Okay, so here's my story. I have an HTC Desire. Bought it two days ago.
I've flashed and rooted with unrEVOked 3.32, then installed this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997 (The stock ROM with radio)
It was working wonderfully, then I figured hey, why not install HTC's available update. So I did.
It installed, and now does nothing but reboot. I've tried to re-recover from the (now 3e) menu, but keep getting signature verification failures.
I've tried to create a GoldCard, got a spare 1GB MicroSD card that I'm using, but when trying to use ADB, I get a 'device offline' error, and therefore can't create a GoldCard. I have USB drivers installed from HTC Sync, and they worked fine for the flashing process itself. USB development was enabled the last time my phone booted, but I'm not sure whether that counts when I can't boot it.
I'm busy downloading and am going to reinstall HTC Sync for drivers, but have also tried the drivers included as a package in Android's SDK.
I've tried switching MicroUSB cables (although I only have 2 at the moment - HTC and SonyEricsson) with no luck, after reading stuff about some manufacturers' cables not playing well with ADB. Still get a device offline error.
I've got all I need to make a GoldCard, but ADB just won't work. I've also tried disabling firewalls/antivirus, to no avail.
Help?
Checkout this thread it has some good info

To make gold card use the gold card tool. If you can't find it here on XDA then PM me your email.

When it said that my device was offline, I installed the Hboot drivers from unrEVoked and updated the SDK as well (might of used the SDK drivers instead) and it got sorted out.

Hello everyone
Great forum. Was able to root/nand unlock and flash DC with ease from all of the information here, even with the EVO being my first smartphone. Thank you all.
Now my question is about trying to get the HTC Sync to work with my Windows Vista. I have Home Premium and nothin I have tried is working. The computer sees the HTC and I have tried several drivers, but it will not initialize the driver and HTC Sync won't connect. I can run as a HDD and that works fine, but trying to sync or charge only will not allow me to run CMD tools.
I have the beautiful Scetched Android boot image through using a root file manager, but would like to create a custom splash screen.
And I guess I need to sync to flash.
Any ideas?
Thank you
Criim
Are you running the latest version of the software? Haven't heard any specific issues with Vista 32. Also check that you aren't using any kind of extension cable between your computer and your USB cable. Try another USB port as well.
Here's a link to HTC Sync:
http://www.htc.com/us/support/evo-sprint/downloads/
Edit: Also, just to make sure, you are not using HTC sync to apply a custom boot video right? Cause as far as I know, you don't use it for that. I've never used HTC sync for anything other than the USB drivers for ADB. I thought once you made the video that you applied it via either a ROM image or by uploading it using ADB, HTC SYNC is just a backup/syncing program for the phone.

It is the USB cable that came with the EVO plugged right into the computer and have tried 2 different slots. I am not really trying for the sync. It is just a good indicator for if the driver is working correctly, which it isn't for some reason.
I just wanted it to connect so I can run commands at the CMD prompt.
I already have the boot video and root/nand unlocked through file managers and the term emu. Now I want to flash a new splash screen, but to do that I think I *have* to flash it from the PC. If you know of a way to do it in some other way, I'd love to hear how.
Going to take a nap, but was thinking about trying to uninstall my AntiVirus, just in case one of the services was screwing with the driver. I had it turned off, but it might have had a service that was still there.

Edit:
Well I tried unistalling my AVG, rebooting into safe mode to remove any instances of the HTC driver, and then did a fresh install of the above file. Still shows an error in the device manager with my EVO plugged in.
"Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)"
I even tried to plug it into all 8 of my USB slots just in case.
I'm stumped.

I'm having the same problem. I just rooted my Evo and now I can't connect to HTC Sync at all. Device manager shows "My HTC" installed properly. Evo connects to pc fine but times out when trying to connect to HTC Sync.
I've tried downgrading to HTC Sync 2.0.31. I'm currently trying with 2.0.40 with same results. Nothing.
I am trying to root my DHD following the guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
when i try the commands on the terminal i first get that the server is starting and afterwords the error device not found.
Have been looking around for few days but can not come around this problem, i have DHD with android 2.3.3, i have tried different computers and different guides anyone who can help me root my device or point me to a guide who can solve my problem.
Thanx
Do you need to downgrade?

That doesn't work on Gingerbread, GingerBreak should be used instead.
Have you got HTC Sync installed on your computer?
Yes i have the sync app installed, I have tried different usb ports and different computers, nothing helps.
Thx for taking your time to help
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Does you computer even read the phone?
If so, try to open HTC Sync on the computer (and choose the option on the phone), ... , does HTC Sync recognise your phone? (does HTC Sync open up and connect to your phone?)
If it does, make sure you have 'USB Debugging' and 'Charge Only' when doing the commands in the terminal.
If HTC Sync doesnt recognise your phone, try uninstalling it from your PC and reinstalling it again.
You where right, i had to reinstall HTC Sync and try different usb ports till i got Sync work, afterwords I chose only charge and started my terminal, worked like a charm.
Now i cant install an rom i tryed downloading OTA and from XDA pages, when download OTA it stops before it is finished, when i try installing from SD it reboots and stucks with a red triangle with (!).
Anyone who knows what the problem can be?
Thx to everyone who takes time to help others it is really aprietiated.
If the download doesnt finish properly then dont install it, because it will have corrupted/missing files, which will result in the phone not booting.
If you want some ROMs or RUUs, look at andyharneys signature above.
Try downloading from there and after downloading, checking the md5 of the file (on the website) with the file you download - there are many md5 checker programs out there, google it
Hello hoping someone can help, I'm a noob have not had much success in rooting yet...
Have a wildfire (Australian Telstra 3G)
Trying to downgrade firmware from HBOOT 1.01.0002 to 1.010001 so i can get s-off.
I'm following the instructions posted in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132028
I've downloaded htc drivers (and uninstalled htc sync)as per instructions
Also loaded android drivers via device manager (screen dump attatched)
I can "talk" to my SD card OK with windows explorer but i don't think I am "talking to my phone or card via adb and the command prompt"
Got the full SDK package installed.
All the obvious things.. Andrtoid debugging enabled / Charge only
So When I attempt to run Step 1 bat I get the following error message:adb server is out of date..killing..*daemon server started successfully... error device not found..(screen dump attatched)
also i tried to make a "goldcard" and extract the serial no of the sd card on the phone. . same deal.. as soon as i get into adb ....error. device not found
note i am using windows 7.
my theory is that i'm don't have a propper usb link when i go into the dos cammand prompt/adb but i have loaded the drivers. I think this is happening when i try to root other phones also (eg zte blade)
can anyone help me. be kind to me I'm a noob...I've attatched three relevant screen dumps

Thanks eventcom, but I've followed that link and numrerous others and they all follow the same theme.
here is the problem as I see it...
1/I have installed the android driver when in hboot and it works ok as per attatched image
2/ I have installed htc_sync_setup 3.2.20.exe which is the latest driver availiable from the htc website.I then uninstall HTC sync, which leaves HTC driver installer & HTC BMP USB driver remaining as installed ( as per instructions)
3/ I have uninstalled any other USB programs which might conflict including Itunes and ascociated garbage (no i didn't put it there my kids did!).
USB debugging is turned on & when i plug in USB i go charge only (as per instructions)
Here's a hint...
When I execute an adb commandwithin command prompt eg [adb devices] i get no devices. When I issue a adb copy command I get the result "device not found" I'm know i'm going nowhere on this until I can get device to properly talk via adb and this is the assistance that i am seeking
further info.
I've tried this procedure on another (winxp) machine with same results.
Ive tried this procedure on another wildfire "s" (that is already rooted) same results
I've temporarily disabled the AVG 2012 virus protection & firewall.
As well as being in the directory that the file adb.exe exists I have also installed SDK so adb appears to run in any directory (please explain ?)
If i plug in usb and go "mount sd card" I can access the sd card on the phone viawindows explorer . in my mind this tells me that I have correct usb driver working.
I've tried a different usb cable AND a different phone
before I uninstalled htc sync i tried it out. it doesn't work and the phone won't sync up to this program ( it rarely works this program, tried it on numerous pc with different htc devices and more often than not it doesn't work)
I'm hoping that someone who is experienced in adb can help me get the phone talking with my pc, keeping in mind that I've done almost everything that I can think of to get my phone to "talk: via usb cable and issue commands. If I can't get my phone to communicate via adb then there is no way I can get past step one
please help me

ok so what system are you currently running? (win7,vista,xp ect)
are you using the stock usb cable that came with the phone?
when you connect the device to the pc with usb debugging turned on do you get the usb debugging notification in your status bar on the phone?
when you plug your device into the pc with debugging enabled what does your device manager recognize it as? mine shows up as attached...
did your antivirus flag up when you were installing the skd or downloading the adb.exe?
Success with debranding but problems with Revolutionary recovery
Thank you heavy_metal_man.
I finally solved the USB driver issue. I ended up completely uninstalling HTC driver installer & HTC BMP USB driver. I then installed HTCDriver3.00.007.exe as a stand alone only. Finally I got it to recognise in device manager.
Important lesson learned. Installing the latest HTC driver off the website which is htc_sync_setup_3.2.20 (which installs 3 modules HTC Sync, HTC driver installer & HTC BMP USB driver) then uninstalling HTC sync did not work for me...I now just have HTC driver installer only.
I asked to install clockwork mod during the revolutionary process, but I suspect it didn't work
Anyway I have now succesfully debranded and "sort of" have root. my Hboot screen now looks like this...

Problem is when I go into recovery I get the "revolutionary CWM V4.0.1.4" Menu... So far so good.however When I select any item EG bacup & restore, intead of going to the next level menu it just goes to a revolutionary screen with no menu and just hangs. pressing the power button takes me back a level but the vol+ vol- buttons do nothing as there is no menu to select from.
So i can't flash with this current screen. the only way I can get out of it is to remove the battery as the reboot & power off menu items do not work.
.
I have tried re-running the revolutionary Exe file again. It prompts me if i would liketo install CWM and I say yes . It says it's done and takes me into Fastboot USB where I can reboot. but CWM ( The wierd revolutionary model) DOES not work like the CWM that i am accustomed to...
So i STILL can't flash CM7...but I'm getting closer...

That's ok , power is meant to do that, its the back button you need to use the trackball to select stuff also if I remember correctly that recovery has an issue where it will not charge the phone when it is turned off, so I would update that asap I shall give you a link when I'm out of bed, but for the mean time, backup, wipe everything and install cm7+ gapps
ok here is the most up tp date cwm recovery for the buzz as far as i know. and here is the thread it came from something to note, when you jump up tp gingerbread the type of recovery changes as well, so, the new one will not flash sense roms unless the rom has been designed for the new edify type recovery. not sure how many support this though. also the new recovery will NOT flash radios. it does not play well with others but you can always downgrade your recovery temporarily if you need to, or use the rom manager app (which ic an app interface for the recovery) to flash what you need

Thanks Heavy_metal_man
Success I now have CM 7.2.0- buzz. I also installed google apps ok.
I guess I shouldv'e read the instructions on flashing a bit closer. I've also got a wildfire "s" as well and it uses the power button to enter so I suppose I just assumed...Truth is that I've only just got this phone last week and I didn't even realise that it had a trackball button ...
This is my first ever root/flash that I have done and I have learned alot from the experience. I specifically got this phone ($10 on ebay) so I coul;d learn to do this without the risk of damaging my own phone. This phone had "issues" when I bought it which is why i got it so cheap. now I have upgraded to CM7 it the issues (eg wireless hotspot would not remain on) have gone.
Soon I hope to have the experience and courage to flash my own phone and my kids phones.
Thanks to H_M_M and all of the XDA forum for helping me out.

no problem man glad your all kitted out!
wow that cheap this phone cost me £140 when i bought it!!! ( a few years ago) man i got ripped off.... still glad to hear you got sorted out you should always read everything you can carefully before you go flashing your phones
also, just so you know, this wildfire is code named BUZZ and your wildfire s is code named MARVEL just to avoid confusion of course if you need any help with the marvel just let me know. i imagine you've been over to the marvel forum ect but if you get lost pm me. i have experience with that phone as well aside from the name they are completely different, and the marvel does not have s-off yet :/ not by software anyway so everything is different to do :/ still i am rambling now glad your sorted mate :good:
After I bought a new HTC Desire Z, I am completely unable to connect to computer. By "unable to connect" I mean, that I was unable to connect neither as a storage device nor through HTC Sync.
Just to be sure I tried to connect with another cable (stock one failed, after all) and with both Windows 7 (64-bit) and Debian (Wheezy). Meanwhile I could successfully connect with my Nook Color (and my previous phone, Samsung i551 if that matters).
The phose itself works just fine, it works flawlessly in all respect but connecting to PC. It reads from 32GB MicroSD card without problems - but each time I want to access card, I need to pull it out, and that's kind of bother.
My original goal was to root the phone, and install CWM, and then CM9, but since I am unable to connect, I cannot execute ADB commands...
On Debian I tried to acomplish it by installing ADB, and downloading ALL packages - didn't help much. I've got the newest version of JDK and JVM, so that's not the case. And, as I mentioned before, NC connects just fine so HTC should do it as well.
Then I tried with Win7. Just like on Linux I downloaded all ADB packages. Next, I installed HTC Sync, and then tried to connect - with no effect. Then I removed HTC Sync leaving only drivers (I found somewhere, that I should do it this way). Still no use. Turning off antivirus didn't help either.
Each time I also tried both: with and without "USB Debugging" option, with or without MicroSD card, with or without fastboot*.
Trying out a variety of advices, I found on the internet, I found out that:
1) phone displays information that it is connected to the computer only after I reboot it while leaving cable connected - PC still doesn't notices it though (and neither does ADB),
2) mentioned notification comes only with stock cable - any other will only cause phone to reboot and charge without any notification,
3) while following some "USB Brick" tutorial I learned, that I also cannot go into fastboot mode*, because I doesn't have/have invalid pc10diag.zip file (and some others similarly-named files),
4) my phone is S-Off though,
5) as one would expect Unrevoked couldn't help.
Factory reset didn't change a thing. Sending phone back is also not an option, since I bought it in another country (it was sent to me from Singapore).
The only thing I didn't tried is connecting phone to another PC, but I highly doubt that it will change anything.
I already run out of ideas, and I would be glad if anyone could lead me to some solution. If there some way (root/flash from SD card?), I would be really grateful to know it.
* - When I talk about the first one, I mean that option in Settings>Applications>Fast boot, the other one I mean is option in hboot.
Do you have the sync version from the desire z website? I noticed the version on the desireZ page is not the same as the standard version on the htc website. I did have the same problem. After i changed the sync version I was able to connect in sync. After that I used the tools and turtial.pdf of the strawmetal website

yep, use the drivers in strawetals pdf guide (google search strawmetal pdf g2 root) or cyanogen wiki or xda wiki. you may need to uninstal curent drivers first than manually reinstall them.
the bit about only oem cable works is a bunch of ... but it is true that some ultra cheap pos cables may only work to charge due to poor design, but its very unlikely

I have had standard version. After your suggestion I tried to check the one on Desire Z page (www . htc . com/www/help/htc-desire-z/#download) but it seems, that now its the same version as the one I had before (URL address is exactly the same). I tried then removing drivers completely, tried this one -> www . theandroidsource . com/g2-desire-z-root-rooting-roms-hacks-overclocking-etc/555-latest-htc-g2-desire-z-sync-driver-download.html, and rebooted - no difference, neither sync nor storage mode works.

The site with driver referred by both, strawmetal tutorial and xda wiki, no longer exists and instead redirect to general support page. CyanogenMod Desire Z rooting page currently doesn't have any information about drivers... Could you tell me what version number you have? I would google it, and at least check whether it's driver thing or not.
BTW, are you able to see anything Android/HTC related in Device Manager? Apparently, on Vista there should be something like "Android Device"/"Unrecognized Android Device" (depending on whether or not drivers are present). But I don't see anything in Windows 7, no "installing driver", no new position in Device Manager, when I connect the phone. Also no information about failed driver installation or unrecognized devices. That is why I thought, that maybe I got USB bricked phone :/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728208
this is a thread I made on setting up adb/fastboot for the vision, on about the tird post there is alink to the drivers needed for this, use these.
if you don't getting -new devices found loading drivers- then either you didn't uninstall the old ones properly or there is something wrong with cable, port on phone, or port on computer
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
That driver didn't help. I tried to conect NookColor with stock HTC cable and it connected. I guess it must be something with phone's USB... :/ I'll look into "USB Brick fix" tutorials, maybe they will help.
well if your sure you uninstalled any old drivers than try cleaning the usb port on your phone, maybe compressed air a little electric parts cleaner (battery out) make sure the pins don't looked damaged, etc. also see if any drivers try to pop up and install when plugging in when is in recovery or bootloader

OMG... finally got it working. I installed HTC Sync Manager again and decided to run it and see what happened. While it was scanning for music on my computer windows installed the drivers. More than once it seems.
Now I need to know if I can uninstall Sync Manager but keep the drivers. It keeps opening up and I don't know if it's safe to flash recovery if that's going to happen.
Flashed TWRP successfully and made my back up.
--------------------------
OLD NEWS BELOW:
Here's the deal... I just flashed the 3.x RUU so I'm stock but I'm unlocked and s-off. I'm trying to flash TWRP via fastboot so I can get a custom ROM on here. I turned on USB debugging on the phone.
First of all, that stupid HTC Sync manager keeps trying to install and I don't know how to stop it. Googling has not helped with this.
Second, I can't get the device to be seen in adb, or at least not online. I seem to be going backwards with all the steps I have taken to try to get this to happen.
I'm using dotatt's adb package. When I attach the phone while it is off windows looks for drivers and usually fails. One time it seemed to work and adb saw the device but then when it boots up that Sync Manager wants to install so I decline. Then my phone was seen but listed as offline.
So I tried uninstalling all HTC things on my computer and reattach phone. Didn't help anything. I tried installing the HTC Sync then uninstalling it thinking I would get the drivers, no go.
I grabbed these Universal ADB drivers http://www.koushikdutta.com/post/universal-adb-driver linked to from a twrp page here https://twrp.me/devices/htconem9.html
Nothing lists as a device in ADB at all now.
My windows Device Manager shows "Unkown Device" under "Other Devices" with no driver listed.
Tried this:
[TOOL] [WINDOWS] ADB, Fastboot and Drivers - 15 seconds ADB Installer v1.4.3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
Still not working.
ACK! Can anyone help me out?
Is there still an issue with using usb 3.0 ports? I feel like I heard something about that way back when.
That's pretty much how it's always been. Best way to get the appropriate drivers is to install HTC sync, let it do its thing, reboot the PC, then uninstall HTC sync without removing the drivers. To the best of my knowledge, been that way since at least the days of the Incredible, if not before. At least it's how I've always gotten the drivers to use adb.
Yeah I remember that from the Rezound, which is why I did that, but it seems that the drivers didn't actually get installed this time until I let HTC Sync Manager start running and scanning my computer. That's when I saw the message that it was looking for drivers and twice it told me it installed them.
I would think it would have them installed during the 'actual' installation process. So I guess I just uninstalled prematurely. Seems weird. But it's working now so all good.
