I have to send my rooted phone back to VZW for warranty replacement. How do I undo the rooting process? I can't find instructions anywhere. What am I missing.

Follow part 2, if you don't want to push the PB31IMG file through adb just put it on the root of your SD card, same thing, just different ways of getting it on the card. This will take you back to STOCK 2.2 as it was from Verizon.

If in the future the EVO needs to go for service, could I just flash a stock ROM after a Nandroid backup and bring it in to Sprint.
I would even remove the backup and put it on my PC.
Obviously if they looked very hard, I guess they could see the root. But would not returning the phone to a stock ROM, solve most issues with Sprint?
Would I need to flash anything else but the ROM?
So, I freaked out when the phone wouldn't read my memory card and did a bunch of things I assume you're not supposed to do. In the menu, I tried wiping what I thought was the card, but ended up being something else on the phone. Now all I get is the HBOOT screen, from which I can't navigate to recovery.
How can I completely unroot my phone from here so I can send it in to Verizon?
look in the android development forum... there is a guide there to get back to 2.1 stock without root or 2.2 stock without root... I followed that before i sent my phone back into verizon
hi.im new so please go easy
anyway my question is what the difference between debranded and rooted.i had stock o2 desire and put new rom on it and made the goldcard thing but aint sure if im rooted or what??i cant seem to get the ota update and aint sure what rom to upgrade for the new ota update(if there is one)also my camera goes split screen sometimes(kinda purple and pink)with 2 images sometimes.any help would be greatly appreciated.thanks H
First how did you put a new rom on it? If you made the goldcard and ran a .exe file on your computer you are debranded Explanation to follow:
Debranding: as the word says, this is about removing a certain branding(could be orange or in you case o2 software stuff) In order to do this we flash a stock(non rooted) rom directly from HTC without all the branding. This is normally only possible on unbranded phones, as branded ones should only be able to run a rom from whatever carrier branded it. Here we use the goldcard in order to make the phone accept original software from HTC and not only from the carrier. So the only difference made is, that we get rid of all the carrier stuff and only have original HTC firmware.
Rooting: this is very different, and as the name suggests, this is something we do to gain root access(full system access without limits from the software) to the system. This is done by placing a su-binary in /system/bin and the superuser.apk in /system/app, because then we can grant su-access to apps using the binary.
The actual root process is the hard part, because on stock phones, we cant place those files, so we must use some sort of security hole. On desire we use a hole, which lets us replace the recovery, and then we can use a custom recovery to place the su-files and get root.
thanks morten
would you have info on an easy to do root option for a dummy
i cant get the new update as my phone crashes everytime i try to install it,
plus i would like to get the full benefits of my handset and get some cool themes and stuff.if i root it does it affect the downloading of apps and stuff??many thanks H
Use this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788044. I did it last night and it works perfectly.
However, I now have a question. My phone is successfully rooted and I would like to set it up so that all apps run off the SD. I know this can be done, I have seen reference to apps2SD but I canĀ“t work out what I need to do. Also, I presume I will lose everything on the SD at the moment?
I rooted my atrix about a month ago and I did an update that was sent to me by at&t a week or so. Before I did the update I installed all my third party applications and apps that require to phone to be rooted. I went to use one of my apps that worked before I did the update and it now says the phone is not rooted. I was wondering if the phone unrooted with the update? If so how do I root it again without having to flash it and what not again. I DO NOT want to have to customize my phone all over again.
Can anyone share any light on this for me?
If you did not use a method to retain root (ie, copy /system/bin/su to a 'safe' place like /osh/sbin, make sure it is still chmod 6755), you currently have no option but to "GingerBreak" (and potentially wipe your SD cards) or to flash back to 4.1.26, psneuter, hide root, and update again. All Motorola updates so far remove the suid bits in /system. If I were you I'd just backup my SD cards and download the GingerBreak .apk. There's plenty of information on these points in the Atrix forums. G'luck
This has not happened to me but was wondering if you can re-lock the phone and return it to stock if you have a broken usb port.
Lets assume everything else works, the phone is unlocked and rooted, running a custom rom, and CWR custom recovery is installed.
I assume we can use a terminal on the phone and wifi file explorer, right? This would have been easier with a removable SD card but we don't have that. A step by step may help a poor soul in the future.
You could download efs file explorer and map a network drive through WiFi and copy over the official stock zip file. This will do it all except relock the boot-loader. I did that on a Nexus S where the port was bad and I got it back to stock minus the boot-loader getting re-locked.
