I just don't want to make a mistake - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have moved over to ext4 and am on one of viperroms new releases. I want to jump on their new release wen it comes out Monday or so, or even see a few other roms. Is it really as easy as moving the zip to sd and booting into cwm3 and wiping a few things and installing the rom zip? Just swap around any time I want?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Yup. Just backup in cwm before you start wiping...just in case. Plus, once you have the new rom, you do an advanced restore and restore your data.

Some.of.the roms lime bonsai you don't have to wipe data cause it will backup and then wipe and restore all in the same installation process. Its so easy to install.
Sent from my Evo Killer!!!

I'm actually looking at bonsai. Viper is really nice so far. Couple things I'm going to add in, anarchy launcher and the like. Im just baffled some folks can just sit down at home and crank out these roms and sammy just can't seem to keep their software at the same level as their hardware. Thanks devs!

New from OG Epic, advice needed.

Hello,
I dropped and broke my epic today. The sprint dude said I could pay 100 for insurance to replace it, or use my premier early discount $200 since premier ends this month.
Anyway, I ran SRF 1.2 and ACS ICS 5.5.
What do you guys recommend for roms on this phone? I forgot how to attain root and recovery.
Just fyi I will be using the go series (launcher, sms, contacts, dialer).
One last thing, what is the best way to transfer everything to my new phone?

I get it that its q & a but your questions are all in the wiki and to me we all need to do a like better jib of reading up on things which saves on the off the wall threads but OK I will spoon feed ya... try UnNamed its a nice rom and of course Calks is always a great choice. There is a CM rom in development as well. Now if you like odex or barebone roms the forum has a couple with nice ICS themes. Now to root there are a few methods but most say us sfhubs method which is pretty easy.
I hope I helped you although everything I said can be found with a little research... Enjoy and welcome lol

I will be honest. I read the first couple of pages from a bunch of the roms. They all seem to have the same features. It is hard to differentiate just from reading. Hence, I ask for empirical opinions. Thanks for yours.

It may not sound cool but think about it your in a forum where of course everyone is going to have a different opinion. One of the most asked questions is what's the best blah blah blah........ The best for me may not be the best for you... try a rom nandroid TB and move on to the next one.....

I went ahead and rooted using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
I then went about getting Clockwork Mod Recovery by way of Rom Manager. Easiest thing to do. I will be installing Calkulin's rom first.
I'm still tripping about adding all of my data from my first Epic. I don't get it since we are talking about two different SD cards. =/
EDIT:
I had to use this to install clockwork mod instead:

Yes I would advise against ever using rom manager especially for flashing a recovery
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
You wouldn't personally use rom manager for anything? Why is that? What about the other app, "rom tools" or whatever it is called?
Don't restore system data or app data ..... just apps only. Different phone your asking for issues is you restore those.

[Q] Any suggestion on a e4gt rom that DOES NOT require a wipe

i did a search but nothing useful popped up, i saw where the Motorola Photon 4G has a rom called the kitchen sink, that doesnt make you wipe, allowing you to keep all your data but gives you the benefits of a rom. thanks
If your just stock el29 rooted. just flash calks 3.0, im sure blazer would work to.but i did calks. I flashed back to stock a few nights ago and decided to flash calks real quick to real quick.everything is fine here. No data loss or anything. Any rom should work from stock rooted, just its healthy to clear data and what not when going between roms.

Be sure you read everything! Do not be impatient or you WILL brick your phone. Mobile Odin will become your best friend and is well worth a few bucks.
Should you lose your data, you will learn that its really not that bad. After switching to aokp I never restored my apps or data but instead just re-downloaded the apps I wanted. Never felt any regret.

[Q] G/F Friendly Set-up

Hey guys, I got a Nexus a few months ago and passed the Epic to the g/f (which I regret). Anyway, I have AOKP 35.1 on it and she is having issues. Maybe I forgot some Epic flashing routes.
The phone has EI22 baseband and I am looking to find the best g/f friendly rom (one where I can flash for her and have zero problems).
What do you think is the safest set up?
*Its been a while since I flashed on the Epic. I am on EI22 and I see EL30 is the newest build for GB. Do I need to use odin to get that, or can I just flash on top of EI22?
**I see FC09, is that the newest official?
Try cm7 or the peoples rom. The peoples is TW based it really is a matter of taste. I have my wife on CM7 which she loves she hates TW.

She prefers TW, and I was thinking the Peoples Rom. Where i get lost is all of the MTD, BML stuff. I dont remember having all of those options before.
What is the process to go to the Peoples from where I am? AOKP with EI22... I think EXT4 (is there a way to check?)

If you're on aokp you are on mtd... fc09 is the newest ota release... if she likes tw then clean gb el30 (she will be bugged by update message) or the peoples rom 2.2 (fc09) would be the best way to go...
Backup with Titanium Backup, download The People's ROM v2.2 MTD, wipe data, cache and Dalvik. Flash, choose to use or not use the Sprint Connections Optimizer, sign in to her Google account to sync contacts, restore her third party apps and only data she absolutely has to have...like Angry Birds high score or something...lol.

So far all issues were resolved with clean installs, V 6 Supercharger or turning off the Optimizer because of bad 4G due to Sprint. 3000 downloads strong, seems pretty solid to me but I may be biased.

Lol... no offense but if you almost broke up over a rooted phone the relationship musnt have been to great... my wifes phone is rooted and when something messes up she just asks me to fix it... if you don't mind fixing her phone all the time if she messes something up, you should be good to go (depending on if your girl blows things out of proportion or not)... no offense to anybody on any of this... if somebody loves you, they won't bite your head off for something going wrong with a phone!

She just gets nasty over some stupid crap sometimes. Plus, she travels a lot so I don't get much chance to work on the phone. Anyway, that was a year ago.
My lady likes to run whatever I am on. I find this useful for troubleshooting. If I can't recreate an issue on both, it's not a real issue. I made her sit on stock unrooted for a few days last month when she got a replacement phone from dropping it, and she couldn't wait to get back on an ICS rom. She made it through the random reboots on gb leaks, so anything out these days is easy for her to handle. It really depends on the individual. My techy ways have rubbed off on her over the years lol. She is smart enough to use her ipod (i know...) on wifi with a free messaging app to ask for help in the few situations that confuse her. She's a looker, does laundry, is a great mother, works, and cooks extremely well too! Needless to say we are getting married this July. I'm not sure exactly why I waited 14 years to ask her when I say it like that lol.

I cant agree with this strongly enough, though I may not have gone as far as saying no root.
Just remember, ANYTHING that goes wrong will be your fault, even if it has nothing to do with the phone itself (ie: tower down for upgrade, facebook update breaks the app, etc)

This could really save some phones.

Im getting my ET4G on the 14th, So I decide to do some research on it (which is what everyone should do anyways) and I stumble upon the ICS kernel, data wipe hard brick, and I wonder to myself, Why hasn't the option to wipe data been removed from ICS kernels(cwm)? it would save alot of ppl (albeit ppl who don't know how to research first) alot of time and potentially money, hell i mean no one can even wipe in ICS anyways right? so why even allow the option until a workaround is found?
holy monky! so simple, yet brilliant. im sure somebody is gonna come along and say....nevermind..... good call though!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
probably right, but hey, my phones (most likely) not gonna get bricked.
its a sad day when someone destroys a phone they just got, especially doing something simple like wiping the data partition.
maybe even just a warning when you wipe that it could brick your phone on ICS, shouldn't be that hard, its already got a confirmation dialogue

ICS kernel source hasn't been released for the epic touch yet. So there's no way to remove the command that's causing the bricks.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
It's been done already on some kernels and other work arounds have already been found, until source drops.
This thread goes into exceptional detail. The devs and some users have gone to tremendous lengths researching the specific cause. I believe samsung actually threw in a little help as well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644364

May be true but you can work around it. Chris41g and Dees_Troy did so with TWRP recovery by working around the command so it isn't called when you wipe data and by having a safe GB update-binary used when flashing zips. Also isn't sbrissens kernel safe?

This is very true. The suppress_emmc_wipe feature implemented into ext4_utils along side the gb update-binary is a good alternative for now. Also, sbrissens kernel is safe, just not ready for prime time yet

Flash-aholic Withdrawal

Well my fellow flashers, it's been 2 weeks since I picked up this bad boy from Best Buy in Black Friday. I've been holding off rooting and flashing a ROM. Abstinence is not for everyone and it's definitely not for me in this situation. Once you've been to the Dark Side, there's no going back.

Wow and you call your self a flashaholic we have to pull your flashaholic card I also came from a captivate and I had my sgs3 without flashing for maybe ten minutes (the time it took to download stuff included time to find right kernel, etc.)
I didn't even know what the stock Rom looked like I turned in my phone had some juice on the battery and I flashed away
Had to try the new update just to see what it looks like, although I ran frosty for a while but was flashing something everyday even with official I have been flashing stuff just to get my flash on(mostly apps and addons) to get my fix until 4.2 roms start coming out, for now I have also flashed the 4.2 camera back on and little mods here and there mostly cosmetic and audio upgrades but at first sign of 4.2 or some rom that gives me new stuff to pay with I'm flashing official rom away

I was a noob and this very thing happened to me. It scared the hell out of me but thanks to the guides and tools and people here at least have peace of mind that this was the first android phone I flashed roms with, IMEI got wiped after a random reboot playing around with LED settings then.. I was able to restore it myself without having a backup!
