is it ok to do OTA if you're rooted?

Yup works fine. sofar sogood..

How bout if u have Cwm and voodoo kernel installed?
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

I installed the update, lost root and haven't been able to run z4root to root my device since then. However this update fixed the problems I had with using gmail exchange servers in the samsung e-mail app. Now I just need to get rooted again and figure out how to disable gmail app notifications.

you tried one click root?

Not yet, I'm at work right now and my work machine is running linux. I was planning on trying it tonight when I got home

OT
For those of you who are rooted, which method seems to be best right now.
I want to do it but was waiting to see some rom action
Also is everyone using the same recovery these days?
I was looking for Sprint specific info but its kind of muttled up in here.
Thanks

Im having the same issue. I am really keaning toward a T-Mobile Tab or the ipad2.

I definitely LOST root when I applied the update, I tested and retested with multiple root apps, also I couldn't unroot or root using z4root at all after this, z4root would simply crash. However using oneclickroot on PC I was able to root the device again after the update and I was able to run lcd density and all my other root apps again.

might i ask how you actually pulled this update and zipped it up? Where are ota updates located on the system?
any modem files in this.

I did not lose root when I installed the system update that came OTA. I originally rooted with z4root.
Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA App

how strange, did you confirm that the update actually installed successfully? I wonder why mine would lose root and yours wouldn't.

IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT UPDATE
If you guys changed your WPA_SUPPLICANT file to allow AD-HOC networks, the update FILL FAIL.
So restore the original/stock WPA supplicant file before you try the update, or itll just fail and made no difference. I'll keep you posted, im going to do the update right now
Also make sure your using STOCK DPI LCD Density or it will fail as well. Its stock 240.

go back in to your about galaxy tab and check for updates and check for new firmware; if it hasn't installed yet then I believe that it should attempt to install again. You can match the new baseband version, build number, and qik version to see if you are running the new update.

it tried to install before OTA but failed due to different WPA_supplicant and LCD Density change (give a buildprop error).
Now im doing the manual update, i just changed the zip to update.zip. Now it seems to be working.
UPDATE COMPLETE: btw, the new sprint logo is CRAP. i liked the original Samsung Logo! anyway to change that back. I'll keep you guys posted on any new things i find.
Ok this does Break ROOT!
If it doesnt break root for you, then the update did not go through. Check your settings "about my galaxy tab".

My update is failing because I'm running a modified Gallery. Like an idiot I didn't backup the original app. Anyone know where I can snag a copy of the stock Gallery3D.apk and .odex?
-edit-
Nevermind... found a modified ROM that was using the stock Gallery app. Just pulled it from that and presto, update applied without errors.
-edit
Hmm... though when it rebooted it said the update failed to apply and I should try again. Though the sprint logo at boot the version numbers tell a different story. Odd.

[Q] Verizon OTA Update

Verizon is pushing out an OTA update for VCast, Slacker, and other stuff.
Anyone have some experience with this? Is it going to un-root my phone? Because that would be, well, a pain.
I'm pretty sure that it won't unroot it, but if you made any modifications to the stock applications, it won't even run. It would fail the md5 or signature tests or whatever.
At least thats how I remember it working last time.
And wrong section.
The update has been pushed to my phone. Now I'm getting that annoying popup every 30 seconds to update my software. I'm running the warm two point two rom which is based off of the evo framework. Should I try to do the update and let it fail or not?

That pop up is annoying. Where is the update stored? I checked the root of my SD and it is not there. I was thinking of just deleting it.

Same here. I see no changes at all as of now.
Moved to Q&A as not development
Kinda new but I had to hack a lot to get it installed
I was getting the popup as well and it was failing every time. You can download the OTA and try installing it from the recovery but if you removed any VZW app's it will fail more specifically VzNav.apk in my case.
I did some poking around the OTA update once I downloaded it. The file "updater-script" in META-INF\com\google\android is the file I modified to remove the asserts for the apk's I removed once rooted.
After the install was complete I used the instructions on the site below to redo root, but I have s-off so I believe if you don't have that it won't work for you.

Disable 2.51.1 OTA update

Hi Guys and Girls,
I got a little popup today to tell me that my phone is due an upgrade to 2.51.1 -
I selected download, then realised this might not be a bright idea.
The upgrade hasn't been done yet, but I'm being continually prompted to "Install now" and I have to keep selecting "Install later".
1. Where is the update that downloaded to my phone (so I can delete it)
2. How can I disable future OTA updates
I believe if you rename the BlurUpdater.apk in /system/app, that should stop it. This thread should help (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=856104).
For example, I just renamed BlurUpdater.apk to BlurUpdater.rem.
Ok, I moved Fota.apk and BlurUpdater.apk - hopefully that should stop the nagging.
AFAIK 2.51.1 has been rooted now, but there's no JIT/DEOX build available yet (ala Frozen Eclair)?
Doesn't seem like there is. But if you check out the Frozen Eclair thread in Android Dev, looks like someone was able to load the 2.34 JIT onto a phone with 2.51.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11168992&postcount=153
Well after reading that 2.51.1 is supposed to be much better than 2.21 I figured I may aswell upgrade, especially since it has been rooted.
So I removed the permanent root and tried the OTA update, but it failed about one third in on the progress bar and displayed an exclamation mark with the little android robot. Any ideas?

I'm not sure about the 2.51 update as I'm on T-mobile USA. But I remember some people saying that if you remove any of the original apks, you'll need to replace them to stock. Again, I know that applies to the T-Mo USA update, not sure about anything else.
Oh, its worth mentioning that I did put the stock applications back on.

[GUIDE] What to do if you get the UPDATE Notification (OTA) while rooted.

Ok, so I've seen this question asked I don't know how many times in each Rom at the Dev Section and also in the General Forum so I decided to make a quick guide.
- If you're on any ROM or even stock rooted and get prompted to update to the new update you can do a couple things.
1.- If you don't already have Titanium Back up, Download it from the market and FREEZE Device Management. Once you freeze it just reboot and the update will go away. I was going to recommend Bloat Freezer, but I couldn't find it on the Market, not sure what's going on with that.
This is the easiest step * ** *
Titanium Backup - https://market.android.com/search?q=titanium+back+up&c=apps
*An alternative would be using Root Explorer -
Under System/ App/ wssyncmldm.apk Just delete.
Root Explorer - https://market.android.com/search?q=root+explorer&c=apps
2.- If you must have the update for some reason and don't want to just flash a ROM that's already 2.3.6, then it's best to go back to stock. UPDATE will not work unless you have STOCK RECOVERY on your phone.
To go back to stock refer to this Guide made by Jangst123.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321811
3.- You can also try to flash your nandroid backup and then Odin the stock recovery. You also might need the stock kernel if you had a custom one installed, in this case flash Stock kernel first before your nandroid.
Stock Kernel - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2510030/kernel-stock.zip
4.- If you're only rooted with the stock Rom you can try to update without doing anything, but you will lose Root. There has been reports that it has worked for some, but not for others.
Be Careful with what you decide to do!!
== The update you are getting is NOT ICS, it is an update to 2.3.6 and for the Wifi Calling App. == In order for Wifi calling to work you MUST have the New Sim card that came with the phone. If you don't have one go to your T-mobile store and get one. =
*** If you rather just get the Baseband/Modem by itself then you can get it from here http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11883-odin-tmo-sgsii-modem-collection-eam-kang12142011/
Thanks to Team Kang.
Hope this HELPS, now if people only used the SEARCH engine. I think I'm going to make a guide on how to use it, LOL.
*I am not responsible if you damage your expensive phone in any way. Use this guide at your own risk.*
Or....... just use free es file explorer on market ( don't forget to enable root under its settings ) and backup/delete both wssync apk's under /system/app. Then reboot
Takes less than 2 minutes and can be done without odin, firmware flashing, ect

Bloat Freezer is definitely not an app to use for freezing the Device management app anymore. An earlier forum post pointed out that it's been pulled from the market, and as this article cites, with good reason. Alternatives suggested are SystemCleanup, NoBloat, and as the OP pointed out, Titanium Backup.
Good Luck..
thank you for the thread
Hi, i went back to stock everything, and i haven't had a prompt for the update yet. I updated previously, is that the reason why?
= The update you are getting is NOT ICS, it is an update to 2.3.6 and for the Wifi Calling App. == In order for Wifi calling to work you MUST have the New Sim card that came with the phone. If you don't have one go to your T-mobile store and get one. =
Ok what if the next update is ICS and i'm rooted and I want to update? Will it mess anything up if It tries to update?
Thanks, a simple guide with an easy solution.

If there were only a version of this that worked on the Epic 4g Touch (Sprint version of SGS II), we're having a problem with that right now.

Thank you for the heads up. I read that article and seems like this Trey guy is a bit shady. Which one do you use jasnn? I plan on buy Titanium backup in the near future before I start loading custom roms, but I am looking to leave the stock rom for now and just get rid most the t-mobile preinstalled stuff. In all fairness I was pretty impressed with the dnla app allshare and also Kies Air but there was just sooo much preloaded junk.

Do you have Download Manager 2.3.6?
If so try that one.
Are you already on 2.3.6? Because I noticed Device Management is no longer there once I updated to 2.3.6.
But you're on Sprint, so not exactly sure what it's called.

How do I ignore 4.0.4 update notification?

My phone is rooted and it wont update OTA. How can i permanently ignore this stupid dialog box popping up every 2 minutes on my phone about the upgrade to 4.0.4?
You could try freezing the update process through your task manager/etc. Hope this helps.

Just change your build prop and add the latest version to it. Its a quick 2 second text change. I just don't have the exact text to be copied. Its around here somewhere in one of the threads though.

Rooting has no impact on OTA updates' ability to install. You must have something else that is not stock on your device.
As for how to disable it, you need to edit your build.prop file. Change the line that starts with ro.build.fingerprint to whatever it is on an IMM76K ROM. Ask someone who is already running it for the correct text.

Yup, that is what the OP needs. All he has to do is change his ro.build.fingerprint to match that, and he will no longer get the OTA notification.
I dont know anything about build props. Damn.
I also have nothing else done to my phone, just root. I dont think i even have any programs that need root, just did it to do it.

Build.prop is just a text file in the root directory. You can browse to it with root explorer and edit it. Just make a copy of the original and stick it somewhere sexy before doing your edits incase you change something incorrectly.
That way you can come back and ask how to copy a backup to another location when your phone wont boot .
And heres some props for rooting just to root.

I encountered the same thing after rooting. I know there are ways to force the message to stop, but it will time out after a few days. I no longer get the pop-up.
Also, even though your phone is rooted, if you click the OTA dialogue box, your phone will attempt to download the OTA update. And this could brick your phone or put you into a boot loop. So be careful not to activate it.
OTA updating a rooted phone shouldn't brick or boot-loop it. Only thing that should happen is that you won't have root after the update.
That is, unless you install OTA Rootkeeper from the app store.

New update?

Is anyone else getting prompted for a system update? I'm rooted so I don't want to install. Update is 154.6 MB.

Hey guys I just installed the update and it broke my root :cyclops:
Were you able to root again?
Apparently it's D85110m update. So it's updating from D85110c to m. The person that I saw that updated hadn't rooted so no clue on the rooting thing.
Count me in the group with system update notification. I got rid of it by installing xposed module GravityBox, going under status bar settings - ongoing notification blocker - Google Play services (picture looks like that of update) - reboot.
I don't know what other notifications this may block, but for now, it gets rid of that. Also of note, I would NOT take the OTA. Usually it breaks root and/or bootloops you.

I haven't tried to re-root yet. I was rooted with stump root earlier. Stump root doesn't work again because it thinks that my phone is already rooted. I'm going to do some light battery tests before trying to root again, this time with purple drake.
Maybe i might restore the slimkat alpha and hide there until this gets sorted out
I decided not to update to fear my bootloader/root so I tried to extract this with file manager and kept crashing. I can only post the name of the file but above users are correct contains 10m from 10c hopefully devs can find out exactly what's in the update. b1847cae892006ffa11c6822a408fe8528142a54.D85110c_00-D85110m_00_update.zip

I believe so yes. But if you are truly bootlooping, I don't believe you have many (if any) other choices than wiping clean and starting fresh.
I'm all stock so I upgraded.
It is in fact D85110m
I've only had it up and running for a few minutes and I already noticed two things.
- There is a slider feature added to the lock screen to instantly open the camera.
- I didn't think the phone was sluggish or laggy out of the box but I immediately could tell it runs smoother now with transitions between screens/apps. e.g. There used to be a bit of lag when opening the Recent Apps. Not anymore.
We'll see how it goes.
The IR blaster works better for me now. I guess the update made it more powerful somehow.
if you have twrp installed or have modified /system you should not take this OTA. if on twrp things will get weird(as evidenced above..) and if removing/modding any default files in /system the zip will most likely fail.. as it checks for all original files first before the OTA update gets patched in.
as for the twrp issue.. I can only assume that it's due to the update/phone expecting stock recovery... and not getting it. there are flags set in the phone that tell the phone what mode to boot into... since you dont have stock recovery the phone is confused. check out this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451696
the fota and misc partitions are tied to this... try to zero out fota first. if that alone doesnt let you out of twrp... you may need to wipe misc. be sure to backup any partition to computer(dont just save on phone sdcard.. never know when it could get wiped..) before erasing anything.
as for this update(10m)... anyone taking it should be careful that the bootloader/downgrades have not been locked/blocked. I'll be waiting for others to take that risk first before even considering taking the ota.
*update* can confirm update is safe.. bootloader is not locked.. still rootable.
as for root... I doubt purple drake is blocked.. but is possible. I'm very sure Stump is still available as an option(tho app may need update).
if you got the update and dont want to take it.. and want the notification gone you should be able to use a file explorer to delete the update zip from the the /cache directory... as well as rename the LGFOTA.apk file in /system to LGFOTA.apk.bak.
I can also confirm that disabling OTA updates in the hidden menu works. the moment I set it back to "on" (i set mine to off day 1) and rebooted the update came in.
d851 hidden menu > wlan test > ota setting > off > reboot (if you have been notified of an available update do NOT reboot until you have deleted the ota zip first)
