Ok, I can't figure this out, despite researching across a bunch of threads.
I've been trying to root my fiancee's Evo for almost 2 hours now to no avail.
First I tried the "autoroot" method, but it failed. Then I tried the unrEVOked method, and it kept getting hung up on "installing unrevoked service...".
Somehow, after getting through bootloader, et. al. a few times, I got to the screen with triangles\exclamations in each corner. I got out of that by running an RUU. Well, that apparently wasn't right, because then I could not get any of the Root methods to work.
I downloaded an older version - EvoRoot - and tried it. Seemed to be working....until it went to flash recovery, and now I'm stuck going between the Bootloader screen and the red triangle-exclamation.
I can't, for the life of me, figure out how I can get out of this mess.
The Evo has never been rooted and it's only a few weeks old. It was originally on this:
RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed
And is definitely Android 2.2.
I think I accidentally ran this:
RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.26.651.6_Radio_2.15.00.07.28_NV_1.40_release_140444_signed
to get myself out of the 4 exclamation point screen.
Can anyone help me at all?
Well the red triangle with an exclamation means you are going into recovery. but no recovery is installed. Boot into the rom use/download rom manager, and flash clockworkmod recovery. That should do it.

I can do one of a few things:
V-Up + Power = 4 options. I can't "update.zip" because it says "no such file or directory". Wiping does nothing, just returns me to red ! screen.
Get to Bootloader - nothing I do there does anything but take me to red ! screen.

No, don't boot into the bootloader, just start the phone up normally; or can you not do that?

Rebooting the phone normally just brings me straight to the red ! screen after showing me the htc EVO 4G white intro screen.
I'm attaching amon_ra recovery [I run clockwork, but this works just as well]
Take the battery off, and mount your sd card to your computer via adapter, put that file on the root of the sd card, do not modify or extract it. Once done, start the phone up and boot into the bootloader, it should ask you if you want to update, and say yes.
Ok, downloaded, added to card. Upon booting into bootloaded, it reads the .zip and then just kicks me back to the bootloader. It won't ask if I want to update at all.
Also, I can give some more info on the phone real quick:

Yep, HBoot was installed fine.
Is there some way to factory reset using my SDCard to mount images?

The only real way is to run the RUU.
Try running the 3rd option.
http://www.shipped-roms.com/shipped/Supersonic/ Let me know what happens.
Ok, downloading a stock rom and going to rename it to update.zip. Hopefully I can get that to work through the Android recovery.
I haven't heard that method, but I'll be around so I'll check back in, in a couple.
Ok, the "update.zip" file opens, but then says "Signature Verification Failed".
How do I run the RUU? While the device has the red ! screen?
You need a factory reset PCIMG36.zip of the RUU I believe.

In the recovery, where it says install from zip, scroll down to signature verification, and select it to toggle it off, so it doesn't check and it should run.
Boot into the bootloader, and select fastboot, then run the RUU exe.

Neither of these worked. However, with my screen just at the HTC Evo "white" screen, I was getting the error "Your battery is under 30%" when I ran the RUU*.exe file on my comp. I switched to a different battery (with an unknown charge) and tried, but got the same. Have one of the batteries charging right now, so maybe that will change my luck??
I'm downloading the stock RUU PC36IMG right now (I think), too.
It is a very bad idea to try different root methods one right after another and to randomly flash stuff unless you are purposely trying to brick your phone. The bootloader stopped you from doing just that when it locked you in the black htc screen but if you would have had your nand unlocked you may not have been so lucky.
If you flash the 3.70 RUU so that you have a clean start you should be able to root fine. There's no telling if you will still have 4G or if anything has became permanently corrupted though. Just run it as a normal exe, do not use it as an PC36IMG.
Ok, Holy Mary Mother of Tebow, but I'm finally out of the pseudo-brick state.
Thanks a ton for your help on this. I really, really appreciate it.
I now am setup with the following:
Android 2.2
Baseband 2.15.00.07.28
Kernel 2.6.32.15-g746f4f0 [email protected] #58
Build 3.26.651.6
Can anyone help me successfully root this phone now?

EDIT: Check post 10 for an update on progress after running the stock RUU
Been reading XDA for awhile, first time posting. I'll try to put as much information on here as possible so please excuse the long drawn out post.
Have been running MIUI 11.16 release on Evo 4g until two days ago. My evo began bootlooping in my pocket, which happens sometimes but usually on the splash screen. This is usually fixed by a battery pull and a ROM reflash in Clockwork Recover. However, on this occasion my phone has been bootlooping on the HTC screen. I booted into bootloader and attempted to then boot into recovery but the loop continued.
I have the original PC361.zip still on my SD card so decided to run the update and see if that would reset things. The update was successful and I attempted to boot recovery . The HTC screen flashes and proceeds to a black screen with 5 vibrates and a blinking LED. This now happens every time I turn on the phone with booting into the bootloader.
I attempted (perhaps incorrectly) to flash clockwork recovery through Fastboot USB through my Mac Terminal, but have been unable to do so as it won't allow a remote flash.
./fastboot flash /recovery /Users/****/Desktop/android-sdk-mac_x86/tools/recovery-clockwork-1.8.1.7-supersonic.zip
sending '/recovery' (808 KB)... OKAY
writing '/recovery'... FAILED (remote: not allowed)
So, to recap. Normal boot results in 5 vibrates and a green LED flash that is only reset by a battery pull. Fastboot access is available, but perhaps not usable by remote access. No access to recovery. Cannot mount SD card onto my Mac (not sure if that's a given). Top of bootloader screen says the following:
Supersonic EVT2- 3 ship s-off
HBOOT-0.79.0000
MicroP-041f
Touch Panel-ATMEL224_16ab
Radio-1.39.00.04.26

I've done a lot of forum hopping and reading and it seems like this is the most relevant information for trying to fix this problem. At this point, my only real goal is to make a phone call or two so I'm not worried about keeping my root since that can be fixed later. Any suggestions would be much appreciated and I can furnish any information you might need.
Thanks
Have you tried flashing a stock ROM RUU updater from www.shipped-roms.com?
This may not get you into your rooted state with your custom rom, but should at least get you into a usable state.
You should still be rooted afterwards, but will need to run UNREVOKED FOREVER, to get your clockwork recovery back.
Just downloaded an executable RUU filed from Shipped ROM's. I'll go find a Windows system and give it a shot. I'll update in a bit.
I think the .exe is finding the android device, but doesn't do anything after update is hit. Is there a way to connect my phone to the computer to run this .exe through bootloader?

Just tried with hboot usb plug hooked up and it didn't recognise. I'll try to install HTC Sync and give it another shot. Thank you guys for the help so far.
The RUU successfully installed and booting the phone no longer causes the 5 vibrations and the green LED. The phone is still bootlooping at the HTC screen going to a black screen and then rebooting.
This is the first breakthrough I've made in days. Any ideas on where I should go from here?
I would think maybe flash radio, then they to flash recovery. Maybe wait until someoe else chimes in though

I tried to flash recovery through Fastboot and my Mac terminal, but I'm still being denied remote access.
A quick update on the situation to try to consolidate any progress so far...
I successfully flashed the stock RUU which should have returned everything back to stock. I'm still stuck in a bootloop from the HTC screen to black screen but no longer have the 5 vibrates and the flashing green LED.
My Bootloader heading is as thus...
Supersonic EV2-3 Ship S-off

Booting into recovery from Bootloader still causes the boot cycle meaning that the RUU didn't fix everything. Also, S-OFF still seems to mean that the root appears to be in place (maybe?) so no luck of returning it to sprint. Still cannot remote flash from the command prompt in windows.
I'm not sure what to do next. If I had to wager a guess it would have something to do with the PC36img.zip file, even though I'm not totally sure what this means or which one I should attempt to load. If this is the case, I can go buy an SD card reader today and attempt to load another up if anyone can suggest one.
Again, thanks for all of the help.

did you try to unroot don't know if you used unrevoked but if you did try to flash the s-on tool and then flash the 3.29 ruu that should put you back up to stock and load good but if it doesn't then you may have a corrupted nand. Don't take my word for it cause i know computers more than these phones i know enough to get me by thats about it but if they are anything like computers i would venture that as the problem

Hello,
I got my Evo today and am pretty excited! I want to get this thing rooted and some CM7 nightlies going on I am familiar with android/rooting, adb, fastboot, and all that. What got me is seeing the different stuff for different evo's My Evo is as follows..
Baseband 2.158.00.11.19
Software 3.70.651.1
PRI 1.90_003
HARDWARE 0003
H Boot 2.10.0001
Its the white back...
Anyway I am looking for the correct root method, and would like clockwork recovery, if possible. Once I get that I hope it is a bit easier to find CM7 for it, lol.
Thanks in advance

Fairly quick. Make sure you have the windows drivers installed [if on windows]. Also, install, then uninstall HTC sync. Once the drivers are loaded, on your phone enable usb debugging, connect to pc in CHARGE only, then run unrevoked, and put your phone down. It should reboot 2 times...taking roughly 5-8 minutes, give or take, and you'll be all set. You'll be on clockwork recovery by default, and you can upgrade to the latest recovery using rom manager.
here's a compilation of info for you. I recommend unrevoked btw

This next link (first one) is where you will actually go to free your phone from the man lol. If you are going to use a Windows computer to root, there is an extra step of installing some drivers:

Drivers link and instruction info for windows:

* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXDszE0Ytn8 (How to install HBoot drivers)
Good luck!!

My phone is stuck at the white Evo splash screen. This happenned after I performed the autoroot procedure located at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
I have tried all kinds of ways to bring it back with no success. I downloaded shipped roms 3.30 and 3.70 (3.70) is what my phone originally was. Then I tried downloading the 3.70 rom as a zip file, named it pc36100.zip, put it in the root of my sd card, then I went into recovery mode and I told it to start the update. It looks like it works but I get a message at the end that says "partition update fail!" and then it asks me to reboot and I'm right back at the endless white evo splash screen. I even tried to load several times using the evo-recovery where I was able to pick which image I wanted to phone to update but it fails with a symlink error of some sort.
I'm stuck. Any help would be appreciated here.
Thanks

I would also try running the RUU and PC36IMG a couple more times, maybe download them from a different source. Do you have HTC sync installed on your computer? I believe it's needed to use the RUU. So if you pull your battery out, reinsert it, then plug your Evo into a wall charger, the light goes steady green after a few minutes? Strange, I'd try a different RUU. Did you download from here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060&highlight=hboot-0.97+ruu . I haven't experienced problems like this before (fortunately) but I've also read about people needing to format their SD card before it would work, using the PC36IMG. Not sure why, but possibly something corrupted on the SD card? Did the auto root give you any sort of errors or anything? Or did it just appear to work, and then this happened?
Also, you could try running the RUU from fastboot mode. Boot to the bootloader, select 'fastboot', and then try the RUU
HTC Sync is indeed needed for the RUU in .exe form.
Boot into hboot by holding down the volume down button while turning on your phone. I believe you choose hboot USB and then run the RUU exe.

The fastboot method worked! Awesome. So, in the hboot menu, it says S-OFF, which I assume means it's rooted. If that's the case, then I can push any rom I want on top of it now, correct?

Correct. You can copy any ROM (suggesting nandroid backup first) to SD card and flash it

Sweet, I'm glad it worked for you. So it says you're S off, even after running the RUU? I've never used the Autoroot method, but it must flash unrevoked forever, somewhere in the process. Well, if it says you're S off, I believe the only thing you're missing before you can flash anything is a custom recovery, which you most likely do not have, after running RUU. I believe that since you're s off, you can just flash a custom recovery from the bootloader, and then flash a rom. You could also use ROM manager to flash a recovery, you'd just need to download and install the Super User app, I believe. I think that should work for you? I've never tried to just flash a recovery from a stock ROM, right after an RUU, but if you're s off, i dont see why you can't do that. Download the PC36IMG I attatch here, make sure its named PC36IMG, put it on the main directory of your sd card, boot to the bootloader. Let it scan and ask you to update. Select volume up for yes. After that's done, you should have custom Amon Ra V2.3 recovery. From there, you 'should' be able to flash ROMs. good luck.
Edit: wouldn't let me upload the PC36IMG for some reason. Instead, click this link to download. http://db.tt/7jGH2CA

Uhh no. That PC36IMG.zip is waaay outdated. You know they are all different, right? Just because it's a PC36IMG.zip does NOT mean it's the same file as the next one.
I used that one in two situations...
1. when my friend phone was bricked
2. when did unroot
both times that file worked for me

Hi guys.
My EVO keeps rebooting by it self. I try to get to the recovery section but in boot loader when I chose the recovery, after restarting my phone keep rebooting again!! I don't know what should I do and actually I don't have insurance too.
Search the Evo dev forum for shipped roms and download the 3.70(latest update) rom and put it on the root of your sd card and rename it PC36IMG.zip(make sure it is not PC36IMG.zip.zip which is a common error). Then boot into bootloader and it will scan the sdcard for the PC36IMG and ask if you want to update. Select yes and let it do it's thing. It may reboot during the process and rescan the sdcard and then continue updating. This is normal. Do Not turn your phone off or pull the battery during the update. This will get you back to stock. From there you can reflash your recovery and then restore a nandroid backup, or flash any rom you want. Hope this helps.
Here is a megaupload link to the PC36IMG you need to download and place on the root of your sdcard: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MUSAURP7

Well, "s" is on indicated that the phone is back to stock, which means you have no custom recovery on your phone to boot into.
Does your phone boot normally? If so, try unrooting it again.
but when my phone keep rebooting how could I check usb debugging and install recovery? when I turn on my phone the only thing I see is white screen sads evo 4g and after 2 secounds .. reboot again
I have similar problem like this guy has
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUi3NFXSh78
Have you tried re-running an RUU?
no what dose that means? How could I do that?
Basically unroots your phone back to stock, in this case, the 3.70 update stock.
yes I did but its keep rebooting

If your phone cannot boot normally but can get into the bootloader, you can push a recovery onto the phone with ADB. It's more of an advanced method, but it looks like you may not have a choice. The problem is that you already started running an RUU and you unrooted the phone. If you rooted with unrevoked, then it should say "s" off. The fact that it says "s" on means what unrevoked did is gone or partially gone, at least.
Try running the RUU again like teh roxxorz mentioned.
Last time I was on CM7-GX4 with toastcfh-2.6.34-wimax kernel.
I download a file nameC36IMG_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed and I rename it to PC36IMG and I coppy that to sd card and I installed it tru boot loader. after all these step and reastarting my phone it keep rebooting and rebooting againg. It should have came out as an exe...which you run from the computer...
Boot your phone into fastboot, connect to pc, once is shows up as fasboot usb on the phone, run the RUU exe on the pc...
getting stupid 170 error. I installed htc sync but i don't know why it didn't fix
You also have the HBOOT drivers installed? And you need to uninstall HTC sync, just the program, after installing.
Where in sac are you? I can help you out if you would like.
I've been looking through threads for hours and have tried a lot of what has been suggested. At first it just started randomly bootlooping ( white htc screen, restart). I then tried some guide on a thread that had me ADB then RUU, once that was all done It got to the white htc evo screen, turned black then vibrated 5 times and the green light started to flash. I can't get into the recovery menu, I click it and it just goes straight to white htc screen. I've flashed multiple PC36IMG's with different recoveries, with no luck.

OK......so basically you got no RECOVERY?....so when you boot into the BOOTLOADER to install the PC36IMG....does it recognize the image?.......and does it ask u to install and reboot?......we'll start there
What rom were you running? Some users have had a bootloop of death, no coming out of it, on CM7. I think it has happened on other AOSP roms as well, but you mainly see it on CM7 - probably because of the larger user base.
I have yet to see a solution for it, I think everyone else had to report it lost and pay the $100 deductible through insurance. The only hope is to keep running RUUs and hopefully one will stick.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
Yeah I can see the image and to install and reboot.
And I was running CM7. FFFFFF I don't have insurance... Don't really want to take it to the sprint store with S-off.. So i guess ill keep trying to run RUU's... probably wont work though

If the pc RUU isn't working, trying using the same firmware RUU, but in PC36IMG file, which you flash in the bootloader.
@plainjane : For those that had the issue on CM7 [some users on MIUI], and they we chalked it up to bad nand blocks? But we still have no 'cure' for it.

Exactly! Do not worry about flashing a RUU at this time. Click on amon RA in my signature to download the PC36IMG.zip for amon RA and place it on the root of your SD card. Remove any other file with that name. Boot onto the bootloader (simultaneously press the DOWN volume & power button until your device starts) and then follow the prompts to install. Installation should take no more than 10 seconds. Afterwards, enter your new recovery, connect your device to your computer, select the USB-MS option and then copy the contents of your SD card onto a folder on your computer. After that, select the USB-MS option again to disengage. Now go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING it. When you're done, download a fresh copy of the rom you want to flash and flash it or copy a nandroid backup to your SD card and restore it. Be patient, either way, with the initial bootup.
pecking & swyping from my EVO 4G (XDA Premium)
Alright so I tried everything I could... So I took it into a sprint store. Told the guy this happened when doing the most recent update. Right there he went into the bootloader menu, I thought I was screwed... but he didn't say anything about the S-OFF. Eventually I came back and they ordered me another one.. probably a refurb. He said it was going to be free, and I don't have insurance. Guess I got lucky.
Thanks everyone for the input.
