Hi, I rooted and flashed a custom ROM and wanted to know if I need to reflash if I upgrade to a bigger SD card.
Thanks

No, you won't need to reflash the ROM. Just swap the card and you should be fine.
Just wanted to make sure since the ROM does need an ext3 partition. Also my phone does not boot without the SD card.

You don't need to flash your custom ROM again.
You can put your new SD card into your phone and if you have used Clockwork Recovery for Flashing then you can boot your phone into Recovery Mode and format your new SD card.
Good Luck!
Just to make it sure... using a ROM with A2SD+ D2/EXT (Whatever), then probably have to re-flash it, because of the content on the ext3 partition.
It depends on the ROM - what did it copy on there, so if you are lucky, you'll be able to boot up, but will have a lot of missing stuff.
Simple:
If you get a new card a won't be able to boot, then partition the card, and re-flash the ROM. (BTW, I heard, that if you have linux, you can copy the content from the old card to the new one).
If you backed up everything with any backup program, then you'll have it in no-time.
You will need to partition your SD card for an ex3 partition, make sure you have a backup of everything on the SD card as partitioning it will wipe it clean.
So basically I should be able to simply plug my card in a Linux pc and copy the content from the old card to a new card..
That is bloody awesome

if you have a linux pc use gparted (or similar) to prep your sd, first fat32 for data (pics, ...), then your ext3 partition for a2sd+. If you're unsure check your old card, it should have the same layout. then copy over the content of _both_ partitions (data + a2sd+) and you're good

Hi,
I'm about to update with a new custom ROM since the one I have didn't have A2SD+ and there's just not enough space (came with MoDaCo custom ROM without additions when I got it). But I can't find any guides on how to format my SD correctly with my MacBook, do you guys know any? And do I need to download Android SDK?
Also, how big is the difference between A2SD and A2SD+? I only have the 4GB SD that came in the box.
Thanks.
Can I use ROM Manager to partition my SD card?
EDIT: Sorry mods, should've posted this in General, I guess. Please move.
You can partition in recovery. I have a Mac too and that's the only way I did it.
The main difference between A2SD and the + variety is that Dalvik cache is also moved to the SD card when using A2SD+.
Thanks! But everything on my SD card will be erased, right? Will I still be able to update the ROM after? Or should I update first?
Sorry, first time doing this.
Backup all the contents of your card to your Mac first. Flash the ROM, then before booting up for the first time, partition your SD card. Boot up your phone and copy back the contents of your card to the FAT 32 partition. I used to set up my card like this: swap-0mb, ext2-512mb, fat32-remainder. Then convert ext2 to ext3.
Also remember to do a full wipe before flashing the ROM.

Okay, I will try that! Thanks!
Hello guys, i have a question, some may call it noob some may thought it themselves. i am currently rooted and using mcr3.1 without problems at all but i don't have the apps2sd.
i want to try it and i baked a new rom from the kitchen with the a2sd+ option integrated but i don't want to mess up my current sdcard and want to use another one i have. can i do that ???
as i see it i must do the following:
1) while my CurrentCard is inserted make a nandroid from the fake-flash recovery
2) turn off the phone and insert the new card
3) put the update.zip (for fake-flash) and the baked rom onto the sd card
4) now go into recovery (fake-flash) and choose to install new rom
will this work ok ?????
in addition as i see on my SDCARD some applications like titanium backup or astro or htc mail, rom manager, wifi tether etc have some files on it into their respective folders. will i be ok if i copy-paste them after the procedure into their folders in the fat partition???? or the a2sd+ uses some other m,ethod for the apps to store their info ????
THANKS for all the help
That should be fine...just don't forget to partition the new sd card for a2sd
do i need to make it with gparted or the rom makes it by default ???
The recovery image has it all. Look!

yeah i haven't taken a look into the recovery before...is there any update.zip that adds the a2sd+ to my current configuration ????
No because it's already part of the rom. Your sd just needs partitioning correctly.
Back up your sd card, boot into recovery. Go to partition menu and partition sd card.
Mine is swap 0, ext 512, fat remaining space. Then you can copy your sd backup back to the fat32 partition.
That's it all apps will install to sd card.
Can anybody tell me if there is any way of co-copying the EXT3 partition from one SD Card to another using a PC?
I currently have a 16G card and use a cooked rom with A2SD but wish to use a 32G card and want to copy all my A2SD installed apps across so changing the card is seamless.
Also one other question, if a format the card in FAT32 using a PC, will that remove the EXT partition?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers
Jason
eazy mode, create a nandroid backup + ext. copy it to your pc put in bigger SD copy nandroid on it and do a nandroid restore.

thanks for the advice, that should come handy sooner or later
Or if you have a Linux Live CD lying around then you can just mount your sd card in Linux and it will mount FAT32 and also EXT partition so you can just copy the contents.
You have a choice of methods although Nandroid is the most obvious choice. Nandroid. Copy sd fat32 part contents to pc then copy to new card. Nandroid restore.
Install clockwork recovery and make a backup, then insert your new SD , create a Ext3 partition using clockwork recovery. Copy your backup from the old to the new card and then Use unrevoked recovery to restore the Ext3 partition.

Thanks for all the advice, haven’t used nandroid backup yet but have ClockworkMod Recovery flashed so will give it a go!

Easiest way imo ;D

This does not work. I did what you said, but when I do a nandriod restore it gets to the bit of restoring the ext3 partition and then states that the partition does not exist and so skips it.
I think I would be able to use titanium back up to restore my apps but I can’t create an ext3 partition on my new card. The custom rom I am using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741663 wont boot with out an ext3 partition and the only way I know of creating an ext3 partition is though rom manager which requires the phone to be booted
So I am stuck?
You will likely have to create the ext partition first in linux. Try parted magic live cd, clockwork puts it at the end of the card, not sure why but best to stick with that just in case.

I can never get this to work, it always says I need root privlidges to write to the new cards ext partition, and it's anyones guess to what the root password is with these Live CD's.

generally there isnt one, and if there is it would probably be "toor" (root backwards).
if you want root privelages in the file explorer what i usually do is type "sudo nautilus" from terminal (on ubuntu).
but i would just use gparted to copy both ext and fat partitions to the new sd, then expand the fat partition if the sdcard is bigger.

Fat partition has to be first, otherwise windows can't read the card. It is confused by ext which it doesn't understand.
Guess how I know ;-)
Hi,
I bought a new 16Gb microsd hc card after installing the RCMixHD rom in order to give it a 2gb ext size.
Right now im using 8gb-512 ext3 goldcard.
Unfortunately when i put the 16gb in the device (after fat32 quick format)- the device doesnt load
Its HBOOT driver is recognized by windows but i cant get the device to load.
Any ideas?
Many thanks ahead.
rcmix installs part of the rom on the ext partition of sd card that is why the phone wont boot.
1. use a card reader to format your new card and copy the backup of your old card onto the new one (dont forget the rom which you wish to flash again, i suppose rcmix)
2. turn off your phone place in the new card
3. go into hboot, wipe everything and flash the rom
your rom should be working now with your new sd card
(Using this method will cause that you loose all the data that was previously on the phone, but personally i feel: New Card --> New Start and clean flash, that way you can ensure everything is working properly!)

Thanks a lot!
I have a feeling this might work
by the way- in which part should i create the ext partition?
before flashing the rom i guess?
and with which recovery could i make this partition to 2gb size?
Thanks again!

Or..
You can make a Nandroid backup with your old card inside, then partition the newcard with one Fat32 and one ext3 (for A2SD+), copy the folder "Clockworkmod" from the old card to new one, Insert new card, Goto Recovery, Nandroid restore all..
Should work.
Before doing this, make a Titanium backup too..

yes partition before you flash the rom.
And to create the ext partition with the correct size:
You can use amonra to create the ext, clockworkmod 2.1.5.2 (or something one of the newer versions can also do this) --> these work from recovery
I used gParted (a bootable cd, is very useful), you could use fdisk too! With these tools create the ext partition after the fat32 partition otherwise windows will want to format the sd card. (I guess depends on what OS you are using) --> i would use one of these 2 as you have more control over the process
Hello Guys
Just received a new sd card for my desire but after searching the net how to copy all the content from my old sd card I couldnt find anything Im looking for which is why im making this topic.
Anyway I have an 8gb card with 1gb ext3, swap0, and willing to upgrade to 16gb ext4, do I just make the nand backup + ext and then restore it? or it wont restore because of the ext3 and ext4 ?
Regards
C.
ps. dalvik is also moved to sd card
ps2. ive accessed the OLD ext partition on my windows pc using the ext2read program and found 3 folders there, app, app=private and dalvik, so do I just copy those onto the new sd + all the files from fat32 partition onto the new one and will that work?
Hi,
Yes,
Imo could Linux do these tasks better but your option will do it also.
First make a nand backup and than cope the fat stuff to the new card and after that put the ext folders in your new ext partition.
Should work, be sure the kernel of your rom supports ext4
Kind regards

LINK THERE TO A REALLY GOOD EXT4 ALIGNMENT ZIP
Just create your partition as normal then flash the zip from recovery

Ive copied all the fat32 files and then restored the sd-ext and seems to be working, had few fcs so far but when I will have more time I will reinstall everything

I think its tough task for me
No its not. Simple. Backup nandroid + ext, put new card in, format to fat32 + ext, nandroid restore. Copy old card fat32 contents to new fat32. Done.

When upgrading sdcard I used PC software to backup whole partitons and then restore them to new sdcard. That was very succesful. I hope this will help)
