[Q] Can I root my desire as it is ? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all. Been reading/watching videos but a little confused about some stuff. Goldcard ? Do i need to make one before rooting ? Not sure what it is really ?
I have a desire from vodafone and can't be sure if it's locked/branded or not ? It's on a monthly 24 months contract.
The box the phone came in hasn't got any vodafone logo on it. When i turn the phone on I only get HTC logo, no voda logo. I can only see the word vodafone when I see the unlocking bar and the notification bar.
Software info.
2.2
Baseband version 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernel 2.6.32.15-g2633d94
Build number 2.33.161.2 CL284385 realease-keys
Software number 2.33.161.2
Browser version Webkit 3.1
Can anyone tell if my phone is branded or not and what it means ? Do I need to make a gold card before rooting ? I already found the exact RUU tha matches my phone (one with vodafone in it) in case I need to return to stock before root.
A slight different subject, can I/should I partition my sdcard immediately after rooting ? I'm not sure how to do this, I think using rom manager seems the easy option but I saw a video (how to partition sdcard using rom manager) the guy pressed on partition sd card, then the following options 128 MG - 256 MB - 512 MB AFTER choosing one of these options next screen is SWAP SIZE 0MG - 32MG - 64 MG - 128 MG - 256 MG ( the guy in the video recommends 32MG or 64 MG)
Then he stops as he doesn't want to format his sdcard.
What I'm confused is that in other root guides there's always mention of ext3 - ext 4 (didn't see these option in the video)
For example, instructions from a guide: Go into rom manager, select 512MG for both cache and ext 3 (what ?? didn't see that in the video !) This will format your sdcard...blabla...
So, what's the easiest way to format sdcard. The main reason I want to root is to get more internal memory. I have a sandink (class 2) 16GB card. Also, will partition the sdcard have a risk of killing the sdcard. I didn't do anything to this card, just put in the phone and tranferred old files from old card from computer into new card.
Thanks so much for any advice.

As a rule most vodafone phones come branded, however if its from phones for you or carphone warehouse it is possible its unlocked and unbranded look for apps in the app drawer that mention vodafone, if you find one or two then its branded

Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

That is branded, x.xx.161.x is the code for Vodafone UK
You can still debrand it/root it, just download this and keep it safe for warranty issues should they arise:
http://www.multiupload.com/K0FR1OK301
If you're going to debrand it you'll need a gold card and then use the 2.29.405.5 RUU. If you're going to root it a gold card isn't needed.
As for A2SD+, I have 1.5GB as my EXT3, 0MB as the SWAP and the rest FAT32 (using a 16GB Class 2 SD card)

@ Vengence1990 - I bought the phone from Vodafone store and there are no apps that seem to be from vodafone.
@EddyOs - I don't really mind branded or not but not sure If I need to debrand first in order to be able to use Voda RUU in case I need to return phone to stock condition. If i just root and flash room and stuff and something goes wrong will I be able to just use RUU (click on it) and my phone will be back to stock condition if I don't debrand it.
you said use have 1.5 gb as ext 3 and 0 as swapp and rest fat32
does it mean that the first option rom manager gives you 128mg, 256mg, etc...is in FACT the ext 3 ? Also I've noticed rom manager only gives the option up to 512 mg BUT the guy shows a way to increase this by going to rec.mode and choosing advanced options for partion sdcard.
Thanks guys.

Don't use ROM Manager as it's wank, you should be able to manually partition your SD card using the recovery after rooting but if not you can use GPartEd (Google it)
And yes, the RUU can be used to return your phone to stock if you ever need it. You don't need to debrand to root

HELP ! I just came across a guy asking for advice and he says... using unrevoked doesn't work on my desire because I have the latest official build from froyo...???
Is this true ???? He's on orange. I haven't heard of this, thought unrevoked worked with any desire (it says so on the site) I haven't rooted yet, if this is true (about unrevoked) how can I find out if I have this new build of froyo as I bought my phone last mid december. I'm worried about using unrevoked now. Would somebody clarify this, please, Thanks...
Just found another post and I think I'm on to something (bad news I think) It's about the nadchip pvt4, think if it's 40000 unrevoked won't work, The newer pvt4 chips ship with the later code of 2.29 or voda 2.33 (mine is voda 2.33.161.2 cl284385)
Am i correct in thinking I had a near escape (as been meaning to use unrevoked for the past few day but was a little uncertain )
So, it seems I can't root using unrevoked after all...

@EddieOs - Hi, funnily enough i saw that you were involved in a discussion about this issue in android forum. So guess you'd be able to tell me for sure what's what. Thanks....

unrEVOked works on all Desires, but some people have issues using the latest version. Find the link on androidforums for 3.21 as this should work. I've rooted my phone on the latest WWE build (2.29.405.5) and I had no issues whatsoever

Thanks for reply, when you mention 3.21 you mean the unrevoked version 3.21 right ? but don't i need to find out if my phone is pvt4 20000 or 40000 version ? I checked and my phone shows pvt4 but I can't see if it's 20000 or 40000. There was a guide on how to find out by downloading something but instructions weren't very clear so didn't understand it. Do you have any suggestions how I can find out this for sure before using unrevoked (latest version) or 3.21
also in the guide it says...2) If you forced all apps to SD card, this is impairing the installation of the superuser app. Go back through the guide and substitute "pm setInstallLocation 2" foir "pm setInstallLocation 0" and try it again
I don't understand this, I keep all apps that can be kept in the sdcard kept there.
Go back through the guide (what guide ?) and substitute "pm setinstallLocation 2...blabla
Don't know how to do this...
Thanks for any info

As you're lazy, try this:
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/recovery/3.21/reflash_package.exe

Thanks, I had already downloaded this version of unrevoked to my computer when you posted link. What I need to find out is if my nandchip pvt4 is 20000 or 40000. If it's 20000 it would be ok to unrevoke but I suspect it's 40000
So I will have to learn about amonRa recovey. Don;t quite understand it...
This is getting so frustrating, maybe I'll take phone to a shop and ask for it to be rooted.

Where do you live?
As for AmonRA, download this:
http://files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=amon_ra/RECOVERY/&file=recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0.img
Start unrEVOked and before connecting your phone select File>Custom Recovery and point it to that file above on your PC. Then connect the phone and it will flash AmonRA instead of CWM

Why don't you just try unRevoked, and if it doesn't work, no big issue? Aslong s your not messing around with it, the only time people have had problems is on the re-boot, and thats after the phone has completely booted? As for the PVT thing, I have the 4000 and I haven't had any problems rooting aslong as I was running 2.1 software, so no idea :/ it's all very confusing, but I would go for it

I live in Bournemouth. Will study for a bit more before doing anything...
Yeah... need to find out if my phone has erase size value 20000 or 40000 I know I can do this by using sdk but I find it a little complicated.
I need step by step instructions (any takers ??) or other way or finding out that isn't too difficult.
Thanks for any help...
Well... managed to find out my phone erase size value is 20000 so I should have no problems using unrevoked 3.21
Now, the doubt about goldcard......

[Q] Question : Downgrade Hboot

I got the tutorials to downgrade form hboot .92 to .80.
Using Unbranded Desire and Amoled screen.
All precaution already been taken.
But when i load the .zip file into the SD card, it wont be detected in the Hboot menu.
I wonder if anyone can share their expert opinion lolz~
Thanks anyone that is willing to reply
I used this tutorial when i downgraded, worked without any problems.
(did not use a gold card though, since i had a unbranded phone)
Good Luck
The zip needs to be called PB99IMG.zip (or something like that, refer to the guide) and not PB99IMG.zip.zip - make sure it's named correctly and it's on the root of your SD card and not in a folder

[Q] What the hell has happened?? - SOLVED

ok, phone was on charge, phone rang, went to answer, phone rebooted!. Left it but it stayed on 02 screen??.. Battery out, reboot - same thing!
Tried going into recovery but again it hangs on the o2 boot screen?
What the hell has happened?????
Was running DeFrost 3.6 with no problems!
Someone please tell me my phone is not kaput!!
First of all, pull off your sdcard.
Tried that - removed sdcard - still same.. o2 boot screen...
Can anyone help me please?? I cant even get into recovery to to a nandroid restore.. everything i try the phone just sits there on the o2 screen... is there a way to reflash an original rom incase i have to send it back???
I just dont undestand why answering the phone on charge i have ended up with a f**cked phone???
So i imagine you can see hboot screen.
You may try to flash a new recovery with unrevoked.
Yes i can see the Hboot screens.. i tried the unrevoked methos but it wont go any further than saying: waiting for device enable usb debugging... as the phone wont startup.
Vicious circle eh.. thanks for quick reply though..

What i was going to say .... if you cant get to the hboot screen well then bad times indeed
Extreme solution
If you can get the Hboot screen, as extreme solution, just copy in your SDcard (root directory)the file PB99IMG.zip or similar (I have no brand phone, maybe O2 requires a different file).
Be carefull, because this method will reset completely your phone. You will loose Root, every data, and you'll come back to the original branded phone.
You can search for this file at:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bravo/
Download the zip file corresponding to your version and rename it in PB99IMG.zip
Put this file in the root directory of your sdcard, start the device in Hboot mode and it should start automatically!
I hope this can help you.
If anyone more expert has a better solution, please help him
No i CAN get into hboot screen.. i just have no idea as to what to do now???

Ok, i will lose root but will i be able to use the unrevoked method again??.. or am i completey screwed then as hboot will be too high etc...
I have put my goldcard in.. but just cant do anything
So...the alternative is to have a not working phone. In any case, Unrevoked or not, you should give it a try if you don't have other solutions. But I suggest you to read a lot of threads before you proceed... many similar experiences could help you to understand the procedure.
Yeah agreed.. would rather a working phone.. I have been looking at the bricked threads but they are not so easy to understand.. Appreciate the help though..

Ok, i am completely stuck now.. I think i can repair the phone but i just have no idea how. I have trawled through bricked threads..just cant find a solution.
I think if i could get usb debugging enabled unrevoked might just work.
Using the cmd tool i can use enableqxdm 0 and it says okay - however unrevoked still does not see it as neither does my pc!
I have no idea how to restore my nandroid without getting into recovery???
I am unsure weather to flash the PB99img.zip as i have a branded phone and i am worried i will completely brick it!
Just so so lost....
Heres a tip though - dont answer your phone when its on charge!!!!

Can i use any of the PB99IMG.zips then as it was an o2 branded phone??? Or can i use the update.zip (is this the nandroid backup??) thats already on my sd card - have card reader so can mess about with that no probs..
I have just seen where it checks for the image afetr getting to Hboot so i understand what its looking for now... Question is what image do i use..
Really do appreciate all the help guys
Ok, i tried flashing one of the pb99img and i get a CID error (incorrect). It says this is because goldcard is not present but it is???? Is it because i am using a different standard rom to the one that was on the phone???
I give up for today - i gotta go to work. If i could get USB debugging to work i would probably be ok, but when i do the commands via cmd prompt it says okay but it doesnt seem to do anything!
My goldcard now seems like it doesnt want to be one, thus the cid error..
I am just going round in circles here..
Think i might just throw the damn thing out of a window - Its doing my head in!!!!!
All from answering the poxy phone whilst plugged in!!!!!
wow.. was hoping for a few replies.. guess no one has any ideas.. guess i am buggered then... ok so if i send the phone back to o2 - what is worse case scenario if they do see its flashed??.. will they just charge me for the fix or just not touch it at all??

I would suggest you put your SD card in your computer and verify the content. Or even better, I hope you have a backup of your SD Card after you rooted your phone. I think your partition may have gone, so you can't boot up anymore. Try to format your sd card, partition it with Gpartition or whatever prog you have and copy back the content of your SD Crad back up on your newly formated SD card. It should do the trick. The same happened to me when I changed my 8gb SD Card for a 16gb one.
Good luck and let me know how it works (or not).
forelli, in Darth Sidious mode.
The sd card seems ok in a card reader? I did do a backup a while back but i have a spare sd card so i will try that? Would the sd card problem stop me going into recovery though??? I thought that was phone based and not sd card based??

RUU on a Mac

Ive seen the program OpenRUU but can anyone tell me how to use it?
i want to flash from software 2.09 to 2.10 or above? is this possible? im rooted thru unrevoked but running a stock rom. Other than a gold card do i need anything else to use this program? and even if the ruu fails, it will not damage my phone?
thanks, adbird
EDIT: Actually do i need a gold card, my phone used to be branded under telus, but then i flashed a couple roms and eventually flashed the stock WWE rom, so do i need a gold card?
I have no experience with Mac but if you can't use a RUU, there is the PB99IMG.zip(which you can find using windows when the RUU is extracted) method which functions pretty much the same.
As for the gold card, you do need one, - debranding a branded handset doesn't make it unbranded .
Some people confuse "debranded" and "unbranded".
k thanks i guess i gotta go buy another sd card :/
There is no problem in making your regular card in the device, your goldcard, i.e., you don't need a dedicated microSD for gold card use exclusively .
but isnt clockworkmod kept on the sd? what if you format it
If I understand you correctly, you want to flash "2.10 or above".
Make a your card a goldcard ;
Put the ROM you want to install in the root of the memory card (/sdcard/ - in other words it should not be in any folder);
Make sure that the rom is renamed from something like "PB99IMG_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.2_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed.zip" to "PB99IMG.zip" (zip is the extension, not part of the name);
Turn off the phone;
Turn on the phone while holding volume down, it should be recognized and you'll be asked to apply it.
will that unroot the device?
This might work for you
It helps flashing RUU's
WAIT, BEFORE YOU START, CREATE A GOLDCARD. IT IS VERY NECESSARY. THINGS WILL GO WRONG IF YOU DONT.
EDIT: YOU MUST BE ABLE TO BOOT GO TO THE BOOTLOADER MENU.
Firstly, download this file. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13240777/Desire Downgrade.ZIP
Extract the files.
Transfer the file PB99IMG to the root of your SD card (It is located in the extracted files)
Secondly, disconnect your phone and turn it off.
After that boot up your phone while pressing the volume down button and the power button.
The bootloader should be checking for files after awhile and once it found the file that is supposed to be in the root of your sd card, press the volume up button (NOT EXACTLY SURE, SHOULD BE THE ONE THAT SAYS YES AND CONTINUE)
It should be writing files to your phone. and replaces everything. E.G: HBOOT, RECOVERY,RADIO and such.
It should be writing files successfully and then it would ask you to reboot. Continue with the reboot and you should be having your Desire back to stock. Perfect.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THERE ARE RISKS INVOLVED LIKE FAILURE OF WRITING TO THE HBOOT. PLEASE REMEMBER TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. MAINLY, DO NOT BLAME ME FOR ANYTHING THAT GOES WRONG.
FINALLY, YOU SHOULD BE READING EVERYTHING UP TO HERE AND THAT YOU MUST HAVE A GOLDCARD (A GOLD SD CARD)
Hope this helps you and please ask if you have further questions. PM me if the questions cannot be answered here. Good Luck

Yes, flashing a RUU unroots the phone.
But rooting again is easy.

Cannot view SD EXT

Hi
I have rooted my phone with unrevoked, s-off'ed with alpha rev 1.8, partitioned 1gb of my 4 gb card to ext 3 and installed Gingerbread F1 V3 Ap2SD ENG.
On first load of the rom i can see that my SD card FAT 32 storage has been reduced but the only other memory internal memory which was at 147mb when i first booted the rom.
All apps are installing to the internal memory by default with only the option of moving to the SD FAT 32 partition. and there is no option to move to the sd ext3 part as there is no option - so I have lost 1gb off my sd card.
What have i done wrong?
on a 2nd note i appear to have a call delay when answering the phone my radio version is 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27 - do i need to update this ? will it solve the problem ? my carrier is vodafone UK.
appreciate the help
ararararar... Sorry had to do something.
This has been explained SO many times by me included. The way a2sd works is by symlinking the folder containing the apps(/data/app) to you ext-partition.
You cannot see this partition listed in the system info, as the partition is not supposed to be there. The system have no way of knowing that you are using an ext-partition, as it just installs apps to /data/app, however as it's symlinked to ext, they are actually being placed in sd-ext/app.
This means that you will only see you internal memory, but it still works. Your apps will just take up less space on internal, as the apk file is placed on the ext-partition. They will still take up some space for data and dalvik cache.
edit: bonus info. Install "quick system info" or "titanium backup" from the market to see the size of your ext-partition in those apps.
edit2: and if i did not make my self clear. The partition-size info in the system settings is not supposed to be a partition manager. It's written to be userfriendly, and it only provides the regular user with the partitions they should care about(/data and /sd-card). If you want a detailed view of all your partition(and there is more than a few) go get root explorer. It'll let you play around with all the partitions mounted.(you won't have access to recovery, bootloader and so on from here)
Ok thanks. I'm new to this and there's so much info to take in
With regards to the radio is there a simple way of flashing as I have alpha rev installed the method via recovery wont work. I see alot of people talking about doing this through a terminal but I could not find a comprehensive guide for this like the xda root guide. Thanks.

Well i take it that your cache partition is too small(this is why people using alpharev cm hboot cannot use recovery for this). In that case you have already flashed another hboot(using "fastboot flash hboot hboot.img") if you haven't done this, you cache-partition should not be too small, and the recovery method should be able to do this just fine. If you have done this, use the same command to flash the radio eg "fastboot flash radio radio.img"
Either way it is very unlikely to fix your call delay(read: it won't fix your problem, as it's got nothing to do with the radio). It's a problem caused by some incompatibility between the htc libs and GB. It's quite common on GB roms apparently. Wait for HTC to release the real GB update, and we might very well be able to solve this problem.

Install android sdk:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Howto:_Install_the_Android_SDK
Copy the downloaded radio.img to e.g. partition C: on your computer (if you downloaded a zip, extract the radio.img from there). Check the md5sum!!!
Boot your into fastboot mode (start it with pressed back and power button) and connect your phone to your computer.
Now open command prompt on your computer and type
Code:
fastboot devices
It should list your device now. If it does, type
Code:
fastboot flash radio C:\radio.img
(in case your radio.img was copied to C: ).
Now, observe the computer and be patient TOUCH NOTHING!!
The process will copy the image to your phone, write the image to the radio partition and perform some magic be patient TOUCH NOTHING!!
Watch the little indicator at the top of your phone screen.
Once the process appears to finish (it may not say complete) wait a further FULL 60 SECONDS and be patient TOUCH NOTHING!!
Then, and only then, reboot your phone.

[Q] S-off and recovery advice before flashing first rom

Sorry for being a noob, but the more I read the more questions I have.
I have a Orange UK branded desire not PVT4 if I remember correctly its PVT1
Android 2.2
Radio 32.48.00.32U_5.10.05.30
Have rooted with Unrevoked3 so have ClockworkMod version 2.5.0.7
I am not s-off as not sure if the benefits outweigh the risks (flashing with fast boot risking USB brick). Does access via fastboot make it easier to rectify problems if things go wrong?
I want to install a rom that will allow me to install more apps via one of the apps2ext/sd, data2ext etc methods (preferably one that supports ext4 as that seems to perform best) so I will probably be trying a few roms.
I was planning to start out with CyanogenMod 7.0.3 for which guides seem to suggest that installing from CWM 2.5.0.7 should work fine including installing the google apps addon. However I have read that CWM 2.5.0.7 wont be able to install the addon as it doesnt support ext4 as used in gingerbread. Also I am guessing that not supporting ext4 would mean problems for nandroid backup when apps are stored on an ext4 partition of the sd card.
So would I need to change recovery for CM7 and ease of use with most other roms, dont want to have to keep changing, if so what ext4 compatible one is recomended as stable?
I know there are newer unofficial CWM, think 3.2.0.8 is the new one, but Ive heard of them causing USB bricks. Not sure about Amon_ra's as thats no loger supported either and 4EXTRecovery looks interesting but seems thats been droped to.
All advice greatly appreciated, sorry if I've missed threads with obvious answers to these questions.
Well, it is a good idea to s-off your phone if you plan to change you partition layout in order to get more internal space for installing apps and there are some other benefits too... it is somewhat risky but in my experience the risk of something going wrong is very, very small... I s-offed my device with alpharev.nl live disk, everything went smoothly...
Most of the roms support at least one or two methods of app space expansion, you should bear in mind also that it is not obligatory for ext4 partitions to perform better... the difference between ext2 and ext4 filesystems as far as I know is journaling which is not supported on ext2 and in some other things... but you shouldn't be bothered with those, just format your sdext partitions in the way the developer of the rom you are installing specified and everything should be ok... I prefer roms with d2ext or d2sd because of really big space(up to 2 Gb) and very good performance and no limitations which exist in a2sd roms unless you moved dalvik to sd...
For recovery you don't explicitly have to stick to cwm you should experiment little and find the one that is best for your needs... I had a usb brick with cwm 3.2.0.8, though usb brick can be fixed fairly easy either via fastboot or fastboot commander or from some of those recently modded recoveries... If you plan to install a rom with d2ext then i'd recommend you install either 4ext recovery (which is a mod of cwm) or rmd recovery (which is a very good mod of amonra) because these two allow you to backup all the partitions and therefore recover them in the right way...
Sorry for lengthy reply... Hope this helped a bit, if you have more questions or I skipped something just shoot...
Thanks for the info.
I don't plan to manually change the partition layout, I'll leave that down to the rom developers. When you falsh a rom, if it flashes its own hboot, does thst mean you'll loose s-off as its not set in radio for the desire but patched in hboot to ignore the security flag?
I think I'll probably use alpharev to s-off as it looks like it will be easier to access the phone to fix things in case of a problem.
I've looked at fixing a usb brick so I'm aware what to expect if it did happen, I like to be prepared. I'm not sure how I'd create the mtd0.img for my current rom as hex editing the file or creating one via a site (cant provide links) assumes a software version number of 10 characters including dots, which mine is not. Its only 9 characters - 2.17.61.3. So the site gives an error, and in hex editing a file im not sure weather to replace the 10 characters with 02.17.61.3 or 2.17.061.3 or to blank the first or last digit so there are only 9 characters. Any ideas?
Any d2ext roms you'd recommend? Any with sense as I'll miss som of the features but its not a deal breaker?
And on the issue of ext4 to my knowledge it does generally perform the best in most cases and for the our usage journalling is best disabled.
I believe that none of custom roms install hboot on it's own, so if you install a rom that needs more space than the hboot you have installed has then you are destined for doom... just kidding, it really just won't boot... so if you for example install oxygen (which is very small) you can install it on any of the hboots, only difference will be in amount of free space that you will have afterwards...
Alpharev is the way to go for s-off... Install their custom hboots and you will have no problems... Occasionally, though it never happened to me, you'll have to install a downgrader hboot in order to change hboot to another layout, but that ain't too much of a hassle...
I don't think that there is a risk of losing s-off by installing any of custom roms, s-off gets lost after flashing any of official ruu_s which return your device to stock condition...
I'm pretty sure you won't need to make that mtd0.img because most of usb-bricks get resolved by entering the following in fastboot:
fastboot oem enableqxdm 0
fastboot reboot
fastboot oem eraseconfig
if usb-brick persist then proceed to making mtd0.img, and if I remember well it doesn't really matter what digits you changed (but don't trust me with this, I resolved my brick with fastboot commands )
Most of the time I interchange between CM7 with d2ext (you have to implement d2ext script by yourself) and Wmjan's version of RcMix S (it is Sense rom) with d2ext which works perfectly (at least it does for me)... Also damo's pyramid and kingdom ports have d2ext and perform very well, but for them you need custom hboot provided with rom and they are also Sense roms... And at last x-part Miui is very nice, so experiment with those and see what fits your needs...
And at the end, I agree with you that ext4 performs best, especially without journaling, but in some very, very rare cases ext2 can be better...
Hope this was helpful
I've sorted s-off and am about to try out CM7 I'll have to look into implementing the d2ext script, haven't come across that so any pointers/links would be appreciated. I'll have a look at the roms you've mentioned, have seen RcMix S mentioned as the base for another rom.
I backed up my /misc through adb shell
Code:
dd if=/dev/mtd/mtd0 of=/sdcard/misc.img bs=4096
mostly out of curiosity to see how it compared to the ones you can download and hex. It is spaced out slightly differently at the start
thanks again
I followed instructions in this thread for CM7 d2ext implementation - Data2ext CyanogenMOD - UPDATE 26/01/11 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902395
check it out, shouldn't be difficult to set up...
