[Q] HTC Desire stuck in boot loop - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I need some help. I recently rooted by HTC Desire and loaded Froyo. Everything has been working perfectly. That is until I tried to run a system update.
Firstly, I got the error "cannot verify file-signature", so I renamed the update to SDCARD: update.zip and ran this from the recovery screen.
The update seemed to run fine, until I was asked to reboot the phone... now it's stuck it a constant boot cycle only getting as far as the splash screen.
Can anyone help me ?

If you rooted your phone than don't do system updated scan.
Did you make a nandroid backup after you rooted your phone?
Have you tried rebooting in recovery mode and wipe cache and wipe data/factory and then flash your phone with the rom again?
Could also try just wipeing cache.
If that dosen't work you might have to format the sd card but i wouldn't jump to doing that and if you do that you should mount your sd card via recovery mode and take the data ther you don't want to lose, like your nandroid backup and other stuff.
If not i would try that before you do it you should nandroid backup your phone!

Wiping all user data won't make a difference. A factory reset will remove all data form the data partition but sysyem stays the same, and that is where the problem is.
If you get the signature verification failed it can mean two things. Either the file was not singed or it was singed but got corrupted/changed. What where you trying to flash?
If you can still boot in to recovery, reflash a rom (with a full wipe) you still have on the sd or mount you sd as mass storage and copy a new rom to the sd.

Just in case, to do a factory reset, choose the "CLEAR STORAGE" option which can be found under the HBOOT menu.. That's what I did when my phone kept getting stuck in a bootloop once, I also did a full wipe + dalvik cache wipe, and then flashed the ROM and it worked.

I cannot do a factory reset. I tried it... same issue. The boots to the flash screen, then gets stuck in a loop. Screen off, vibrate/flash screen on, screen off, vibrate/splash screen on, etc, etc.
Looks like I'll need to do something a little more drastic. Re-flash perhaps ?

Yes, you can try without wiping if you want to keep your data but best thing is a full wipe and reflash.

Am haveing the same problem thinking i unrooted my desire and istalled froyo rom did up date.
My problem seems to be little more then just reboot loop i get red triangle at recovery Fake flash didnt help.
Any ideas?

Oh please, give a solution! on this problem!
I've done the same update and got into a boot loop.
The problem is, I can't get into the recovery menu to flash my backup.
And also tried to reflash the recovery, but Unrevoked won't recognize the phone.
WHAT SHOULD I DO??????

So you updated a rooted phone with an OTA update?
could you post more details.
eg. the rom you are using, the original rom that was on the phone, branded etc....

OK. It's a NOT branded Desire with original Android 2.2 (ROM version 2.10405...), HBOOT 0.93, etc. And yes, I have done system update after Unrevoked rooting (I know it's a mistake)
Any ideas?

download this..
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed.exe
boot your phone into fastboot - power and BACK button.
connect to pc.
your phone should display FASTBOOT USB.
run the exe you downloaded as administrator and with any antivirus turned off.
wait...
done...
this will put your phone back to stock and will wipe everything but not your sdcard.
let us know how you get on

Thanks, I've already got that answer. Now trying to download the RUU with my poor connection.....

by the way, do I need a sim in the phone during this process?

I don't think it matters.

Just finished flashing the stock rom. It's really the only way to bring the phone alive

[Q] Help.... phone stuck in saying "CyanogenMod 7"...

HI... i updated my phone with cyanogen 7 rc2, but after it booted up it's stuck in the animation that says cyanogen mod 7 , and the blue android sign... in comes than goes, again it comes... about 20 min stuck... what to do???
It sounds like you need to go into recovery mode and delete all your caches. If you are using ClockworkMod recovery do the following (make sure you are backed up first):
Delete all user data and info (under wipe data/ factory reset),
Wipe cache (under wipe cache partition),
Wipe Dalvik Cache (under advanced).
Then once you've done that try installing and running the ROM again.
i done that one time... for info im using AmonRA.. i cleaned all the cache and everything also... and installed again... nothing happens... fortunately i restored my nand backup and booted my phone with the OTA again... waiting for some answer.... do u think that installing stable version can fix this?
Sounds like a bad flash. I had rc2 running for a month or so with no issues. I've had times when the rom just doesn't install properly ans reflashing fixes it.
Download the zip again, if possible check md5 to make sure it's all good, make sure you have the desire/bravo GSM version, clear everything and flash just the rom and nothing else. If it boots, then go back and flash your gapps and whatever else you want.

thx for replying.. as i was waiting for your reply, i download the cm 6 that is a stable version and checked, it has the same problem too.. i also downloaded GingerVillain 1.6 and it had the same problem too. do u think the problem might be that my phone is "s-on"? and how should i know if my phone is s-on or s-off... when i was rooting my phone with unrevoked, i checked the option that says disable security, but i'm not sure if it's disabled.... because i can't install un-signed zip packages....
any reply?
That definitely sounds odd. Its definitely not an issue with S-ON/OFF, nothing you've done here requires S-OFF to work properly.
Lets just make sure you're following all the steps.
In amonra, you've done your nandroid backup, so no need to do it again. There's no point having a non working backup
Go to wipe and wipe data/factory reset
Wipe davlik cache
Wipe sd-ext (shouldn't need to do this one as you don't have apps2sd yet, but better to be safe)
Now you flash your update.zip, then reboot and you should be fine. The only other thing I can perhaps suggest if every rom you flash sticks at boot is to perhaps try clockwork recovery instead of amonra. Apart from that we might have to wait for folks more knowledgeable than myself cause I'm all out of ideas.
thx for reply.... in meanwhile , i s-off ed my phone and it has the same problem too... i have problem with all cm and gingervillain roms.. but i don't have any problem with leedriod... one more question that maybe the problem is that i have android 2.2 installed, but gingervillain and cm use android 2.3 ... this maybe the problem.... and that's why leedroid works right, because it uses android 2.2.... i'm going to check OxyGen roms... i will post the result here...
i also faced same problem CM7 .. i tried CM6 and it went on fine..
heyyy... right after i posted the reply , i went to recovery and wiped anything, then installed gingervillain 1.6, and everything's fine now... it booted up and now im setting it up.... im going to check the cm 7 too.
i tried cm7 rc2 ... and it was fine and now im using it... here's a how to for solving the problem...:
1.S-OFF your device with AlphaRev : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=805811
2.Install the AlphaRev Recovery(S-OFF Image will do it automatically).
3.Go to recovery and install the rom...
4.Boot up and it should not go to system and it should stay in loop as the problem was..
5.Now you should reboot your device into recovery... there are two ways to do this... either take the battery off and put it on, then boot to bootloader by pressing the volume down and the power key and select recovery , or the second way connect it to your computer and start adb and run this command:
adb reboot recovery
6.In AlphaRev recovery first wipe the cache partition , wipe user data, and factory reset...
7.then install the rom (either cm7 or gingervillain)...
8. boot up , and now you have the system running...
This solved my problem... reply if it didn't yours...
hooo.. it worked for me now. just kept update.zip in a new SD card and not flashed google apps..
im very happy that i solved one's problem.. ... thread marked as solved...
*UPDATE* : now i realized that we can mark it as solved.. !!! hehe.. Admin do it for us...

help im stuck on htc evo screen logo and i cant restore

i was on Calkulin's_EViO_2_ROM_v1.8 and i rebooted to recovery to restore back to cm7 rc4 but it gives me error error while flashing image. so i try to wipe and reinstall another rom and works but it still stuck in htc logo.
Are you performing a full wipe, factory/data, cache, and dalvik?
yes i performing full wipe and everything im uisng clockworkmod recovery 3.0.0.5. did those and install a rom but still stuck in logo screen and i cant restore i made few backup and none them work!?
Have you tried going into the bootloader, select clear storage [factory reset], then flash the rom? Also are you flashing a kernel?
im just flashing regular rom on using clockworkmod. ived done this flashing roms many times and never happen like this before.
Well at this point, it seems like your old backup may be corrupted. Make a new backup, and then try to restore it.
how i do backup when i already delet wipe already so i jsut need to install another rom and do backup and restore it?

Correct, make a backup of your current, flash a new rom, then try and restore.
ok i install Calkulin's_EViO_2_ROM_v1.8 agian backup and try restore but it gives me boot image error same thing.
i had a similar issue. my phone wouldnt even boot past the splash screen but i was able to correct that by flashing the stock evo ruu in hboot from my sd card then reflashing a custom rom over that. im not sure if you have to re-root but in my case i had to run unrevoked again. i had to reflash at least 4 times before my issue resolved but havent had any issues since
can you show me the steps and what i need?
1. Go into recovery, select backup, backup current rom
2. Wipe factory/data, cache, dalvik cache under advanced
3. Flash a new rom, let it boot up, go back to recovery, backup that rom
4. Restore previous backup just made
You can install the official RUU upddate from sprint then download the newest HTC SYNC to your computer then plug in the phone thru the usb and run the RUU file as if you are running an app. Remember this will delete everything includidn your root but you can easily re-root with unrevoked. Hope that helps? I had that problem on my incredible and I did this and it fixed it.

to unroot do i need 2.2 version to unroot?
If you're on hboot 2.10, you'll need a 3.70 ruu.
im sorry please show me how to unroot my phone since i cant boot up im on bootloader.
Use Sprint Lovers ROM the PC36IMG.zip version put on root of sdcard go into bootloader, update, reboot there you go. No re-root needed. I ALWAYS keep this on my sdcard root just in case. Trust me it saved my EVO more than once. You will lose everything but better lost info than lost phone. Try RA Recovery...better than any IMHO

[Q] Gotta be an easier way

I just managed to nearly brick my buddy's Droid X, and I just wanted to see if there was an easier way to do what I had to go through.
Going from Liberty 2.0 to DarkSlide, did a nandroid backup, wiped data, cache, dalvik, the usual... But, darkslide didn't install right for some reason, and it hung on the bootlogo. After waiting 15 minutes, I finally pulled the battery, expecting Clockwork to come up, and I could restore. Instead, I had the normal recovery, with the four options to wipe data, wipe cache, install update.zip, or reboot.
Now, besides the point that I just had to sieve through several update.zip's, including a bad md5 sum or two, running RSD Lite and loading a stock Rom and re-rooting. This was my first time ever going through all this crazy process... I'm just wondering:
If a ROM goes wrong in installing, is there a way to avoid all the insanity I just went through, or am I running the risk of going through all that every time I flash a new ROM?
Haha same here. I almost bricked my phone but o was able to restore it with the original RUU to downgrade and reset to factory settings. By doing that I just had a spare sd card to format and re-rooted. Once that was done ROM Manager did the rest with restoring my last backed up working ROM on my original sd card.
Its hard to come by one click rooting tools.

How would I go about that?
hmm If you would flash Clockwork into recovery section of you phone and not using Rom Manager to boot into update.zip (ClockWork), you woudln't have such problems
Everytime I do a update and it fails it still boots into the Bootloader and my beloved ClockWork Mod v3 with the ability to flash another CustomRom with works.

[Q] boot loop on reboot

Hey guys,
Got a very weird problem here. I have previously flashed a CM10 nightly to my One X (international) and everything has been fine for around 3 weeks. Decided i wanted to try our the ViperX ROM. Previously upon flashing this ROM it just bootlooped but after another try with a slightly different method, i managed to get it to boot and all was merry. After titanium restore i rebooted, and this once again put me into a bootloop. Cannot get the ROM to boot. Why is this!!! Switched back to CM10. :good:
You need to do
fastboot flash boot boot.img

Still doesnt boot man, im sure i flashed the boot image properly. This is the rundown of my flash process:
1: install from sd
2: in recovery, factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvic cache
3: Boot into fastboot and flash the boot.img
4: Reboot.
So it booted but into viper X, but after restoring with Titanium i was unable to get it to boot again.
I also tried "fastboot erase cache" to no avail
In fastboot type fastboot erase cache

Where does it stop booting, what is on the screen?
With tb, make sure you restore user apps only, none of the system apps.

Sorry forgot to mention I also used the "fast book erase cache" command.
As for titanium I restored all user apps and data and now that you mention it that could be the problem. I'll have another crack tomorrow and let you know.
Main reason I want to switch is I need much better battery life than CM10 but only temporarily. Can anyone recommend viperx as being a significant improvement?

It comes up with "HTC" vibrates then the viper crawls across the screen and it stops at the "htcONE" logo.
Restored apps and app data and guess what. Still doesn't boot. WHY! Going to just try apps, no data at ALL. Will report back.
I dunno why it won't start, double check you have the right boot.img (download it again and flash it again), in recovery erase cache and dalvik cache.
same issue
Hi i am also getting the same problem, i used the viper rom and others but it goes past the HTC logo looks as though it works but the lock ring is froze up and then it reboots itself over and over doing the same thing each time. Ive tried One_X_All-In-One_Kit_v1.2 and the manual CMD fastboot tutorial i dont know what to do to fix this, can anyone help me please?
EDIT* I seem to have it working now (fingers crossed), i used 'Nocturnal_Special_Edition_4.0_Odex' so thx to their good work that i now have a working rom for my phone phew
EDIT 20 MIN LAter* OK looks like i did something i shouldnt, it seemed to work, i made a change in the settings and then it rebooted and continued to reboot over and over so i tried installing a rom again and now it just stays at the htc quietly brilliant screen, what have i done this phone is now not so brilliant as its looking more and more that ive goosed it Any help apreciated.
boot.img
Help please
Hello,
I have 1x (CID 203) unlocked and rooted with cwm recovery. I had Cyanogenmod 10 nighly on it, well in hope of no bugs like in CM10 I flashed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1763240 to it. Well it seemed to work a moment but then the device started rebooting randomly. I couldn't boot to recovery (strange?), the recovery screen flashed less than a second and the phone started to boot normally again. After a few tries (and reflashing recovery) I luckily got into the recovery. Tried to restore a nandroid backup which I made earlier yesterday. CWM said that the restore was successful but the device didnt boot anymore. Only shows htc logo and cyanogenmod loading screen. But nothing happens. Well, then I flashed Android Revolution HD 10.3. (with wiping the system data and so on) but it wont load any longer than the htc one logo screen. Rom installed fine and I flashed the boot.img.
Now I'm able to get into recovery and fastboot and charge my phone but how could I safely and surely return my phone to stock or make the ARHD work without completely bricking it? I'm thinking that relocking my device is not very safe if the RUU fails to install. What do you think? Can the firmware updates cause this problem to happen? Can I flash ARHD 9.7.2 to my device? Too bad I can't ask these questions in the ARHD thread....
In bootloader my phone says
Code:
hboot-0.94.0000
radio 1.1204.104.14
Any advice is highly appreciated, I'm not ready to bury my phone yet
Edit. ARHD 9.7.2 flashed correctly. Any ideas why the ARHD 10.3 keeps bootlooping? Yes, I have flashed the correct boot.imgs.

If I restore apps only it does boot however any sort of data and it refuses to. Very annoying as I am not able to retain texts accounts etc. I have a feeling it's because I originally backed up on a jellybean ROM and the data just doesn't want to work on ics

Try the fast boot erase cache command and see if that solves the boot issue. If not make sure in recovery your have cleared cache partition performed a factory reset and also cleared the dalvik cache. Again if none of these work try re flashing the boot.img or perhaps try another rom that is known to be stable.

[Q] My phone will not boot up/cannot Access Recovery Mode. ( Samsung Galaxy S3)

Hi guys,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 I747m, running Cyanogen Mod and as of right now, it will not turn on. It will begin the boot animation and the freeze once it reaches the end. I cannot access Recovery Mode but I can access Download Mode. This all began when my version of gapps started glitching, or at least Google play Store. I downloaded a new gapps and tried to install it without wiping out the dalvik cache or uninstalling the old gapps. Yes I am a noob at this and an idiot.
Please guys if anyone of you has the patience to tell me what I need to do to get my phone operational again. please do so. My family is not doing well financially right now and can't afford another phone. Please give me some hope. Please.
Well.....I'm not expert but I can tell you its not hard bricked. So you're safe for now. I suggest checking out how to flash another OS using download mode. I believe it involves using your sd card as a "bootable media". (Like, usb stick for windows 7)
Do some research about that. And I think it should work.
Try this!

I would try and flash a new recovery image either twrp or cwm through download mode using Odin and try getting back into recovery and clean flash cyanogenmod and gapps all over again. Basically start from scratch and see if it fixes the problem, if you can get in to recovery mode after flashing a new image you may only need to wipe cache/dalvik to fix it but I'd start with trying your best to get a recovery image reflashed and the ability to get into recovery mode. You can find the images for recovery at the official sites either twrp or clockwork recovery and the instructions on how to flash them anywhere by searching through Google! Hope this helps you
From download mode you can flash a stock firmware with Odin unless you have installed the stock 4.3 update. This will wipe your phone but you will have it booting and recovery back.

Thank you so much! However, in the Clockwork Mod website, it does not say anything about downloading Clockwork Recovery. What should I do from this point? Also, some people suggest installing an entirely new OS. Would this be a better or worse solution compared to flashing Clockwork Mod Recovery?
Thank you once again!

As for your previous post, the Clockwork downloads are under the 'Rom Manager' tab here: http://www.clockworkmod.com/.
Twrp recovery here: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2 (Hit 'Get TWRP for your device' then this link at bottom of page 'Download - Odin Flashable Tar:').
Which you chose depends on which you had before the issue and whether you want to restore a previous backup once recovery is restored. If you are not going to be restoring a back up, I'd recommend the TWRP file as it can be flashed with Odin.
Your other option is to Flash a stock firmware from Odin and start from scratch. This can be the more labor intensive way because you then need to setup the phone again and get it back to how you like it. The benefit of this method is that it wipes absolutely everything, including whatever problem had you screwed in the first place. Because I tinker with my phone a lot, I always have everything important stored on an external SD. Pictures, Titanium Backup, Nandroid, etc. If you have backups of everything you need off the phone, I'd recommend that you Odin it. If you do not have things backed up try installing recovery first and getting the phone to boot. In the end if you do chose this method you should still wipe as there was obviously something that really buggered your phone and a wipe will be the best way to fix that so it doesn't recur. That's my opinion anyway.
Update!
Apparently I can access Recovery Mode now!! However, it still does not boot up. I backed up all my filed to my external 8GB SD card, and then wiped the dalvik Cache. Nothing. I did a full Factory reset and still nothing. AM I missing a step? Is there a step I should take before or after clicking full wipe? The phone boots all the way to cyanogen mod logo, where an arrow spins around it. However, that's all it does.
Any ideas?

So you can access recovery mode?
*Before you follow the next steps, understand everything will be deleted from your PHONE, NOT sdcard.*
You have to wipe everything clean. That means(in recovery mode):
Wipe Data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Wipe dalvik cache
Then you would install your rom. From there everything should work. Also, are you installing CM10.2? 10.1? 11? (I personally suggest 10.2.)
