Hi,
I bought an unlocked unbranded (unrooted) HTC Desire 2.1 and did the Froyo update with unrooted 2.2 ROM (OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2 ...).
Everything (almost) works fine, yet I'm annoyed by not being able to use apps for rooted devices like Titanium Backup or Move2SD Enabler, I always have to use the cable for adb shell.
So the question is how to root my device with Froyo?
My current config:
Software number: 2.09.405.8
HBOOT-0.92.0001
RADIO-5.09.00.20
Thanks a lot.
You can root using unrevoked 3.2. It's still in a testing phase at the moment but it worked perfectly for my Desire. In order to get it you have to join their irc channel.
Also works with 0.93 BootL. and 2.10 ROM?
Thanks.
Yep, works fine
Thanks.
Can someone pls tell me what unrevoked 3.2 will do?
What is the process I should follow (being already in 2.2 but unrooted)?
Once it's out full instructions are included but in a nutshell you run the file and connect your Desire and thats about it
Just tried that, but something is not working as supposed. I just downloaded and launched the reflash app (on a linux box) but after a reboot (bootloader menu was shown) unrevoke fails complaining about not able to complete.
I have an unbranded Desire with software 2.09.405.8 and hboot 0.92.
Any clue? Tried googling but no luck.
Bye
Will
You should also install drivers for it... and make sure that you set you phone to debug mode. For the drivers there should be a link in the same folder.
I purchased my Desire back in June and as soon as i found out about rooting
i used the one click unrevoked 3 method. Due to it being unbranded i didnt need a gold card i simply did so. After which i had problems installing some roms and its become too difficult so ive decided to unroot it and use it as it was meant to be until i gain more knowledge.
My problem is no matter which RUU i use following the unlocker method nothing works. I continue to get the error that none of the RUUs are suitable for my phone.
I have looked through the other posts but couldnt find an answer that worked for me.
my radio is 32.44.00.32u_5.09.05.30_2
Im running AuraxTSense 7.6.1 Froyo FRF91 by NeoPhyTe
Can anyone help me?

Hi,
Is your Hboot 0.93 ?
try this RUU : http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed.exe
Enter bootloader (vol.dw+power), then plug the phone to USB and run the RUU it should work...
Have u installed HTC Sync again after using unrevoked?
U need the htc drivers installed
Have u tried LeeDroid?
Running stable and fast in my Desire, I rooted nd unrooted the phone twice, but every time i go back to unroot status i get bored, so root again, i think u should try another ROM first before unroot, try mine : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768703
Download de ROM,
Install thru ROM Manager or directly thru Recovery, but remember to Wipe data before u install make a clean install, if u still experience any issues go back to Stock...
My Hboot is 0.93.0001
Ill try the RUU tomorrow when i have enough time at my disposal
Although ill try leedroid first just in case. Hopefully it works and is good enough
thanks for the help
Just curious, but did it work?

You need to enter FASTBOOT (back + power) to run an RUU outside of Android
Hello there xda-devs!!
I own an htc desire A8181 (amoled i think) and i fell into the temptation to root it. The problem is that i updated OTA into 2.2 froyo and my hboot now is 0.93.00001 on which the unrevoked method wont work (at leat for me it did not, as it showed : "validation error: backup cid is missing" ). I have installed the modified drivers and my desire is unbranded. I was hoping to find a method to root without losing any data or settings and since everyone showed as an alternative hboot downgrade and custom rom, so i thought " what if i downgraded hboot but i did not flash a new rom ", but the question is "is it possible?"
As you may have figured out, i dont know much about rooting/flashing etc, although i have some experience from flashing kaiser and some others, but i am willing to learn. If anyone could give me a hint/link/suggestion or solution to my problem it would be gratefully appreciated
PS thank you in advance and sorry for my english

AFAIK, the latest unrevoked works fine with the 0.93.00001 - quite sure I read this in one of the threads.

Thanks for the quick response! Actually these posts were the first that i read when i first thought of rooting and i believe that i have correctly followed the steps of the how to for the unrevoked (version 3.22 straight from the unrevoked site) and i tried twice on different computers(both running win xp home x86). As for the alternatives on benko's tut, none of them supports OTA 2.2 froyo...
After thought and some reading, I decided that I will downgrade to 2.1, root using unrevoked and then flash to prerooted froyo. Actually, since the point is not to lose settings or data, does anyone know a safe way to back up everything and restore them to the new rom?
I have the same model as you mate and the latest unrevoked worked for me, I downloaded the one straight from their website.

Had you also updated OTA with froyo? If yes then why doesn't it work for me? I am sure that the phone is unbranded. Maybe it's something else and not hboot? My current specs are:
*Hboot:: 0.93.001
*Radio: 5.11.05.27
*Rom: 9.29.405.2 (got the update a week ago)
The only thing that I did not follow in the unrevoked guide, was that I didn't select hboot while loading the drivers, because I could not, no matter how many times I pressed the volume down button.I just waited for it to change to usb plug. Could that be the problem?

Something else I noticed the first time I tried with unrevoked, was that in the revoked window it showed "triumph" for a moment and then it rebooted for the last time and then it showed "validation error..". Strange is that it never showed it again not even on the 2nd or 3rd try...What could that mean?

Thanks for the tip, but this is about BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-ON while my desire is PVT1 SHIP S-OFF and it says that these are able to root but not flash a Rom, while I can't even root.. and the errors do not match..
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
If you're S-OFF now then you don't need to root - if anything you might be already!
As you hadn't said anything about the rest of the HBOOT I thought I'd mention it but I'm on 0.93 and can root with no issues
And what does it mean? I am already root and I don't know it? And why does then the unrevoked method not work and where is the superuser app?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
If the Superuser app isn't there then you're not rooted, so that clears that up...
Go read the S-OFF thread in Development and post a query on there. It sounds like you may have a facotry unlocked bootloader which is extremely rare but best go and confirm it in the forum
Ok. I'm going now. Thank you Eddy and the others for your great help
*forgot to mention: the s off I wrote was after the failed tries with unrevoked(before I hadn't noticed if it was on or off) also the phone was destined to be a demo in a store*

try installing the HTC sync drivers and then remove HTC sync and try again.
If possible switch to Ubuntu and root, its much better.
I have already installed the HTC sync drivers and removed the HTC sync, but I will try reinstalling..You think that through Linux it might succeed?

[edit]: tried again in windows removing reinstalling etc. and in slax live cd. Still no luck as the "validation error: backup cid is mising" wont stop appearing
[Second edit] I'm root now. Followed turkeys' tut
Hi I recently tried using unrevoked 3.22 and it really didnt seem to work as I got a "validation error: backup cid is mising". However after a reboot I found myself in clockworkmod recovery, so that part seemed to work. However straight afterwards I tried to start the phone, I discovered had no access to SD card and any attempt to access phone via USB also gone, it seems Bluetooth is also gone. However I got the SD card back again using FASTBOOT, has anyone got any ideas how I could possibly get USB back?
Hello cletus. I may not know the solution to your problem, but usually posting some further info about your device(HBOOT, radio etc) and the exact steps you made before that problem, might help someone that would like to help
I really hope that you find a solution to your problem

I installed HBoot drivers, didn't installed HTCSync, checked debugging usb on, set the phone on "charge only" and have +20mb of free space on rom.
My phone in reconnized as "ABD" in device manager.

I have tried on 3 pc (one on xp, one on 7 and mine ) but no results
Try unrevoked 3.21 and also HTC Sync is needed for the drivers, but after installing, you should uninstall it.
Omg thank-you , i'll try this tomorrow !!!
It works (in usb2 no but on usb3 yes : why?) I flashed a gingerbread rom (oxygen) and it works perfectly !!!
Similar problem
I have a similar issue.
I have the Hboot driver installed, running Win7 Pro 64-bit (also tried on win xp), disabled anti-virus, installed HTC sync and removed it (this didn't work), installed HTC sync and cancelled the installation after the drivers etc were installed and before HTC Sync proper was installed (this didn't work either).
The phone was rooted and went in for a screen replacement to my non-network warranty repair (bank insurance) and they sent it back restored to factory and what appears to be OTA updated.
In Hboot I have the following displayed:
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.93.0001
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.11.05.27

I always just end up with "Waiting for device" in unrevoked 3.32. Any suggestions or what am I doing wrong? I have read thru quite a few similar posts and tried just about every combination of suggestions I could ind to no joy. I have to be doing something simple wrong, but for the life of me I can't figure out what.
after installing htc sync and connecting your phone to your pc, doesnt it acknowledge you phone is connected?
Unrevoked never worked for me, I tried everything to the point of going crazy. So I used alpharevx and now I'm running custom 2.3.3 ROM with sense 2.1. Very easy, and fast. It gives you S-off too.
The way I read it, I was to install the app and drivers, then immediately uninstall the app. I have never actually synced my phone to my pc. Although when I reboot the phone into hboot the pc device manager recognises the phone as an android device.
Am I supposed to install htc sync, sync the phone and THEN uninstall it?
Yes, but only the software, you need the drivers for unrevoked.
Sent from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
Also try an earlier version of unrevoked like 3.2x instead of 3.32

Ok, it must have been Win7(64-bit). I tried it on the wife's Vista laptop and it worked. So now running Cyanogenmod7.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
Good stuff.. enjoy

Win 7 x64 works fine for me. In my case the problem was solved by installing HTC Sync, and de-installing (leave the drivers).
Instead of rooting through unrevoked (if you can't), S-OFF your phone using alpharev, fastboot flash recovery and then backup your original ROM, and install the ROM you want.
Good luck.
Hi all,
I'm trying to root a HTC Desire, but having no succes with Unrevoked nor Revolutionary.
This phone has the following configuration:
HBOOT 0.93.0001
Radio 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Stock HTC ROM, version 2.29.405.5
Phone is plugged in as USB drive and with USB debugging enabled. I'm running Unrevoked and Revolutionary on Linux.
Unrevoked
Using Unrevoked 3.32, the process hangs on "Pushing Flasher...". Nothing happens for a long time, application has to be terminated. (When the phone is unplugged, Unrevoked will say "Failed pushing flasher".)
Update: also tried with Unrevoked 3.21 (some forum posts/blogs suggest this version for HTC Desire), but has the same effect.
Revolutionary
When the above turned out not to work after trying several times, I decided to try Revolutionary after reading some posts about it on this forum. I'm using version 0.4pre4. Revolutionary starts doing its work, then tries to reboot the device, but the phone doesn't go past the FASTBOOT screen (showing options BOOTLOADER, REBOOT, REBOOT BOOTLOADER and POWER DOWN). The phone's hardware buttons are locked. After the second try (see below), the buttons are operational, but Revolutionary reports "failed".

The strange thing is that I have rooted another HTC Desire phone with the exact same specifications some time ago using the exact same copy of Unrevoked3 with no problems.
Does anyone have an idea what is going wrong and what I can do to solve it?
Thanks!

with revolutionary did you install the fastboot drivers? read the documentation on the page and there is a link to them. Install the drivers and try again. Then all you gotta do is flash a custom recovery and you can flash away roms. just remember to backup.
Thanks for the message. I'm running the tool on Linux and understand from the documentation that it's self-contained on Linux and no additional drivers are needed. Right? As far as I know I've used both tools correctly.
Any other suggestions on either Unrevoked or Revolutionary are very welcome!
Try a clean sdcard which has only a fat 32 partition and use a stock ROM with no a2sd or Data2sd. Try revolutionary once again with this. Revolutionary does need drivers on windows..in fact their site hosts the driver. Of course Linux doesn't need it..if it fails, try another sdcard with only a fat 32 partition
