Stupid question (maybe) - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I apologize for this question in advance if it's already been answered. Forum & Google searches haven't really given me a clear-cut answer.
I'm currently running Stock DI18, rooted, with CWM 2.5.1 installed.
As with many, I'm patiently waiting the arrival of the Official 2.2 Froyo Update.
Will I still be able to receive this update OTA, or will I need to flash DI18 in Odin to restore Android Stock Recovery in order for the update to push through?
Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure you have to go back. I have read it before just not sure where!!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

You will need the stock recovery to OTA, but if you have the patience to wait a bit over an hour from the release the OTA will be pre-rooted and packaged into a flashable .zip

Thanks for the quick replies, folks. I may do the flash. However, since I don't really plan on flashing custom ROMs on this device (My TP2 didn't really give me an option not to), I may just flash back to Stock Recovery and re-root using z4Root.
Does z4Root grant SU and keep Stock Recovery?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

z4root gives su (root) and doesn't touch the recovery. I don't know if it installs busybox or not (which may not be important to you)
You can flash back to stock when the update comes or you can wait for the pre-rooted cwm flashable update that will come out within a day of the official release.

Thanks. Just Googled to see what Busybox does, and it doesn't seem like something that's important to me. Only reason I've rooted is to use Wireless Tether.

I'm rooted and they just sent out a maintenance release. Can I do it?

I've heard that you can't do an ota firmware update if you're rooted (is this true?) If so, am I still able to do maintenance releases? Sprint just sent out a new one. http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/240535#240535

So the general consensus is not to do a OTA update if rooted because you will lose root.
OK, what if I dont mind losing root.
I am rooted (ive used the unrEVOked 3.21: one-click root for Froyo method).
And I have never installed any custom ROMs.
(i.e. I am running on Stock. Not rooted Stock ROM! Just rooted Stock. Im not even sure if there is a difference but just wanted to say it so its clear.)
Wouldnt it be possible to be rooted , perform on OTA update (which will make me lose root), then root again (or wait however long until a new root method is discovered for the current software version)?
Please advise.

That is based on the assumption that there will be a guaranteed method to regain root user access on the device. It could take hours, days, weeks, months, or even never.
I would recommend flashing the stock 3.70 update for root users here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874251
Now you still have the update, but you have retained root user access.
Some feedback, in case others find it helpful.
So while rooted, I decided to accept the 3.70 OTA update. The phone downloaded, rebooted, then tried to install it. It failed.
In case others don't know, I believe it failed because a custom recovery was recognized, Clockworkmod. (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Nevertheless, since I wanted the 3.7 OTA update (i.e. actually through update and not flashed) my only option was to set s-on then unroot. The procedures to set s-on and unroot from unrevoked website worked flawlessly.
Afterwards, I tried to apply the OTA, and this time it installed.
So I am now unrooted, and with 3.70 OTA. In a few days I'm going to try the new unrevoked v3.31. Hopefully it will root me.

Sorry novanosis85, i think my last post was a bit unclear.
I wanted to unroot, so I could apply the OTA update.
I guess I was trying to provide some feedback for others who may have similar questions like i did. Namely...
1. can I apply OTA when rooted? what i discovered was, "no" because the update process will discovery a custom recovery.
2. whats is required to be able to apply the OTA? s-on, and unroot procedure, then apply OTA. Update will indeed be applied but you will be unrooted.
Again, I hope this helps others.
dont dooo it! ull lose root
Wheres the guy with the zombie thread pic when you need him? I thought another ota was out

[Q] Will the security fix OTA unroot rooted devices?

With the announcement made today that HTC is pushing the OTA Security update:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...ral-devices-that-fixes-massive-security-flaw/
Will it unroot devices or is there a way to apply this without issues? Or do we wait for it to be included in one of our favorite ROMs by the devs?
If u unrevoked forever like I did then no. But anyway its never a good idea to ota if u like ur rooted device.

Thanks for the quick reply. Thought about as much. However, where do you find the update? The article says HTC is pushing it. However, it's not on their download links page.
It does not turn you to s-off, although you do need to reflash your recovery, ie amon ra or clockwork and you news to reflash superuser.

It's always best to just flash the rooted version - it'll be up in soon after. If you're already on stock, you should be able to just wipe cache and dalvik and flash the odexed version over your current stock setup.
I'd make a nandroid backup of course, just in case.
You should be able to OTA and then flash recovery & Superuser, but you have much more control and much less risk flashing it yourself.

[Q] How long for Rooted CWM Odin EI22 after OTA?

How long does it take the devs to root the OTA and slap it into an odin with CWM injected?
Since the OTA starts tomorrow, are we looking at 1 more day? or a week?

Probably 20 minutes after someone gets the file to a DEV. It doesn't take long to repackage with CWM and root.

That depends on the DEVs free time. Custom ROM's with all enhancements generally won't be see until full source drops with a tar. This has been generally been done the night of the OTA but so far nothing on Samsung's site except the kernel. You will see themed ROMs with kernel enhancements real soon though. Usually before your get the OTA notification if you are in the last 50% in the queue.
I don't see why you wont be able to just odin acs recovery and then flash su.zip

My thoughts exactly.
Afterwards go into your system\app directory (using root explorer) and make some room (delete the Asphalt Demo) and then install BusyBox (busybox installer on the market).
note: my busybox wouldn't go in until after I restarted my phone.
I don't want to fuss with deleting one thing to run another. Seems like the best option is an Odin package but looks like that will be a while. Everyone is focusing on zip packages and multi step processes.

^this. I'm waiting on a one shot package that will wipe my phone and I can start from fresh.
Right now there are a lot of things I want/need so that's why I'm holding off on updating to GB, if I ever do.
I see fixes for some issues:
Logsprovider
Hotspot hack
No CIQ
Root
Busybox
Super user
But nothing really in one odin .tar file yet.
If you choose to do the OTA, you must Odin a custom kernel before Odin of clockwork or else clockwork won't stick and you will be shot back into stock recovery. I used mkasik's EI22 keyfix kernel but nubernal should work as well.
Not really what you are looking for, but if you get tired of waiting and try to go stock OTA or just flash the google download you will run into that issue which stumped me for a bit.
I'm gonna wait... im just surprised that more people aren't asking about this.

New software update, can't update

My SGS2 got a software update from t-mobile, and when i try to install it, it goes to the clock work recovery mod. How do i update my phone? Thanks for the help!
I believe you need stock recovery to do the OTA update. If you're rooted, it's probably just better to grab one of the updated roms from the development forum and flash it. That's what I did instead of going through the hassle of un-rooting and updating.

Judging by the fact that you have CWM, I'm assuming you have a custom rom. If that's the case, you can prevent the update notices by using ANY root file explorer ( I use ES as its free on the market) and backup/delete both /system/app/ wssysync apk's. The nagging update will be gone ;-)

OTA updates with custom recovery?

Can I still receive OTA updates while rooted and custom recovery? I ask because I am not getting the notification people are talking about. I tried unrooting and it still says I'm up to date. I have TWRP recovery. U would like to receive OTAs at least until Jellybean comes out, then I'll go custom. I'm coming from a Samsung Vibrant that I was really used to updating and it seems like some things have changed since then.

Do you have custom rom? On custom roms there is no notification about OTA updates.
I just made a guide that might help you for stock rooted roms.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1842142
It will take you the Kies route to get your update. I also did not receive a notification.
I do not have a custom Rom. I am using the stock, root injected Rom and TWRP. I have the original recovery of I need it and OTA root keeper. I thawed out all of my frozen bloatware apps, so I should be fairly straight, besides root and recovery.
Also curious if I flash Wildchild's deodexed stock OTA update, would I still be able to get notifications or does that classify as "custom"since it's deodexed?

I assume your guide method will trip the flash counter and I use Triangle away to resolve that? I used the no trip method to get root the first time, that's why I ask about Wildchild's deodexed version because I have flashable one downloaded already if all is well with future OTAs.

Yes, on my guide you will trip the flash counter when you install the custom recovery again in ODIN. But like you said, triangle away and your good.
Where are you located? OTAs are generally sent out in waves, by region i think. Just may not be pushed to your area yet.
And if you are rooted, you can download the updated but it will fail at install.

I'm on the west coast of the U.S. I'm sure I'm not in the wave yet, but I'm impatient (as it seems like most of us in these forums are) and I'm going to flash the deodexed version... now. Thanks for your quick replies and I'm keeping cybrnook's guide for later reference just in case.
Okay, so I flash that root injected OTA update and new modem with no flash counter trip, but now my device status is modified. Can I get future OTA notifications?
I am rooted with cwm and wicked rom v2. I got the notification and was able to download it however when it rebooted and went into cwm recovery and it says aborted and failed.
So I think if you have a custom recovery you will not be able to do ota updates but might be possible for Kies update never tried Kies so not sure

As long as you are on a stock based rom and the ota componets are intact, you should get notified if there is an update.
The update will fail though so you have to either get it as a custom rom or update via kies or odin.
Most people say it fails because of root, but I think it can also fail due to either a custom recovery and/or having a deodexed rom. (Not 100% about that last one though)
