I have just bought a brand new HTC Desire, I have rooted the phone using the tool on unrevoked dot com
I am able to browse internet on the phone okay, but the built in Wifi tethering doesn't seem to work.
Both of my laptop and ipod touch can connect to it, but no data is transferring through.
The built in USB tethering has the same issue as well, I have installed the latest of HTC Sync on both Win7 and XP. But then again no data is transferring to my laptop and desktop.
Does anyone have the same problem?
I have 2 other Android 2.2 phones (non-HTC), and both of the funcitons work okay. So I think there is something wrong on my HTC Desire.
** I don't think the phone is faulty, if I use the "Wireless Tether for Root Users" app, I am able to use my phone as a hotspot okay. ** It it annoying that the built in functions on Andriod 2.2 doesn't work.

Just realised that I dont really need to use the PDAnet application on my Desire or on my pc to tether internet using usb, I'm not sure about other network branded desires but I know that a T-mobile representative posted on the forums that Tethering is allowed on T-mobile as long as you stay within the 3GB fair use policy - Decent =D
All you have to do is select Internet Sharing when you connect your phone up, you'll have to wait a while for the computer to install it as a network adapter. This internet sharing option might not be on other branded phones.

update: its a bit jumpy I think, first time trying it.
Very true, but if you refering to the new 2.2 update allowing it,
the new update will allow for wireless , atm you can only
do it through having the phone connected through cabling.
This is what i think anyway.
Even thought internet sharing is available on most Desires (as it was on the Hero), there is still a use for PDANet.
PDANet allows you to share the internet via a Bluetooth DUN connection.

Dave
PDANet will have to be my choice as I'm running Windows 7 which doesn't play nicely with the standard USB tethering!!
i've been using pdanet as you need htc sync installed, and theres not htc sync for mac :/
First post. So, I have a Evo but I won a iPad (wifi only) online the other day and i'm thinking about keeping it or selling it. I know Sprint has a Hotspot option that you can use on the phone but I don't want to pay $30/month for it which is crazy in my opinion. I downloaded EasyTether off the appstore so I can tether for free which is great on my laptop, but if I keep the iPad and take it around with me i want to be able to get online with it, so it would be great to have the Hotspot functionality on my phone. I know you can activate hotspot functionality by rooting the Evo, but I just updated to 2.2 and as far as I am aware there is no 2.2 root option yet.
So in the meantime I guess I was just wondering if anyone who has a iPad uses the Evo's hotspot functionality. I was also curious in general how it performs over 3G with wifi devices and if there is any option like Easy Tether so you can use hotspot functionality for free until there is a root for 2.2 on Evo?
Thanks for any input/answers and I look forward to contributing to the forums.
If You Root Your Phone You'd Now Be Able To Use Froyo (2.2) With Wireless Tether 2.0.5-pre7 I'm Actually Posting This From My LapTop On Fresh 3.1.0.1 Using The Above Named Wireless Tether.. My Girl's Cousin Has A WiFi Only Ipad And I Was Letting Him Use My Wifi Tether To Connect And It Was Working Flawlessly.. Congrats On Winning The IPad
We took a trip to the mountains a week ago. I used the EVO hotspot utility to connect my laptop and my wife's ipad and my son's ipod touch to the internet all at the same time! Worked like a charm! just remember to change the default setting at set a new SSID and password.
I believe that if you can connect with your laptop you should be able to connect with your iPad. I've always been able to connect with my iPad whether it was adhoc or AP mode.
Well i started paying for the 30 bucks option becuase the free wifi cap my speeds real bad and i was rooted back then but now im stock with rooted icons wierd but dont work but works awsome the hotspot for me i have 3 360 coneected amd 2 ps3 and my msi netbook connected and works bad ass i love it yea some lag but it ok for me

Well, I can connect my Laptop to my Evo via USB using EasyTether Lite so I can get online with my laptop for free but I need free Hotspot functionality so I can use it with my iPad, but idk what I could do since I updated my Evo to 2.2.
I don't know if this will help you but there is a chance you can downgrade your Evo and then root it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
hold your ipad differently, or buy a case.

I find people that type with caps on the first letter of every word to be very annoying. And there's no point.

I know that iPods (3rd gen) aren't able to connect to AP networks, since I've hosted from my laptop before and it couldn't see it.

If you want the iPad, keep it. It sound like the iPad can connect to even AP infrastructure networks. Although I'm pretty sure the Hotspot app, and wireless tether, both aren't AP network (although I don't know what it hosts, that's not my area ).
Basically, Hotspot would work if you felt like $30. Otherwise I'd wait for 2.2 to get rooted.
I honestly don't know what I'm saying anymore cause I'm watching tv and writing this. And there's models...
Oops I wasn't aware that EasyTether was done through USB. In that case, since you don't have root and upgraded to 2.2, you can either set up internet sharing on your laptop and connect using adhoc mode, or pay the $30 for the official tethering.

or you can pay $0 to root your phone, install any 2.2 ROM, and use android wifi tether.
Froyo (Android 2.2) has Wi-fi Hotspot capability: no need to root
Froyo (Android 2.2) has Wi-fi Hotspot capability: no need to root
Either 1: Open up your Apps page and look for the widget "Wi-Fi Hotspot" (on my Desire it is placed just before the YouTube widget"
or 2: open Settings, Wireless & networks and select "Portable Wi-fi Hotspot"
This has allowed me to connect my iPad via my Desire's data connection.
the desire on official froyo unrooted has a hotspot widget preinstalled as mentioned above.
my friends iphone and laptop spotted it fine. so no reason why an ipad wouldnt find it.
i note that evo can connect to many devices as can be seen from other posts here, but the htc desire has a max limit of 2 devices via the wifi hotspot at a time, although i dont know if you could connect more devices by using usb tether and bluetooth tether at the same time too. you dont need apps from anywhere for wifi or usb tether on 2.2 official version. i dont know if 2.2 allows bluetooth tether but if satnav devices can piggy back to net connection on phones i dont see why tethering cant be done but might be slow. there are apps on cnet for wifi and blueetooth tethering (cnet editor reviewed apps).
I believe the Sprint approved version of Froyo has Android WiFi removed and replaced by their own app.
Now that it's possible to root, I installed wireless-tether 2.0.5-pre9.
My iPad connects, but no Internet access!
Ipad works fine
I use the Wireless Tether with my IPAD all the time works great I am using Fresh 3.3.0.1
Hotspot and wireless tether are both AP, zune hd doesn't do adhoc and i was able to connect to my evo with it
Anyone running CM6 RC1 on their G2 having wifi tethering problems?
I tried both the built in hot spot and the googles wireless tethering and my PC cannot connect to either of them.
it worked when I was using the stock rom.
Any feedback/suggestions?
wifi tethering
Wired tethering seems to work after I downloaded HTC sync and it installed the drivers, but now my PC wont recognize my phone as USB storage.
ughh what a mess.
I don't think this helps too much, but wireless tethering is definitely working on my G2 right now!
It's just plain CM 6.1 RC1.
UPDATE: I can tether with the built in Froyo tether function on a macbook pro. Which means the problem is with Windows 7!
EDIT: I realize that my wording may be confusing. well ive tried PDANet and that works, so i can only assume other third party ones will also work.
My problem is that Froyo has this built in, but i cannot get THAT to work.
Ive tried using OpenDesire (many, many different revisions) and Oxygen. Both by AdamG, but i doubt it makes a difference.
I go into the wireless setting and enable USB tehtering. I disconnect my wireless, plug it into my computer, and get no IP so i cannot browse anything.
I go into the wireless setting and enable wireless tehtering. I disconnect my wireless, connect to the newly discovered AP and get no IP so i cannot browse anything.
Am i missing a step
2 different carries too. Ive tried Rogers and ive tried Telus. No change.
When I was using oxygen I just plugged it in, enabled usb tethering and I got connection.
Sent from my HTC Desire
So whta could it be?
hardware problem?
Radio issue?
Am i just doing it wrong?
EDIT: I just plugged it into my desktop, and it didnt work. They're both running windows 7 if it matters..
EDIT2: the programs for tethering in 2.1 and below worked for me when i was on 2.1..
EDIT3: Im posting this while using PDANet...
Alright the problem is with windows 7. My friend used his MBP to tether wirelessly to my phone. No issues
bump
anyone know how to fix it?

Not sure if it helps but have you tried installing HTC Sync? I remember vaguely that it is needed for USB tethering for windows.
So quick set up of my situation
AMOLED DInc
CM7 Protekk build 12
Chad's 3/6/11 Kernel
.7.28 Radio
CWM 3.0.0.8
Windows 7 Professional
So this has been an issue since around official nightly #38
My laptop does not like to consistently hold wifi in certain campus building so I rely on my phone occasionally. However, I also don't always have the best service in these brick buildings. I have tried to use USB tether but to no avail. This is what happens:
Connect USB cable to Dinc
USB storage screen pops up, I tap home to go back to launcherpro
Go to settings
Wireless and Networks->USB and wifi hotspot
Tap to enable USB tethering
It will then flicker the status below the USB tethering option, then uncheck the box and I get the USB mass storage screen again. I used the HTC installer to install the RNDIS drivers.
Can anyone see an issue with my set up? I think Chad left in USB tethering but I could be wrong.
From what ive gathered it just doesnt work for windows 7. Download easy tether and that works fine.
I'm not sure this is related to Windows 7. If it is, correct me, but I don't think so. I've tried both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows 7.
I'm having the same issue. Wifi tether works fine, but I want USB tether so I don't kill my battery all the time. I have the same issues as original poster.
Yep having same problem and i have easy tether but it has a 300ms lag compared to wireless tethering that has 103ms and when i used to do wired tethering when i had xp it would be even better like 89ms and i would share it with my ps3 and it would be pretty good for online since i have sattalite internet here and thats usually 1700ms which is just terrible... yep. i want to get rid of 20ms to get the optimal online experience O.O, ive tried everything active sync(incompatible) htc sync, windows mobile center, none of those gave me the generic rndis driver >.< im about ready to just go get the alpha of Ubuntu and just do it on there.
not the 10.10 Ubuntu cause it doesn't support my graphics card (atleast not an open source version which is all i use.) sorry im off topic...
So any more ideas on how to get the drivers? My friend uses Ubuntu and the native rndis tethering is faster than easy tether when I use his.

man!!! i have the same issue the only usb tethering that actually work for me was the one with htc sence :/
