[Q] Does OTA update bootloader? - Defy General

Hi all,
I have a t-mobile UK handset currently on stock 2.21 firmware. I know there will be an OTA update soon, but to be able to keep root and to be able to use custom roms in future, I am presuming I need to avoid the OTA update when it comes out as it might update the bootloader to 2.51 which is non-downgradeable.
Is this correct, and is 2.21 currently the best bootloader to keep?
Thank you.

Will a new rooting method need to be found for official FroYo?

As title... once the official upgrade comes out will we still be able to root?

Ask nostradamus.
I guess it will only be needed if the Official Rom comes with a new bootloader.
But even then i guess they can manage to repack it so that the bootloader don't get updated.

[Q] HTC One X from HK using in India

I have the One X from HK and am using it in India. I rooted and unlocked the device but am still on the stock rom and software version 1.26.708.2 - Which OTA update applies to me? I'm not able to force the update on the phone (keeps spinning when looking for update) - Do I have to un-root and re-lock in order to get this OTA update? Sorry if this is a repeat question...

The newest one is 1.28.708.10. I live in Australia and I have the same phone as you (from HK) and I got the OTA update yesterday (1.28.708.10). I did re-locked my phone and ran the RUU 1.26.708.3 before I did the OTA update.

Is it because I'm in India that I haven't gotten the update yet? Is it carrier specific?

I don't think it's carrier specific. Because when I bought my 2nd One X (Optus handset) and I use a Telstra sim card I still got the Optus update for my handset. And I didn't have any sim card on the HK handset when I got the OTA update I only had the wifi turned on and downloaded the OTA update via wifi.

Just a reminder that you need to be on a "stock" ROM unrooted and have stock recovery and locked bootloader. Personally I would go back to full stock (bootloader locked, stock recovery and stock ROM) and then you can try to update. I'm not sure but being rooted even if you are using stock ROM might give you the problem of not seeing the OTA update, but saying that I am not 100% sure if being rooted can create that problem. It is better to be on all stock is just my opinion.
Still on 1.26
Hi guys, I still haven't updated my phone to 1.28 or 1.29. Running 1.26, still rooted and unlocked. Is the best option for me to re-lock bootloader and use the 1.29 RUU file to do a manual update? Having issues with battery so want to do this asap, thanks for any help.
Finally updated
I was able to finally update after re-locking, putting back stock recovery and using RUU to get to 1.29. Titanium backup is pretty awesome and came in handy to restore phone to almost original state, thanks for your help.

update problems

Hi guys. I have this sgh i747(unlocked) im using it in Europe and i have updated it with kies to 4.1.1. now i want to update is further more but idk how. I cant do it OTA cuz i dont have American card. Is therr any way to update it without getting rooted? And if thete is pls tell me if phone will get locked after that. Thanks in advance, im kinda noobish when it comes with updates. excuses
Is your 4.1.1 ROM completely stock? Have you tried doing an OTA update via wifi?
Once your phone it sim unlocked, it will not re-lock after an update.
Unlocking is permanent, just to confirm. And afaik, the only way you'll be able to update without flashing a custom recovery (I assume you don't want this since you don't want root), is to flash the 4.3 (MJB) firmware via Odin. You can find it in a thread in the General section.
After updating to 4.3, use the OTA made available in the same General section to update to 4.4.2.

HTC M8 Hong Kong Help (No version_main)

Hi everyone!
I recently unlocked my bootloader and rooted my m8.
I tried using firewater to "s-off" my phone and unfortunately, it did not work out. The way I understand it, I cannot install stock ROMs (such as the 5.0.1 GPE) without "s-off." Now, I want to unroot my phone and stick to waiting for the OTAs to roll out instead.
I followed the instructions in the "returning to stock" thread and noticed that I have no version main (see attached image). I looked around the forums and saw that the advice was to flash the latest TWRP version. Since I'm stuck with a phone that I cannot update, I'm trying to be careful now. Can anyone please confirm if flashing the latest TWRP will bring my version main back?
The noob in me also has a few questions/requests as well:
1. Since my phone is rooted, I cannot receive OTA updates and upgrade to lollipop once these updates roll out?
2. Please tell me which files to download to return to stock. Just trying to be really careful this time around.
3. Lastly, is it also true that I can only install custom ROMs once have rooted? As to stock ROMs, I can't install them until I get "s-off"?
Thanks a lot, everyone! Cheers!
