Hi guys,
I have to say, compared to my HTC Hero and Modaco 3.2 rom, the battery life on the Desire seems pretty poor to say the least.
Do you have any tips? I know there are mixed views on task killers but whats the general consensus? Seems like every app that gets opened, seems to stay open forever or atleast open in the background on this thing. Is that good or bad?
Does the Gmail app which is push based I believe consume less battery than say the HTC Mail app used to sync about every half an hour?
Have you discovered any particular HTC apps that drain more battery than normal?
I've already disabled Facebook and Friendstream completely, use seperate apps for those.
It just feels like the battery eats away even when the phone is just sat there with the screen off, sure I have 3G on but Twicca is the only thing set to update every half an hour in the background and the Gmail app on push no doubt.
Any tips?
pretty sure if u slightly decrease the brightness of the screen and stop all data connections unless you want to run them will help the battery life
disable live wallpapers
disable auto updates
disable 3G (just for the sake of trying)
decrease the brightness or make it auto (dont put it to the max)
put plain black wallpaper as background (trust me it consumes 40% less than the colored wallpaper, again, do it just for the sake of trying)
try this for one day and see if you get anything different
I have the brightness set really low, don't use live wallpapers.
I would disable 3G but that kind of defeats the purpose of having twitter updates and stuff, one of the main features of the phone.
Just checked and Twicca is only set to update once an hour, this is really weird.

I saw somewhere that you can see what app is draining your battery life in the notification bar, just open the notifications bar and go to battery, and see if you find anything related there
I have the phone for 3 days and I'm still in the stage where I play with it all the time.
Day 1: fully charged at 1PM, used the phone pretty much non-stop till 10PM and finally plugged it in with 3% left;
Day 2: unplugged the phone at 8AM, had it in stand-by for couple hours, then used it non-stop for 2 hours, then 4 more hours of stand-by, then it 2 hours continous use. The rest was more or less stand-by. Plugged it in at 10PM with around 10% left.
Day3: used it quite a bit on and off during the day, still have 34% left.
I don't do any fancy power saving, though I don't like apps updating themselves, except for mail. However, I use WiFi when I can and I listen to podcasts whenever I walk/drive somewhere.
It's a bit too early to draw conclusions, but at this point I'd say that Desire's battery life is much better than G1's (I had 1600 mAh battery).
Of course it all depends on particular use case. Also, maybe the network is spotty in your area - that might drain a lot of battery.
Hi everyone,
I bought my new Desire two days ago, and im noticing a really fast battery drain.
I had a Hero before, and although it had a smaller battery, i would charge it every two days.
When i check tha battery usage, i can see big percentages in cell standby, phone idle and android system. (Its where the percentages should be really low imo..) Things like display, bluetooth etc that were supposed to drain more my phone's battery have much lower percentages..
Maybe all this comes from the snapdragon cpu??
I also have 3g off, always on mobile switched off and brigthness to a really low level (although i think amoled displays dont drain the battery that much)
My battery will last one day the MOST..
I know that the new battery has to be charged a few times before it has its full potential, but i think that somehow battery is getting drained..any tips???
Thanks,
T.
I to have this same issue if anyone has any ideas on this would be great

You just need to relax
My Desire couldn't get through even one day of usage when I first got it. Several things contributed to this:
1. The battery is not fully conditioned
2. The device is new so I want to play with it all the time. I'd turn it on randomly for no reason whatsoever.
3. I use several widgets that requires updating just because of the novelty (ie, Friendstream, News, Twitter, Stocks, Weather)
Now, I go through about 60-70% charge per day which is fine by me. The only things that have changed is this:
1. The battery has gone though several recharge cycles
2. I only turn on my device when I really want to do something on it.
3. I no longer keep many of the widgets that requires updating and for those that I do keep, I make it update less often.
Eg, Updating your weather every hour is not necessary. Every 3 or 6 hours makes more sense.
Eg. Rather than having your Twitter or Friendstream widget on your homescreen, why not just have a shortcut that goes directly to the application and then set it to sync on launch? It's better than having your widget update when you're not even looking.
Also get an app like battery indicator to give you a numeric readout of your battery life left. My android battery indicator was in the red yesterday and complaining I had to recharge, but battery indicator said I had 12% left and I got 30mins more constant music playing out of it before I got to work and it was still on 5%.
when the battery is running low - you get a button to show battery usage stats.. can you get these through some of the widgets or a comparable app from the market?
almost every update is set to to once a day, or every six or eight hours...so i dont think that the updates drain the battery that much..
its just weird that the most battery usage comes from call standby, phone idle, or android system..
mine was the same, i found its due to sense & all the background updates. currently running helix2 homescreen & now I only go thru abt 50% battery each day & that includes 2 hrs of music each morning.

alright i know this seems stupid but remove all your task killers, i got rid of mine this morning and my battery has been fine normally by now i would have plugged my phone in for a juice up, but not today i had bluetooth on by accident all morning and by the end of the morning it was still at 70% yes i know it sounds stupid but it actually helps
There many interesting suggestions posted here and like most i've been absolutely hammering the battery on my handset simply because its a new and highly entertaining/useful device.
Here's some of my findings...
The battery/app usage screen can be quickly accessed by pressing the menu button on the home screen, selecting settings and "about phone". It helped me nail down some of apps causing excessive drain.
Much like the iphone and any other high powered smart phone, high screen brightness, wireless LAN, bluetooth, 3G and the GPS receiver all take its toll on the battery. One of the biggest drainers is the GPS receiver so use it sparingly, I initially had it on permanently for some of the maps functions but the battery was lasting about half a day! Sadly i've noticed the radio is also a bit of drainer, which is a shame because it makes a nice alternative to MP3 playback.
Data updates and notifications again much like the iPhone have a surprising impact on battery life so set them to manual or long intervals.
In summary, learn as quickly as possible to get the most out of your smart phone by balancing out the hardware and software options.
As a sidenote, I was previously an iPhone fan but this handset has really changed my opinion of how a smartphone should really be. The combination of excellent hardware, an OS thats clearly designed from the ground up for mobile use and an ever growing (open) software base, will in the long term win over Apple's over analy retentive ethos! Top marks also to HTC for their sense UI and application suite, it works on top of Android almost as if it was always part of the OS itself and I just love the integration of social networking features....leaves the iPhone in the dust!
I have noticed that Turning off the Data Connection helps a lot.
Last night I turned data off, before I plugged my phone in for charging. In the morning the battery was showing MAX power. Where normally in the morning would be 97%, because charging stops once the battery is full.
I am still experimenting with all the Apps & Widgets that turn data access ON/OFF, but my conclusions so far, just get a simple widget from the market, and keep data connection off, until you need it.
There is an app that turns data connection off once the screen goes off, but if you download something or wait for something to load and the screen goes off, data will also be switched off which is not what you need.
I let my phone discharge fully till it turned itself off!
Charged it for 4 or 5 hours.
Now I used it to make 3 short calls (5mins each) and send 10 or so texts, and surf for about 5 minutes, use google sjy mpas for 5minutes, showcase some video to some friends 2mins, general messing 10mins altogether.
Phone is up 40hours now (since charge) and still at 80%. I am very impressed.
I put it to airplane mode between 12am and 7am though as I don't like to be woken by drunk friends texts at 2am etc. (it happens sometimes).
I think those of us (me included) who slated the battery life originally didn't relaise we were using the phone non-stop pretty much for the entire day, trying out all the features on it. I doubt the first week of use will be "typical use" for ANY user
Happy Days
My battery on day one seems fine, 12.5 hours running so far, screen at 100%, everything on automatic syncing (and I mean everything, Weather, Twitter, FB, Gmail etc), continuous WiFi connection throughout, plenty of "first day" playing around and still sitting at something like 20%. With a few more charges and more typical use will last a day just fine, which is all I ask, since I always charge my phones overnight...
When i got my phone i let it run out as it had half power, i overcharged it a few hours then let it die, then i do the same again but not overcharge it and let it die. Now i charge it when i need to but i seem to be getting 3 days worth with usage out of it and i use gps, web and have things on auto. Seems to be much better than when i first had it as the battery didnt even last a day but now its past 2 days.
I assume with newer firmwares etc this will improve
My battery life seems to get worse. I charged it fully ... it has been on for 6 hours and I have put 3g on for a while (1hour max and i barely have used it) and my battery is already 60% ... is that poor?? This is my second phone as well!!!

I thought a full charge only required 3 hours..?
Anyone having surprisingly short battery life go into the phone keypad and dial in *#*#4636#*#*, when you key in that last * you will be taken to a testing menu (I've added a contact with this number and when in the dialer I can long press on the number as select edit number before calling to take me to this screen)
In this menu there are options to see phone and battery information as well as usage statistics for apps. The best battery option is "battery history" this shows you what apps are using your battery for various things such as network and processor usage. You can see this data for since you last rebooted your phone, unplugged it or for the whole life of the phone.
The first important part is "other usage", "running" shows you the percentage of the time your phone has been awake and doing stuff, "screen on" is the percentage of time your screen has been on, the difference between these two is when your phone has the screen is turned off but the phone is still working such as when syncing. Ideally you want these two percentages to be as close together as possible but it depends on how much syncing you have going on automatically in the background. If your running percentage is at or near 100% then an app is keeping your phone awake and using battery.
Next we have "partial awake use", this is what as been running in the background when you have the screen turned off and any apps that process or sync in the background would be listed here, the longer the bar, the bigger the drain on your battery. On my phone now the biggest bar by far is android system but it is still only small.
With "sensor usage" this is what has been using your sensors, games that use the sensors will feature heavily here.
"Gps usage" is again pretty self explanatory, whatever has been using gps.
"Network usage" was a real eye opener for me, I found out that an app was downloading megs of data all day and dwarfed all the other bars and was the reason for my bad battery life. Here the blue part of the bar is download and the red part is upload.
And lastly "cpu usage" on mine these are all practically non-existent but if anything is using massive amounts of processing it will show up here.
I only found out about this the other day but it has helped my battery life substantially, I used to take it off charge in the morning and be down to around 60% by lunch time, now I'm at 98%. I did this by uninstalling any apps that used too much battery and that I didn't really use very much as well as the vampire apps that were running and syncing continuously in the background, I also reduced the frequency at which some of my services such as stocks, email and weather synced, and used it on a low brightness when possible.
This is my first android device and I can now happily use it without the fear of running out of battery before the days end
Wow, thanks andybut85, that was a very informative post!
If you download Spare Parts from the Market it gives you access to the same info - instead of 'dialing' to test mode.

My biggest is "Calendar" (54mins from Boot, compared to 1min for Andriod System!)
What Calendar could this be? Im syncing from Google Calendar, so will it be that? If so, wouldnt my email syncing show up as constantly on too?
Or could it be some other App that is making it run constantly?
Any help gratefully received.

Have a look for "Total in all time" with mine the calendar is roughly half that of android system, it could be that recently your calendar has had to sync for a long time, this could be a one off or if it's still high for the total time it could be a deeper problem. You could also try rebooting and seeing if it occurs again.

I'm still having problems with battery drain.
My Desire will not last a day
Installed Juiceplotter to find out when and why my battery drops so fast.
See attached image.
The battery drains very fast when i USE the phone, so when the screen is on. (20% in one hour)
I have two push email account activated, one with the HTC Exchange, and one with TouchDown.
But that doesn't explain the drops when phone is active.
Anyone else having this kind of batterydrain ?
I have positive "story" about battery too. Im on second charging. Saturday at 1:00 Im unplug it from charger and now 34h later Im on 7/10 battery.
Im make few calls(cca. 10 calls long 1-3min), few times(cca. 3-5x) check emails accounts(4 pop3 email accountes), quick test sygic navigation, little search on market(install calendar widget and some other app), and play few levels of Teeter...
3G is turned ON
GPS, WIFI is turned OFF
Also automatic sync is for most things disabled or setup to sync 1x per day...
Hmm Can't say I'm impressed by my battery life... it dropped 20% overnight..
I''ll keep an eye out on what's running and see if i can fine tune, but turning things off seems to be a bit pointless as it is made for use not just sit on a desk being pretty.

Kef

yep, that sounds highly plausible. Bad or weak connections to the network (especially mobile internet connections) will really drain a battery as the phone needs to use more power to maintain adequate connection strength.
you can check your signal strength in the "settings / network strength" section. I notice in good 3G areas my connection is -95dBm or higher. At work (which is in some sort of black spot in Dublin) I only get EDGE connection and my signal strength is about -80 to -85dBm. I bet this makes a big difference to battery life, especially if I try browsing or data connection.
my signal strength at work is -91 dbm...
i'm guessing bigger numbers are worse?

spare parts showed me that "media" was using the network a lot, bowever i cant work out what this corresponds to, it says DRM protected content storage, download manager and media storage. shows as having downloaded several megs
i use spotify for music, anyone any ides what these could be?
thanks
only guess but i'd say its spotify.. i have used servcies like that in the past on my pc.. and they sometimes have a lot of downloading going on that you dont even ask for!... worth checking out..

yes it could be, but spotify also comes up as a separate user of resources and i tested it since unplugging when spotify wasnt running and "media" still comes up as the biggest user.
makes me think that its not spotify
I've heard some people say they get 3 days out of their desires and others saying they get just over a day.
This thread it would be great to collect a list of people with desires and their average battery life as well as a list of apps they have installed and widgets on display and maybe the rom they are using.
Just trying to work out
I'm going to collect data and put something up tomorrow - but I noticed last night that my battery went down really quickly when my Alarm went off (using Gentle Alarm) I also confirmed this using JuicePlotter which showed the battery sharply decrease just at the same time in which my alarm was set to go off.
I also noticed that having wifi turned on didnt seem to effect battery life that much...
Yeah my battery lasts really well leaving WI-FI on too. Not sure why others have an issue with it.
My battery will last a day tops turning on from 7.30 and off again around 12am ish
During day I will use Seemic (on manual update) and use FB on net every now and then.
May occasionally go to the Market for Updates.
I only use mobile Network when I need to so I turn off and on when required.
I will play Word Up and Solitaire for 30 -40 mins a day roughly.
Battery % will vary between 65 - 45 by 6.30 pm
Today it is down to 75% at 2.10pm - although I've not played any games today so far.
I bought an X10 and returned it because the battery wouldn't last even a day despite having all kinds of task-killing crap installed.
Then I bought a Desire and had the same problem - 6, maybe 7 hours of battery.
I found a post on some obscure blog that helped me track down the culprit: there are apps that don't let the device go to sleep completely. I had two of them. And Android (at least the HTCs) have a built-in function to see exactly what those processes are:
From the dialer: *#*#INFO#*#*, choose Battery History from the menu and then Partial Wake Usage. Nothing should have more than a tiny fraction of a bar. But on mine, Grooveshark was using 99%. I uninstalled it, tried again a few hours later and saw that Mikandi was using 99%. I uninstalled that, and now I'm getting more than 24 hours of heavy use.
Some apps just don't behave.
Why would Dialer App have such a high network usage?
It shows up as using a lot of network!

Wouldn't the dialer use the network to call people when you dial?
Thanks for the "cheat code" on the hidden menu. Very interesting.
I can sometimes squeeze 2 days out of my battery. I'll only get a day and a half on this charge though because of lots of txting and facebook use.
I found this menu option in Settings > "accounts & sync" > Background Data. I turned this off and seem to get a little more battery.
Changing the brightness down a bit helps, and i'll set the screen timeout to lower as its at 1 minute now. Plus If I use friend stream instead of the facebook widget then it updates when I want to and doesnt keep active.
Least amount of battery time i've had is a day. I never turn my phone off.
I never get a full day out of mine, maybe 8-10 hours max... I have no idea how some people claim 3 days, I'm not exactly a power user!
Stock ROM (not a provider one, just generic) on T-Mobile UK network
Wi-Fi and GPS off
Widgets: Standard Flip Clock, SMS, FriendStream, Stocks (2hr update), Agenda, News (2hr Update)
Market Programmes: K9 Mail (1Hr e-mail updating), ES File Explorer, Shazam, Voice Search, Pkt Ebay, Tricorder, UK TV Guide, GBCoid
In Standby (screen off), not using web, not calling, not texting, not using apps, I lose around 10% per hour, faster if anything at all is on.
Oddly, despite the very poor (for me anyway) standby life, in call life seems really good, I made a call last night for an hour, where phone was in the orange phase when I started and still hadn't gone red at the end...
Pauly
I wanted to try turning background data off but sadly the market does not work when you have this turned off (a warning pops up when you try)

anyone got background data or mobile data turned off?
if so whats your battery life like?
also anyone tried with 3G on and compared to GSM ONLY?

Well the only app that have a bigger bar is Android System... Is this normal?
Settings ; About phone ; Battery ; Battery use and it will tell you when it was last unplugged and what has been using it.
4h 27m
Cell standby - 45%
Phone idle - 45%
Wifi -7%
Android system - 5%
Display - 2%
Obviously you can see from that I've hardly used it. A few texts, checking email periodically. Display brightness is on full, weather update is set to manual. Only have a few apps installed. Main one being data counter widget.
2000kb wifi
780kb cell.
Oh, and SystemPanel, tells me I have 93%.
Switch off 3g when you don't need it,this can nearly double your standby/idle time ,use a 2g-3g toggle if its a pain.
Juice defender with its plotter can give you very useful info on when your phone is using its battery the most.
On idle with 2g 1% per hour is normal, with 3g 2-4 %.
As soon as that screen goes on start thinking 15-20% per hour!
Most smart phones are the same,my x1 ,touch pro all got caned when I first got them, but a bit of experience and a few tweaks later they were doing 3-4 days.
Also flatten it and fully charge it when switched off helps too.
My battery life is pitiful too, im a pretty light user now ive had time to play with the phone for a while but battery will always need to be put on charge by around 10pm when only unplugged around 7am the same day.
I bought up the partial wake usage list and UID followed by a number is using twice the power of Android System.
Does anyone know what the UID is?
My battery life was rubbish until i updated the radio version to 32.37.00.32U_4.06.00.16_2. I am also using MCR3.1
Before my battery life would be fully discharged within 7 hours. Now i have 1day+ Not too sure as i now have a brodit car mount that charges my phone during my commute.

Stating the obvious, but if you don't use your phone, your battery will last a long time!
Personally I need to use my phone (otherwise why would I have bought it) so have push email running with full Exchange sync 8 till 8, FB & Twitter syncing once an hour, spend a couple of hours a day making calls, connect to WiFi using my iPass account whenever a hotspot is available and spend a lot of time dealing with emails etc.
I put my "less than a day" battery life down to the fact that my screen is on and doing stuff for much of that time.
Of course if I just leave the phone on the desk at the side of me and don't touch it all day, even with push mail and all that sync, if the screen is not turned on much, I get 2 days.
It's the screen that eats the battery. The more it is on, the shorter the time between charges.
Wow I don't understand how you people get such amazing battery life!
I am no noob anymore regarding Android and Smartphone's in general, so I understand most 'hints & tricks' in this thread. But simply for me this does not work.
Some important stuff:
- I ALWAYS have 2G on, never 3G.
- I use wifi at home and in most places I go
- I have almost everything set to 'manual' updating
Ok.
For example my last situation:
I unplugged it at 23.30 yesterday. I used it for a little bit, over wifi. Checking twitter, surfing the web, watching some video's in HTC Flash Player. I went to bed around 02.00, watched some Law & Order that's why it was so late. So before turning off the lights, I turned wifi off. The battery was around 80-85%, from what I remember.
I wake up at 12.00. The battery was still above 50%, that's for sure. I do some facebook, twitter, news, etc. All over wifi.
And now, just before 17.00, my battery was dead (while I almost typed this entire story on my Desire -.- I was pissed). So that means, about 17 hours? Which about 10 hours I slept and the phone was doing nothing, over 2G!
So yeah... and when I read all your story's about 2 days (48 hours) I am really like: WTF
Some more details:
-No live-wallpaper. Just the black 'carbon' one.
-I used to use LauncherPro beta, but battery life was just as bad. Now I am back on HTC Sense. I have some widgets, like the Calander widget, a small music widget, bookmarks widget, etc.
-I tried to find out what uses the most battery while sleeping with that code and it showed Android System. So nothing weird there.
-Again, everything set to MANUAL updating
-ONLY 2G.
-Brightness set to auto.
So really, I think it's my wifi that sucks the battery life out of my Desire. I remember when I went on a trip and was just 'listning' to music, my battery only dropped like 10 to 15% in 3 hours.
-----------
Btw, I remember that this 'some people have great battery life some people don't' story was the same with the HTC HD2. The only different thing there was that I was one of the people with the 'good' battery life. Now I am on the 'losers' team
Any help would be great!
Hi,
I am having severe problems with battery life where Uptime is equal to Awake or at least very very close to it. I kill Calendar (calendar.bg process) each time after starting the phone, and still I suffer from problems. Today my battery died from 100 to 25 in 7 hours, and I removed both Flickr and killed Google Calendar Sync process again. I've noticed that too many times Google Calendar sync icon in the Google Content Provider window is turning around while there aren't any changes of Google Calendars I've made.
Is it possible and a good solution overall to turn off syncing Calendar via Google content provider and instead configure a Exchange with Google Sync?
I am not sure about calender killing but I just use juicydefender and thgat has massively improved my battery life to over double the time..... might be worth trying that....
I use JuiceDefender as well (UltimateJuice edition) but despite that my phone has died today, so far it is around 9% and I have absolutely no idea why it's dying so fast.
I think I must have some application that prohibits my phone from going into sleep mode. I turned off Flickr completely (I use PicPush to push photos online), I just removed Fring and eBuddy from my phone (I think the culpit may be eBuddy but not really sure). I use Executive Assistant although without Twitter/Facebook pulls.
My Twitter pull is 2 hours. My Facebook pull is 4 hours. I use both internal Sense Peeps and external Twitter for Android content providers because I like to have Peep tweets into my Contact List, althought I am looking for feedback if this is eating too much battery.
Anyway the major sync problem is the Calendar. IT'S TAKING AGES AND ALMOST EVERY TIME I GO TO SYNC WHEN PHONE IS SYNCING, IT'S CALENDAR THAT ROLLS ITS PROGRESS ICON TO NO END. I have no idea why HTC is doing this travesty with its phones, and absolutely no idea how to make Calendar behave on my phone.
Anyway, I ordered MUGEN 3200 MAh battery as a long-term solution. 7mm on the phone's width won't be the best thing to have but it is something I'll get used to if I want to have a phone that lives through a day even if used.
WHAT THE HELL!?
I have turned off Google Calendar sync, and configured Google Sync as Exchange for Calendar events only. Despite the fact, I've noticed the turning circle of sync progress in front of Google Calendar sync (in Google Account) even if it is unchecked. I am totally lost now, what can I do to resolve this?
My next Android may not be HTC.
Hmm - I had exactly the same problem, 'Calendar' using up most of the partial wake. However I'm not convinced it is really the Google Calendar itself causing the problem. I've still got the Agenda widget installed but switched off syncing for the 'Stock' app (as I never use it anyway) and also deleted my Flickr account from the phone - even after a few reboots that still seems to have done the trick and the Calendar partial wake is now miniscule and battery life has shot up.
Do you want to try removing your Flickr account completely and see if that helps?
I've already raised a ticket with HTC about this (and a few other issues). They weren't that helpful when I first emailed them, they've been much better since I phoned them and asked for it to be escalated to a level 2 agent. I'm now getting pretty much daily updates from their agent. They asked me to remove the Agenda widget to see if it helped but now I don't have the problem it's difficult to try these things out - I'm sure they'd be happy to work with you. After you've logged the issue then feel free to PM your email +/- ticket number and I can update my ticket to ask them to run through the troubleshooting with you too.
I have the same issue with my Desire, I don't know how the battery life can be this bad to be honest , but from what I have heard from the latest update the battery life has been really bad for a lot of people, but some others have been lucky.
I have emailed HTC, so lets see what they have to say. Looks like we may have to wait for the next software update so they can resolve this issue.
Other than that I love my Desire and am extremely happy with it

Meanwhile I did this:
I did a factory reset of the phone today, and reinstalled some of the apps I really use and none of those I just kept for rare occasions. I cut down apps that have processes as well.
I turned off Internet Time as I saw online it improved battery time. I don't sync Stocks. I do sync Weather however.
I did not add Flickr account.
I use Pure Calendar that uses the standard Calendar content provider. So I cannot turn off the content provider yet. I know Agenda but its not as good as Pure Calendar. But I did add Calendar content via Exchange. I noticed Exchange sync to be much much faster than the old dragging for a minute or two Google content provider calendar sync.
My battery dies to 95 over couple minutes. I guess calibration is screwed through factory reset as well, I should have never updated with the OTA but got tempted by the Memory Management optimization.
Same here, I dony sync google calander and no flickr. My facebook and twitter are set up for 2 hours and Im using juice defender ultimate. I noticed every time I unlock my fone after the screen gone off it starts to sync even though I have set up everything including mail for 2 hours. Calendar process is used by facebook sync and twitter sync so only way to disable it is to stop your syncs but I dont wanna loose my facebook picture sync so cant do that. Hope HTC improve this in the froyo update.
I used autostarts to disable some apps from starting and its been on for 50 mins so far after full charge and im down to 97% which aint too bad but I think juice defenders night mode helps that. Before autostarts I lost 1% every 5 mins. So try that guys.
It's me again, back to report my unsuccessful phone experience today
Well, apparently factory reset and trimming down the number of apps I use did nothing to prolong my phone's life. 10:00 to 18:00, it was down to 28% and losing 1% every 10 minutes, worse when screen is on. Basically, what I figured out is that it's not some rogue app installed on my device that has been triggering this bad lifespan. I also purchased SeePU++ and was really dishearted to see 60-70% CPU when the Calendar Sync process works, and it works almost constantly no matter I've set 2-4 hours frequency to Facebook and Twitter, and I'm using Exchange for Calendars where it has two frequencies set to 2 and 4 hours peak/offpeak times.
Listening to Music isn't good as well. Using DoubleTwist android app, phone remains warm while listening. Not good. Is the phone completely awake while listening to music even if the screen is off?
I've made the following changes for tomorrow, and I'll report again:
* I turned off Wireless Network Location. Not sure whether I'd live well without it, apparently my Latitude will suffer greatly and Tasker won't be able to use its Location triggers (GPS Fix triggers kill the battery in less than 2 hours), so will other apps that use rough estimation, especially if indoors.
* I revised my UnlimitedJuice. My current profile is:
** Timeout: N/A
** Schedule: Keep APN/WIFI disabled (I removed timed schedules as I suspect it kept my device from prolonged sleep)
** Night: Keep APN/WiFi disabled 0-7am (Use it just for the silent mode, otherwise it's probably charging)
** Traffic: N/A (I used to use Traffic to keep connections alive, but decided not to due to prolonged Calendar sync)
** Peak: N/A (obviously!)
** Charger: Leave APN/WiFi enabled while charging (obviously!)
** Screen: Leave APN/WiFi enabled while screen unlocked (obviously, again!)
If anyone is familiar with UltimateJuice, please let me know whether this sounds okay?
I think a culpit was the Schedule setting, as it must have kept my device constantly out of sleep to check my email. Not that I don't want that but until I stick a Mugen 3200 MAh battery in this device, I am wary against it not sleeping well. I also turned off Traffic as Calendar Sync has the stupid tendency to restart itself despite it is not expected to based on user-set frequency. No idea how to control this, no bugfix even estimated.
I think HTC doesn't really care about the life of their phones once they sold them to us. I am also very unpleased to find out how useless those fast 1 Ghz processors are when paired with old battery tech. I am looking at HTC Wildfire and it's 30-50% better battery life with somewhat of an envy. The only company that seems to bother to do something with batteries today is Apple. I won't draw conclusions especially under affect.
I have a question to all ROM-familiar users who have gone 2.2, does JIT improve battery life (through making code run faster, maybe using less CPU resources)?

2.2 ROMs on my Desire make my battery last even less. I lost 1% every 5 mins on any 2.2 ROM.
I get the syncing going on every time I switch screen on. no matter what I have set in the settings. I got 20% overnight between midnite and 9am while Juice Defender was on night mode.
This is very discouraging, Nekromantik. Seems like I shouldn't be as excited about the upcoming August 2.2 update, now. I don't trust HTC to resolve this problem given how every single new device is plagued (Desire/Incredible/EVO) and they do nothing about it.

yeah this has made me loose faith in HTC.
Battery life should be a big factor in smartphones. I should at least expect it to last 24 hours without a charge. Which is good enough for smartphones.
Just gotta add that even though my battery life is not that good, it does show that the phone does sleep as atm in the about menu it shows that the phone been on for 3 hours and been awake for 1 hour 30 mins. Which means it is sleeping but why am I still getting bad battery life all of a sudden after reflashing from Froyo ROM? I did a full wipe including a sd card wipe before I flashed Pays ROM back on. Makes no sense to me.
I'm having a very similar problem with battery life. Android System prevents my phone from going to complete sleep but strange enough - only during night when my phone is in airplane mode.
So I decided to switch off Automatic Network Time. This helped for one night and yesterday the problem reappeared again :-(
So last night I turned off location as well services and again it seems OK for now.
During the day my battery life is OK. I guess I could keep the phone turned on during night as well (as a bypass) but this is not how a smartphone of 21st century should work.
This is a mid-day report but I think I might have finally figured it out. And it's the most ironic solution ever!
I pulled the phone off the charger in 10:00, by 11:00 I was already at 88-86% and rapidly decreasing with only minor phone call activity. Then I turned off JuiceDefender/UltimateJuice and kept using the phone for contact list adding, single profile photo shot with camera, many long calls. Now it is 14:35 and my battery is at 69% - incredibly resistant compared to what I've had by that hour with less phone activity. Also, my phone seems to sleep much longer and more often than before when I used UltimateJuice.
It appears to me now that the reason the phone has been dying on me is JuiceDefender/UltimateJuice. Apparently the latest versions destroy the battery rather than save it!! I told you it's an ironic...
I will be reporting by 19:00 with the phone's actual lifespan over the course of the day but looks like I'll have a winner today.

interesting.
I swear juice defender helped me during the night but I could always switch apn off during sleep. I lost 12% overnight but once I was awake I lost 6% in 45 mins while it was on standby.
It is 21:10 as I type and my battery shows 24% after moderate use day. My phone sleeps more (2 hours use for 11 hours day cycle) and it loses around 1-2% per hour when asleep.
The culpit is definitely UltimateJuice and I am at complete loss how an app meant to save battery can destroy battery.
Also, I noticed that waking my phone when UltimateJuice is not running does not trigger an annoying Calendar Sync (Sync All icon remains non-animated).
I decided to switch off mobile internet and only switch it back on when I wanted to surf/lurk on here/check mail etc. Uninstalled juicedefender but kept plotter. The amount of difference doing those things has been exponential. Before, my battery was dead in about 8 hours use. now it will last 17+. Even use it for music which I wouldn't risk when internet was always on.
For me it is the Location services and Network time that need to be switched off.
As I said I only get battery problems during night in airplane mode so I tested several settings and it seems that both Network time and Location services need to be switched off so they stop trying to update themselves.
Although I would imagine that once you switch your GSM module off that should be enough to also stop Network time and Location... Apparently my assumptions are dead wrong
I think its time to start a worldwide petition to HTC if they please could fix the problems with the battery. I cannot use my phone to call when I am not near a power source. After 15 hours the battery is down to 20% ..its so frustrating.
HTC know there are problems (perhaps the read some forums) and dont do anything about it. Thats not customer friendly.
I think Apple is more serious on that point and investigates every single way to save battery life.
Whats the use of a phone (mine is pretty basic with no specials programs on it) that could not last 1 day?
I think buyers must give a signal to HTC to take these sort of problems serious.
