XNA is good for MUCH more than "crappy Xbox live demos". XNA is used for lots of games on the XBL Arcade already. What makes you think that Sony is going to be able to do better on Android than Microsoft is on WP7? Xbox has easily the best dev tools around and that is brought over onto WP7. The only chance that Android's game dev capabilities could even come close to WP7 is if Sony creates a set of libraries, standards, and dev tools specifically for games. I highly doubt that will happen. Also, will Google even let them? It's been said that Google will be tightening the specs for Android 3 so it remains to be seen just how much. Every game will work on every WP7 phone. That will be a large base of potential customers. Any PSP-phone game would only work with that single device. Why would developers spend time and money targeting such a limited install base? Sony would be just another OEM for Android whereas Microsoft runs the show with WP7. And finally, there's been no announcements or even real leaks about a PSP phone. Who knows if it will ever happen? Also, this would be a reason to choose a PSP phone over WP7 phone but wouldn't apply to the rest of Android.

Its very sad if you think that will happen, a phone cant handle that most ps3 & 360 games dont even run in 1080p natively & if a phone could the batter would last like 45 min & your phone would be very very hot not to mention the phone would need a super chip to be able to do that & that would raise the cost of the phone up greatly...anyway dont know why you bring up silverlight, all the major 3D & graphically intense games will be written in xna
not sure why i even responded to this, but good luck with your PlayStation phone that you think will have better graphics or games then a psp
Psp is a playstation portable, exactly. There is a playstation emulator for Android already out. So they will have the exact same games.

Emulation is generally more buggy than games coded for that platform.
Sony is going to make the same mistake here that they did on the console market. A big factor of why 360 pulled ahead of PS3 was that it was easier for developers to code for the xbox360 than it was to code for the PS3. Also developers could make a game in XNA and quickly port it to windows.
Making a game for wp7 now allows you to port that to 360 and PC quite easily. What does making a game for Android & iphone get you? It just gets you on one platform really. This is something Sony can't do and why wp7 really is a true gaming platform. While android and the iphone are very capable of running games they just don't have the tools that MS does.
As long as wp7 sells decently, I can't see bigger studios not getting behind wp7 in a big way. They should be able to crank out quality games wayyyy faster than the competition, since there are tons of professional game developers very accustomed to XNA.
First off 360 pulled ahead because of the gaming titles, i.e. Halo and the network xbox live.
Second, who on earth wants to play the same game on three different platforms? There is no market for this. Fun and exciting on a phone won't yield the same results on a PC or gaming system.

Xbox live and Halo 1&2 were both on the regular xbox. However, it didn't really phase ps2 though, not to mention that PS had many exclusive titles as well. So what changed that the ps3, the industry leader, faulted to the upstart? The ease of development was in MS's corner. Cell architecture took a bigger learning curve. XNA was easy, and allowed for quick cross platform implementation.

Plants vs. Zombies (Casual Gaming in General), Adventure games like Monkey Island, Lots of current games on Xbox live arcade would suit touch experiences just fine. RPGs like Harvest, Carmack is porting a touch version of Rage to the iPhone, that's a multiplatform game. I could go on, but I think you get the point.
Live sucked on the first xbox. Games did too. Although Halo did do well. PS2 dominated.
PS3 hurt itself price wise, it was just too expensive, but it stayed sold out. Sony couldn't keep up with the demand.
360 had a better price. Although MS lost money with each system sold.
Wii kicked both of their asses though!
Also I have never heard of any of those games, none.

Because it's a more casual thing than PS3 and XBox. It also is a fine second console. Few people would have both PS3 and XBox (some do), but Wii as a complement to a hardcore console is just fine.
Back to the PSP phone, I am skeptical about its future. It's done by Sony Ericsson who will want to have it as a differentiator against other Android phones just as against other OSes. They want to build it with specific hardware buttons, and the games developed for it will most probably not be as much fun or won't work at all on other phones. Even if they are developed with other phones in mind, it's not at all necessary that other phones will have similar quality hardware/high performance drivers to benefit from these games. And finally, Sony will most probably want to set a high price point for these games as they won't want to cannibalize their own product (even if such a decision would benefit them overall).
I can agree with your whole comment.
Especially the differentiate part.

I think there's a huge misinterpretation when talking about Android and Playstation. Android (for the most part) will not be getting legitimate PlayStation games, it's the other way around. Android is coming to the PSP.

That's what I'm hoping. The idea of an Android handset that runs "PSP" games really doesn't appeal to me. On the other hand, when the PSP Go came out I thought to myself "this would be a great device if it had a touch screen, a decent browser and maybe some apps". If Sony release a new PSP that runs Android with an XMB skin it'd be pretty awesome!

You sir must have been living under a rock in the gaming world right now. At least on the PC side of things.
I do agree with him that their are many games that would be awesome to have multi platform capabilities. Plants Vs Zombies is my current crack and love playing it on my PC and Netbook as well as a 2G iPhone my buddy let me have since he got a 4. (no I do not use the iPhone for anything asside from PvZ actually lol). Monkey Island was a classic adventure game that is actually really good on WM6.5 with Scum emulator, and other Xbox Arcade titles like the little known "Greed Corp" would be epic on the phone since it is 3d, simple, quick (games last 15minutes MAX) and turn based so multiplayer would work.
Just a question that came up in rom threads. To get more insight into things. How many of use really use the xperia play for its gaming ability. Meaning, you REALLY want the gamepad used correctly. Some people use just the touch screen more and dont care about the gamepad as much. So just thought I would make a poll for devs to use later to get insight on how people use their xperia.
The gamepad is the only reason I chose this phone over the other Android phones offered by Verizon. And so far, it hasn't let me down. Of course, I'm a retro gamer, I couldn't really care less about the touchpads.
I use it often. At the mo playing Zelda on the Gameboy Advance emulator and loving it
brought to you by the XDA app on my badass Android toy
I use it for every emulator , every game. The gamepad is the sole purpose of buying this phone.
Yea I am all about the emulators myself. However I think the issue comes up on non stock roms with android based games that "optimize for xperia play" and how some roms may not work right on a gamepad. I just know I love the gamepad. Too bad GTA3 isnt working right.
YES... i had been hunting down this phone since i heard rumors of it, 2 years before its release, so i started to save up cash, i waited a while for it to drop price, when i finally had enough money , i got the white one, because everyone here would have the black one, anyways as soon as i got the phone the works, Boot loader on locking, Rooting, Custom Rom, Emulators/ROMS, im an old school gamer, so all the Pokemons, all the Marios, etc etc.
What i loved about the phone is that my younger brother got a Iphone 3gs and he did not wanted to buy the Xperia Play because " it looks so cheap" and to be honest it does, it took him 30 seconds of playing my Play to Regret getting the Iphone 3gs, as like me he is also a hardcore gamer.
So Gaming pad.. hell Freaking yeah... its the only thing i can bark at work,"hey my phone has this much processor","mine has this much screen", etc then i go "well how many of you have gaming buttons?" and i just laugh.
My last two phones I had purchased the GameGripper for both. Bit when I saw the xplay I jumped for it and haven't looked back. Now version where the hell is the info on the ics update?

The gamepad is great for playing fighting games
The gamepad is one mayor thing that brought me to buy the phone.
As I consider myself a hardcore and casually retro gamer.
Many other reasons:
Decent screen size
Incredibly loud stereo speakers
Supports epileptic led mode (32hz/2000bpm)
Autofocus camera
Awesome processor and GPU (overclockeable to 2GHz!!!1!11one)
512 MBs of RAM
Easy rooting and bootloader unlocking
Comes with the best OS in the world
Built-in integration with Facebook
Some drawbacks:
SEMC skin kinda sucks compared to cooler ones
Comes with lots of bloatware
Brightness is NULL in the outsides of a sunny day
Battery does not last more than three days under default settings
SEMC launcher only has 5 homescreen slots
Built-in theme chooser doesn't do much
Front camera only works in outsides and is a 1.3 MP one
But overall, much better phone than any of those I have found people using on the streets (at least in my country).
I mainly use the phone with Onlive. Ever since it got support I've been wasting my money on games my computer can handle, but it's on my phone <3.
Emulators work rather well, it's just say I'm playing Majora's Mask I have to keep the virtual keys on screen for the c-buttons due to lack of mapping.
I just don't use the touchpads

of course...bought it because of the game pad..i have a lot of time to play games...even at work...
i don't use the touchpad because i haven't game where i need it (only in mupen64 i need them, but i'm not an hardcore player)
Do some of you still use a BT Gamepad on your XP? Was thinking of getting the onlive universal gamepad. Still having a full set of trigger buttons would be nice.
I thougt the game pad was cool but i actully don't use it so much and actully have another android phone.
That's the main reason I got it and it's great for my retro gaming needs. I use emulators mainly and only use the pads when I need to, like with Mupen64.
I can say I'm a little disappointed in the r800x model (stupid Verizon). My parents still pay my phone bill so I can't complain too much.
I'm moving to Canada this summer and I plan on getting one from whatever carrier I end up with (not CDMA though, I'm done with that mess). They are free with most contracts which makes it even tastier.
BTW any recommendations for cell carriers in Canada? PM me
I'm mobile.. and I'm a gamer.. so, I bought Xplay because it's a Gaming Mobile Phone which had "gamepad" on it..
If I don't use the gamepad, I would prefer Arc S or Ray than this..
I haven't gotten any information about the second vision of this incredible phone.. Just like this design.. Maybe the next phone for me is Pureview 808
The answer is a resounding "maybe"
I'd probably lean towards no though. Unfortunately, our phones are too niche, I'd wager.
if they plan to release an xplay 2 they better announce it before they launch the hayabusa.
Yes
but not soon.
Yes, in my opinion, Xperia Play was just an experiment to observe how a mobile gaming phone would react to the smartphone industry. And it did pretty good after a few months full of nice updates and optimizations of games for this phone.
Unfortunately, XPlay is quite underpowered right now compared to the newest phones which have 2x better specifications. But it still rocks knowing the fact that it can run ICS.
I think the next generation of XPlay could have 2 directions:
1. It could be a better, upgraded version of Xperia Play.
2. It could be a real PSP phone, on which you can play PSP games.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I never saw much about the Xperia Play (here in the States, at least) unless I just happened to see it on my carrier's website, or in a store on display, without the gamepad slid out. I think this phone would have really benefited from being pushed as a "gamer's phone," especially with them having announced the PSN store connectivity. Unless their sole target market was Japan, I think the reason this phone was held back was the lack of hype from Sony Ericsson, itself.
If the Xperia Play had really taken off, it wouldn't be hard to imagine Microsoft trying their hand at having an X-Box portable-type phone, with all the X-box Live connectivity they already have with Windows Phone 7. Even Nintendo, the veritable king of handheld gaming, would most likely have tried their hand at doing the phone thing.
If they make it run the vita os and keep it as phone only without the android ecosystem, It would make it rather lame. In fact I would probably look into a highend slider as a replacement, I could bind the xplay buttons to certain buttons on the keyboard and still use them, and have all the other benefits of Android phones as well.
Not saying one using vita os would be terrible if your just after phone basics and good games, i just like what we have going in android and think alot of it wouldnt be available under vita os.

Yep. PSP games aren't even possible hardware wise. About 10x the power of the original system is needed to emulate the games on a computer.

Sony hasn't backed out on any of its promises yet.
1)Sony's still on track for ICS , they said at the end of may/early June.
2)Sony have never promised they would put any psp games on the xperia play although we do have loco roco. They said the playstation suite would come which may have psp games - this will be released in an update - they did not give us a date of when this would happen so they have not broken any promises.
3)There's plenty of Xperia exclusive games, virtua tennis, fifa 12,Lode runner etc etc.
4)Sony has never said they would make an xperia play 2.
5)Please move onto the galaxy s3, you're nothing but a nuisance in this forum, constantly asking for psp games, xperia play 2's etc.
6)Sony does use its "game experience" as the playstation emulator wouldn't be possible without it.
Finally, its your fault for buying a phone without reading up on it, Sony don't owe you anything.
Edit- Urgh thanked him accidentally while clicking quote -_-.
I find it kind of ironic that people play on gaming centric phone and handle it as "playstation phone" while they care and demand high end specs when playstation 3 is pretty low spec'd in todays market
Consoles have never been beasts in graphical category.ö
But I think its pretty obvious, we have the base for Xplay so it doesnt cost so much and isnt "delayed" in terms of specs, we also can speculate that next Xplay will be released when the hardware is mature enough to emulate PSP and PS2 games.
I dont remember that sony ever promised PSP games, you can expect them to release PSP games at same timespan as any orher Top quality AAA PSP games would be released. Portting is essentialy recreating majority of the code for new platform.

ICS is the only promised thing as well as playstation integration both of which are on their way.... If you ask me sony is making the same mistakes sega did they dont offer enough games for their hardware the most successful console ever was probably the ps2 and that was because it offered backwards compatibility so you had the new awesome games and the old ones. Personally I think that before they made the play they should have already ported psp games and ps1 games and a few ps2 games and then also there would have been xperia play optimised games.
As for the xperia play 2 sony has adamently said there are no plans! NONE. But it is likely that they will eventually make a new one.

You are confusing two different compannies: Sony Ericsson (SE) and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE). Son Ericsson is the one that made the Xperia Play while Sony Computer Entertainment just helped on its developing (the gaming controls, apps like Playstation Suite, etc.). This means it is NOT a console, it is a mobile that allows to play mobile games more comfortably with its game controls. The "Playstation Certified" logo is just an accessory that promises that this device will recieve the Playstation Suite and SOME content from the Playstation Store.
I hate like you companies like Gameloft, but think a bit, you seriously think that big gaming companies (Square Enix, Capcom, etc.) will make an super exclusive title like (for example) a Final Fantasy or a Kingdom Hearts for a device that not so much people have (in comparison with a portable console like the N3DS or the PSVita)? Do you know how much money would they lose?
That's why you don't see super-duper exclusive games like in a console, because the money and because its not a damn console!!!
BUT
You are wrong if you think SCE is not helping with its long experience in the gaming industry. If you would had been more informed you would know about the Playstation Suite Software Developer Kit (SDK), wich is already in open beta since a month ago. This SDK will allow companies and users to create exclusive content to all devices that have the Playstation Certified seal (the PSVita, the Xperia Play, and the two Sony tablets, for now). Isn't this helping with game experience???
Link for more info about the PS Suite SDK: http://www.playstation.com/pss/developer/index_e.html

A mobile should have 3 years of use, not less of one. Do you know how much natural resources are needed to make a mobile??? Stop being so materialistic!
Before buying your Xperia Play you should had informed about what hardware it has, now don't cry because it hasn't got dual core, more RAM, etc. Learn to enjoy what you have!
Xperia Play = Nothing special??? A mobile phone with a gamepad for playing games anywhere? What other device has anything similar??? The Xperia Play may not be the perfect mobile device, but please, don't you dare to say it is nothing special, because is one of the most original mobile phone out there...
Think a bit before saying all these things, know what you buy and learn to enjoy it.

I mainly run around collecting **** in the AC games via my phone due to the L3/R3 annoyances, Brotherhood and 2 work fine though.

thank you too
I have always wanted an Android gaming handheld. At first I was looking at the generic chinese handhelds to play on, but I decided against it (too many problems, poor quality). Then I remembered about the Xperia Play.
I want to play N64, GBA, SNES (for sure). And the occasional 3D android game eg. Frisbee Forever, Cut the Rope, Fruit Ninja, GTA III. The device I currently have is the Epic 4G Touch rooted and overclocked. But touchscreen emulators are terrible.
Is going from the Galaxy SII to the Xperia Play terrible? I will just be using the phone for the gaming functions, and as a internet device (wifi only). I am hoping although the Play is single core, it will be as smooth as my Galaxy. Thank you!!
It won't be as smooth as a dual core device, but you can run emulators up to ps1 (almost) flawlessly. For me, GTA III was a tiny bit laggy, but still playable.
As far as the u.i goes, you won't get GalaxySII smoothness or responsiveness, however you wont find a better emulation machine than the xperia play
Especially for very old systems like nes, snes, gameboy colour, sega, neogeo. There is an emulator for everything and they all run flawlessly on the play with the button (ps1 can be a bit flaky).
Thanks for your reply guys. PS1 emulation is something I'm not that interested in so that is not a worry. I have one more question though.
How do the analog sticks feel? I will be going to the store later today or in the week to try them out myself, but I just was wondering how you guys liked them?
If you want to play games, and have a cellphone in the same device, for sure, buy the Xperia Play. I came from a Optimus 2X, that isnt a Galaxy SII at all, but its a powerfull dual core too, and i dont regret. Xperia Play is a single core, but its the most powerfull one that I've have already seen, and runs smoothly the most of HD games. How its already saiyd in a above post, GTA III really get a bit of lag, but not much. Can be sure, the physical gamepad make a big diference. About the analogical touchpad, isnt so good to handle as a true analogical stick, but its better than nothing.
If you get an Xperia Play, I hardly recomend you to root and install DroidSail Super App2SD or a similar, because the 200mb of internal memory are ridiculous for a gaming device, and this app allows you to pass all the apps to sd card.
I wanted to play emulators too and i bought a chinese android console, and then i just read that the xperia play was better in emus and better quality and i sold the chinese console and bought an CDMA Xperia play to use as a console.
Then i loved it so much i sold my blackberry and my CDMA xperia play and bought a GSM xperia play and i now have all i want in my pocket. (phone, camera, divxplayer, console, mp3 player, tablet).
i think you wont regret it, if you only want it as a portable device, without cell phone recomend a r800a since its cheaper than the r800i
i use firmware 2.3.4 58, great batery life, last all day even if i msg a lot and play like 2 hours in the day. (on 2g, no wifi, no bluetooth or gps)
My answer may be biased since I don't like having to rub touch devices too long, but the analog touchpad is pretty frustrating at times. You basically tilt your thumbs in the direction you want them to go. Maybe you can adapt to it if you're used to using touchscreen analog in Android games, but for me they're frustrating.
No, you should not get the Play. The phone is obsolete already, there are no future updates expected from Sony, some of the best devs are leaving for other phones, official ICS was denied to us and the community is quickly dwindling.
If you want a great gaming device, get a handheld designed for that purpose. If you want an awesome phone, better take a look at what is being released in the near future, and stay away from Sony. By all means, don't waste your money on a phone that is already a year and a half old.

You have a point there, even though Sony promised some more GB updates.
I heard the PSP 3000 has the ability to run emulators too, so you might want to look into that.
Well, I went to the Verizon store. I installed N64oid on the Play. And quite frankly, I hated it. The analogs sticks are just not for me.
I have decided to just buy the Yinlips YDPG18. looks like a PS Vita, but runs Android. Thanks for all your help!
Compared to my old phone, a Motorola Atrix 4G (nvidia tegra dual core), the sony xperia play feels faster, smoother, and higher quality phone. I can't explain it, and the fact that you have a real joystick to play real games is an added icing.
Having said that, you should not pay more than $100 US for a nice used one. I am looking at you Amazon sellers, trying to sell an R 800i for $300, what ripoffs!
