[Q] 3.6.360 US update gives me "exclamation mark" screen - Defy General

Hi,
I just got a Motorola Defy and rooted it, as well as removed some apps with titanium backup. I've been getting the message for the 3.6.360 update, and when I download and install it, it stops halfway and I get the screen with the white exclamation point in the yellow triangle. The phone then won't respond, but when I remove my battery I'm able to start it up again normally. I'm not really too familiar with the android os; I'm just starting to experiment with it. I tried unrooting and updating, but the same thing happens. I even tried following post #20 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931212&page=2 but the recovery app doesn't boot the phone into recovery mode. And powering on while holding the volume down (or up, I forget) doesn't take me to a recovery menu. Can someone please help me? Thank you

make sure usb debugging is off when you try to boot into recovery mode

That seems to have done something, but now it doesn't want to make a ROM backup. I don't think I have clockworksmod installed, but there's no version for the Defy. Is there one that still worksl? The only ones it says is Droid, Droid 2 and a third motorola phone

this version works with the defy used it my self http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875233

I've tried it, but it gives me three options for the phone model. I clicked Milestone and it just got the exclamation mark again; Defy isn't there at all. How did you use it?

I think you are still trying to use the clockwork mod which is not what you want to use...if you are using the one that drops a menu down and shows milestone, droid x and droid 2 as options when you try to backup rom (I think those were the options), they you are using the wrong one. If you use tenfars system recovery app that the previous poster posted with link...you should be good as this app was custom made for the defy.

darule, will that app allow me to flash my firmware to install custom ROMs? I've been looking everywhere for answers but keep hitting dead ends

[Q] Desire Z - Custom ROM Install problems

Hello All,
(this may of been asked before, but I havent found it yet)
I have a UK HTC Desire Z (Simfree). Until around 3 days ago, I didnt want to root it and mess around with custom roms. When I finally decided that il just flash a rom to it (as ive now got a shiny new Galaxy S 2), i was faced with a maze. and three-quarters.
I had it updated with the OTA update when it came out, and found out that its impossible to root that, so i downgraded to froyo using a thread in xda developers and the stock rom -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
After doing that, I set about rooting the device with VISIONary. All went fine.
When I wanted to put ClockworkMod recovery onto the device, thats where im completley baffled.
I got the program 'ROM Manager' off Android Market, and then flashed the recovery thingy onto the device. yesterday night when I was doing this, i was getting a phone and a red triangle with a ! and didnt know what to do. Then i found a menu (Think it was called 'Android Recovery' or the like) and didnt know what to do. So, I reflashed the stock froyo rom (mentioned before) and started again.
When I rooted this time, I used a guide on Cyanogen Mod - http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting and it all went sucessfully. MD5's matched and everything.
I installed Clockwork Mod (Using ROM Manager), but when i try to boot into the Clockworkmod recovery thing, I get that red triangle and ! thingy mentioned before.
After I reflashed stock froyo AGAIN, i got the clockworkmod menu, BUT when i selected anything and pressed the power button, it just took me to a screen with the ROM Manager logo and thats it. Nothing else happend.
I also tried flashing a rom by selecting it in the ROM Manager App, it basicilly rebooted the phone, and reinstalled Stock Froyo all over again.
Can someone PLEASE Help me, Im pretty much clueless now. All I know is the phone is 'S-OFF'. Any help would be great!
Thanks in advance, Aman.

When you press the power button in cwm, it takes you back and since there is nothing to go back to, it just takes you to the cwm logo screen. Just push the trackpad to get back.

I actually had a case of clockwork gone wrong on my G2. I'm assuming you have basic knowledge of adb, so try pushing the ckockwork recovery.img via adb. Solved all my problems, can't boot to stock recovery if it doesn't exist

Help please - trouble with CWM / Recovery, new ROM

Hello all,
I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post, but I thought I'd give it a try.
I own a Desire myself and the rooting / flashing a new ROM process was pretty easy so I thought I can help a friend out and put a custom ROM on his new Motorola Defy. Turns out I sucked at it. *ahem*
Right, the problem is as follows:
I got the brand new device, used SuperOneClick to root it, tried ROM Manager to install ClockworkMod CWM and it said Defy isnt supported in ROM Manager. So I google'd and it came up with this [german] (not allowed to post links), which basically gave me CWM.zip with an apk in it, which installed "System Recovery" and gave me the option to "Install System Recovery" and Reboot into Recovery - successfully bootet into CWM 2.5.1.8 , alright.
I did a nandroid backup and then wiped everything, selected the ROM on the sdcard to install MIUI 1.9.9 ROM, which worked fine. After it finished installing, I chose reboot system now.
Now what happens is:
I try to boot normally: I Only get the Motorola logo on screen and nothing ever happens
I boot into recovery like I used to know (Power + VolDown), I get a screen with a yellow exclamation mark and the android robot on it. Figured out that both volume keys take me to Android System Recovery Utility. I wiped everything again, that didn't help. I tried giving it the CWM.zip as an update.zip but it refuses that because it's apparently not properly signed. I can't do anything else in there. It also gives me a couple of errors "E: Can't moint CACHE:recovery/command" (/caller, /log)
Please, can anybody help me out? It seems I can't boot any ROM from it right now, nor do I know how to get CWM back in to at least even restore the nandroid backup (which I still have).
I would love to, at the end of the day, have a rooted device with CWM running and MIUI 1.9.9. If that doesn't work, at least can I restore the CWM backup somehow to have to stock ROM running?
I would really appreciate any help very much and realize I may be in over my head, it just seemed too easy on the Desire I previously used. Thanks a lot!

[Q] Will not boot into recovery

I recently got a defy and the person i got it from said it was rooted already. Super User was present but he didn't have Rom Manager, I went to the market and downloaded it. when I try to boot into recovery it hangs on the Triangle screen. I pulled Bat, and tried to boot into recovery and using rom manager and got the same thing. I have sdk and adb tools already loaded on my computer but I am still extremely new to all of this. I tried to root again with super 1 click but that doesn't work. Is there another way of rooting, Even if its more difficult I dont mind I just want to get this figured out. Thanks in advance
It probably is rooted. The thing is, we have a locket bootloader so default recovery can't be changed. You can install 2nt init. You will have to reboot and next reboot again. There are guides it you are ensure. It's an app in the market. Next go to rom manager, select install => defy => already installed cmw. And afterwards you can use it.
Read through the all-in-beginners-guide and you will find all answers.
You should press both Vol UP and Vol DOWN at the same time on the triangle screen to acess the recovery menu
Follow this
hey if you are stuck follow this thread to install CM7 on your defy
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079150
it will work i have also followed this.
and if u still have prob then message will solve this for u dude.

[Q] HELP -- rooted Espresso won't enter recovery mode

I rooted my phone last week, but I have only been able to access the recovery mode through the ADB script each time. I was able to install a custom ROM (he latest version of HaXpresso) and subsequently back it up, but now I cannot enter recovery mode at all. Even the ADB script method gives me an error message and will not progress beyond the triangle screen. I even tried superoneclick, which verifies the fact that my phone is rooted. I'm hoping to flash a different custom ROM but can't seem to figure out how.
Hi, long time lurker of the forums here, but not sure how much help I will be. If you're at the recovery triangle screen, try hitting the power button, maybe waiting a little bit before you do. Not sure why, but my Espresso sometimes gets stuck at the triangle screen ( the ClockwordMod one, not the red recovery one ), and pushing the power button gets the ClockwordMod menu to show.
Also, if you can still connect to the phone via adb, this ( Android Commander ) might help you in terms of flashing another ROM or something, but just make sure you know what you're doing, or probably wait until someone more knowledgable than me chimes in :

Anyways, in case I didn't help, what method did you use to root your phone? If anyone can help, knowing that might help them... help.

Doesn't work downloading mode on defy plus

I tried to update my defy plus from the phone.
When the phone downloaded the update, its asked me if i want to upgrade now.
I choose yes.
Its restarted to downloading mode, but after second it apear a exclamation mark in a white triangle.
I can't use any rom, because this.
I tried whit Odin, and Rom menager pro, but still have this problem, and i can't read any of this problem. Am i stupid, or its a real problem, and how could be solve it?
ODIN is used for flashing ROMs on Samsung phones. The exclamation mark with triangle is the stock recovery. Try pressing vol+ and vol- together and you will get options. I have never updated my phone OTA, so I don't know the procedure. Try selecting 'install update.zip'. If you know the SBF version, you can download it and flash using RSDLite.
I would suggest you to read the beginners guide in the general section before doing anything as you sound noob
