[Q] 2.3 firmware?? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

when will the 2.3 firmware be relleased??? like the froyo 2.2 w.e w.e?

Don't expect 2.3 for a while. It would probably be smart to not expect Samsung and Sprint to ever release 2.3 for the Epic. It will probably have to be a community thing, but right now the community is waiting for official froyo. Once that is out, I'm sure more people will be thinking about working on a 2.3 port.

We all very much doubt that. HTC aren't exactly the most punctual or timely in their updates.
Shame really, they make great phones but just set them aside and forget about them after two months.
I hop that we will get it thanks
My bet is September/October 2010 or never.

Fate of HERO is the worst nightmare we can imagine.
HTC has just recently launch a software upgrade to 1.21.405.2.
I highly doubt there will be another update to Froyo 2.2 in 3 weeks time. (23rd June according to the rumour)
Once the source for Froyo is out, there will surely be a better port of Froyo for the HTC Desire.
sad
sad that htc is the only one who can port fm radio to desire, i dont think this community will be able to port fm radio to froyo, cause froyo dont support fm radio hardware.

Froyo ports for Desire are getting better each day.
Sense UI will be gone but with new features of Froyo it's acceptable loss.

I was thiking like you but since i have ADW Launcher I don't miss Sense.
Anyway. Had my HTC Touch 3g (magic) on April 2009 with 1.5 and we had our 1.6 update on ¿Septembre? So I think that we will have to wiull till September or MAybe October to enjoy our officil froyo update. The 23th of June thing may be a joke or something. I'm quite sure that we won't have 2.2 before Nexus and we don't even know when, froyo in nexus, are gonna be officiallly launched.
I'm sorry, my English sucks.
I think when Flash 10.1 finally comes out of beta, we can expect the first Froyo updates to surface.
It's a key part of the new OS, I don't think the beta version could be part of the final shipped rom..

Flash is not part of FroYo.
This is how Google are planning to defragment Android. All that FroYo contains is support for Flash 10.1, it does not matter if Flash is still in Beta as technically it's only just a plugin for the OS as it is for Windows/Mac/Linux.
I am waiting Froyo Official HTC update too...

no need to be negative. keep opinions like that to yourself.
Engadget just released HTC's forthcoming plans for Froyo updates, and Froyo will not be appearing on the desire, due to non compatible hardware relating to the wifi. HTC have said if you want FroyO, burn your phone and prey, then it will reappear, magicly with Froyo, and a ice cream
Mods do the honours please and kill this thread. Or move it to the general, where it should have been posted in the first place

Oh yeah sorry you're right, this issue isn't discussed anywhere already
People should learn to use the search function. I haven't been on this particular forum for very long but it seems quite a lot of people just barge in here without paying ANY attention to how a forum should be used (in everyone's interest)

Froyo

Why can't we have Froyo yet already???? What's the hold up? By the time, we get it... 3.0 will be around the corner...
Yours doesn't have it?
Yep. I have it
Sent from my Evo on on the Now network from Sprint
oh and duck Apple
I'm not talking about hacked custom roms.. I'm talking about offical release from HTC. I want Froyo that is fully function including 4g
you are lucky you didnt own a Hero then. It was outdated they day i got it(two days before launch). it came with 1.5 i believe, 1.6 was already out and 2.0 was announced a few weeks later w/ the DROID. THEN 2.1 one came out and Hero owners were STILL waiting. finally 2.2 was announced and a week or so later they pushed 2.1 to Sprint Heros.
long story short, dont expect it to come out anytime soon with HTC's track record. i would recommend rooting and installing cm6, it runs great sans 4G

"without 4G"
HTC has announced 2.2 will roll out by December. If you want it that bad, i suggest trying out CyanogenMod. I never had 4G coverage around me, but after playing around with it, i would never go back to a Sense-based 2.1 ROM.

Cyanogen's mod, while amazingly awesome, has problems. There are missing features, inconsistencies between what works and what doesnt from user to user, and it's AOSP.
HTC has to make EVERYTHING work for EVERYONE all the while porting over their sense UI. All of their apps and widgets need to work on Froyo. It needs to be stable. This sort of thing realistically can take months to perfect. So don't be butthurt when you don't get it til Christmas.
I personally can't stand Sense... or any other UI put on top of android. But as long as I can root and boot up custom roms, I'm a happy camper.
uhh isn't google suppose to be the one releasing froyo since they are the makers of android os not htc? i thought htc was just the hardware
google only releases it for nexus one
they then release froyo source then hardware makers like htc and motorola use the source along to build their versions with either sense or blur
Now I can see how so many people are confused.
This isn't a simple phone, it is complex and there are many hands in the cookie jar. Please do some research about your phone, and who makes what, and you will realize it is far more complicated than "Froyo is out, how come my phone doesn't have it."
I'm very happy with the Froyo I already have. I see 4G as a totally useless feature due to its extreme battery drainage.

Then thinking you can come into a development forum and post a question that should be common knowledge to anyone tinkering at all in Android is just lazy.
If you switch phones every two months, then what do you care about Froyo, or even learning what your phone can do anyway...
When I make a purchase, I find out what I am buying, if it suits my needs, what limitations it has, what support it has etc. I call that making an "informed" decision.
I don't just walk into the story and buy the pretty one without knowing the above. Or else I would have an iPhone and wouldn't care about what I can do with it.
This was a lazy question posted by someone that hasn't done any reading about their phone or they would see what has to be done to get an Official Froyo build.
basically,
Froyo (aka: Android 2.2) has been released by it's maker. it's maker is Google. HTC gets licensing to install the OS on it's phones. now, when HTC first started working with Android...android was..well...it was lacking...it was lacking a fair bit. so the HTC devs put some 'Sense' onto android to make it something that the nerds can bring to their corporate executives. (cause if we nerds can't sell the boss on how cool this is...then i don't get to play it.) meanwhile, Google is trying to turn Android into a serious market contender. and its going up against some very mature code. this has a side effect of causing Google to release v1.5, v1.6, v2.1 and v2.2 rather close to each other. this is not a sustainable pace of release...it will piss everyone off. thankfully Froyo supposedly will be able to bridge us over until v3.0. at which point google has said they will proceed with a much slower version relase of Android.
Sense is not needed like it used to be. however, it'll prolly be around for a while. htc has said they will release froyo onto the evo but that is not a priority for them...the evo is yesterdays product so its more important getting the upcoming devices ready for market. perhaps the HTC/Sprint sanctioned Android 2.2 will be released by the end of the 4th quarter (or so they say).
on the good note...CM6 is rather nice. even without having 4G running yet. but really, how often do need to turn on the 4G radio? and they will get it working before long.
i must also agree w/ Bielinsk on this one....

Check out Avalaunchmods Froyo ROM with Sense. He released an RC for it today and hopes to have a couple of little issues fixed tonight. He has a Sense and no-Sense ROM available. He's put a lot of work into them and i'll be checking out the Sense ROM for sure tonight. Probably bounce back and forth between the CM6 that i'm using now and Ava's Sense ROM.

maybe because all the phones i buy are android os...and you really have way too much time on you're hand to flame someone over such a little thing...all i asked was "isn't froyo suppose to be released by google and not htc" if you don't wana answer it then leave it alone...noone wants to hear your history crap...Noone wants to know how you read every nutrient fact before buying milk or read every little thing that's on the charging adapter...maybe you have time all the time in the world to do that and all the power to you but not everyone is like...we actually have a life and don't learn the history of every little thing we purchase...and fyi forums are made to ask questions and to inform each other...so if you don't like someones question instead of flaming simply don't read it and move on.

Gingerbread OTA update appears to be beginning / ROM Dump?

It looks as if the OTA update for Sense 2.3 has started to come through. I'm in the process of asking the one who got it to dump the ROM.
It's not Gingerbread, it's the 2.29.xxx.x version that started to roll out yesterday for many users.

Oh Sorry my BAD well I am waiting for CM Team and AdamG that soon gingerbread AOSP Rom will be in our hand.
AdamG promises that he's waiting for gingerbread as soon as it's out he's gonna update Oxygen 1.0 to Gingerbread platform for us that's why he kept it so much minimal.
Similarly CM team we know their abilities and Cyanogen and Kali they are truly the most brilliant ones and blessed one. I know soon very soon we will be enjoying gingerbread on our desire as Nexus one will get it very 1st and our Desire is closest brother to Nexus One
Gingerbread on the Desire, in same day as Nexus????

Stop being so smug and just read the damn link.
Very unlikely that it is gingerbread.
Oke this is getting sad, he admits his update is 28mb. There is no way that gingerbread is so small, second, like mentioned before in this thread, there is a HTC update 2.29.405.2 which happened to roll out around this time and is also 28mb, third the desire is a sense phone and it would be extremely unusual for HTC to release a senseless update for it.
It was fun while it lasted, but it will be a while before we see gingerbread on the desire officially.

What do you see?

Do you think there will be a Android2.3 Rom for Defy?

ROM 2.2 works well, but do you think there will be a Android2.3 Rom for Defy? I like flashing new roms
with bootloader locked?
Simply and definitly NO...
With a unlocked bootloader, maybe
If you're talking about an official update it is hard to say...
As you can see, although there are already a few 2.3 phones around, Motorola still delays Defy 2.2 for most of the world.
So... Personally I don't think they're doing this because they wanna jump to 2.3 directly, but because they're concentrating on other things (like Atrix).
So I would rather expect an unofficial 2.3.
Cheers!

yeah maybe you are right, official update is hopeless.
Yeah very stupid for moto to tight things up. Just let advanced users playing around, and novice users bricking their phones. They won't get bad rep and would most likely get some extra sales.
Well we could use Froyo Kernel for Gingerbread, Gingbread to Froyo ist not that difference!

Hey you are chinese, then why dont you follow that thread on porting 2.3 on defy at goapk forum and let us know what is happening at the development?
a true one? probably not unless moto unlocks the bootloader, or it releases one itself (maybe, maybe not, moto ahs a bad reputation on tihs).
the current 2.2 roms are rocking 2.6.32 kernels and official 2.3 should be rocking 2.6.35 kernels.
that being said, one can run a hackish 2.3 rom with 2.6.32 kernels, i *think* it can be done but then it won't be truly 2.3
I don't think they will release official 2.3ROM because they didn't released a final 2.2. I hope, that Moto will officially unlocks the Bootloader to give us more possibilities...
I really hope that there will be a Gingerbread ROM some time in the future, preferably with the bootloader unlocked rather than the hacks for which I cannot prise the authors enough.
However, the Defy is still a great phone, also with 'just' 2.2 and that is what counts most to me. Who knows what kind of phone € 300 buys you in a year from now

Not yet
2.2 upgrade was allways announced for Q2 2011, so they're in the planning.
After that, who knows. They may offer 2.3 after 6 month or more (when 2.4 is release on they high-end phone) But I really don't expect for that today.
For me the Defy will stay on 2.2 for Motorola. The only hope it an unlocked bootlooader (officially or not)
Same here, Defy is a 2.2 device, period. A bootloader unlock would let us use 2.3 or higher but I doubt Motorola will spend more money on a new official update. Let's hope they will actually release a 2.2 ROM in a few months (the South American market should get its froYo within a month according to their schedule).
Well after the editorial of chris ziegler of engadget about motoblur they better off kill motoblur.

Lazy journalism, pointing out the obvious.
The fact he once thought Blur was good says it all IMO.
Anyway, if Motorola haven't listened to feedback from their customers, why would one blogger's opinion sway them?

Sounds like a large pile of BS to me.
Froyo is Froyo, Motorola aren't going to roll out some superior version of it - in fact, with Blur, if anything it's an inferior version...
i really do believe that 2.2 froyo update will come .. but 2.3 gingerbread ? nah i dont think so ... motorola is not really known for it's updates ..but if it comes my defy will be very happy to grab it ...
Motorola has already announced a Froyo update soon and I cant wait for that. Moto's history with updates and the locked bootloader doesn't give us much to hope for, but let's keep our fingers crossed! It would be amazing though!
