CMW 3 is only for Gingerbread ROMs. If you want to try Virtuous, make a Nandroid backup of CM7, flash CWM 2 and then flash Virtuous. If you decide to go back to your CM7 backup, you'll need to flash CWM 3 back again before restoring the backup.
The problem lies in Froyo and Gingerbread using a different file system.

I'm assuming you have ROM Manager installed (if not, grab it from the Market) and you can install it from there easily at the bottom ("All ClockworkMOD Recoveries")

not disagreeing with Gabriel, but I was able to switch from CM7 nightly 30 running CWM 3.x to Virtuous 0.9.5 without downgrading CWM back to 2.x
obviously, you need to perform a full wipe beforehand.. but it went just swimmingly for me.
give it a shot and see if it works. create a backup beforehand and if it doesn't seem to work, restore your backup, go into CM7 like you normally would, and go to ROM Manager app.. from here, you can restore CWM 2.x by pressing "flash CWM recovery" (I think that's the option - it's the first option in ROM Manager) - it should display 2.5.x.x or whatever version you had installed prior to changing the recovery image to 3.x...reboot into recovery and you should have your green text back and you'll be good to go!

I'm not saying you can't but, you will run the high risk of breaking things. Froyo and Gingerbread use different filesystems, hence the two different versions of CWM

Im not sure if I'm not doing something right but, after I downloaded CM7 #6 in Rom Manager, I select google apps as well as backup and wipe data but when it reboots, it hasnt changed and i get a notification that the new update is available. What should I do?
Forget about rom manager, download it directly, install it to your sd card and flash from recovery. I just flashed it and works fine.
Just thought I would ask, you do have CWM recovery 3.0.0.X installed right?
Keep in mind now that your running cwm 3.0+, rom manager is useless....doesn't work and don't recommend using it until its workable.

yeah i do. i have CM7 #5 right now and per your suggestion I am about to flash the #6 rom now after downloading it.

Don't think you need to wipe data when flashing nightlies... Wouldn't that defeat the purpose?
i just booted into CWM and flashed the rom. thanks for the help
I have looked across this forum and two other forums and have not found an answer which will satisfy me.
I have successfully rooted and flashed different ROMs many times, so the whole process is not anything I don't understand.
I can successfully flash any of the Cyanogens, Incredibly Re-engineered, Redemption, and SkyRaider ROMs.
I CAN NOT flash but ONE ROM with 'Z' in the title and that is Incredibly Re-engineered Z. Every other ROM such as Super Z, Warm Z 2.2, IncDoes, Uber Z
My DInc will just sit at the HTC Incredible white screen when I reboot after a successful load via clockworkmod.
I have left it sitting for 30 minutes plus while sitting at work. Nothing. Only choice I have is to restore from backup to a working ROM.
Any suggestions?
The ROM's you quoted are mostly using ClockWorkMod Recovery version 3 for the install. If you are on CWM version 2 the result you are getting is kind of expected. The v3 scripts are not compatible with v2 but v2 does not know any better so tries to install it.
Go into ROM Manager and see what recovery you are on and use RM to install CWM v 3.0.0.7
I would then try installing the ROM with RM selecting the wipe option
SIDE NOTE: If you are on CWM v3 and you try to install a v2 based ROM CWM will tell you that it is outdated
That is what I saw on other sites, but I have the latest version of clockworkmod v3.0.0.8 and have flashed the ROMs successfully with it, but they just wont go past the HTC Incredible white screen. The ones that gave me script errors, I have flashed down to clockworkmod v2.5.1.7 or whichever i seen in the OP of that ROM
I just do not understand it. =( ... I dont wanna be limited
Sounds like it could be related to you not having a Samsung Fascinate. I'd try to get a Samsung Fascinate and then you might have better luck.
Get back to work.

You probably did not catch my recommendation to use 3.0.0.7. 3.0.0.8 has known problems with not clearing everything.
In ROM Manager at the bottom install CWM 3.0.0.7 and try flashing the ROM from the SD Card with ROM Manager and select the wipe option.

I have been wanting to root and try a custom rom but I was scared of brick. Anyway I finally rooted with Unrevoked 3.3 which installed Clockwork recovery also and after that I installed rom manager. When I went to do a backup of current rom it said I need to install Clockwork recovery first but its there already. I know there is guides everywhere but thats the problem not sure which to use to learn what to do before I try flashing new rom. What about kernel I really don't understand where to go from here. I am rooted and Clockwork recovery flashed but don't know where to go from here. I am not a idiot just a little guidance please! I really want learn process of installing new and restoring old roms with my Evo. How do I know what other updates need to done before using a certain rom like kernel and radio? First of all, if you're certain that your recovery is installed, then you need to decide what rom and what type of rom you want to install? For instance, do you want a Sense based rom (the HTC overlay that your EVO came with) or an AOSP rom (Pure Android like on the Nexus)? For a sense based rom, I suggest Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS-5. You can see photos of it as well as download it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793471 and for an AOSP rom, I suggest Salvage-Mod 1.2.1. It can be downloaded from here: http://www.salvage-mod.com/node/4. Make sure you download the Google Applications from the same page. Whichever you decide to flash or any others, put them on your SD card. Now shutdown your device. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. There will be a short pause and then a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. Afterwards, you will see a set of options. One of the options will be "recovery". By the way, look at the top of the screen and make sure it displays "S-OFF". If it displays "S-ON", you are not rooted. Anyway, select recovery. Your phone will vibrate and display a white EVO screen and then boot into recovery. Your recovery should be ClockworkMod. Go into the backup menu and select nandroid backup to make a backup of your current setup. You can always restore your device to the way it was if you don't like your new roms, mods, themes and kernels. After you've made your backup, go to the wipe menu and wipe everything except the SD card. After that, go to the flash zip menu and flash the rom you want to try. After it's finished, it should prompt you to reboot. Do so and be patient. You will appear to hang at a couple of places. Be patient. Let it finish. Be patient. Do not pull the battery. Be patient. After some time, you will see your rom's splash screen and then your new homescreen. If it is a sense based rom, go to menu-settings-system updates and select update profile after you've signed in with your Google credentials. Enjoy your new rom.

Select reboot and then select recovery. Once you're back into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik cache and then flash the Google applications (gapps). Afterwards, reboot.

-steps into the fray-
Well I first off wana say, you were in good hands with dougjamal.
To flash gapps:
1. Download the latest gapps / the ones provided in the salvage mod thread
2. Boot into recovery.
3. After you have flashed the salvage mod rom, wipe your cache and dalvik cache, then flash the gapps zip.
I rooted from stock from 2.3 and want to know if its safe to download and flash a ROM from Rom Manager. I just want to make sure I won't get a conflicting error.
Should I flash a ROM that's based on the official 2.3 img?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I'm not too familiar with the 2.3 process since I've been rooted since 2.2 but I would say that you're fine using ROM manager while on stock. You can either use amon_ra(my personal use) or clockwork (rom manager) many have reported issues with ROM manager so i would recommend amon ra recovery for flashing Roms. Just make sure you have the proper .zip file and wipe wipe wipe. You shouldn't have any problems

From Everything i read it is easier to flash using Rom manager because it does all the work for you. I am using RA recovery, because i read so many posts where people had problem with flashing certain Roms with Clockwork. Don't flash any Rom that has Godmode with Clockwork recovery. I have read you can't do it, but not sure. People told me i should start flashing with Rom manager first. I am flashing Koni's ELITE Series 3 Rom right now as my first Rom using RA.
Not really sure what your asking here. I have 2.3.3 and I flash ROM just fine. I just place the ROM on my sd card and use Ra Recovery cause it will flash everything. I was using ClockWorkMod and came across it not flashing alot of stuff so just save yourself the trouble and get Ra Recovery it also wipe everything compare to the CWM where I had some issues.
Does anyone know if Format All.zip works with official 2.3 on Evo? Trying to flash Koni's Elite Series 3 & it says to flash Format ALL.zip then flash rom. Just want to be sure. Thanks
First of all i must say i m new to rooting androids, did research for a couple of days then went ahead with rooting my Htc desire z which i did an OTA update to gingerbread 2.3.3
I downgraded to froyo 2.2 using this "[GUIDE] Downgrade G2 (2.3.X) & DZ (2.3.X) & mT4g (2.3.4) & DHD w/ S-ON to Stock Froyo" ..i had to create a gold card.
The boot loader shows :
vision pvt ship s-off
Hboot -0.85.0005
Micorp-0425
radio-26.03.02.18_M3
eMMC-boot
oct 11 2010,20:10:38
Next i used the 2nd post of this "[GUIDE][30/06/2011]Root AND Downgrade Desire Z/G2(S-OFF/ClockWorkMod) -No Gingerbread" to flash the Virtuous Unity 2.39.0 Sense 3.0 based on Pyramid
The rom ran fine for a day, then i started getting boot loops, it would boot, show loading then again restart to the htc logo. At first it loaded after 4-5 tries, then it started looping forever.
I restored my nandroid bakup via clockwork recovery...it worked for an hour, then again my own htc sense 2.2 froyo backed up rom also started boot looping.
I tried the "[ROM][10/21/11] Bulletproof MIUI :: 1.10.21 :: OC/UV/Stable!" it works for a while, then again the horror of boot loops renderin my desire z unusable
I tried cleaning the "wipe dalvik cache" "wipe battery stats" via clockwork recovery v3.0.2.4 nothing worked, i did "wipe data /factory reset" , "wipe cache partition" mounts and storage ...."format /cache, /data, /system" then again rooted, and installed the rom via browse from sd card menu.
again the mobile works for an hr or two and the boot loops occurs, and wont stop
im clueless on what to do. can anybody advise me on what to do so that i dont have to throw my phone away
EDIT:
Problem solved. Seems CWM 5 was causing the issue

Important Notes
If you are experiencing random freezes and/or reboots, this is likely due to your device being incapable of handling our overclocking defaults. Download and apply this flashable patch, which will reduce the maximum CPU frequency to 1Ghz and likely eliminate this issue.

I was having boot loops even after installing different roms like MIUI, cynaogen, and even the default stock rom...
I did some research and found out that many people who are having multiple roms boot loop issue have one thing in common.. "clockwork mod recovery".
So i uninstalled the recovery and flashed with the stock htc recovery and then i reflashed with the stock htc rom....and voila no more boot loops and the stock rom which didnt worked previously is now running fine. I still have S-ON, but now im a little afraid to flash with a new rom again
Can anybody confirm that CWM recovery can cause this boot loop ??
I'm not sure about the bootloops with CWM, but if you decide to reroot, as an alternative, I highly suggestion flashing the 4EXT Recovery. It's amazing. I've had zero issues with it. And it has many additional options and fabulous support. The link is in my signature.

One noob question though, what if i again wipe everything and get stock htc recovery for some reason, do i again have to purchase the 4EXT or since i have already purchased it, i just get to download it.

When you wipe, you're using recovery to do the wiping so no, you won't lose the 4ext recovery. You will lose the 4ext Recovery Control app, as you will every other app you downloaded, but your purchase is linked to your Google account so as soon as you sign in with your account the Market will begin downloading everything you purchased.
If you plan on flashing new ROMs, I highly suggest Titanium Backup Pro. Before flashing a ROM, use it to back up all of your apps and their data and create a flashable zip of the program. With 4ext you can flash multiple zips so, set it to flash the new ROM and the Titanium app and that way you can just restore all your apps at once rather than waiting for the Market to download them. The added bonus is that all your data gets restored (saved games, etc.). Just be sure to never restore "system data" unless you're flashing like ROMs.
