Review - Mugen Power 4500mAh Extended Battery (for HTC Thunderbolt)

I was recently given the opportunity to trial the Mugen Power 4500mAh battery. Ironically, the opportunity came up just was I was planning on flying cross country with my family, so I thought it would be an ideal time to test it out.
First things first, yes, it is big. Large. Huge. Yes, it is not “pretty” by any means and it takes away from the sleekness of the Thunderbolt. That is the only negative thing I can say.
The first day I turned it on at 2:00 AM Pacific time and it was NEVER turned off until 7:04 PM Pacific time. When I shut the phone off, it still had 50% of power left. Yes, you read that right, 50%. If you doubt my usage for the day, it was as follows:
I have four email accounts (one corporate account that uses Touchdown and three personal email addresses) that I monitor constantly. I am a heavy Facebook user as well. I also used Google Navigation to get to the airport (over an hour away from my house) and the same program to get to our destination on the east coast (one hour and 45 minutes away from the airport.). While on the plane I had it in airplane mode. It was used heavily by my children and I for games, etc. throughout the 5 hour flight. I was frankly amazed that it had that much power left after that full day. I NEVER plugged it in once during the trip.
I then switched over to the standard battery during our week on the east coast. I went through TWO standard batteries a day (EASILY) while using navigation, etc. I was lucky to make it through the entire day with those two batteries. There was a part of me that was longing for my “monster” to be put back on!
I used the Mugen battery again for the trip home. Reverse all of the previous information (Navigation, Airplane Mode for 5 ½ hours, MORE games and customization while in flight, etc.) and this time you can add in Mobile Hotspot and WiFi use once I was home. From 3:00 AM Pacific to 9 PM Pacific, I had 44% of the battery left. Again, I never plugged it in once.
Look, it is not pretty. It is big. It is beautiful though if you are on the road, on an airplane, on a long trip and/or are a power user and you don’t want to worry about plugging in, changing batteries, etc. This battery is now going to be readily available whenever I need that extra time or push from my Thunderbolt. Why couldn't they just make the case like the 3500 it just looks stupid that way. That's pretty much the only reason I don't wanna buy it and the $100 price tag. They sell two 3500 and to covers along with a wall charger on eBay. For like $35 that sounds like a lot better deal.

That thing's $100? For $80, you can get a 16Ah (16000mAh) external battery on Amazon. It doesn't decrease the sleekness of the phone and will fit in a cargo pocket (and maybe even a fairly large hip pocket). That way, it still works when you switch phones. It has 5 USB ports, so you can charge lots of stuff. (No, not advertising, just demonstrating realistic specs. I know there are comparable models, this one is just the biggest one I found).

i currently have the HTC 2750mAh extended battery and got a silicone case for it.
if i get that 4500mAh battery, will i be able to use the same silicone case or have to wait yet again for new cases to become available?

That thing would definitely give you the juice you need but, dang! That is just about ugly lol. I mean if you need that much battery it would be perfect though. If you don't want that much bulk there are several other options you could go with. I saw on Amazon where you can get 2 1400 mah batteries and a wall charger for the batteries for $20! All the reviews seemed positive too. Just another option I guess.

if you even click on this thread thats a good indication that a high mAh battery is what you want and need.
hell, i have 4 1500mAh & 1 1600mAh battery that didnt cut it for me. before i knew it, a battery was dying and had to go through the bother of powering down, opening up, replacing, powering back up.... and in no time repeat.
im using an extended right now and plan to never use the slims again. hell, i should sell all of mine.

I was the same way bro. I had two a siedo slim battery, standard HTC battery and 3 knock offs but just changing em was a hassle so i stuck with my 2750 extended battery and i couldn't be happier

That's the second thickest and ugliest battery and cover I've ever seen in my whole life. The one that REALLY takes the cake is the hung of crap Sedio sells for the EVO 3D. There has GOT to be a better way!

i doubt there will be a case for this unless Mugen themselves make it. there r cases for the regular extended battery cuz the battery is common n a lot of people have it. i doubt many people would have this huge thing so probably no cases will ever be released unless its by Mugen or a Mugen partner

One thing I always mention when defending my extended battery is the thickness-battery life trade-off and how, at the size of the HTC extended battery, it is worth the bulk for the change in battery life. I don't think i would be able to say the same for this. If I ever had to slap something that big on my Bolt it would have to last a week

Great review, thanks for it. The battery is quite big, but a must-have accessory when it comes to traveling.

Galaxy Nexus Extended Battery

Do we have any word on whether the GNex will have an Extended battery option? I know the battery and door are removable, but that's a necessary thing for if I'm going to be using this phone.
The holy grail, of course, would be pics of the phone with an extended battery, but that may not happen until well after release.

Im only looking for hopefully an extended oem battery. If not ill prolly just pick up one or two regular batteries depending on how good or bad it is.

Does this mean your going naked

Extended batteries are going to be an issue with this phone. An NFC issue that is, since the antenna circuit is embedded on the plastic cover. Either Samsung would have to engineer a thicker replacement, or someone like Mugen that makes their extended battery cover doors as close to the original design as possible. Inexpensive third party makes would probably forego the design and manufacturing costs, to produce a cover only, but that would eliminate one of the great new functionalities in ICS.
I am watching closely the developments in this, but for now I am planning to have my chargers within arms reach (car, work, solar)...

I have to be on the go 20+ hours a day sometimes and I cannot spend all of my time babysitting a phone. As much as I want this thing, without an extended battery and a good case, it just won't fit my needs.

Simple, every night charge the phone and a spare battery in an external charger. At 3 PM when the first battery dies, swap in the other. Unless you don't put the phone down all day, 2 batteries should be enough. If you need a little extra, turn off the lte radio when you can get by on 3g.

way too much work, I usually go with extended batteries so I don't have to worry about it. The added 1/4 or 1/6th of an inch doesn't bother me, but having to replace batteries, waiting for the phone to reboot is just annoying.

Still no word on the extended battery front for the GNex?

Battery and Case Issues
Be very careful if you choose to pre-order a case to have on hand when your Verizon GNex arrives. I've read that the stock back cover of the Verizon phone is slightly different from the GSM phones to accomodate the larger 1850 mAH battery. A few case vendors are noting their cases as not being compatible with the LTE version of the phone, but many are not. Of course, if you're ordering a pouch or other case which doesn't require a precise fit, you're probably fine. But, with any sort of hard case, BUYER BEWARE unless it is specifically noted as being for the Verizon LTE version of the phone.

Samsung made an extended battery + a new cover for the SGSII so they'll probably do the same for the Nexus. I hope they do so because we would have a flat back. I dont like this little bump where the camera or the speaker is.

Hey guys, just a quick heads up. I just got my Galaxy Nexus and it boots up very quickly so having two batteries and swapping them during the day wont be too painful. The back cover is a bit of a fiddle to put back on though, feels like it might break after a while as its very thin. Hope that helps!

Everyone has their needs but for my Nexus one I bought a second battery and hardly ever used it, most phones now a days charge USB, and Micro USB at that, almost everyone I know has a micro USB charger, I have several, including one at home one in the car one at work, friends co-workers have them etc, I have mixed them or used Nokia Blackberry Motorola HTC Samsung home and car changers, Bluetooth headset chargers etc all USB micro they all work on any device for me there is no need for an extended battery and if the original one dies within a year I will either have a new phone of just buy a replacement battery.

The phone should have come with that battery as the default option. With less than 15% more battery capacity I would say it is not really worth buying.

Ankher 1900 Vs Genuine Extended Battery

Is there much difference between the two? Currently have the Ankher, thinking of getting the official extended battery.

Think youll find i have. There are several thread on the Ankher 1900Mah, and several threads on the Genuine extended. Care to have a pop at the thread starters of them topics?.
Ive also searched through each of the threads, and found nothign specific to my query.
I was looking for someone who has used both of these batteries and can tell if there is a significant benfit in jumping to the official 2000mah from the 1900 Ankher.

Yea, moved on since my Symbian days & never been happier. Symbian was great in it's day but was spoiled by slow operating system & crap build quality. First got the Galaxy S & was delighted with it, so now moved up to the S2. Love this phone.

Ankers are not 1900mah but 1600 or 1650 (dont remember for sure but this is what's printed on the cell under the anker wrapping). It's also confrmed by the fact that anker battery lasts same as stock samsung battery. Based on that official 2000mah should last longer but I never had one to confirm from personal experience . Howevet I'm very happy with 2 anker batteries and desktop sharger that I bought for 1/3 of price of official 2000mah battety. 95% of times I swap batteries instead of charging phone. My case is hybrid silicone / hard plastic. I removed stock battery cover plate as case covers the back anyway. When the battery runs down it takes me 10 secs to swap it + with 3 batteries(4800mah) I have 2.5 times more power then extended bat.

Arrived this morning the extended battery. Firt impressions.
I think i prefer the thickness of the phone now. One plus point is that the Camera area now has some protection when itslaid on its back, Isn't being laid straight on the lens.
The heavyness of the phone. Not sure, oesn't seem that heavy to me, but then, i had a Sony Ericsson X10i before this, so its probably on parr with that on weight
Will fully charge it up, and see how i get on.

What about overheating with the samsung new battery? My phone overheats even on running basic HD games on the default battery. Shucks I know. I am thinking of getting hands on 2000 battery but I will not buy it if it has the same overheat problems because I've heard that Anker battery doesn't cause much overheat issues.

1 day 2 hours. 52% battery left. Rom & Kernel setup in my sig!

of course it gets warm you're running something processor/graphics intensive..... And if you think a cheap Anker battery is going to be better than an OEM battery you're a fool.

The anker batteries are high quality...Even when i run games such as 9mm or PES 2012 the phone never over-heats. And the surprising amount of extra battery life whilst keeping the same size is really amazing. So don't go talking about things that you know nothing about. And if your still going to fight me on this then maybe you should check some of the reviews on amazon about it then maybe you could come to your sense and not call it " a cheap Anker battery".
I mean no offence with this but I'm tired of people talking about something whilst not knowing anything about it.

I am using the 1900mAh Anker batteries and based on my experience they do last longer compared to the stock 1650mAh. And yes there is no phone heating issues at all.
but hey this is just me sharing my experience. you can call it cheap, because the price really is, $20 dollars for two of them. Cheap when it comes to price, but quality-wise then its worth every cent i paid for. Again this is just me. Maybe the gadget gurus know better if they have tried them

Galaxy Nexus After Market / Third Party Batteries with NFC

Has anyone found any on Ebay or else where that have maintained true NFC functionality?
I've seen a few on Ebay but the labeling is so "China town," I don't know if I trust them.

If you want extended look for Hyperion brand. Got it on eBay for $20 and the nfc works great. Battery life more than doubled too. Well worth it.

Mugen
Both have 3800 - 4000mAH batteries available with NFC support. Will cost ~$90 though.
Do NOT get the cheap-o batteries selling on ebay.

Seidio or Mugen don't use any better of a battery than most of the cheap ones. You are just paying for a name and false security.

Those battery are also made in China. You just pay more for their brand.
And those two brand don't even have their own factory.
I just got my 4000 mah battery with NFC for 10USD. It also works well.
And of course, they're made in China.

Hyperion review
Just got this that arrived yesterday morning:

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, after reading reviews, because the cover that came with my snapped right on, with no problem whatsoever. I started fitting it at the bottom and worked my way around snapping the clips in and wala - perfect fit.

It's black/honeycombed and fits perfectly over the new back, giving the whole phone a factory made look. The only "negative" to it, is the volume buttons and the on/off buttons are now alot more sensitive - the cover goes over them and it doesn't take much now to depress one of the buttons - I'm actually liking it more, as I get used to it, but I imagine you could carve the rubber off at the buttons with a knife if it bothered anyone.
Anyway, after reading the little card that comes with it and the "charge it for 12 hours, kill it 4 or 5 times cycling" - I plugged it in and after about 2 hrs, it was saying fully charged. I needed to use my phone, so I turned it on - made a couple phone calls with it and decided just to use it. I read cycling doesn't matter with a Li battery anyway, and I was just excited to see if this thing was for real.
It's 10:43 the next morning - my battery has 19% left on it and it has been on the battery for 18hrs, 8mins when I unplugged it yesterday!!! I am a heavy user too - all throughout yesterday, played a few games, many visits to facebook, web surfing texting, 10 or so short phone calls - then again this morning, surfing the web for a good 1.5-2hrs gathering news.
All I can say, is this is unheard of - I've NEVER been able to do this on the stock battery. I'm going to run this all the way down today, so I'll post back when it actually shuts down, but it's for real folks - order it! I'm thinking about ordering another one for backup - I'll only have to charge once a week!

In this case, quality matters. I've already researched the differences. You won't be getting as good battery life as the one's from Seidio or Mugen. Please do the research before saying such things, as you're misleading others.
It's already been confirmed that the cheap Ebay batteries are of low quality.
Just because it's Made in China, doesn't reflect the quality of the build. Seriously? Everything is made in China...
Look through the posts on this forum about the ebay batteries. Almost everyone says they found barely a difference with extended battery.
Please check out this thread: People that bought the cheapo ebay batteries say the quality was terrible.

Your statement doesn't stand. You're insinuating that the cheap-o Ebay batteries are just as good as the Branded Seidio / Mugen batteries, when that is clearly not the case.
Shifting the goal posts aren't ya. Seriously, stop spreading misinformation. I gave you at least 3 sources from various forum members that concurred the battery life discrepancy is vastly different between the generic and branded ones. (Mugen/Seidio)
Did you provide a source showing that the generic ones off of eBay have as good or better quality than the branded ones? Looks like no.
I have sources to back my claim up, you have, well, none.

and FYI, Seidio uses battery cells made from Japan.

I have both the seidio and the hyperion NFC batteries and they both work well for me. Can't complain about either of them. 5 hours plus screen on time usually. Yeah yeah, mod this kernel and underclock/volt that kernal and "I can get that on stock"...well I can't. I like the bigger battery as well.

I'm going to run this all the way down today, so I'll post back when it actually shuts down, but it's for real folks - order it! I'm thinking about ordering another one for backup - I'll only have to charge once a week!

Went 24.5 hrs before it gave up and shut down - recharged to 100% in about 2 hrs and I'm at 14 hrs running with 66% left - I'm loving this! And as mentioned, I'm preferring the bigger battery/weight feel in my hand, then before. Maybe Samsung should make their phones with bigger batteries and heavier!..lol.

Wondering about this as well

So, is there any NFC-battery somewhere around 2-3k mAh? I'd love to get some more hours in between every recharge (i can barely get home from work before the phone wants to die), but the ~3,8k batteries just makes the phone too bulky for my taste..

Mugen has a 2000 mah one.. I've had it for 5 months and it works great. Definitely gives you the extra juice while it still fits with the standard battery door.

Could have been a perfect phone, may return it.

I still have about 10 days to try this phone out. I'm trying to get a phone that will last me a work day and a little beyond so i'm not so worried about my phone dying on me.
I do quite bit of emailing, GPS and Hotspot. And though I'm impressed with the GS3 Verizon (much better than my GNEX), I'm sad to say that this phone could have been better with perhaps 2500 mAh battery. Instead of trying to make the phone as thin as possible, keeping in line with Razr Maxx thickness, it could have done it. a whole day phone.. I'm not a apple fan but it's about damn time Android phone last longer. not really apples to apples but still.
I hope that within the next 10 days someone announces a slightly larger battery that' doesn't change the thickness too much, otherwise.. this phone goes back to verizon minus $35 restocking fee, and i go buy a large bulky, ugly extended battery for my GNEX.

ummm my battery is really good. I have been often getting > 24 hours per a charge.

The phone actually has very decent battery life, especially considering the size of the display. I think you should read into battery management a bit. Mine goes 2 days without charge, but I don't play with it all the time. First few days when it was always in my hands, it would last about 12-14 hours.
Go into the app manager and disable the bloatware that you don't use.

Why dont more people embrace the fact that these phones have removable batteries and are like 10$ with charger on ebay. Seriously its not an iphone you arent helpless. I have three extra batteries for this phone, still think it has amazing battery life compared to my old phone

I agree, this phone gets terrific battery life. I'm getting 5-6 hours of LTE screen on time. Try disabling some of the bloat apps and turn down your screen brightness. If you primarily use apps with white backgrounds, use the inverted colors widget. AMOLED screens consume no energy when displaying black, but consume 3x as much as a LCD when displaying white.

so you buy a $600 phone so you can swap batteries during the day? and carry that battery around? lol...
i'm not trying to be sarcastic here but that's just ridiculous.
again, i'm hoping due to the fact that this phone is release through all carriers, their will be some company out there that will make a perfect size extended battery. sort of like what samsung did with Gnex 1850 to 2100 with cover. about 10-20% increase would make this phone perfect.
if not, then i'l just return it. wait for the unlocked version of this verizon phone, so at least I have Roms/kernel that could improve batt life. just like what happened with GNEX.

might sound ridiculous to you, but i wanted the fastest phone i could get (i do A LOT on my phone) and this is the fastest phone on Verizon (unlimited LTE Data plan). IF the best battery life out of the box was top on my list i could have easily went with the Razr MAXX.
i bought the phone knowing i would be wanting more battery life. but i can upgrade the battery. you cant really upgrade the Razr MAXX CPU/RAM...
i agree with you, and hope for a "medium sized" extended battery comes out. i would think it would be the best of both worlds.

I kind of see what you are saying, but it's definitely not a big deal to carry around another battery. I used to fly a ton and had the HD2 coupled with 3 extra batteries, and it was no big deal. I love this phone, and I get at least a day and a half out of it without issue.
Try some of the battery management techniques mentioned above. Personally I think Sammy did quite a nice job of balancing size, power, and battery life.

Yeah are you seriously making fun of carrying around tiny batteries when you want to buy a $600 dollar phone and put an ugly huge extended battery on it? I had 9 batteries for my mytouch 4g. Never had to charge it. Left.
Batteries in my backpack and car etc.
Seriously take the plunge and give up caring about battery life and charging

Yes. If you want a nearly full featured computer in your pocket with a screen to match, and a blazing fast network, that is the price you pay. It lasts as long as my Droid X, with specs that are tenfold better. I just bought a pair of nfc enabled batteries and a charger for about $20. Not really cumbersome, or difficult to deal with.
I guess I could have gotten some slow, 3g phone for a few dollars less, and had the batteries last two hours longer...

That comment only makes sense if there were plenty of smartphones out there that got more than 24 hours on a charge. Get real, that is not the case. Not trying to be rude, but I just read about a 4500 mAh battery that takes an extended cover an I'm sure there are other options out there that don't require a different cover. Did you search at all?
