[Q] SD card not recognized/unsupported filesystem - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok guys, I've tried to figure this out using other threads on the forum, but I've still come up with nothing!
I'm running cyanogen mod with clockwork recovery AFAIK. Bought the G2 on eBay already rooted, and everything has been working great until yesterday. All of a sudden the phone gives me the infamous "SD card blank or has unsupported filesystem." Argh! I've tried reformatting the card through the OS, and then it tells me to insert a new SD card. Ok, I reboot... annnnnd the same thing again. Next I tried mounting it through the OS. After it's done it tells me the card can't be mounted because it's probably corrupted. Let me just say I don't think that's the case because I was using it RIGHT before this started happening. When I try to connect through Windows and format it doesn't recognize any storage in the device.
So now I'm here. What the heck do I do, xda?! Is there something in the recovery menu I should use? Any suggestion is greatly appreciated, and if you need any more info please ask!

Bump for justice!

I have had the same stuff happen to me many times. Download SD formatter on your pc it finds the sdcard and formats it. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=sdformatter

Alright, now it's getting really bad. I attempted to format that card in the computer, but it actually did seem to be ****ed up, in that the computer saw the card once and then it was invisible. Ok, so I order a new 8GB microSD card, arrived today. I format the card using the above program, succesfully, throw it in the phone, and bam, SAME ****ING PROBLEM. What the ****? This is ****ing BULL****.
Now I'm considering re-flashing the phone, but that's a last resort option. Is there something that needs to be on the SD card for cyanogen/CWR for it to even work? I didn't think this was the case, but if it is, WHAT do I need to put on it?
Again, this is quite infuriating, so any help or direction is greatly appreciated.

This is what I would do. I would format the card on the computer to fat32 format. On the phone I would boot into recovery and select wipe data/factory reset, then still in recovery I would go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache, and then still in recovery I would go to mounts and storage and format system and format boot. Back on the computer I would re-download the ROM (what you have now may be corrupt) and place the zip on the newly formatted card. Then I would put the sd card in the phone and flash the ROM.

[Q] SD card not being read

SD card won't be read when phone is on. When device is in recovery, I can USB toggle and see everything on my SD card. It's only when I try connecting through USB when on (CM6.1 or Myn TwoPointTwo) is when nothing happens (Myn) or the phone freezes and reboots (CM6.1).
I had my phone plugged in through USB while on CM6.1 RC2 and dropping in the new CM6.1 file into my phone when I forgot to eject and went straight into recovery. Now I can't install anything or mount my SD card. I can use ASTRO or a file manager app to view everything though.
As for nandroid, I deleted all my pre-USB **** up backups and only have the USB **** up RC2 backup. So that won't help. I'm guessing the device is still thinking it's plugged in because of my mistake. Any way to fix this?
I have noticed this as well lately under both Sense and AOSP roms. I can't mount my SDCARD from USB while the rom is running - only in recovery.
Odd. Wonder what is causing this?
I was talking to Shift and we came to the conclusion that my SD card is probably corrupt after shutting down while still mounted to my computer. I just extracted the folders that are important to me (pictures, Titanium Backup, etc) and will transfer them over to a new SD card once I buy one.
If anyone knows any way this might be fixed, I would appreciate it
Did you already try reformatting the card?

i had the same issue with my 16gb card.
I couldnt get it to read in the computer either unless I put it in the full sized SD adapter and put the "lock" switch on.
Needless to say, i couldnt do anything with it and ended up sending it back for a replacement.

I was hoping to exhaust all options before coming across this, but as I have nothing else to try I'm going to just format it. Hopefully I can format through recovery or something because it doesn't even let me unmount my SD card from Settings options.

Yeah, I figure I'll try my last option of formatting and see if it works. Here's to hoping! Lol.
FIXED
Issue has been corrected by formatting SD card. Thanks for the replies :]

[Q] Not the typical sdcard problem... Any ideas?

I started having an issue today when I downloaded snes roms for my emulator. They would download and work great until I rebooted or file shared with cpu. Then they would suddenly disappear. Then I started noticing some of my apps that were stored on my sd card lost there picture and weren't installed anymore. That pushed me over the edge to unroot, format sdcard and start over but then I found out I had more problems. I can see and access the existing files on my sd card but I can't move anything else to it. Everytime I moved over unrevoked s-on and tried to flash it, it wasn't there. Two times it actually showed in recovery but then installation was aborted due to bad file (I downloaded it from multiple sources, including unrevoked).
Should I format the sdcard?
I'm lost, any help?
If possible, backup the sdcard, and then yes, try formatting it.
Thanks for the quick reply.
I've backed up my sdcard's content on my computer but I'm concerned that after formating I won't be able to move the files back. Could that be an issue?
Naw, you'll be able to move them back. You just have to copy them back over.
I tried formatting the sdcard and it didn't do anything. It gave me the warnings about erasing all the files and everything...
Using clockworkmod I tried to partition the sdcard and it had a similar result. It warned me that everything will be erased but when it booted back up everything remained and it's like nothing happened.
Is it possible that the sdcard has been locked?
Did you forward with the partition? Cuz it does warn you. And when partitioned, it should have nothing on it...so try running it again, or do it on a pc if available.
I don't have an adapter for my computer so it looks like I'll need to pick one up tomorrow. Thanks for the advice!
Oh and yes I went forward with the partition along with formatting the card. Both had zero effect. Nothing had been erased.
Hmm that's weird, but alright. And you can shoot me a message if you need anymore help.
I got to work today and swapped a co-workers sdcard into my phone and took a picture. It showed up on her evo proving that my phone still is properly writing files. The sdcard must have just crapped out. I'll be formatting it using my computer today so hopefully that will help.
Well I got a new SD card and everything works perfectly. Now my 8gb will just be my backup after I format it.

[Q] CyanogenMod 7 is ruining my SD cards

Now I'm not moaning about CyanogenMod here, I'm just trying to understand how I can fix the issue.
Basically, I had CyanogenMod 7 RC2 on my Desire Z. That was it.
Eventually I saw through ROM Manager that the full release of 7 was out so I downloaded, took a backup, wiped everything and did a fresh install of the new ROM.
It installed fine, but none of my apps that needed root access were getting it.
So I booted into recovery, restored my backup, root was back.
I then installed 7.0 over my RC2. That worked fine, but again root was gone.
At this point, my phone started damaging SD cards.
It suddenly started saying that my 8GB card that came with the phone was damaged. I tried to fix it on the phone, but it just said 'Checking card' and then giving up.
Putting it in an old MP3 player, it is not detected at all.
Putting it in a card reader, the card is unreadable and when I try to format it Windows says the card is 'read only' (this is not due to the reader).
I put a functional 2gb card I had lying around into my Desire Z and it broke it in the exact same way.
My question to you guys is - what could be causing this and how do I fix it because I have a 16gb card coming and I'm obviously cautious of putting it in the phone.
Also, how would I go about flashing the new Cyanogenmod 7.02 ROM if my phone keeps breaking SD cards I put into it?
This error can be because when ever you install a CyanogenMod ROM over another, It leaves files your new ROM think is useful such as data that the new ROM doesn't support. It is damaging your SD Card because it keeps attempting to fix the error but is making it worst by trying to remove system files. Your best bet is to try another ROM and see if it does the same thing and report it to CyanogenMod Developer Team if it only does this to CyanogenMod ROMs otherwise it would be just a virus on your SD Card feeding off of personal data. If it is only CyanogenMod ROMs, we will adress this issue ASAP. Hope I helped
Thank you VS4, you are indeed helpful
I've since heard some people have managed to fix their SD cards by formatting them in ClockworkMod but I can't even mount it first in order to do this! Is my card truly dead?
Also, do you think the reason that CM7.0 had no root (even when it was a clean install) was due to me not 'fixing permissions'?
Thanks
Just a note to say that I've managed to fix it!
Despite being unable to 'mount sdcard' in clockworkmod, I found I was able to activate USB Storage and through this I was able to format the card (Windows 7 was previously saying that the same card was 'read only' in a multitude of card readers).
I hope this helps any poor chap with the same problem.
I had this exact same problem, munched 2 of my 8GB cards, and had a 16 on the way. I somehow fixed it before the 16 came and I've never had the issue since, glad to see an explanation of it.
Thanks, nofixio!
I had the same problem on my Samsung Fascinate with CM7. It ate my 16GB SD card to the point where the phone wouldn't recognize it, CWM wouldn't mount it, and it wouldn't show up on my computer in multiple SD readers.
I wasn't quite clear what you were suggesting when you said you were able to "activate USB Storage." I thought maybe you meant within CWM. That didn't work for me, but I was able to boot the phone up with the problem SD card in it and turn on USB storage as normal. Suddenly my computer could not only see the SD card, it could see all the files that were on it before it died! I backed everything up, formatted the card in Windows, and everything's good now. Thanks for the tip!

I'm not sure why you would ask this in such an old thread but... Try just plugging it in to your computer maybe? What ROM are you on?

im running cm7 ... it wont read from computer. i tried several micro sd card readers. it just tells me it cant format. its just like what was mentioned before.
Weird, I've never had any problems with Cyanogen 7 roms. I've flashed one over another and had no issues at all, Mayb because I use SuperWipe before hand? Or maybe its a certain sd card issue???
Running Desire Z and Andromadus Beta 11 I had similar problem after I had applied remote wipe from Exchange (wanted to see if it works). Remote wipe worked: it destroyed contents of SD card and erased phone back to factory settings. After wipe mounting SD card failed and Andromadus seemed to be unable to format the card.
Solution: Booted phone to Clockwork recovery and applied advanced -> Partition SD Card.
Posted this on this thread since it came first when searching solution.

Go into Recovery (Clockwork), go to mounts and storage, then scroll down and it should say mount USB storage.

MicroSD card help

Hi everyone,
I have a 64gb sandisk microsd external card, in a att galaxy s3 and it appears to be acting very strange.
i can't add or delete anything from it, i put it in my brothers galaxy s2 to format it (my s3 not having the option(which is strange)) and it let me format it, but when it remounts its at the exact same place, with 42.2gb free storage space, which is what it was at before i formatted it, i did it a few times same thing.
if i manually try to delete things from the card through my phone or computer they either hang or they do delete then upon reboot all the files are back. I hope its not corrupted but it sounds like it is. i've used a few apps like sd tools which runs speed tests, and i get about 130mb write speed a second and 5000mb read speed a second which sounds like it should be able to read and write things but unfortunately it just won't
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm. You might have to try a double format in TWRP, then when you load up the System use the system's format tool. (i.e. Storage --> Wipe SD Card). If that doesn't work, you might need to find someone with a microsd to USB jig or something of the sort and use a computer to format it.

yeah thanks for the support, tried a number of things in twrp but to no avail. i went out and bought another 64gb microsd card and put it in my phone, works perfectly. but still i'm trying to get the other card working. the new card came with an adapter so i've been trying to format it in my computer. i've used windows format, i do the long one, it gets all the way to the end looks like its complete then says unable to format. and all teh data is still there, i've also tried guiformat by ridgecrop, says success but still all the information is still there.
i don't know if this means the card is corrupt i'd always assumed i'd get corruption error messages.
is there a program i can use to scan the card for errors or corruption?
thanks again dude for the responses any additional help will be very much appreciated still.
again thanks.
solution sorta found
Okay, finally ran out of options and things to search for so broke down and called sandisk techncial suport (didn't think they could help but my mistake)

[HELP][URGENT] SD Card Problem with my Device

Hello all, someone please please consider helping me out. I'm using MIUI6 Latest. Everything was fine. Last night my phone got full discharged somehow, in the morning, I recharged it and found that the sdcard is not being recognized. I tried all the ways. Its not recognized in Windows too. I tried in the recovery and its not showing up. What should I do? please someone help me. I might repair it through recovery but it will format it and I don't want to lose the data. Is there any way to recover it? The current file system of the card is 'vfat' as shown by the recovery. Please help me.
You need to format it to either EXT4 or FAT32.You can later on recover the data via file recovering apps.

@aniket.lamba, Thanks brother. But what I found was whenever I'm trying to format the card through TWRP but its getting failed everytime.. Even more, its not recognized through card readers in Windows.. And even more, I tried formatting it throgh a Nokia Symbian phone but whenever I put the card in the phone it doesn't boots up. And if I put the card in my laptop or desktop, even they don't boot up. Whats wrong with it, and what happened to it overnight?? I feel its hard bricked. but how. Please help me out brother, I have million dollar data on the card. Atleast I could save the card.

There's no other way out I guess..
Radical solution, maybe...
Hi,
I was stucked, once, with my external sd card also, like you.
You can try to format your card with the MiniTool Partition Wizard for windows. If the software doesn't recognize the card (giving it as damaged), then go to the Computer icon - on windows - right click on the card, and make a full format. Then enter the MiniTool and format in the FAT/ext format that you want.
I do not garante, though, that you will be able to recover your data - I didn't... The windows format erases - I think - all the card info...
But it will put your card straight, I guess...
Kind regards,
CPtolemy
