I used a tool called: 'Easy Wipe Upgrade.'
After installing this zip, the phone reboot and it just refuses to budge. Stuck on the HTC splash screen.
I've held down the bottom volume button with power and it gets me into HBOOT. I've tried a variety of option such as factory resets and nothing seems to be working.
My luck and phones. Just have a very expensive brick now sitting on my desk. Ah
I'd appreciate any help I can get please. Thanks.
I managed to resolve it!
Just FYI. Mounted the USB (Which was hidden fairly deeply) I guess you don't look when you panic? I then dropped on the ROM and installed it and boot up took a while but voila, it worked!
Well done, I would go mental if I bricked my phone. That's why I am still just reading up rather than trying things.

in the exact same situation as you where Could you go into abit more detail how you resolved this? currently have no phone cheers
whats wrong with your phone mate
Just so you know, as long as you have access to the bootloader (can be stock bootloader with S-ON, doesn't matter), 99% of the time you can 'unbrick' your phone by installing a stock RUU (PD98IMG.zip method) which returns your phone to complete stock.
If you install the wrong RUU while ENG HBOOT S-OFF then you can potentially fudge up your phone for good (unless you have Radio S-OFF, then you are fine - just install the correct RUU).
So don't worry, because there is nearly always a way to go back to how your phone was before you started hacking it.

You are not supposed to rename the RUU file, rather you run the RUU file and then afterwards locate the ROM.zip file located in your temp folder. This ROM.zip file is meant to be renamed PD98IMG.zip, NOT the RUU file.
ok that was stupid of me.. ok will try to give it a go..
sorry if this sounds stupid to you again.. but, i just wana be sure.. its my first smartphone..
anyway, i run the ruu file on my pc, yeah? so then when i run it, it asks me to connect my dhd using the usb cable.. so i did... but it couldnt detect my phone.. thus, it couldnt continue it's setup.. ;-( thank you for helping out..
Make sure you install HTC Sync, it should also install all the DHD USB drivers needed.
hey, do you have any step by step guide on doing this? im afraid il do something wrong again and just risk messing up the phone even more..
i have htc sync and the htc drivers on my laptop but when i connect the usb plug to my phone and try to run the ruu.. it still gives me the prompt of no connection from the pc and android phone.. :-| what am i doing wrong? sorry...
thanks in advance for the any help!
i managed to get to the update part.. but now it prompts a 131 error message.. :-( help?

Did u have a Look here...this shows the method and its very self explanatory
Here's the problem. I have a hardware problem, so i wanted to unroot the device and send it to the service with warranty. I downgraded to 1.32 WWE RUU. i unrooted the device and also S-ON. then i tried OTA update. it updated and booted normally. then two more updates, last one being 2.50, and it couldn't boot after that. i'm stuck at the white htc bootscreen. no "quietly brilliant", just a white HTC screen.
i tried factory reset, no luck. then i tried to go to recovery mode, and there is a red triangle with an exlamation mark in it. i can't access recovery mode. i can't seem to have usb access to the sd card. i don't have a usb adapter to use. what can i do to get it to boot?
Got the Same Problem, but got there in a different way....
Had to root a friends DHD and got f'ed up... I used the Ace Hack Kit and there was an error during the procedure, someone pulled the USB Connection when i was out of the room cause he needed the USB-Cable -.-
When i Boot the Phone its gets stuck on the white HTC-Bootscreen. If I Hold vol. down and Power before im getting into Bootloader, from there I can get into Android-Recovery (NO, not CWM!!!).
First HBOOT was at 2.50 after (half of the procedure) its on 0.85.
Any chance to get the Phone back to life?
cheers
Guys try the last section in this guide. Just make sure you download your appropriate ruu for your device
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396253
Thx for the Hint, but not working for me......
Tried RUU Vodafone UK 1.32.03 and 1.32.06, and RUU WWE 3.12 but non if it worked. Getting an Error which says, that the Utility wasnt able to complete the operation. (Error 131: User-ID Error)
Strange: RUU says i've got 1.32.06 installed but HBOOT says its 0.85.
Any other possible solution?
AiAS61: you're phone is stock now (but bricked, ok). You have what you wanted.
Bring back to HTC, explain the OTA story and ask them to repare.
z0mg.jer1Cho: sorry, no idea.
nb: in fact I have an idea.
Wait for AiAS61 to give his feedback, if it works (and if your DHD is under warranty) then do the same. It seems that you erased everything, wecan't see now that you had rooted your phone.
Okay, I think I've figured out whats the problem....
I need to get a Goldcard, cause this DHD was branded by Vodafone GER. So I need to make a Goldcard with mmc2, than i can put a PD98IMG.zip on it or RUU flash via Bootloader in Fastbootmode.
Think Error 131: User ID Error refers to the fact, that the RUU has no permisson the write!
I will find some with an DHD and than i will read out the mmc2 Rev CID from my SD-Card with his Phone, make a goldcard and flash stock RUU. Hope this will work

This signature verification had never showed up, so, renaming the file did really something. I'm gonna have a look in the forum about signature verification and then be back here soon to say something new!
First of all, do you have root? I'm assuming so. Your post is sort of unclear. Second, rename the ROM to PD98IMG

Wait. Have you finished rooting?
Background:
I have an Evo 4g of my own that I have rooted / flash custom ROMs all the time, etc. so I am not unfamiliar with the processes BUT:
I was given a stock Evo that supposedly froze on an OTA update and had been stuck in a bootloop ever since. Over the course of several days I have tried various methods to flash new recoveries etc. with very little luck, but I am making progress, I think I am still missing something.
I have read several places that if I can access the bootloader all is not lost, but I am losing hope.

Enable USB Debugging OFF - Nothing I can do about this??
Things I have tried / Results:
Standard Recovery (from boot loader) - Sends device into boot loop.
PC36IMG - I have flashed back to newest stock and it seemed to be successful but no change in behavior... I have since tried to use this method to flash the recovery but it fails every time seemingly no matter what recovery I use.
HTCDev - Successfully unlocked bootloader
Fastboot - Flash recovery (amon ra and clockwork) / FAILED (remote image update error) - I have tried several recovery.img files with same result.
HTC Super Tool: Prep uising ZergRush seemed to be successful, Attempt Perm Root - Hangs forever.
ADB: ADB does not find device.
UnrEVOked3: Does not find device.
H-Boot Drivers successfully installed
HTC Sync is uninstalled, no antivirus or anti-malware on (win7 x64)
RUU - Connection Error 170 every RUU every time.
Thoughts:
I appreciate any help and if I can provide any more information useful let me know. Remember this is stuck in boot loop so as far as I know there is no way for me to turn on USB debugging.
The device connects to my computer successfully in both H-BOOT USB PLUG and FASTBOOT USB. fastboot device command finds device, adb device command does not.
I am not too desperate to get this device working, I will be using it to test ROMs before installing them on my "production" phone, and I am not worried about permanently killing it because it was free and if nothing else I can use it for parts. (TLDR: I am willing to try risky fixes)
sounds like what happened to my old evo to an extent. do you know if that device happened to be running twrp 2.0 recovery before the bootloop? because if so, it is un repairable. twrp on a select bunch of devices messed up the internal nand and messed up the memory blocks to the point of no repair. the closest i came to a fix was through like 7 ruu's. it eventually caught and then booted up but would only stay on for 2min 15seconds on the dot consistently. also when it freaks does it happen to go to a black screen and vibrate 5 times? because that was another thing mine did.
Thanks for the reply, No the phone was completely stock before the OTA failure, the guy I got it from knew nothing about the phone, I just happened to be doing a network install at his house and he saw mine and asked if I wanted it for spare parts. I asked if it was rooted and just shrugged and said it was just like he got it from Sprint.

If this is the truth, the cheapest option is to order a new motherboard from a good source for the EVO. Otherwise, you are stuck with having to dish out $200+ for a new phone.

his suggestion is still valid. if there was an error during an ota then its most likely dead for good. so either get a new board or see if you can get it replaced by sprint.
Ok, Thank you for the advice, I will keep that in mind.
However, now that we have established that it had nothing to do with TWRP, and that I should just give up and replace the hardware, are there any ideas from the development aspect? Remember this phone is just a spare freebie so it is just a pet project and it was never mine so Sprint isn't even remotely an option. I will not put any money into the phone, but I will time. That being said;
Here is some more info from the past couple hours:
I finally got a custom recovery (clockwork) to flash onto the recovery partition via fastboot:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
-OKAY
~Still wouldn't boot into recovery so then
I used:
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
to reboot into clockwork recovery from the image on my PC... after picking up my jaw from the desk in surprise that it worked, I wiped everything, then flashed CM7 Stable ROM and rebooted... (I know the ROM is good because I have the exact file I used running on my phone currently.)
Still no love, back to bootloop.
The fact that I got it to boot into a recovery (sorta) and did a successful flash from zip gives me new hope, it just seems there is something between the bootloader and the system that is borked...
Also, it seems like I should be able to connect with ADB even without USB Debugging on if that is just a setting in the OS and I am doing most of this below OS level? Or does ADB require a functional OS?
Update:
I finally got the phone to boot but as soon as it completely loads the OS it reboots. I am beginning to think it is an actual hardware issue or that part of my file system is corrupt.
Does anyone know of a way to clear and rebuild the file system?

now I want to root it, I tried running the AAHK tool and it flashed busbox and then the radio but after rebooting, it became stuck with the HTC logo (with white background)
I dont even have access to the bootloader, tried removing battery, reinsert, press down and power
still on HTC logo, is there a way to fix this?
I believe the answer is in the guide. If not report back.

I believe you can still run adb from that screen.
You can check with the command:
adb devices
To see if it recognizes it. From there you can do
adb reboot recovery
To see if it works. But you will need to double check the command for the last one. Don't quite remember it. The link I gave you should have it somewhere there or just google the command.

wow attn1 and his colleagues are arrogant as effs, anyway.
Teichopsia thank you I tried "adb reboot recovery" and it brought up the "phone with triangle exclamation mark" logo
i now have the options
reboot system now
apply sdcard :update.zip
wipe data factory reset
wipe cache partition
what should I do next?
edit:
tried the two wipe options hoping it would restore the phone, still hamgs on the HTC logo, what the update.zip supposed to be? a rom? or the PD98IMG.zip?

If you are s-off then you don't need to run the aahk. Just flash a recovery (in your case, check if it's there).

oops sorry about my typo, it's S-On
I'm afraid to try AAHK now because it caused my phone to softbrick twice. And now I don't have attn1's help to recover it again since he banned me from the IRC.
Don't worry we help you.
1:Make sure you disable any antivirus before downloading AAHK.
2: disable and uninstall any unnecessary services. (Covered in the effen manual)
3: uninstall HTC sync and install the one in the hack kit map.
4: connect your phone to your computer in charge mode only with USB debugging on.
5: start the hack kit and do the downgrade.
Everything is in the manual read and understand its highly important.

Do you use a SD card? Sounds like you got a problem with your goldcard not working.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda premium
Yes I have an sd card and I reformatted it before doing the process, could that be the cause? And I don't think I need a Gold card since my phone is not branded

The kit requires a gold card for every device. Reformatting doesn't wipe the goldcard. It sounds like your laptop may be having USB issues. Or you need to use a different sd card. Not all sd cards will play nice with the goldcard hack. I'm just curious why wouldn't you let attn1 connect to your pc? He would have surely got it worked out for you. He makes a tool and offers free support for it on his own time. He was just probably offended that you went to him for help and then won't let him help you. He just uses teamviewer and when done he can't get back in unless you generate a new code for him. He is completely trustworthy. I used to be in the irc chat and the only reason it exists is for support. Sometimes its absolutely necassary for him to remote in and just fix it for you since walking you through is going to take up more of his time and you may not be able to keep up. He knows his stuff.

Hi Gizmoe,
I see, maybe I'll use a different sd card or usb cable next time I try it. Regarding the remote access, maybe I was reluctant to allow an experienced hacker such as attn1 to directly access my laptop, you know just to be safe. Better to be safe than sorry right? I did not intend to offend him whatsoever. And he was grumpy to begin with. And though he answers like that way he did, I still thanked him for helping me fix my device. Maybe he's an old guy.
When you tried rooting yours. did it went smoothly?

hi can you complete this step?
when my htc desire got into soft brick while I was trying to root, attn1 gave me this very same instruction so I got my phone running again on stock
I want to learn this in case my phone got stuck again at the HTC logo (after flashing the radio)
1. go to HBOOT
2. go to fast boot
3. plug device into computer and make sure it read FASTBOOT USB
then he told me something to run cmd prompt as admin and
adb something something, then asked the directory was where I put my PD98IMG (which was on my desktop)
sorry I can no longer remember so I am asking for your help.
can you complete the steps above so I can try rooting again. I know that If I get stuck I can push the stock rom again
I really want to root my device.

When I rooted we still had to hack our own gold card but it went smoothly.
The fastboot USB method will actually work with a stock ruu so there really is no need to do it manually.
If things go wrong do this
1. Download ruu from HTC
2. Download and install HTC sync and make sure its running
3. Put phone into fastboot USB
4. Run ruu from computer and follow prompts til finished
If you run kit after doing above step make sure HTC sync is uninstalled and that the drivers from the aahk are installed.

hi zergrush is still in the hack ki (disabled the AV and firewall, both computers have never installed itunes or HTC sync)
HTC drivers from the hackit were installed
I am using a different usb cable this time (an original USB cable from my blackberry phone) will it matter that much?
getting a little desperate here, i might try an older version of AAHK, looks like old desire users doesnt have that much problem with it
found this http://unlockroot.com/, it says it supports Desire HD, anyone tried this before?

It's been years since I used to root my OG HTC Evo, and I thought I would give it a go with my HTC One M9. I have TWRP flashed and S-On. I was hasty in flashing my SU.zip without a backup now I'm stuck, and I cannot remember what you need to do in this situation.
I can get my phone into download mode and fastboot is seeing the device, but I'm not sure if I need to flash a RUU and start all over or what. Any help would be appreciated.

Details are always appreciated, if you've got them. So for instance:
- what is your current firmware version?
- what version of TWRP are you using?
- what SuperSU version did you attempt to flash?
- which ROM were you using?
- what is your MID?
- what is your CID?
If you can access TWRP, you can almost assuredly bring your phone to a usable state without a RUU. You may end up losing data, but the phone will work. If you can provide some more details (above), we'd be in a better position to offer meaningful advice.
It's been awhile... so I know about half of those things, so here's download mode info

BETA-SuperSU-v2.75
TWRP-3.0.2.0-hima
I was trying to root and flashed the SuperSU and then I got stuck where I'm at now. it over-wrote my rom.
Okay, so you've got the himawhl, which is Sprint, right?
You're running the latest firmware (OS version 3.41.651.4), and you've got the matching TWRP version.
Have you tried flashing the stable version of SuperSU? I wonder if you've simply run afoul of some bug in the beta version.
Yes, I'm on Sprint. The problem with running the non-Beta SuperSU is that my stock rom is gone, thus why I'm stuck in a bootloop.
Okay so I sideloaded Android Revolution 20 through ADB but it never boots up, just sits on a white HTC screen with the security warning in red.
**edit** It finally progressed to the HTC One screen, crossing my fingers that it boots.
**edit 2** Welp, it would never boot to a usable rom, it would hang on a white HTC screen and I could hear notifications go off and I could use the volume controls and the power menu. I'll be wiping the phone again and trying a different ROM.
If I put a RUU file and name it 0PJAIMG.zip and sideload it via adb will it load the stock rom?
I'm not familiar with the SD card method, but you've got the executable RUU available to you (Windows required). That'll completely restore your phone to stock.

I started this whole process yesterday on my work computer (Windows 7) which it was seeing my phone via fastboot and adb but when I tried the RUU.exe at work it kept seeing that my phone was below 30% even though it wasn't.
Now that I'm home and on my computer (Windows 10) I've tried the RUU.exe but it's not seeing my phone. I guess I don't have the right drivers. Under Other devices it's showing as 0PJAIMG, which I think it should be showing as Android device.

A couple of things. I have terrible luck getting Windows to recognise my phone under normal circumstances (ie, Android booted normally). I recommend installing HTC's sync manager, which should cover any driver issues.
When you've done that, run the RUU with you phone in download mode when you connect it. That works for me every time.

That HTC Sync Manager was exactly what I needed to get my phone recognized by my computer. Unfortunately the RUU.exe is for some reason seeing my phone below 30% even though it's been charging on AC power for hours......
So I just figured out that the reason the RUU.exe was giving me the issue with the battery percentage was I was trying to run it in bootloader instead of download.
The RUU.exe kept giving me error 155 over and over like my bootloader was not locked, I kept running it over and over and it finally completed. I have a functioning phone. yey!
Woohoo! That's a great feeling - congratulations.
