I have been trying to edit an apk file, basically change some pngs. But after iam done I can't install it anymore. Why is that?
I used 7z to open the apk archive and replaced a few pngs. I put the apk on the sdcard, open to install, goes thru installing then fails. Any help would be appreciated.

dont you have to sign it again or something.. did you keep the same file names for the pngs?
I kept the same file names and sizes. Do I need to sign them?

just delete all the stuff in the META-INF folder, make edits, rezip, and resign. easy
What's the easiest way to sign an apk?

You need an apk signing tool. Basically, you put the modified apk, in the signer folder, without the meta-inf folder, and run a quick command, your signed apk is then spit out. I'll attach the one I use when I get back to my laptop.
Hey... I think this thing makes phone calls too!
Here is the APK Signing Tool that I use.
Just unzip it somewhere, put the apk in the auto sign folder, open a command prompt to the folder, and run sign.bat, it should run you through it. There's a read me file in there, read it in case I forgot something.
Also, when editing market apps, they need to be resigned, but if ur editing built in app from the system, they do not. The HTC signature needs to remain intact on those.
Worked perfectly. Thank you.

trying to run android on top of windows mobile 6.1 on a o2 xda stellar. but the instructions on http://www.androidonhtc.com/ says put androidinstall.tar on the memory card, but none of the builds come with androidinstall.tar, they come with androidinstall.tgz
I re-named it but when installing on the phone using haret it says unable to open androidinstal.tar. so then when trying to boot it has no system files as it hasn't installed them. so i get error no:2 when trying to boot.
any help?
try opening the .tgz see if there is an androidinstall.tar inside of it. If not then place it in the install directory instead.

tried it, it still says unreadable file because it makes it into a .tar file with the the .tgz as another file inside
Why not try just not renaming it and keeping the .tgz extension? If all else fails the build i have, my bare bones one inside the rar file sits an androidinstall.tar
i extracted it, and i have re-compressed to .tar, going to try that
failed to extract. can some one give me a printscreen of what is in each folder because im confused now.
I think it would be nice if all the releaser make the same compression for the rom rls, if it would be .tar inside zip or just .tgz
It would make you guys not have to answer this question too many times.
Edit : If you can't extract it, does that mean your file corrupted?

Ok guys,
So after having seen a million and one questions on how to extract RFS files and all the complex answers we keep getting on mounting rfs files in linux and blah blah blah (all a waste of time if all you need is to view/extract files from an RFS file from some firmware)... and now there is no excuse for those few requesting other members to extract stuff for them.. you can do it yourself!
Here is the easy/fast way to do it without having to go through all the trouble
NOTE: This, mind you is mainly for extracting/viewing. Not for editing RFS files.
Go to:
-Download MagicISO (its free trial but that don't matter for viewing/extracting)
-Install
-Open MagicISO
-Hit File->Open
-In the section "Files of type:" - Click the drop down and select "All Files (*.*)"
-Select RFS file of your choosing (For example: factoryfs.rfs where all firmware apps are located)
and..
VIOLA!
Browse/Extract anything you need... No hassles.
To extract you can simply click and drag to another folder/desktop as needed
Cheers!
TY for this guide. Unlike htc hd2 forums I really have hard time getting answers to my questions in tab forums so this kind of guides helps me very much. Again TY.
You sir, are very welcome!
Glad it helped. Thats what we're here for!

MagicISO didn't work for me. I copied the .rfs file to a directory on Linux and mounted as read/write and was able to modify the file system. Then, I unmounted it and flashed the changes to my GT using Heimdall.

This guide is only for browsing and extracting RFS files hence the name. It is not for modification.
I'm aware of what the original post was explaining. I tried that solution and it failed. That's why I suggested another method. MagicISO didn't work for me. If others try it and it doesn't work for them either, at least they have another solution that will always work and the option to modify the file system, if they so choose.

That's the Linux command line, right ?
#mount -o loop factoryfs.rfs /mnt/rfs
Otherwise on Mac OS X, you can use this:
#sudo mkdir /Volumes/RFS
#sudo hdiutil attach -imagekey diskimage-class=CRawDiskImage -nomount ARCHIVE.rfs
#sudo mount_msdos /dev/disk{n} /Volumes/RFS

Didn't work for me either. MagicISO did extract four files only from factoryfs.rfs.
Two were exe files of significant size... Samsun_Mobile_USB_Driver.exe, and ToolLauncher-Bootstrap.exe.
All the files apk files are probably empedded in the first of those, but no further extraction was possible from the .exe file using MagicISO.
I'm trying to find the origianal VZW Vcast apk files that I stupidly deleted instead of just renaming. I need them so the EC02 update script will run. Any ideas, anyone?

you could look up the long way of mounting and extracting RFS.. Its a major pain though, why dont you make a post asking for those missing files in the forum.
Better bet.

Some apps unpack their libs/assets to /data/data/[app-name] during installation or first run so
a) check installed app data which files are used
b) if there are libraries- try moving them to /system/lib and see if app will find it (some use hardcoded paths unfortunately)
c) make a script that during the first boot will copy required files from /system/[custom location] to /data/data/[app name] (better way) or init.d script that will symlink required files from /system/[custom location] to /data/data/[app name]

For some apps this doesn't work
Tapatalked from Xperia Arc S
just extract the zip rom, after that copy into app folder and readd into zip
i installed "4.0.3 Leak On Screen Buttons" which was in zip having two folders
1 - meta- inf [which has a com folder (with files in it update-binary and updater-script) and with three files CERT.RSA, MANIFEST.MF and CERT.SF]
2 - system (in it framework-res.apk)
so i installed this zip via cwm, but i didn't liked the concept as it wasn't looking good, etc
so as i had already backed up my original framework-res.apk , so using root explorer i moved it back in sys/framework folder
restarted my phone and all got fine....
Though my question is as those files : update-binary and updater-script ---- CERT.RSA, MANIFEST.MF and CERT.SF are not searchable and i guess should not be deleted as they were just updated .. so still would they be impacting my phone or its all kool as i havn't been able to search them or delete them ?!
is it important to find and delete them or its no need for that and its ok ?!
Hope someone understands what i am trying to ask and reply appropriately please i would highly appreciate the same!
Think them like busybox (so you can mount delete etc)
And script file, that includes commands to do.
Every cwm zip files includes them. when you install zip file, these commands executed.

Just to clarify,
That folder contains the Zip signatures and file manifests. as well as the CWM controll scripts. ect. these should never be coppied to the phone on a flash. likewise if you edit them the zip will prob not work without resigning the zip.

Awesome thank you! I understood they just help in probably installing that particular app giving its own correct signatures and file manifests w.e so it gets installed via cwm and nothing more . And as i just backed up my original framework-res.apk to framework folder so its ofcourse all back to normal, though my phone is fine always as it was, I just had this doubt in my mind and m glad it got cleared thanks again!!
